You don't need to be a great musician like Steven Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen or Paul Shaffer to understand the greatness of Darlene Love.  Perhaps they understand it on a more musical level, but anyone who has ever heard that amazing voice gets it.  Her songs radiate joy, none more so than the classic of this season, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”  Darlene's musical journey has included glorious heights, stressful lows and one of the longest and most satisfying second acts in American musical history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Blues Legacy: Foundations of Modern Music

Exploring the Soulful Melodies of Blues Christmas Music Journey through the evocative world of blues Christmas music, discovering its historical roots and modern interpretations that have shaped holiday traditions. As the holiday season unfolds, the rich and emotional world of blues Christmas music offers a unique auditory experience. This genre, known for its heartfelt expressions and deep-rooted cultural significance, beautifully intertwines with the festive spirit, creating a distinct blend of melancholy and joy. The tradition of blues in Christmas music stretches back to the genre's early days. Pioneers like Blind Lemon Jefferson masterfully combined their soulful melodies with festive themes, imparting a poignant depth to the holiday season. Jefferson, who tragically passed just before Christmas in 1929, left an enduring legacy in this niche, highlighting the blues' capacity to convey a spectrum of human emotions during this joyous time. Featured Blues Christmas Songs and Artists Lightnin' Hopkins - "Merry Christmas": A classic released in 1953, this song exemplifies the traditional blues sound infused with holiday cheer, showcasing Hopkins' storytelling prowess. Jimmy Witherspoon - "How I Hate To See Xmas Come Around": This 1948 melancholic classic reflects the blues' ability to express the more somber aspects of the festive season. Sister Rosetta Tharpe - "O Little Town of Bethlehem": A gospel-blues rendition of a classic carol, highlighting Tharpe's spiritual roots and vocal power. Charles Brown - "Merry Christmas": A pivotal 1947 track that has become a cornerstone in the blues Christmas music repertoire. Chuck Berry - "Spending Christmas": Berry's 1964 ballad, a sentimental deviation from his usual upbeat style, showcases the emotional range of blues during Christmas. Albert King - "Christmas (Comes But Once A Year)": An illustration of how blues can adapt and evolve, blending festive cheer with soulful rhythms. Clarence Carter - "Back Door Santa": A playful and funky 1968 song that adds a unique narrative to Christmas music. The blues genre's adaptability is further exemplified by contemporary artists who have reinterpreted classic Christmas blues songs. Eric Clapton's 2018 Christmas album and Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" are prime examples of how modern musicians infuse blues elements into holiday music, bridging genres and generations. The emotional depth and versatility of blues music shine particularly bright during the holiday season. Ken Womack's guest this week is Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Darlene Love (born Darlene Wright). Best known for her holiday hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” in addition to her vocals on records by “girl group” The Crystals and her acting roles such as in the “Lethal Weapon” film series, Love's beginnings were modest, having started out singing in the Los Angeles church choir where her father was the pastor. She began working in 1962 with notorious producer Phil Spector (who'd given her the “Love” surname for recording, and who also worked on several Beatles-related projects). In light of his later troubles, Love explains to Womack, “I will say this: He was not the same guy to me back then that he later came to be.” In this conversation she dives deep into her storied career, opens up about working with Phil Spector, and answers a complex question: Were the Beatles influenced by Black musicians, or did they steal from them? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everythingfabfour/support

In this special holiday episode of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums, our new podcast on Amazon Music, we delve into 1963's "A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector", an album that changed the way we look at holiday music. In 2019, Rolling Stone named it the best Christmas album of all time.A labor of love that pulled together all the top girl groups, including the Crystals and the Ronettes, the album was initially an ill-fated flop, dropping the day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated (or so the legend goes). After being reissued in 1972 the record found its place in both the holiday and rock & roll canons, and inspired everyone from the Beach Boys to Bruce Springsteen to take a crack at Christmas standards. There was darkness under that festive tree, however, as the infamous perfectionist Spector directed artists on the record with an iron fist and later took his obsession with guns to a far darker place when he killed actress Lana Clarkson in 2003.Spector was unable to talk with Rolling Stone's News Editor Brenna Ehrlich for this episode (as he is serving time for second-degree murder), but she did chat with Darlene Love of the Blossoms about the fame of "Christmas Baby Please Come Home," La La Brooks of the Crystals about conditions in the studio, and Brian Wilson about how Spector inspired the Beach Boys. She also checked in with Spector fan, journalist Greil Marcus, to talk about the album's enduring fame. Later in the episode, host Brittany Spanos discusses the history, allure, and occasional ridiculousness of holiday music with Rolling Stone staffers Rob Sheffield and Jon Dolan, as well as comedian, Desus & Mero writer-producer, and podcast host Josh Gondelman.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It is Christmas time in Richmond. Roy and Keeley's attempt at a romantic 'Sexy Christmas' is derailed by Roy's niece Phoebe visiting, feeling insecure after a boy at school teased her for bad breath. Higgins and his family host a Christmas party for the players from overseas. Dani, Sam, and many of the other players come to the party, bringing their own Christmas traditions with them, pleasantly surprising Higgins and his wife. Meanwhile, Ted plans to spend Christmas video calling Henry and Michelle, but the expensive drone Ted buys his son causes Henry to run off to play with it. A dejected Ted starts drinking, but Rebecca, who suspected Ted would feel alone in his first post-divorce Christmas, recruits him to do some last-minute gift-giving to underprivileged children in Richmond. Roy and Keeley attempt to find a dentist on Christmas to determine the source of Phoebe's halitosis, discovering that the new antihistamine Phoebe takes for her cat allergy is the cause. The episode ends with Ted and Rebecca joining the party at the Higgins', performing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" on the road outside their house.

In general, the art that we love means something to us. It makes us feel happy, sad, it comforts us, it gets us riled up, it gives us goosebumps, it challenges us, shows us something new about ourselves…. It means something to us. When you listen to "Blue in Green" or "Flamenco Sketches" by Miles Davis, they give you that feeling of calm and love. Or when you hear Kanye West's "We Major," you immediately get pumped up and ready to attack your day. Or on November 1st, when you hear the first notes of Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That is the power of amazing art…. But what about the people that make the art? Do they have a stake in giving you those nice feelings? Should our feelings be transferred to them as the creators of the art we love? Yes… No… Maybe… Well, the only thing to be sure of is that it's definitely complicated. Fortunately, on today's show we'll be digging deep into these questions as we discuss the concept of Art vs. The Artist. And, with a topic this heavy we just had to bring on an expert guest to help us untangle everything. Special Guest: Tom Moon Tom Moon has been writing about pop, rock, jazz, blues, hip-hop and the music of the world since 1983. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller 1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die, and a contributor to other books including The Final Four of Everything. From 1988 until 2004 he served as music critic at the Philadelphia Inquirer and his work has appeared in Rolling Stone, GQ, Blender, Spin, Vibe, Harp and many other publications. Since 1996 he has contributed to NPR's All Things Considered and he's also won several awards, including two ASCAP-Deems Taylor Music Journalism awards. Beyond his bonafides as a music journalist he's also an accomplished saxophonist whose professional credits include several tours with the Maynard Ferguson orchestra and recently he launched EchoLocator which is a newsletter devoted to nearly vanished sounds, spirits, ideas and recordings. Tom's Links - https://echolocator.substack.com/ http://www.ensemblenovo.com/ Companion Art vs. Artist Spotify Playlistwww.rightfiction.com

Episode 136:  Dead or Alive "Blue Christmas 2000" (2000) and U2 "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" (1987) Another year is coming to a close, and with the end of the year comes the holiday season. And with the holiday season comes Christmas songs, of course! So once again, Brian and Sarah close out the year by  choosing a couple of songs to talk about, before they turn their full attention to holiday preparations and celebrations.  And although the titles of both songs may look familiar, only one of them is a cover version. The first selection is "Blue Christmas 2000" by Dead or Alive. It's been quite a while since Brian and Sarah have talked about this band, so they're both eager to have a discussion about more than just the selected song. In fact, they go all the way back to 1988 to discuss the album Nude for a bit--which gives Brian the opportunity to tell a story from his freshman year in college that never fails to amuse and delight Sarah. The hosts go on to discuss the band's success in Japan; yet another version of this song (that still isn't the one you're thinking of); a synth voice whose name Sarah says sounds like a TV show; and, almost unbelievably, a recently-released new Dead or Alive album. The second song chosen for this episode is U2's version of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." As this song was recorded and released in 1987, this selection ties in neatly (almost like a bow on top of a package!) with the four episodes released earlier this year, where Brian and Sarah, along with Tom Austin-Morgan of the podcast Banned Biographies (and now of the band Sham 69 as well!), discussed U2's iconic 1987 album The Joshua Tree.   "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" was recorded by U2 for inclusion on the charity album A Very Special Christmas, so Brian searched through his archives and found his notes from 2018, when he and Sarah discussed several other songs from that album. He reminds us about the history of the album, the charity it supports, and the success it has had both on the charts and as a fundraising vehicle. And, since this selection is actually a cover version, the hosts take some time to discuss the original version of the song and its interesting history of being in the public's awareness, which includes not only a discussion about Darlene Love, but also a late-night talk show host. Additionally, Brian shares some very recent--and rather exciting-- chart information for the song. After the two song discussions, Brian and Sarah decide to share their top 10 favorite Christmas songs recorded by artists they've talked about on the podcast. How many of their favorites are on your list as well? Rolling Stone calls it the greatest rock and roll Christmas song ever but it went largely unnoticed for a decade after coinciding with a tragedy. This is the story behind…Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Presented by Pizza Pizza! It was recorded in 1963 for the album A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector. The album gave Phil’s signature “wall of sound” treatment to well-known Christmas songs like Frosty the Snowman, Winter Wonderland and White Christmas. The one original song on the album was Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) with Darlene Love on lead vocal and Cher on the backing vocals. It was meant to be the album’s lead single, but it was released on November 22, 1963 – the same day US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The song never charted and the album was not the success Spector envisioned. But Spector thought he had something with Darlene Love’s incredible vocal performance, so after Christmas he brought Darlene back and they recorded a new version called Johnny, Please Come Home. Same music. Just different lyrics to tell a similar story without any reference to Christmas. That really didn’t work out either and the song virtually vanished for almost a decade. The album was re-released in 1972 on Apple Records – the label founded by The Beatles – and that’s what sent it on it’s path to becoming a Christmas classic. It peaked at #6 on Billboard’s album chart that year – while that’s it’s highest chart position to date, it re-entered the chart as recently as 2019, peaking at #12. Artists are often asked how they feel about singing songs year after year that have been out for so long. When Darlene Love sings live, you expect to hear her sing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – but she’s not tired of it. Possibly because she didn’t sing it live for the first 20 years it was out. As told in the Oscar-winning documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom, Darlene was a background singer back in the day and never had the chance to perform the song live. It wasn’t until the 80’s that she’d perform the song regularly. On his last show before Christmas, from 1986 – 2014, David Letterman would bring Darlene Love on his show to sing the song. During her final Letterman appearance, she finished the song standing on Paul Schaefer’s piano and did not come down when Dave came over to thank her. She reportedly stayed on top of the piano because she didn’t want to cry if Dave hugged her after that final performance. Darlene still sings the song live on TV every year – since Letterman wrapped up his nightly show, she now performs it annually on The View. Darlene was involved in the recording of another version of the song for the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas. U2 did a faithful cover of the original and asked Darlene to sing the backing vocal. Darlene Love, now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is the only singer to ever back up U2 and Elvis Presley. As an avowed atheist, some of you may wonder why I bother dropping the X-mas Dance mix every year. I grew up in the Catholic church and for all the drama, the piss poor education, the failed attempt to teach creationism alongside actual science for which I questioned everything and was punished by Sister Ursula repeatedly and the sexual abuse — you would think that I would shun the holiday season but I don't. I have a love hate relationship with Christmas in that I have great memories as a kid going to Corpus Christi , TX to visit with Momo and Boonpa, aunts, uncles, cousins and always enjoyed myself. My grandparents were non-practicing Baptists, alcoholics and basically hell raisers, which made them a lot of fun to be around. As I got older and after their deaths, the family pretty much splintered and the era of fun and family had come to an end. By this time, I was in college in north Texas, alone, afraid, HIV+ and wondered when it was my turn to die. That never happened nor was I ever even close. I was new to the whole gay scene and had become great friends with Kurt who also happened to be from South Texas. He was a smart, bitchy queen that could slice through bullshit the minute it walked through the door. Yes we were friends with benefits but that's about it. [youtube v="XiSPNaQNGOY"] I distinctly remember going to meet him for lunch during the season when he worked at Express in the mall and they were playing U2's rendition of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" over their speaker system in the store. There's a feeling of warmness I can't express that comes over me when I hear that song and think about our long lost friendship. In fact, Kurt was the last person I stayed with in Dallas before driving nine hours back home for good. It's funny how these small insignificant fleeting moments come rushing back but here I am spilling my guts out. I've been fortunate throughout my life to be in long term relationships with frankly, some really great guys including my partner Rick for 18 years. I'm not an easy person to get along with and am appreciative of his patience but even he has his limits and puts me in my place when I need to be taken down. I have fond holiday memories for Tommy, Eddie and Pete that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Nevertheless, mood swings during the season are fairly typical for many people and I'm no different. I fall back on the music and the memories that filled me with happiness and sadness during the holidays and try to spread the joy to anyone needing a boost. That being said — this will definitely be the last episode of this series. There's no sense in trying to top perfection. These songs vary widely from style to tempo which causes my traditional mixing style to be thrown out the door. This time, I can honestly say, "I nailed it." I don't know what this next year holds for me or Party Favorz. My goal is to give it one final year to release everything on my bucket list before hanging it up. Priorities can change but for now — my goal is to see this through. I want to wise everyone a very happy holiday season and hope you put this set to good use. It will brighten up even the most cloudy days while adding some positivity to your life. I'll be back next week as I begin to close out 2020. There's a lot to get done between now and then so until then...ENJOY! This set is dedicated to my long lost friend Kurt Baum. I hope love and happiness has found you wherever you are.  Album: X-mas Dance Mix 2020 Genre: Dance, House, Funky Year: 2020 Total Time: 03:28:08 1. Music fans in 2019 are gobsmacked that the No. 1 song in America is not only a Christmas song but a 25-year-old recording: Mariah Carey’s holiday perennial “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Even more amazingly, it’s the first Christmas song to top Billboard’s Hot 100 in 61 years, since “The Chipmunk Song” in December 1958. This leads to so many “whys”: Why were there no Christmas No. 1s for six decades? Why didn’t ’60s, ’70s and ’80s holiday classics like “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Feliz Navidad” and “Last Christmas” become Hot 100 hits? Why did Carey’s classic not chart in 1994, when it was released—and why did it only start charting in the 2010s and seem to get more popular every year this decade? In this special holiday edition of Hit Parade we answer all of these questions, and explain how virtually everything had to change about the music business for Mariah’s Christmas chestnut to reach No. 1: from Billboard chart rules, to digital music technologies, to even the tragic passing of a fellow music diva. It all combined to give Carey her incredible 19th No. 1 on the Hot 100—just one chart-topper away from the Beatles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

FYI, all past Christmas dance mixes are still available on the site by clicking here. I've been holding out for some new entries and only three came through. Out of those, only one was worth adding. I was so looking forward to Dirty Disco's release this year that when it dropped, I was disappointed if not severely heartbroken. I was hoping they'd do a remake of the Weather Girls classic "Dear Santa (Bring Me A Man This Christmas)" which is so up their alley. Unfortunately, they put out a lackluster dance mix of "Last Christmas" by Brenda Reed, which is not some of her best work, so I took a pass and brought back the Young Divas version of "Dear Santa" and a George Michael bootleg of "Last Christmas." I kept this year's entry tight and remastered several older mixes to bring them up to today's standards. While many of the tracks have been recycled from previous efforts, isn't that what Christmas music is all about? That is, hearing your favorite tunes year after year by your favorite artists and never getting sick of them. Throw in a few newbies or alternate versions and you got yourself a little holiday party rocking around the Christmas tree. I for one never get sick of hearing the Eagles take on "Please Come Home For Christmas", or the Pretenders' version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," or even U2's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." These are just a couple of my personal favorites. At the end of the day, many of the major artists who do release updated versions of holiday classics, typically don't invest in commissioning dance mixes for those tunes. The last major ones we've gotten were from Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, and Leona Lewis which are included here. Even then, that was several years ago. That's unfortunate because there really IS a yearning for these tracks to be remixed. That being said, I am NOT about to ruin your holiday season by not creating some holiday magic for my followers. Who am I to scrooge you out of the most wonderful time of the year? As many of you know, I am an atheist but even I don't allow that to get in the way of enjoying the music I grew up with, and in a genre that lifts my spirits. Joe thinks thinks so, and he's found a replacement film from jolly old England that will brighten up your secular Christmas spirit even more! *Intro/Outro music: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), by Darlene Love

Dave Grohl, who many lifetimes ago was in a band called Nirvana, stopped by Saturday Night Live with his new band the Foo Fighters, and he brought some Christmas cheer with him! After starting off with “Everlong,” from 1997’s The Colour and the Shape, the Foo Fighters turned in a rocking performance of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by Darlene Love (off Phil Spector’s 1963 Christmas album) and a guitar arrangement of the Vince Guaraldi classic, “Linus & Lucy,” which first appeared on A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965....

For Christmas Eve, I dive into the melodramatic and perverse world of Phil Spector, and his seminal Christmas pop record ‘A Christmas Gift For You', with my friend and sometimes producer Jaime Lewis and a large batch of eggnog. Why did the album bomb on first release? Which 60s pop legend considers it the greatest album of all time? How does Spector's sincere love of syrupy Christmas music track with his reprehensible real life behaviour? How does the album mash up innovative contemporary production with traditional holiday standards? What's the history of the album's lasting classic track, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)? What's the right amount of bourbon to put in eggnog? And isn't Phil Spector Jewish anyway? Listen in the player above or download the episode by clicking here. It's almost Christmas time so Becca Ruiz and Josh Wodarz decide to run over some of their favorite Christmas tunes. We cover it all, well, ok, not really. But there is a bit of ground, from the Darlene Love classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" to Becca's love of classic Christmas songs like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman." They also go over the history of "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Josh laments that the Keith Richards whacked-out cover of Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run" with Toots & the Maytalls isn't on Spotify, but hey, we found a link for you! Don't forget to go to csicon.fm/hw23 to get access to our Spotify playlist to have yourself a Merry Christmas and all that. Darlene also starred for three years on Broadway as ‘Motormouth Maybelle’ in the Tony Award winning musical HAIRSPRAY. Darlene Love was just a high school sophomore in Los Angeles when she was discovered out of a gospel choir, and asked to join a burgeoning girl group called The Blossoms, who began recording for Phil Specter. Soon thereafter, other artists like Sam Cooke were attracted to her powerful sound, and sought Darlene on their recordings. With The Blossoms and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, Darlene sang lead vocals on some of the greatest music hits of the 60's. The Blossoms landed a weekly spot on the landmark television series SHINDIG & Elvis's 1968 Comeback Special and through the 60's and 70's, Darlene continued to perform with and back-up such diverse artists as The Beach Boys, The Mamas & The Papas, Tom Jones, The Righteous Brothers and Sonny & Cher. She’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. Darlene Love has lent her voice to countless hit singles over the years, including “He’s a Rebel” by the Crystals, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” by the Righteous Brothers, and her own holiday classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”.She’s also had the opportunity to sing with many legends of music including Elvis,Sam Cooke, Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Cher, and even Cheech & Chong! Many others will remember her as Danny Glover’s wife in the Lethal Weapon movies. Darlene is currently gearing up for a run of “Fame the Musical” in Australia, where she stars as Miss Sherman, a no-nonsense teacher at the school for the arts. We’ll also discuss the new DVD release of “The T.A.M.I. Show”, which Darlene was a part of.You can find out more about Darlene, by going to her official site, www.darleneloveworld.comSinger Darlene Love has lent her voice to literally hundreds of recordings over the years. We’ve assembled a list of some of her “Greatest Hits”“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” – Darlene Love – One of Darlene’s greatest moments. A stone-cold holiday classic from Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift to You. You can close your eyes and feel the snow falling on you.“He’s a Rebel” – credited to the Crystals, but it’s actually Darlene on lead vocals. Her first #1 hit.“Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah – Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans – Darlene sings on this Disney classic turned inside-out. Extra points for Billy Strange’s guitar solo that sounds like it’s coming from another planet.“(Today I Met) The Boy I’m Gonna Marry” – Darlene Love – One of the few Spector tracks to actually sport Miss D’s name. Darlene reaches back to her days in the gospel choir for a gutty performance. Imagine her preaching to the congregation about her good news.“The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)” – Betty Everett – Darlene and the Blossoms do the question-asking, like “Is it in his eyes”? sharing the lead vocalis with Betty. The vocal ascending that they do when Betty sings “Kiss him / and squeeze him tight” will send shivers.“Poor Side of Town” – Johnny Rivers – Darlene & the Blossoms show off their gentler side as they echo Johnny’s verses with sweet sophistication.“The Right Time” – Bobby Darin – Darlene duets with Bobby on this under-appreciated cut from a lost Darin LP called Bobby Darin Sings Ray Charles“Brown-Eyed Woman” – Bill Medley – The deep-voiced half of the Righteous Brothers testifies his love for Darlene, while she and her sisters turn up the heat.“Basketball Jones – Cheech and Chong – Showing that she truly is one of the most versatile of vocalists, Darlene lends her talents to C&C’s parody of the Brighter Side of Darkness “Love Jones.”
