Episode 155 :: Meredith Boggs :: Stories of Growing in Faith and the Enneagram Journey

Simply Stories Podcast

Welcome to summer, my friends! This month, we'll be talking about how to engage who we are on the inside so we can better connect with God, get to know who He has always been, and walk with Him from a more authentic place. Once we can do that, it spills over into our relationships around us. Past me would think it was completely crazy to pursue space for growing myself in the summer but present me says that this part of our story matters. We've got self-examination, growth, and care to do. God has much to show us and heal in us. Are you willing to come along for the ride? Today we'll start with Meredith Boggs. Meredith is a podcaster and an author. Her book The Journey Home: A Biblical Guide to Using the Enneagram to Deepen Your Faith and Relationships tells the story of her life as a young adult and doing all the good Christian things, but finding herself burned out and confused. Looking for a way to breathe life back into her soul and her faith and the Enneagram became a tool that God used to minister to her.  Ohhhh the Enneagram: We're going to talk about the beef people have with it, the understandable concerns many have about it, the misuse of it, AND if it is a useful tool to you, then how could we see what God has for people of faith in it so they can grow into who God made them to be. Maybe you've never even heard of it or only heard weird things about it OR you're over it. Give us another chance today because how Meredith breaks down perspectives about how the enneagram can be used well and not well in relationships, and how it can build one another up in the body of Christ is really beautiful and unique. Of all the Enneagram content I've consumed over the years, Meredith's voice has become my favorite. Her book is about spiritual growth more than a personality evaluation. It is grace-filled, but honest and nuanced. I loved this conversation with her so much where you will get to hear some of Meredith's story and hear her share about her journey with recognizing weaknesses and surrendering in recovery and learning how to trust God in those places.   I hope that this conversation ministers to you today. If anything, I hope you hear that we are ALL in progress. We all have weaknesses and limits and the Lord can and will make Himself known in all of them. Transformation takes time, it is messy, and grappling with who God really versus how broken people sometimes claim Him to be can be an adventure, but a worthwhile one.  You matter, and your story matters. Simply Stories Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2022 62:46

Today we are wrapping up our all things fiction series with my conversation with new author Sara Brunsvold. In this conversation Sara shares about her turbulent faith journey of when she was younger and the role older women who were further along in their faith played in helping speak to her heart and help her to know who the Lord truly is.  As she began to find her footing in various seasons, a story began to form in her heart and from her experiences. The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kipp, Sara's debut novel, is an exquisite look into a journey of surrender, facing the brutal and holy realities of life and death on this side of heaven, learning to trust God, and engaging life with a full hold on hope. Sara and I both have lost close family members in the last few years, and we talk about the tension of grieving with hope, how we respond and wrestle as women of faith when we see or experience suffering, and the dignity that is found in walking someone home.  BUT we don't want people to be afraid of this book (or parts of this conversation!) because death is in the title and part of the story. In this story death is not the victor, nor is it the protagonist. It is a story wrapped in hope about what death can and cannot in the lives of those that we love, and how we choose to live this side of Heaven.  This is also a conversation about examining questions such as What does it mean to mentor? What does it mean to be discipled? What and whom do we allow to disciple us? Looking at how we all have influence and how we live and encounter others matters and more. There's a scripture that says “Teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” I think that's what Sara and Mrs. Kip are calling us to in Jesus' name. There is a much much bigger story happening all arond us all the time. Yours adds to it in a way that is entirely unique to you and who you are, but its potential for impact can stretch beyond anything you could imagine. We need you and your story. I hope you feel encouraged to seek the Lord in it.  Connecting with Sara: Book: The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kipp Facebook Instagram Mrs. Kip's Rules to Live By (for newsletter subscribers) Website   References: -Kansas City, MO -A great resource about mentorship is my episode 73 with Kelsey Chapman who wrote the book What They Taught Me: Recognizing Mentors Who Will Take You From Dream to Done -What happened in Laos during the Vietnam conflict -Laotian refugee community in Kansas City -Fort Leveanworth -When America withdrew troops from Saigon and it fell  -The Vietnam humanitarian crisis   Scripture References: 2 John 4,3 John 3-4-Walk in truth -Titus 2 John 3:30,Galatians 2:20-21, Galatians 5:24-25, Philippians 1:21-dying to self  Romans 5:3-5, Romans 6:16-walking in obedience even when it hurts  Proverbs 3:5-6, Philippians 4:6-7 -trusting God even when it makes no sense Proverbs 27:1, Matthew 6:33-34, James 4:13-15-we're not guaranteed the next breath   Romans 8:31-39-Jesus' victory is greater than the suffering and loss we face  1 Peter 1:3-5-We have hope in Jesus Isaiah 61:1-3-beauty from the ashes  John 11:38-44-Jesus weeping as he saw the grief of the people He loved Luke 24:50-53, John 19:28-30, Acts 1:6-11- Jesus went home when His work was finished (on the cross, and His ascension)  Matthew 5:16, Romans 12:13, Galatians 6:2, Hebrews 13:16-speaking life and hope into the lives of others 2 Corinthians 9:6, Galatians 6:8, -sowing seeds of eternity into the lives of those around us -Titus 2 NLT Psalm 139:14-You are uniquely and wonderfully made  1 Timothy 4:12-Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young  Psalm 51:10-create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit Ezekiel 36:26-take our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh Psalm 90:12-teach us to number our days  JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY!!!! #120: Why Mentors Matter with Kelsey Chapman

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2021 44:49

This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with author Kelsey Chapman about her new book What They Taught Me: Recognizing the Mentors Who Will Take You from Dream to Done. Kelsey is also a podcaster and personal cheerleader to women building their dream life and business. When she first launched her brand in 2015, she felt all the overwhelming feelings, too. It was scary to take such a huge leap and commit to showing up for a dream she didn't know would pan out. Mentorship is what pushed her to rise up and continue making her dream a reality. Over the first few years of business, she leaned on the shoulders of several incredible mentors who took her under their wing and taught her how to make the jump from dreamer to doer. Kelsey needed their expert wisdom to shift old perspectives, discover the next right steps that would help her execute the vision, and stay hopeful throughout the journey. Her mentors helped shape her character so she could become the CEO and leader she is today. Now she is excited to pay it forward and be that cheerleader for you, too… because she believes YOU can turn your wildest dreams into REALITY. Key Points from Our Conversation: Mentors are people who are willing to step in and share what they know. They won't be perfect, but they are present and consistent. Seeking a mentor is uncomfortable. You might get rejected or ghosted, but it's not personal. Trust that the Lord will provide the right mentor for you if you keep putting yourself out there. Mentorship relationships can look different. Some might be local, some virtual. Some might be paid mentorships if the person is spending a lot of time mentoring. If you find yourself low on energy, you might be giving away what you know to too many people. Pray and ask God if this is the right season for mentorship and who you should invest in. Mentors can help you avoid burnout by providing the accountability to keep you focused on your main goals. If you're seeking a mentor, start by putting yourself out there by finding groups in person or online with shared interests. If your want to be a mentor, start before you feel ready. You will never feel equipped, but you can put checks and balances in place for when you don't have the big answers. "Your presence is enough." Let's Get Real Practical: Contemplate these questions this week - Are you in a season of needing a mentor, being a mentor, or both? What specific traits are you looking for in a mentor in this season of your life? What can you offer to a mentee? People are CRAVING investment! Don’t we all just want someone to step in, help us walk the next few steps in front of us, and offer their wisdom so we can shortcut the distance? Your mentor is probably not going to be Beth Moore, Priscilla Shirer, or Bobbie Houston…How to find a mentor, that’s probably already in your inner circle, that will be *equally impactful* as one of those people you have on a pedestal in your mind! How to recognize mentors in your everyday life Sometimes our mentors are friends that make us feel at home in our own skin, strong women in our faith circles, or the mother and wife that we look at and think, “I want the life I see you building.” Want to be a mentor? How to get past imposter syndrome…Stop disqualifying yourself! The average mentor is just 3 steps ahead of their mentee. Someone, just a few steps behind you, would be honored for you to step into whatever facet of life they need support in. Standing as a daughter of God in the midst of your fears, I had a lot of fear growing up and even into adulthood - one of my mentors helped me face these with confidence knowing I was safe, loved, and empowered in my identity. Your mentor isn’t going to be perfect… You can learn from anyone. And it will be important to realize that as you get up close and personal with your mentor, they aren’t going to be killing it in every area. While you may be looking for mentorship on how to be an incredible person, you might realize they may not be killing it in the family department - and that’s OKAY! You can learn what you need from them and seek mentorship for another facet of life elsewhere.

She loves teaching other women how to find mentors because mentorship has had such a positive impact on her life and business. Her mentors paved the way and shared their experiences, so she didn't have to learn all the hard lessons herself. Those relationships are what pushed Kelsey to rise up and continue making her dream a reality, even through the difficulties. It was a gift to dig a little deeper into the backstory of Kelsey's desire to write and share her words with the world – something I didn't remember from our previous conversation, which just goes to show you that there is often so much more percolating under the surface of whatever we're working on today. Mentorship vs Discipleship… What is the difference? Listen to today's episode to find out. In this episode we chat with Kelsey Chapman, and author and podcast host. Kelsey shares her purpose journey of studying abroad and looking to become a missionary, when she felt God pushing her in a different direction. She felt God telling her, “There is nothing more noble than to do what I created you to do”. So she started writing, and started in marketing, before she became an author and podcaster.   We also dive in on the importance of mentorship. I can speak for Bethany and I when I say, we would not be where we are today without the mentors that we have. It is important to find people who are better than  you in different areas of your life, and learn from them. Let them speak into your lift and guide you. You can learn from anyone. Also, just because they are a great business person, doesn't mean  they have to mentor you on marriage. Or just because they are a great person of faith, doesn't mean they have to mentor you on fitness. Let them mentor you where they are good at. Things We Discussed In The Episode/Episode Highlights:  Mentorship vs Discipleship What is a noble purpose or thing to do in your life? Can anyone be a mentor? How can you find a mentor?
