Swedish singer (born 1974)
POPULARITY
Nina Persson joins Melody A.M. for a conversation about her superb new work with the duo KITE as well as a look-back on her musical career, which spans three successful decades. Famous for being the super-charismatic lead of popular Swedish band, The Cardigans, Persson started her career with the group in Jönköping in the early 1990s. With massive international hits like “Carnival”, “Lovefool, “My Favourite Game” and “Erase / Rewind”, the band have managed to garner and maintain a significant global fanbase, whose loyalty has not waned despite the fact that the last Cardigans studio album came out in 2005.Over the years, Nina has consistently tested the tether of her creativity, complementing her Cardigans projects with solo releases, not to mention a second band she started in 2001, A Camp. Two years ago she joined James Yorkston and the Stockholm-based Second Hand Orchestra on a beautiful record called The Great White Sea Eagle, which marked something of a departure from her other releases, not merely on account of being an album recorded entirely as a live session. After years spent living in the United States, Nina's return to her homeland has deepened her connection with Sweden and, in our interview, she tells Melody A.M. about her favourite corner of the country. She also engages patiently and thoughtfully with a question she must get asked all the time: why can't we have another Cardigans studio record? Check out our Nina Persson playlist with a collection of highlights from her rich discography - you'll find it at melodyam.com/nina

This week on Transmissions: Conner Habib. He's the author of the Pen/Faulkner award longlisted horror novel, Hawk Mountain, and the host of the weekly podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib. Informed by his practice of Anthroposophy and Christian mysticism, AEWCH focuses on the esoteric and ventures into strange and unusual places, touching frequently on Habib's spiritual views while also exploring his views on sex work, his interest in art and literature, punk rock ethos, and his singular conversational style. This last September, Habib devoted a whole month to exploring the mystic possibilities of music with guests like Bonnie Prince Billy and Nina Persson of the Cardigans, and he's featured guests like Ian McKaye, Stephen Malkmus, and Ted Leo, so we pick up where that series left off and dive into the musical, occult, and conversational deep end. Next week on Transmissions? Penelope Sheeris—director of The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization series, Wayne's World, and host of Peter and the Acid King, a podcast dedicated to the mysterious life and death of Peter Ivers.

Songs discussed in this episode: It's A Wonderful Life - Frank Watkinson; A Miracle Of Sorts - Lincoln Barr; Heart Of Darkness - Sparklehorse; Game Of Pricks - Guided Of Voices; It's A Wonderful Life - Sparklehorse; Lovefool - The Cardigans; Gold Day, Piano Fire, Painbirds, Sea Of Teeth, Apple Bed, King Of Nails, Eyepennies, Dog Door, More Yellow Birds - Sparklehorse; Myrtle - Vic Chesnutt; Little Fat Baby, Devils New, Comfort Me, Babies On The Sun, Morning Hollow, Maxine - Sparklehorse; Beyond The Threshold - Lincoln Barr
I talk with my favorite live singer, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, about earworms, songs we sing at home, the power of singing, and more in the third episode in my series of eps on musicians talking about music.
It can be hard to be in a band, or really, in any kind of group where there's creative collaboration, and you're supposed to act like it's a democracy. Because what do you do with an idea that you love, if nobody else believes in it? That question is a big part of this episode with Local Natives. Local Natives is a band from Southern California. Their first album came out in 2009, but the three vocalists and songwriters in the band, Taylor Rice, Kelcey Ayer, and Ryan Hahn – they've been playing together since they were in high school. The lineup also includes Matthew Frazier on drums and Nik Ewing on bass. They've put out five albums, including their most recent, Time Will Wait For No One, which came out in July 2023. But for this episode, I talked to Taylor, Kelcey, and Ryan about an older song of theirs: “Dark Days,” which came out in 2016. It's their biggest song to date; it has over 100 million streams, and it's been certified gold. It's a duet with Swedish singer Nina Persson, from The Cardigans. In 2020, they put out a new version of the song, featuring Amelia Meath from the band Sylvan Esso. I talked to the guys here in the studio, and to Amelia Meath remotely. And together, they told me the seven-year story of how “Dark Days,” was first made and then eventually remade. For more, visit songexploder.net/local-natives.

The Fife based singer/songwriter James Yorkston and the Cardigans lead singer Nina Persson teamed up with the Swedish Second Hand Orchestra to make the gorgeous album “The Great White Sea Eagle”. On this atmospheric walk through Tentsmuir Forest on the Scottish coast just north of St Andrews, James explains why he comes to the forest to find calm and space. Nina recalls her hectic time as a pop star in the 1990s and they share insights into their inspiration and creative process. Then their voices blend beautifully as they sing under the shade of the trees. --- We rely entirely on support from our listeners to keep this show on the road. Nina Persson of the Cardigans is interviewed in this episode! Brian Kantor returns to talk about The Cardigans' 1996 album First Band On The Moon. Brian is friends and erstwhile bandmates with Nina, so they recorded a conversation about the album that we listen to on this episode. Jason and Brian talk about drum sounds, bass note choices, dark lyrics wrapped in happy-sounding songs, if "Happy Meal II" is actually a happy song, the differences between this album and other 90s alternative hit records, and much more. 曲目单: (01:28) Mac Demarco - Crescent City (04:48) Urbs - Mandarin Sparrow Song (11:01) Hazel Shang 竹子 - My Heart Skips a Beat (16:20) James Yorkston, Nina Persson & The Second Hand Orchestra - A Sweetness In You (19:28) Cantaro Ihara - I Love You (22:49) tyson & Coby Sey - Can't Be Unstuck (25:42) Smushie - Complete Annihilation! We're joined this week by James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Dump. For decades now, he's been a prolific source of engaged independent rock music—the kind we like here at Aquarium Drunkard. As past work like I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass proves, YLT are masters of a great sardonic album title, and on February 10th, the band continues that tradition with its 16th album, This Stupid World. When McNew and host Jason P. Woodbury connected, Yo La Tengo had recently finished its annual Hanukkah celebration, which is where we pick up our talk. But from there, the conversation roves into interesting places: McNew's dalliances with hip-hop, important Dump anniversaries—including the 25th anniversary of his Prince covers album. From Yoko Ono to Sun Ra to the Dave Matthews Band, plenty of surprises pop up in this conversation—just like the YLT discography. Thanks for checking out Transmissions. En av våra största musikexporter genom tiderna berättar om sorgliga avsked, cancerdiagnosen och om att upptäcka sin röst på nytt som mamma. I tidiga 20-årsåldern slog hon igenom.
