Show Notes:Programming for Adult Groups Different price points = different expectations and options for individualizationA system of regressions and progressions ensures no one is held back, no one is left behind and everyone is safe and successfulThe rule of 3 and 10: your operations and systems need to change whenever you multiply by 3 or 10… 3 people, 10 people, 30 people, 100 people, 300 people, etc…The philosophy stays the same, but the methods change. If you have a universal belief system all your workouts should look similar.Do we have the equipment? Do we have the space? Is it safe for a large group?Intro Program (micro)We do have the same ability to assess people signing up for group training due to the lower price point 8 week intro program that provides guardrails and gives up a mini-assessment and address all our movement patterns (squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, low impact)After that the adults groups are on a 12 month rotational program We write ONE program that is then adapted to the individual. NOT 10 individualized programs. If you want an individualized program you pay the high price for that aka personal trainingEx. The group is kettlebell swinging but the new group member will be hinging or deadlifting. The kettlebell swing is advanced and earned. Cast a really big net to catch a lot of fish, but you won't catch all the fish and that's okay.Have workout number 12 and beyond in your mind when you're setting up an introductory program and starting out. Don't try to crush them with volume or intensity. Think about and talk about the next workout.Training StructureThe first few workouts are just understanding where things are, how things work, where things are, who's part of the community - teach them the recipe! Don't single the new individual out. Keep them moving within the group. Be okay with not completing the whole workout(s) the first few weeks. You DON'T have to do an assessment on the first session. You can just make it a meet and greet and save the “physical” assessment for the second workout12 sessions and beyond (macro)Each month (phase) has a different focus - tempos, isos, eccentrics, hypertrophy, density, circuits, complexesSeasonal training - in season, off season, maintenanceThere's a bit of “enter-trainment” needed when training people train with you for a long timePersonality typesCheck the box types Goal oriented typesTraining focused typesHow to develop great “adult athletes/clients”?Nurture relationshipsGym cultureBuying into their goalsKeep Pushing themBook Club recommendation:Kevin: How We Learn to Move: A Revolution in the Way We Coach & Practice Sports Skills by Rob GrayBrendon: Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It by Chris Voss

You may not have trouble getting clients, but you'll struggle to keep them.Ask your clients and athletes to tell you about their needs, values and concerns. Use this information to connect and communicate with them. If they're timid to begin training with you, you're better off recognizing that from the beginning and easing them in through a few phone calls and a gym walk-through or inviting them to watch you coach a session. The more you can involve people in developing a plan that fits into their schedule, challenges them just above their current physical and mental abilities, and is sound in its principles, the more enjoyable and sustainable your training will be.People will buy in if they have a say in the process. Some may view this as coddling, but it's not; it's understanding. Show NotesToday's Discussion Points: Risk v Reward and Durability Thread from StrengthCoach.com - Is strength training for performance the same as strength training for durability? Is it possible to be more durable but less explosive, or does higher strength/power in most situations translate to reduced injury risk? And on the flip side - is it possible to actually gain performance, but increase risk of injury? What might be an example of that?- The Risk vs. Reward Whiteboard Photo- Survivorship bias- Goldilocks training - Certified Functional Strength Coach- Only 20% of people need “specialized” training. Most of us (80%) need the same thing.- “Most people you are going to train are a really good Toyota Camry” - Pat Davidson. Fixing the car = Rehab. A Ferrari is the 20% that need the specialized aggressive stuff- The cart is also context dependent… Sometimes machine based training is HIGH reward depending on that individual's goals and where they're starting from.- Grandma doesn't need to deadlift 225. We don't do Straight Bar or Trap Bar Deadlift with adults. We don't do Hops or Olympics lifts or run timed sprints.- If your client can't work, they can't get paid, and you can't get paid.- If they keep score, there are playoffs, your heart rate hits its anaerobic threshold during the event, and your paycheck or scholarship depends on your training, then you fall into the sport performance bucket. In-season Training - the "Why" and the "How"

Show NotesToday's Discussion Points:1.) In-season Training - the WhyIt's possible now to play the same sport year round and in-season training is almost year roundDo you value playing more games or value improving and recovering physically?“You won't have to GET ready if you always STAY ready.”You will atrophy during the season, you give up strength and muscle to play the game. But the goal should be to atrophy the least amount possible, and less than your competitor. It's not just missing lifts, it's the increase in stress, pressure, travel, nutrition on the run, and lack of a routineThe team with their best players playing at the end of the year has the best chance of winning in the postseason2.) The HowIf you stay consistent (x2 week in season) and select the right exercises and intensity you don't need to worry about getting sore or jeopardizing performanceSoft tissue work, stretch, short warm up, lift a few heavy things, do some single leg and core stuff, go home (30-45 minute workouts)Drop the volume and duration, keep the intensity highMinimal Effective Dose! If you do just enough, some athlete may actually make gains in-seasonRules: 1 heavy set, no impact (no jumping or running), no conditioning, don't skip rolling and stretchingThe best conditioning is a well organized practice - John Wooden on LeadershipBook Club recommendation:Kevin: The Happiness Advantage & Before Happiness by Shawn ArcherBrendon: The Back Mechanic by Stuart McGillWhat's coming up next?CFSC Los Gatos Feb. 27th - CFSC Level 1 Certification | February 27th, 2022 - Los Altos, CAMBSC winter seminar - Feb 26th & 27th Virtual & In-personOur other upcoming CFSC events
