Nosferatu (1922), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) In episode 78, we started our ongoing Twice Told Tales segment, featuring the first two versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. In this episode, with the recent release of Robert Eggers long awaited version of Nosferatu, we're going back to the original, one of cinema's first true monsters, in F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, then following it up with Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre. As in our first Twice Told Tales episode, this isn't a comparison as to which one is better, but an opportunity to dig deep into each film, discussing why we think the impact it has made is still felt today, for both versions. We'll point out the differences, the similarities, as well as some other behind-the-scenes on the films and filmmakers as well.  There is a reason the original film, one that was supposed to be completely destroyed, still lives on, almost like the undead title character. There is a reason you'll see a photo from Nosferatu in almost every book on the horror film genre. And some might think for Herzog to dare make his own versoin of this iconic classic was utter nonsense. Until you see the film. Join us on a little journey back over a century into the past, to the very beginning of horror cinema, and an incredible new take on this tale. Films mentioned in this episode: The 400 Blows (1959), Bicycle Thieves (1948), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Breathless (1960), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Count Dracula (1970), Dracula (1931), Dracula (1979), Dracula Blows His Cool (1979), Friday the 13th (1980), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Great Silence (1968), Love at First Bite (1979), Horror of Dracula (1958), Nocturna (1979), Nosferatu (1922), Nosferatu (2024), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Salem's Lot (1979), Shadow of the Vampire (2000), Thirst (1979), Vampire (1979), Vampire in Venice (1988)

Update on our week:  Merry Christmas everyone.  As we return for this week, Andy starts us off.  Andy starts with conversation concerning rivalry week in College football.  During Michigan vs Ohio State and UNC vs NC games there were fights after flag plating.  Is this a growing problem?  Noel takes advantage of his 4K setup by watching Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.  After changing some settings it is worth the time as Noel gets it just right.  Noel also does some gaming and plays PS5 Astro Bot.  This is just like Astro's Playroom, but so much better.  Daniel goes on an Arkham movie universe marathon.  First up was 2022 The Batman.  Daniel had been holding off on watching this movie because of its length, but it was a great movie.  Second up was The Penguin TV Series.  This TV Series is a Sopranos, but with the Penguin as the mob boss making this a great TV show.  Last up was Joker Folie a Deux.  This is a controversial movie that may call a musical.  Although it is somewhat a musical, Daniel apricates how the movie continues Jokers mental illness depiction.   Article for the week: Netflix customers left livid as they face another paywall on restricted content   https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/netflix-customers-left-livid-face-33187645   Warning: May have Strong Language and Content.   ========== Thank you to everyone who enjoys what we do.  If you like what we do, please spread the word of our show. A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) are collectively known as “The Man with No Name” trilogy and are often thought of as one long movie about the hero's adventures, much like we think of the original three installments of Indiana Jones. Quentin Tarantino has called the third film the most well-directed film ever made, but Mike contends that For a Few Dollars More is superior to the other two. Join us for a conversation about this most dreamlike of Westerns that operates like a buddy-cop movie and reminds us the question posed by classicists, “Could Achilles beat Odysseus in a fight?” In other words, who would be more afraid of angering: Clint Eastwood or Lee Van Cleef? Welcome to the 3rd episode of our Trilogies series. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at the Toy Story trilogy (excluding 2019's Toy Story 4). On this episode, we are looking back at a influential trilogy of films. Three Spaghetti Westerns from Italy. Being die hard fans of Westerns, we just had to talk about these films. Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone certainly was a tremendous and influential filmmaker. A remarkable visual storyteller and who has influenced the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Alex Cox for example. This episode we will be looking at Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, which includes A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. These films made a star out of Clint Eastwood, whose The Man With No Name character has been a staple of the Western genre and cinema itself, and he was an actor most famous for the TV show Rawhide and B-Movies. We look at the impact the Dollars Trilogy and the Spaghetti Western genre as a whole has had on cinema and what makes these types of films so great and fun to watch. Plus we get to discuss the scores that Ennio Morricone composed for each of these films. We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we hope you enjoy this episode. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we mark Earth Week by discussing some of the news that happened on this planet. We will travel from Washington D.C. to Kiev where there's finally some good news in that war effort, but it's just too bad that there wasn't any good news when it comes to funding our regional transit system. Also, we will talk and act locally with one of our Guelph city councillors. This Thursday, April 25, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: For a Few Dollars More... At long last, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send much need financial aid to Ukraine. Now three years into their all-out war against Russia, the Ukrainians have been fighting with anything they can as they desperately await help from the States, aid that was mostly held up by Russia's new fair-haired girl, Marjorie Taylor Greene. With the bullets set to flow again, might 2024 be a breakthrough year for our Ukrainian allies? Slowpiercer. Last week, Premier Doug Ford announced expansion plans for several GO Train lines, but not everyone gets improved transit equally. While the Government of Ontario increased frequency on the Kitchener Line, those additional trains don't make it all the way to Kitchener, which is one of many gaps in a system that's desperately awaiting more service for users. Why is Ontario still so far behind on regional transit? The Shroud of Erin. Council is taking the week off, but it's been very, very busy lately on a variety of topics. One of those topics was a series of complaints about the mayor's social media posts, and out of that came a couple of motions about beefing up council's online policies. The author of those motions was Ward 1 Councillor Erin Caton, who will join us this week to talk about about the results, and they will also look ahead to new council business in May. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

A huge portion of the modern idea of what a western is can be traced back to an Italian director with an appreciation for samurai films, Sergio Leone. Today Alex and Jonathan look at his influence on the spaghetti western sub-genre with For a Few Dollars More (1965), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Duck, You Sucker! (1971). We discuss how Leone uses backstory and pacing to build tension, the specific tropes and identifiers of the spaghetti westerns, and the increasing scale of the themes that underlie the common elements. As we continue our journey through the history of the western genre, Alex and Jonathan take a detour to Japan to discuss an era of chanbara (samurai) films that bridge the gap from classic westerns to spaghetti westerns. We're talking about Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954), Sanjuro (1962), The Sword of Doom (1966). We discuss the parallels between chanbara and western films, the ways samurai have been mythologized in similar ways to old west gunslingers, and the construction and deconstruction of the ideals of that mythology. After making A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965), Sergio Leone outdid his European contemporaries who were churning out spaghetti Westerns with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).  After the trilogy was released across the Atlantic, Leone revitalized the Western, a genre that was born with The Great Train Robbery (1903) but was dwindling by the mid 1960's. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach starred as the film's three titular characters, and everyone involved eventually went on to prosperous characters, particularly Clint Eastwood and composer Ennio Morricone.  The movie is widely available on Blu Ray and DVD. Sergio Leone continued building on the mythos that he and Clint Eastwood had created in "A Fistful of Dollars" with the follow-up, "For a Few Dollars More," and it is in this film that Eastwood really developed so many of the tropes that he would continue using throughout his career. The squinting, silent gazes he'd give before gunning someone down. The one-liners. And for Eastwood's other westerns, a defined look. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our misnamed Man With No Name trilogy series and talk about Eastwood in his second film with Leone, 1965's "For a Few Dollars More.' We discuss the development that Leone shows from his first western to this one, as well as the development that Ennio Morricone shows in developing his brilliant score. We chat about Eastwood as well as the perfect western actor Lee Van Cleef, the ever manic Gian Maria Volonte and the ever frightening Klaus Kinski. We talk about the violence and rape in this film along with the use of marijuana and how it really seemed to break some filmmaking barriers for mainstream movies at the time. And we chat about the fantastic production design that really builds this western world that Eastwood, Van Cleef and Volonte inhabit along with their cast-mates, a world that can still be seen by visiting Mini-Hollywood in Almeria, Spain. It's a wildly fun film and one we have a wonderful time talking about. Tune in!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes!
