Angela meets Paul Larsen, a former triathlete and expert in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and fat metabolism, who shares his journey from competitive sports to academia, detailing his extensive research and work with Olympic programs in Australia and New Zealand. Together they examine the importance of understanding training stress versus life stress, the benefits of zone 2 training for recovery and fat metabolism, and how wearable technology can optimise training plans KEY TAKEAWAYS The heart rate zones are crucial for optimising training. Zone 2, calculated as 180 minus your age, is essential for enhancing fat metabolism and overall endurance. It's important to avoid spending too much time in Zone 3, as it can lead to increased cortisol levels and hinder fat loss. Engaging in low-intensity activities, such as walking, can significantly improve recovery, enhance fat metabolism, and support overall health. These activities help balance the nervous system and promote better sleep. HIIT involves longer intervals (2-5 minutes) that improve cardiovascular fitness and VO2 max, while SIT consists of short, maximal efforts (20-40 seconds) that recruit fast-twitch muscle fibres and enhance mitochondrial density. Both training stress and life stress impact heart rate variability and overall health. Managing life stressors is crucial for maintaining a healthy metabolic state, as high stress can lead to increased insulin levels and central adiposity. BEST MOMENTS "It's always the context over the content. Every person listening here is a little bit different." "The heart rate variability is a surrogate of the status of the balance of the nervous system." "If you can just get out there, get out the door, and do just what you said, you'll get quite a bit." "Zone three gets some general bad rap because it's so easy for us to kind of move into this one." In this episode, I answer a question about only running zone 2 for a Ironman run. Send questions through to tim@trainsmooth.com
The discussion centers on the role of Zone 2 training in CrossFit, highlighting the debate about whether low-intensity cardio is necessary for improving performance. While Zone 2 helps build an aerobic base and aids recovery, critics argue it's less effective for the high-intensity, fast-twitch muscle demands of CrossFit. Athletes with less cardio experience may benefit from Zone 2, but others with strong aerobic foundations should focus more on explosive strength training. Additional topics include the importance of addressing weaknesses, balancing cardio with strength, weight loss benefits of Zone 2, and common awkward moments experienced by new CrossFitters.

Submit it here!Full Episode Releases September 10th!Ever wondered why Zone 2 training is the secret weapon for boosting mitochondrial health and not just another buzzword in fitness? Join us as we unlock the science behind exercise intensities and navigate through the five distinct training zones. You'll discover where Zone 2 fits in—just below the first lactate threshold—keeping fat oxidation high and preventing lactate buildup. We break down how heart rate can be used as an indirect measure of these zones and emphasize the importance of understanding individual physiological differences. We also delve into how your fitness level dictates when lactate begins to accumulate, influencing the effectiveness of your workouts.Maximizing your Zone 2 training can drastically enhance mitochondrial efficiency and build essential physiological systems. We'll reveal why lower-intensity exercise harnesses fat for energy, unlike high-intensity workouts that shift towards carbohydrates. Understand the crossover concept, where your body transitions from burning fat to carbohydrates, and get insights into sex differences in exercise. Premenopausal women, in particular, may have an edge in fat oxidation during sub-maximal exercise. We also explore the mitochondrial capacity in female training, comparing moderately trained females to their male counterparts, and discuss why training status and response are crucial for metabolic health. Zone 2 training is a hot topic now, and rightly so. You might be surprised to learn more about the full range of benefits that training in this zone can have. If you're able to engage in the process of zone 2 training, and have patience, a few months of working in this zone will result in amazing fitness gains for the next season. Some of them are: Improved fat oxidisation at sub-maximal efforts Better lactate clearance capacity Faster recovery from training sessions, leading to improved consistency However, the benefits that a lot of people may not think about are the ones that improve your overall health as a human being, and your longevity. Please remember that you're a human first, before you're an athlete, so these benefits would ideally have a much higher priority in your mind. They are: Improved longterm mitochondrial function (which naturally declines with ageing) Better resistance to metabolic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and obesity The bottom line is that if you fully embrace zone 2 training, your longterm health prospects will improve, along with your athletic performance. In today's podcast I've outlined the above in more details, and provide suggestions on how to incorporate this training into your own programme. In the podcast I referred to a podcast conversation between Dr Peter Attia and Inigo San Milan (coach to Tadej Pogacar) about this specific subject. They go a lot deeper than I can in 10 minutes. It's well worth a listen. Deep dive back into Zone 2 If you're a new listener, you can subscribe to the podcast HERE so that you never miss an episode! This week, we're diving back into the inbox to answer questions from our listeners – thanks to everyone who has submitted questions so far. WHOOP Senior Sport Scientist Chris Chapman is here to answer your questions about the popular Zone 2 Cardio space and strength training. We had a number of questions come in after our Zone 2 Training episode with Paul Laursen, that's Episode 222 if you haven't listened yet. We've also received some great questions about strength training and our Strength Trainer product episode. That's Episode 219 with our CTO Jaime Waydo. Chris discusses navigating strain goals and recoveries with Zone 2 (2:45), incorporating Zone 2 into marathon training (7:05), how heart rate zones differ from person to person (11:55), identifying your Zone 2 heart rate range (14:20), how heart rate zones can change over time (20:20), combining strength training and endurance training (24:00), and the difference between free weights and machines (38:00).Resources:Episode 222 - Paul LaursenEpisode 219 - Strength TrainerSupport the show

Did you hear Andy Coggan on the Inside Exercise podcast? He goes against the grain on Zone 2 training. There is longstanding misconception that you need to oxidize fat to become better at oxidizing fat. "We are good at this without training”. I'm a huge fan of Zone 2 endurance training, so I'm a bit biased here, but at the same time, I don't agree with everything in the podcast...all roads don't lead to Rome. If you're high intensity days are Sweet Spot, good luck at a road race or criterium or gravel race (more on that in an upcoming episode). He does not "pull punches" when San Millan's obsession with Zone 2 training comes up. "The single most important aspect of endurance performance is Muscular metabolic fitness (lactate threshold) vs cardiovascular fitness (vo2max)" “People think that lab based testing is the gold standard", and that is not true! PERFORMANCE ITSELF IS! Science is not the gold standard. Definitely give the episode a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6DhfMJH84E

The most fun time of our week is here: podcast Tuesday! The main training topic was on Zone 2, focusing on what it is and how to find it for yourself. If you're anything like us, understanding the metabolic and aerobic physiology will explain so much about training theory, and you'll get way faster in the process. Zone 2 is like Hansel, it's so hot right now. We also talked about some nuances of iron intake, and how appropriate supplementation can CHANGE YOUR LIFE. Did we give a multivitamin containing iron to our baby Leo as a case study? Yes! Is he is ready to take on the baby Tour de France? You betcha! Get the padded baby shorts ready. And you better believe that was just the beginning! Other topics: 3 TV show recommendations, how to encourage adaptation through fatigue, what comes after overload training, a bunch of thoughts on the Gorge trail races, why philosopher Eckhart Tolle is our favorite running coach, some thoughts on artificial intelligence (it makes a great DJ!), the importance of celebrating yourself, and so much more. The episode finishes with a beautiful listener email, so make sure you stick around for that inspiration! As Coach Eckhart says: "On a deeper level you are already complete, and when you realize that, there is a playful, joyous energy behind what you do." Do you think he likes hill strides and pizza? We bet he does! Does he coach babies for bike races? He does now! YOU ALL COMPLETE US. For a weekly bonus episode (and bi-weekly newsletter), make sure you're subscribed to our Patreon.
