Hundra år gammal film! Tre timmar var den också! Det var dags att ta sig an den ökända klassikern The Birth of a Nation...
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview The Last Supreme Susaye Green. Neil will interview Susaye to find out about The Supremes, Twenty Feet From Stardom, and Her latest album. Born in Houston, Texas, she began her professional career at the age of 12 years. After moving to New York City as a teenager, she appeared in various commercials and attended and graduated from the New York City High School of Performing Arts. Prior to joining The Supremes, Greene sang with Ray Charles' Raelettes and Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove, which paired her with Deniece Williams and Shirley Brewer. In 1973, she sang lead as a guest vocalist on New Birth's hit "Until It's Time for You to Go" (a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's song). A successful singer and songwriter as well, Greene has written hit records for Michael Jackson, Deniece Williams, and many others. Greene was a member of The Supremes from early 1976 to summer of 1977 (replacing Cindy Birdsong), and performed on their last two albums, High Energy and Mary, Scherrie & Susaye. Working alongside original member Mary Wilson and Scherrie Payne, Susaye quickly found her niche in the group and amongst the group's legions of fans. Susaye took lead on "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," in the group's live shows, which never failed to garner a standing ovation, and recorded "High Energy", the title song from the High Energy album. On June 12, 1977, the Supremes performed their farewell concert at the Drury Lane Theater in London and disbanded.
Episode 14 - Jamison and Jason return to talk about the 2014 Oscar Winner.
A number of former US soldiers have recently published books which focus on their time serving with US forces in the second Iraq War. Phil Klay's series of short stories - Redeployment - and Kevin Powers' debut collection of poems - Letter Composed During a Lull in Fighting - are just two books which cover the first-hand experience of war, and its physical, emotional and psychological effects. Phil Klay and Kevin Powers discuss war as inspiration for literature and their own experience of desert warfare. 20 Feet From Stardom won the Academy Award for Best Documentary at this year's Oscars. The film looks behind the stars of music to focus on their backing singers and the important contribution these singers have made to the history of pop, as well as the difficulties of breaking out into the spotlight. Jacqueline Springer reviews the film. Union is a play by Scottish playwright Tim Barrow which explores the 1707 Act of Union with England which linked the English and Scottish Parliaments. The play examines the context of bankruptcy and political turmoil which led the Scottish politicians to accept bribes in exchange for supporting the act. Tim Barrow discusses the pertinence of the subject to the forthcoming independence referendum and explains why he thinks Scottish children should be given better education on this period of history. To mark Radio 4's forthcoming Character Invasion Day - when fictional characters will be taking over the network - Front Row asked five of Britain's leading actors to talk about their experience of playing an iconic character. Jane Horrocks discusses playing the withdrawn LV with a talent for mimicking great singers in the award-winning play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, and the subsequent film.
Allen Toussaint is a singer, songwriter, producer and all around legend. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer joins us this week to talk about his 60+ year career in music and how New Orleans is in everything he does. Jim and Greg also talk with Morgan Neville, the now Oscar winning director of "20 Feet from Stardom."
"They were professional chameleons, yet they had to stay true to who they were as artists." Director Morgan Neville talks about his Oscar-nominated documentary.
In which Thom & Travis discuss the wonder of expectations exceeded (The Lego Movie), the indifference of expectations met (I, Frankenstein), the frustration of expectations thwarted (our failed Aliens commentary), and the odd phenomenon of being elated and disappointed simultaneously (the new Transformers trailer). Plus, a new golden age of Gen X animation reboots, remembering -- and looking forward to -- Veronica Mars, another round of Best Picture nominee bingo, and the return of The Spoon!

Over an astounding career in which she has sung all styles of popular music as leader and as support singer, Merry Clayton is vocal royalty. Among the legends Clayton has supported are Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Quincy Jones, Etta James, Barbara Streisand, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Bobby Womack, Art Garfunkel, Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Diana Ross, Leon Russell, The Jazz Crusaders and Elvis Presley. From Hollywood to Broadway and around the world, Merry brings audiences and peers to their feet. In 2013, her amazing life story is covered in the award-winning background singers’ documentary, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM. This encore in the spotlight coincides with the long-overdue release of Sony Legacy’s THE BEST OF MERRY CLAYTON, celebrating her golden years on Ode Records. After growing up in the church in New Orleans and Los Angeles, her first pop recording was a duet with Bobby Darin in the early '60s. Merry became featured singer with Ray Charles’ girl group The Raelets in the mid-'60s, appeared on several of Joe Cocker’s releases including album WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS and single “Feelin’ Alright,” on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s anthem “Sweet Home Alabama,” and originated the role of “Acid Queen” on the inaugural recording of the rock opera TOMMY with The Who & the London Symphony Orchestra. But Clayton will forever be recognized for her impassioned "rape/murder" solo on The Rolling Stones' 1969 classic “Gimme Shelter.” That led to Lou Adler signing Merry in 1970 to his Ode Records and her debut solo album, GIMME SHELTER - her first of three for the company.

Two films about the story behind the story. "20 Feet from Stardom," spotlights the singers behind the singers. "Man of Steel" takes itself seriously as an origin story.
