Video recording of this episode is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OcxwmDuUeU&ab_channel=UCD-UniversityCollegeDublin Henry Glassie is College Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, and has published widely in the fields of material culture and vernacular architecture. His contribution to the discipline of Irish Folklore and Ethnology has been exceptional. Having lived in Ballymenone, Co. Fermanagh, for almost a decade in the 1970s, Professor Glassie published a number of studies inspired by the community there, including All Silver and No Brass (1975), Passing the Time in Ballymenone (1982) and The Stars of Ballymenone (2006). These books are landmark works which have become classic texts for students of Folklore in Ireland and abroad, along with many other items on Professor Glassie's long list of publications. Henry has rendered invaluable service to our understanding of Irish popular tradition and vernacular culture, and he can truly be described as a towering figure in the study of Irish Folklore for more than half a century. Even in his retirement, he remains a staunch and committed friend to Ireland and to the people he worked with while carrying out fieldwork here. Henry has had a long and extremely positive relationship with UCD since the establishment of the Department of Irish Folklore in the university in the early 1970s. With the approach of the fiftieth anniversary of his first major publication on Irish Folklore, All Silver and No Brass, it was deemed especially appropriate for the University to take the opportunity to honour Professor Glassie, and on Wednesday 21 May 2025, Henry was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from UCD, in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the growing area of Irish Studies in general, and to the field of Irish Folklore and Ethnology in particular. It was a great honour and personal privilege for me to sit and 'Pass the Time' with Henry, and over the course of ninety minutes we explored his background, interests, intellectual life, and experiences of field work, as well as delving into the topics of place, creativity, art, meaning, identity, belonging and despair; invoking old friends such as Fred B. Kniffen, E. Estyn Evans, Michael J. Murphy, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, Ellen Cutler, Tommy Love, Michael Boyle, Peter Flanagan, and Hugh Nolan as we trooped our way homewards. My thanks to all my colleagues at the NFC, as well as Susan Lysaght, Sandra Collins, Evelyn Flanagan, Andrew Fogarty, Veronica Aguilar Olmos, Dominic Martella for making this episode possible, and - most especially - to Henry and Pravina for their generosity, openness and kindness.

Meet our guest, Michael Boyle, a seasoned protector of Philadelphia's streets. With decades of experience under his belt, this retired Lieutenant of the Philadelphia Police Department walks us through the gritty realities of his tenure, providing a potent blend of wisdom and insight. From dealing with gut-wrenching sexual assault cases to navigating the convoluted labyrinth of detective work, there's no aspect of crime-fighting that Michael hasn't faced head-on. Our journey begins with Michael's reflections on child sexual assault cases, where he helps us understand the long-lasting impact on victims and their families. Drawing on his personal experiences, he offers a window into the invaluable role of the Philadelphia Children's Alliance, an organization that has been the beacon of hope for many traumatized families over the past three decades. As we traverse the complex terrain of detective work, Michael brings to light a 1975 case that showcases the power of learning and experience in law enforcement. As we move ahead, we plunge into the dark world of human trafficking. Michael unravels the process of obtaining a DNA search warrant and the unique challenges of communicating with non-English speaking victims. We also address the insidious rise of drug addiction, with a focus on the dangerous increase of fentanyl, xylazine, and other life-threatening drugs on our streets, especially in the Kensington area. Support the showMake sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccolo

Steven is having a bad day! Luckily, he was about to sit down with our next guest, Michael Boyle, a licensed psychotherapist specializing in work with relationships and trauma. Orphaned temporarily from his recording studio due to a COVID outbreak, Steven dons his backpack and his new mobile recording rig to host the podcast outside on a blanket down by the river! Michael Boyle is a former college athlete and NHL Hopeful, who after suffering multiple head injuries became critically depressed. As a lifelong learner devoted to psychological and spiritual growth, Mike searched for over 20 years to find the very best tools, perspectives and methods to empower himself to go from “surviving to thriving.” After studying the intersection of science and spirituality, NLP, clinical hypnosis, nutrition, exercise, and optimal flow states. Michael became a licensed therapist (LMFT, CDBT), but switched to a coaching model because he found that the typical therapy context wasn't helping people create true and lasting change. After thousands of hours of clinical experience and training, being a Coach seemed to provide a more effective balance for clients not just to heal but to thrive. Mike developed the Inner Advantage Method (I AM), a curriculum for turning hard times into holistic happiness. He founded the ALL Together Academy, the Relating Renaissance, and the Brotherhood of Men (whose mission is to empower men to overcome isolation, shame, and anger in order to become the rockstar dads, irresistible husbands, kick-ass professionals, providers and contributors they are built to be.) Steve and Mike open up about toxic masculinity and the stigma behind being a sensitive man. They further debunk the idea behind the starving artist, talk about their spouses and why it is so valuable for artists to have partners who support their unique ways of life (Mike's wife Tania is a musician). They also discuss concepts from psychology like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, somatic therapy, EMDR, PTSD, and the empowering idea of moving from Post-Traumatic stress to Post-Traumatic growth. As Michael explains by analogy: “Every acorn has the capacity to become an oak tree. … What we can do as human beings is we can nurture our acorn, and we can put it in fertile soil, and we can give it water and sunshine, we can create the conditions that make it more likely to become an oak tree. But we don't make ourselves into oak trees, nature does that. It's natural for us to grow and thrive. …  And when we grow and thrive, we become an oak tree… By becoming an oak tree, we are beneficial.  We create: We create environments for bugs and for birds and for kids to put a swing on. … The world misses out if [you or I do] not blossom and flourish and thrive and drop [our] acorns so that others can benefit. So it is in our design, it is already inherent in us to become an oak tree.”   Guest: Michael Boyle Website: https://www.alltogether.love/ FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/alltogetherloving FB Group ALL-TOGETHER-THRIVING: https://www.facebook.com/groups/alltogetherthriving Join The Relating Revolution: https://www.facebook.com/alltogetherloving/posts/10160601102702985 IG: @alltogetheracademy  Email: mike@alltogether.love Mike on the 10,000 No's Podcast   Episode References A Bronx Tale  The Power Of Bad (book) The Mask You Live In (movie) Fuga (Tania's band) Lar C. Darlings, this time has been so wild. So many of us who are super sensitive souls, need a lot of support when things get this hard. This week, Sophia brought in Michael Boyle, the Depression Slayer, for his expert teachings. Michael has an extraordinary collection of tools that help him and he so generously shares with all of us. Even if depression isn't a label you fit inside, his advice is pertinent for everyone who wants more care in their lives. This week they talk about: The faith journey that caterpillars go on, turning into goo with no idea what a butterfly is or what kind of life is in store for them. The main tool for mental health maintenance, which is, well, maintenance. Michael talks about it like a garden that needs to be cultivated every day. "Just keep weeding and seeding." This time which is so wild makes normal garden maintenance much more like gardening during a monsoon and it can be so sane-making when we treat it as such.
