Free preview cross-over with the Bang-Bang Podcast. In this episode, Van and Lyle are joined by writer Max Read to dissect The Sum of All Fears, the 2002 film adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel. The film thrusts CIA analyst Jack Ryan, portrayed by Ben Affleck, into a high-stakes scenario where a nuclear bomb detonates in Baltimore, pushing the U.S. and Russia to the brink of war. The movie's release shortly after 9/11 adds a layer of poignancy to its themes of terrorism and national insecurity. The discussion delves into the portrayal of neo-Nazi antagonists manipulating global powers, a narrative choice that, while admirably distancing from the novel's Middle Eastern villains, also anticipates our terrifying present. The trio likewise examines the character of Russian President Nemerov, a Vladimir Putin stand-in who, putting aside his central role in anti-Chechen violence, comes off as way too sympathetic in 2025. The narrative's sanitized depiction of nuclear devastation, particularly the aftermath of the Baltimore explosion, earn well-deserved chuckles. Most of all, Max brings his media expertise on the “‘90s Dad Thriller” to the conversation, further offering stark relief to a current moment when such innocent and fun-loving thrills have been rendered quaint—perhaps even impossible.Further ReadingMax Read's Substack“‘90s Dad Thrillers: a List,” by Max ReadThe Spook Who Sat By The Door, by Sam Greenlee"Trump dreams of a Maga empire – but he's more likely to leave us a nuclear hellscape," by Alexander HurstThe Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner, by Daniel EllsbergCommand and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety, by Eric Schlossser“The Man Who Knew Too Much,” by Lyle Jeremy RubinThe Hunt for Tom Clancy Substack, by Matt Farwell
"FebruaRYAN" concludes with a look at 2014's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Twelve years after The Sum of All Fears failed to reignite the Jack Ryan franchise, Paramount tried once again to tell a new Ryan origin story, with a new "hot young star of the moment" leading man in the role. But this particular Ryan movie arrived in a post-MCU world, when the importance of "IP" had become even more evident, and the concept of - say it with us - "cinematic universes" had become all the rage. How did that affect the approach to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit? And why did the movie ultimately suffer essentially the same fate as its predecessor? We discuss all this, and more, as we wrap up our look at failed reboots of Tom Clancy's beloved CIA analyst. Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd
It's out with January, and in with "FebruaRYAN." That's right, this month we're taking a look at Tom Clancy's beloved CIA analyst turned reluctant hero, Jack Ryan. After the successes of The Hunt for Red October, with Alec Baldwin as Ryan, and Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, which saw Harrison Ford take over the role, Paramount Pictures were sure they had a long-running, bulletproof spy-thriller franchise on their hands. And yet, two subsequent attempts to reboot the series were both dead-ends. In this episode, we're looking at the first attempt to relaunch the series with a new origin for the Jack Ryan character, and a new, younger leading man in the role - 2002's The Sum of All Fears, starring Ben Affleck as Ryan. Arriving just months after the tragedy of 9/11, this movie seemed advantageously primed to capitalize on the news of the day in order to muster extra attention. But was the film's story a little too close to recent events for the audience's comfort? And was Ben Affleck's recently changing fortunes as a leading man more of a distraction than a benefit? First, tariffs on energy products are pure propaganda. Coal, LNG and crude oil are fungible. In the case of China the energy products arrive from a global market, there is no identifiable way to tariff American energy products. This is not like Canada where the Candian energy products are entirely dependent on pipelines into the USA, and therefore unavoidably easy to tariff by Trump. Chairman Xi gets most of the Chinese imported energy resources from Russia, specifically Coal, LNG and Crude Oil. So, this subset of tariffs against American energy products is pure propaganda,

California Interagency Council on Homelessness (ICH) is responsible for coordinating and evaluating the efforts of California's state agency in reducing homelessness. ICH, however, “has not consistently tracked and evaluated” the state's efforts to prevent and end homelessness and, as a result, California “lacks current information on the ongoing costs and outcomes of its homelessness programs,” according to a report from the California State Auditor. The homeless population in California has grown from 118,552 in 2013 to 181,399 in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. California has allocated almost $24 billion to homelessness and housing services over the past five fiscal years, according to the California Legislative Analyst's Office. ICH has not tracked this funding, according to the auditor's report. State funding for homelessness programs either goes to counties, cities or third parties who then provide services for the homeless on its behalf, the report explains. Sometimes cities and counties will themselves pass off state funding to third parties to run homelessness programs, and those third parties sometimes pass off the funding to subcontractors. The report found the ICH had “not established a consistent method” for examining the effectiveness of programs funded through these arrangements. Episode 34 - Hype: Sneakers (1992)There are so many great movies that came from the 90's, but “Sneakers” is one that not only stands out but is one that I either return from time to watch again and again or stop and watch some (or all of) whenever I find it playing anywhere. While I can appreciate dark, twisted espionage thrillers, 'Sneakers' takes a different path. It steers away from what we have more recently been accustomed to with the usual gritty tones for a blend of light-hearted mischief, humor, and suspense, making it a uniquely enjoyable experience.. You have a one of a kind cast with Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, Donal Logue, Stephen Tobolowsky, Timothy Busfield and more. It kind of (I am reaching here a little bit) feels like the precursor to the Ocean's 11 reboot with its group of goofy characters facing real threats. This movie is written by the team behind “WarGames” and is directed by the always entertaining Phil Alden Robinson (“Field of Dreams”, “The Sum of All Fears”, and the series “The Good Fight”). The movie's crown jewel, however, is its music. Composer James Horner, known for 'Avatar', 'Braveheart', and 'Titanic', delivers one of my all-time favorite scores. Everyone behind and in front of the camera brings their A-game to this movie. Yes at times its a little cheesy and feels a little dated, but none of that gets in the way of this movie being pure fun. The only frustration I have with this movie is its bad title. As you will hear in this episode, there were other great title options that were included in the movie! Other than that one (but important) frustration this early 90's hit is one that if you have not seen it that I highly recommend you check out. “Sneakers” is available to rent and or purchase on all platforms. Enjoy the movie and thanks for listening. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit sohrabsmovieq.substack.com

Executive Orders state that you must listen to Filmshake's new episode on 1994's Clear and Present Danger. You must fulfill your debt of honor and listen to Jordan Courtney and Nicholas Loup discuss this Harrison Ford action flick that Nic loves with the net force of a thousand Red Octobers. Listen without remorse as they briefly discuss how 2002's The Sum of All Fears is not as good as Clear and Present Danger, then face off in a brutal trivia battle where either could end up dead or alive, as they fight with the fury of a bear and a dragon in their violent patriot games. Will there be six rainbows in the sky after their vicious battle to prove who is the real cardinal of the kremlin? Is this episode description making Tom Clancy roll over in his bed, or is his ghost recon just happy we didn't try to shoehorn Armored Cav: A Guided Tour of an Armored Cavalry Regiment into it?Listen to Filmshake!Music Heard this Episode:"Main Title/A Clear and Present Danger (Film Version)" -- James Horner"The Ambush (Film Version)" -- James Horner"Second Hand Copter" -- James Horner"The Mission/If We Could Remember" -- Jerry Goldsmith"Truth Needs a Soldier/End Title" -- James HornerSupport the show
