Show Notes: Opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in research can be profoundly impactful for learning and mentorship experiences, while also providing opportunities for institutions to further scholarship and research in various fields (Adebisi, 2022; Blanton, 2008; Knight et al, 2021). While there are several ways for students to get involved in undergraduate research at Georgetown, many students are not aware of the opportunities; or if they are, they may not know how to get involved. A recent study described undergraduate research as “a treasure trove that has yet to be fully tapped” (Adebisi, 2022).  In this episode of What We're Learning About Learning, we spoke with Lauren Tuckley, Director for Georgetown's Center for Research and Fellowships, who describes research experience as an undergraduate student “part of the hidden curriculum.” Faculty and students being aware of the research opportunities available at Georgetown can make this hidden curriculum more visible. We also spoke with Georgetown undergraduate students Zachariah John, Sarah Watson, and Dominic Pham who each share their takeaways from working in research positions.  Bios: Lauren Tuckley, the director of the Center for Research and Fellowships Zachariah John, a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service studying science technology and international affairs Dominic Pham,  a senior double majoring in biochemistry and comparative literature Sarah Watson, a senior in the School of Foreign Service studying regional and comparative studies Georgetown Resources: Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (GUROP) Center for Research and Fellowships at Georgetown Undergraduate Research Resources at Georgetown Georgetown's Mission and Information about Cura Personalis Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) The Prospect blog Research: Adebisi, Yusuff Adebayo. “Undergraduate Students' Involvement in Research: Values, Benefits, Barriers and Recommendations.” Annals of Medicine and Surgery, vol. 81, 2022, pp. 104384–104384,  Belanger, A. “Taking a life is acceptable as long as it's excusable, right?” After 6 months on the run, Miguel returns to Oz and quickly becomes a target of Chico, who tries to enlist the help of Omar, whose back from in Em City after a short stay in Solitary. Gloria returns to work following her sabbatical. During a late-night conversation with Ryan, Gloria confronts him about the Shamrock she received with the letter. Ryan's confession stirs up some conflicting feelings in Gloria as she confides in Pete. As Said continues to come to terms with his actions, Leroy seeks his acceptance in converting to Islam. Having been rebuffed and following an altercation in the cafeteria between The Muslims and The Aryans, Leroy goes to Schillinger with an offer to have Said killed. Despite the offer, Schillinger refuses the alliance. Furthermore, the arrival of Reverend Jerimiah Cloutier to Oz could provide some much needed influence, illustrated by a powerful display converting Jim Burns in the cafeteria/chapel. Having been in a state of disarray following Adebisi's death, Poet is replaced as leader of The Homeboys by new arrival Burr Redding. Sensing the possible increase in the group's power, Morales and Chucky attempt to strike a deal with Burr. A Freight Boat from China runs aground off the (not real) Jeb Island Sound. As 18 male refugees arrive at Oz, accommodations have to be made, leading to the inmates in Em City being placed in lockdown for the time being. With tensions raised, the refugees struggle to acclimatise to their new surroundings, but Morales attempts to befriend the defacto leader of the group to makes things easier. Following their disagreement after Burr's arrival, Morales murders one of the refugees, framing Burr in the process using his military past against him. Also on this episode: Miguel's possible route from Oz to Tierra del Fuego, Leo fires Busmalis from his Assistant job leading to the hiring of a bubbly new Staff Member, a brief history of Peyote, Rev Cloutier insists that the money “was just resting in my account”, the unfortunate side of playing Schillinger for JK Simmons, Peter James Kelsch's questionable biography and where is Beecher meeting with his brother? “We sing in the Choir together” Six months have passed and as Em City begins to return to normal following the death of Adebisi, a News crew are granted permission to film a documentary series for the local station detailing life at Oz. Originally proposed as A Day In The Life of a New Inmate, starring the incoming Omar White on his first day in prison, the team's producer Lisa Logan soon discovers an alleged cover-up of Adebisi's death. As Lisa digs deeper, Leo and McManus must act fast to avoid the truth being discovered. Furthermore Jack Eldridge, a hard-hitting Investigative Journalist, is set to spend the night inside one of Em City's trademark Pods. Having had a run-in with the O'Reily brothers several years earlier, Ryan seeks revenge and befriends Omar in an attempt to get to Jack, but Omar proves to be too hot-headed, attempting to murder Jack following a misunderstanding. With Ryan's plan having backfired, Jack chooses his Pod-mate for the night, selecting Cyril due to his mental capacity. After implicating him into the kidnapping of Beecher's children, Keller gives Eli time to get his affairs in order to before killing him. His conscience soon gets the better of him though, but is he too late? As Rebadow returns to Em City following the attempted murder, he seeks forgiveness from Busmalis. “My Church is against a lot of things I'm not” As Querns continues to transfer White inmates out of Em City, increasing Adebisi's position of power, Said pleads with Arif to prove himself worthy of his leadership position as The Muslims continue to fall apart. Perhaps striking a deal with Adebisi to take out Supreme is the answering that Arif is looking for. McManus and Murphy put their differences aside as McManus looks for a resolution to the unrest amongst the Staff in Em City, proposing that Murphy and others come and work with McManus in Unit B. As Nat's condition worsens ahead of their execution, Pete goes to Leo seeking to have the date brought forward. The walls are closing in on Mobay as a Homicide Detective arrives to investigate Bruno's death as well as breaking character when speaking with Augustus. Furthermore, he's also been charged with bringing in new customers to the Drug Trade. Seemingly with no place let to turn, Mobay makes a confession to Sister Pete. Beecher finally receives some good news, but doing so means that he must now face Keller, who has been proven innocent with regards to the kidnapping. Tensions run high as Keller moves pods and Mondo moves in with Beecher. As The FBI's investigations continue, Keller seeks absolution from Ray, but Ray refuses and tries to convince Keller to do the right thing and confess his crimes to the police. Nikolai remains in Protective Custody as Querns inquires as to why he and Jaz were trying to kill each other. Seeking a way out of Protective Custody and for his enemy to removed, Nikolai tells Querns about the cell phone and that it's currently in Ryan's possession, leading to a shakedown in Em City. A visit from Nikolai's girlfriend (who may or may not have just been a Russian Stripper found near the set) could give Nikolai the upper hand. In addition to his problems with Nikolai, Ryan is convinced that Gloria has forced Cyril to suffer an overdose of his medication as revenge for hiring Keenan to rape her. A meeting with Keenan in the gym gives Ryan the opportunity to set things straight. “See what kills me first, the State or the Disease. I guess the Disease is winning” Bruno Gergen is a dirty cop who's been sent to Oz, but will his presence blow Mobay's cover? A trip to the Freight Elevator could be the answer to all of his problems. The press are threatening to run the story of Leo's brother being a convicted murderer, leading to Leo taking the offensive. Querns implements a new regime in Em City which includes the naming of a Panel of Trustees in place of the old Em City Council, as well as transferring out a number of White inmates, leading to a war of words with Murphy. Said and The Muslims struggle under the new regime, with the arrival of Kevin Ketchum, aka Supreme Allah only making matters worse. McManus receives a phone call from an old flame and continues to struggle with his new role at Oz as he continues to push his friends away. Ryan comes face to face with Gloria's rapist when Patrick Keenan arrives in Oz while Cyril gets into a fight with some of the Em City newbies, causing a rift between Ryan and Adebisi. Nikolai and Ryan continue to feud over the use of the Cell Phone. With Querns also naming him as the Prime Suspect for the murder of Ralph, Nikolai tries to convince Jaz to kill Ryan, but Ryan has manages to get into Jaz's ear. Beecher receives (yet more) bad news as Schilinger puts the next phase of his plan into action. Eli has some info for Beecher regarding the kidnapping of his children, info which leads Beecher to someone near and dear to him, as Taylor questions Keller regarding the murders of the homosexual men, and in the process answers the long running question regarding which state Oz is in. Also on this episode: is a $500 Whore expensive?, Mary Glynn finally makes an appearance, Guest Director Brian Cox and Jonathan Demme use their time on the show to play an in-joke on each other, the show addresses it's own plotholes, a mystery inmate is wearing Robson's shirt for some reason, and how can Jaz be in two places at once? “Such a sweet old fella, who's going to doubt your word?” With Busmalis and Miguel having escaped Oz, Leo faces questions from the press as well as pressure from Devlin to find the two men. El Cid and Adebisi clash about El Cid knowing about the gun, threatening the Em City Drug Trade Partnership. Leo calls Clayton into Oz to talk, but a new arrival could be the answer to Adebisi's problem, as well as help from the most unlikely of places. Adebisi attempts to recruit Said into his ranks to use his influence in order to get a Black man in charge of Em City, while Mobay in forced into a tough situation in order to prove himself to the Drug Partners. Said's continued involvement with Jason causes friction with his fellow Muslims as Jason's Hearing occurs, while Shirley meets with her ex-Husband asking to be buried with their daughter following her execution. This being Shirley of course means that there are mind games to be played. Ahead of his and Cyril's session with the Nathans and despite sharing their Calling Minutes, Ryan and Nikolai clash over the use of the cell phone as a game of Cat & Mouse ensues. Keller returns to Oz following the Em City shooting, but neither Ray or Pete are buying Keller's new enlightened outlook. Beecher's happiness at Keller's return is short lived after receiving horrifying news regarding his children. Also on this episode: I give Yugoslavian and Slovenian pronunciation a bash, Bob Rebadow: Latino Idol?, Clarke Peters' journey to becoming Det. Lester Freamon and what do you think is on Chris Meloni's Walkman?
