Episode 51 of the “Coach Hos Podcast” we have the honor to speaking with Coach Mike Boyle, MBSC https://youtu.be/P9MP7YGZOhc 0-5 Introduction of Mike Boyle . Should high school athletes turn back to sport between 6-9 months mark post operative ACL repair? The data is clear, earlier return, higher chance of re tearing. Understanding importance of the ability to decelerate. Not ready to return until athlete can decelerate under high force. The problem with "decel drills" being used and not testing an individual under running 100%. Interpreting the FLY 10 TEST. Looking at athlete's best vertical jump. 5-10 The single leg hop and triple leg hop test is antiquated and not practical. How physical therapy is going backwards as a profession with sports performance. Poor criteria for return to play. 10-15 Machine company pushing products and influencing rehab and training environments. Leg extensions are not as important as being implied. Plenty of functional exercises that will isolate the quads. The poor status and presentation of athletes being discharged from physical therapy. Go to exercise is the split squat and assault bike sprints! Athletes should not be in pain during rehab! 15-20 The problem with the Biodex and isolated testing as a hang the hat on metric. Considering multiple factors. Really diving into the "research" and looking at bias and self funded researching, old school "quad and hamstring" talk. 20-25 Understanding why functional movements are important for sports performance and translating into the sport. ACL multi factorial, considering the turf and the shoes. Turf and shoe companies want no responsibility for contributing to tears. Injuries still on grass, still overall issues with poor training even at professional level. Importance of unilateral hopping bounding and progressions. 10 single leg squats with 30% of bodyweight. 25-30 Importance of single leg jumping towards the mid line. Understanding female puberty contributing to injury. Gaining weight in breast size and wider hips but not enough muscle mass. Wrong shoes on wrong surfaces, Body position affecting injury in sports, field hockey vs soccer and lacrosse. Knee bent position. Problem with "all purpose" cleats. Rehab needs to get better. Approaching 4 month mark and starting to progress into strength and conditioning. 30-35 Poor programming in therapy and wasting time. Understanding growth spurts and proper progressions to establish check points and getting strong at weak links, no away around it. Plyometric progressions, able to single leg hop 5 times over a 12-inch hurdle. The ability to demonstrate "athleticism".  35-40 Power and reactivity, strength and deceleration techniques. Understanding good trainers and good physical therapists. What it takes to be in a late stage return to play setting. CSCS vs. CFSC certification. Book application vs. practical. 40-43 Close Out COACH JOE HOS: Coach Hos, owner of SPORTS REHAB PA/FLA. Inspired by the trend on social media I share what my professional development plan would be if I was starting over in my career, fresh out of college. There are some big missing pieces in the industry as far as movement science and bridging the gap between rehab and performance that would be the focus as well as learning about a more whole organism lens of view earlier including the viscera, nervous system, and neurology. I reflect on the 20+ years of continuing education and professional development I have taken and pull out some of the highlights and still solid education that I pull from years later. I also emphasize the important role mentorship plays in the integration and assimilation of information and the art or creativity that patient care requires. Resources mentioned:Twitter thread from Michael Boyle EXOS education CFSC education Polestar Pilates Principles CourseBarral Institute LTAP Level 1 course Movement Impairment Syndromes Shirley Sahrmann textbookConsidering the viscera as a source of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction is a great way to ensure a more true whole body approach to care, however it can be a bit overwhelming on where to start, which is exactly why I created the Visceral Referral Cheat Sheet. In-season Training - the WhyIt's possible now to play the same sport year round and in-season training is almost year roundDo you value playing more games or value improving and recovering physically?“You won't have to GET ready if you always STAY ready.”You will atrophy during the season, you give up strength and muscle to play the game. But the goal should be to atrophy the least amount possible, and less than your competitor. It's not just missing lifts, it's the increase in stress, pressure, travel, nutrition on the run, and lack of a routineThe team with their best players playing at the end of the year has the best chance of winning in the postseason2.) The HowIf you stay consistent (x2 week in season) and select the right exercises and intensity you don't need to worry about getting sore or jeopardizing performanceSoft tissue work, stretch, short warm up, lift a few heavy things, do some single leg and core stuff, go home (30-45 minute workouts)Drop the volume and duration, keep the intensity highMinimal Effective Dose! They're absolutely free! https://artofcoaching.com/podcastreflections/   Imagine this; you wake up alone in a hospital. Every time you touch your skin, no matter how gently, you bruise. To the point, if you roll over wrong or you scratch an itch, or you rub your eye, you may wake up the next day with hundreds of bruises. Not only that, but you're also told by doctors and surgeons that you have a disease, an affliction that only one in a million people will ever get. How would you act? What goes through your mind? If you've ever spent time in a hospital, you know what that environment feels like. You know the smell. You know the sounds, and the footprints. You see the urgency of doctors and nurses, the beeps, the clangs, and the bangs.  There's a deafening silence while you sit in your own head thinking, "where am I, and what's going to happen?". Everyone, our guest today has an extraordinary story, and everything I've just described is a part of it. Brendon Rearick came back and is in remission from a very rare condition called Aplastic anemia. I'm going to let him tell this story, but I encourage you to listen up. As with every episode, please understand that nothing in these podcast episodes is just for strength coaches. Nothing is for people in any vacuum type situation. The lessons we experience in our lives are the very things that shape our outcome and our profession and our personal lives. So take heed, listen, and write notes. There's a lot of great stuff coming your way on today's episode. Brendon's personal mission is to spread the positive by-products of coaching and movement as far as he can using strength and conditioning as his platform. With a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Brendon got his start at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) in Woburn, MA. The growth-focused environment at MBSC motivated Brendon in a way he had never experienced. Over a few short years he progressed to become the Program Director and earned his massage therapy license. Soon thereafter, he started an education company with four co-workers – Certified Functional Strength Coach. In five years, CFSC has certified over 6,500 trainers in over 50 countries. Now a California resident, Brendon travels and coaches often for Certified Functional Strength Coach, and has recently become an active speaker at the Perform Better summit conferences. His next venture will be opening a gym Train Smarter and Harder with his wife Jenny in the beginning of 2020. This is one of my favourite episodes EVER! I am so honoured to have my friend, colleague and mentor Mike Boyle on the show. Mike was so influential in my development as a strength coach. In college, I read his best selling book “Functional Training for Sports” and it changed the way I saw training from that moment forward. Mike is one of the most decorated strength and conditioning coaches in world of sports. From Olympic gold medals in hockey to NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB champions to collegiate and high school athletes and everything in between. He has also developed some of todays top S&C coaches through his Certified Functional Strength Coach certifications and his internship at his Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning Facilities. This is where this conversation took place. I had the opportunity to speak to his staff and share with them my LoadXplode 1 day workshop. BOOM! Humbled! So what do you chat about when you have your mentor in front of you for an hour? Everything under the sun including the the early days of the @perfrombetter summits, his keynote speech at this year’s event, what it means to be a mentor, finding a work/life balance, marriage, his father, kids and how he is preparing for his next #DreamBIG which could be his biggest accomplishment yet! So many gems, so many golden nugget take aways and so many laughs between to coaches who never take themselves too serious. That may just be the secret to life! I am so grateful for the time we had together and I will play this one back time and time again to remind myself what is truly important in life. Thanks Coach! Go to http://k-motion.com and check out their K-Coach and The Loop membership. Have you tried screening your athlete with real time accurate data collection? Show Notes are at www.bdnow.org More info about this book and Andrew Fisher are at www.bighunger.org   Andrew Fisher Andrew Fisher has worked in the anti-hunger field for twenty-five years, as the executive director of national and local food groups, and as a researcher, organizer, policy advocate, and coalition builder. He has led successful efforts to gain passage of multiple pieces of federal food and nutrition legislation. Chronic hunger and food insecurity trends across the U.S. have not changed, despite the rise of charity. Food banks and food pantries were meant to be a stopgap measure, but manufacturing jobs never came back, recession followed, and the “emergency food system” became an industry. In 1994, Andy Fisher co-founded and led the Community Food Security Coalition (CFSC), a first of its kind national alliance of hundreds of groups working on urban food access and local food. Fisher led CFSC as Executive Director for 15 years, creating and gaining momentum for the concept of community food security while building the food movement as a whole. He successfully led advocacy efforts and passage of crucial federal nutrition legislation to address food security, including the establishment of the Community Food Projects and Farm to School grants. Fisher is an expert on a variety of food system topics and tactics, including food policy councils, community food assessments, healthy corner stores, coalition building, and farm to cafeteria programs. Fisher is an activist, NGO consultant, and an adjunct teacher at Portland University in Oregon. His book, Big Hunger, is the launch for a new vision for how to untangle corporate interests from food banks and the anti-hunger movement. The 2016 election reminded us of the depth of economic insecurity across America, and of the political implications that come from ignoring this populist angst. The decline of Rust Belt communities since the 1980s has been paralleled by the rapid growth of food banks. Instead of challenging the government and corporations to provide living wages and good jobs, to support unions and oppose globalization, the anti-hunger movement has instead built alliances with Walmart, Tyson, and Monsanto, among other socially irresponsible companies. Big Hunger reveals the damage caused by this hunger-industrial complex, and offers a new vision for the anti-hunger movement to eliminate hunger through a focus on health, economic justice and local economies.
