Instead of a story of failure, today's episode is a story of grief. It is a literal story, a work of fiction, based on an actual event.I'm in conversation with English professor Andrea West because when I was asking anyone who came within earshot of me about whether there was a place for loss and grief in higher education, she said something unusual. She said, well, I think there's a story we could ask about that.Andrea and I talk about a very short story by the Indian American novelist Bharahti Mukherjee called, The Management of Grief. begins in the aftermath of the bombing of Air India Flight 182 in 1985. The flight was traveling from Montreal to Delhi and Bombay by way of London. It exploded off of the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people on board. This podcast will not go into the further details of the incident but there are some resources on the web page that you can explore if you'd like to know more. This story is many things but relevant to our concerns, it asks questions that we ask at the college: if we have official processes to follow, what happens when a person's emotions and life circumstances don't fit inside of what we expect? This episode was tricky to make and perhaps it fails to convey what we hoped. Your host meditates on the constant risk of failure and the worth of completing a project even if it is an imperfect thing.

Max talks about two critical factors, sleep inertia and false glide slopes, which played significant roles in an Air India Express accident. Despite being unrelated phenomena, they converged to contribute to the crash of Flight 812 in 2010. Air India Express, a low-cost airline operating in India, experienced its first fatal crash during this flight. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was returning from Dubai to Mangalore, India. However, the cockpit voice recorder revealed that the captain had been asleep for a significant portion of the flight, awakening only shortly before the crash. Compounded by issues such as inadequate descent planning and reliance on visual cues due to radar unavailability, the crew found themselves on an unstabilized approach, ignoring multiple warnings and calls for a go-around from the first officer. The aircraft ultimately overshot the runway. If you're getting value from this show, please support the show via PayPal, Venmo, the Cash app, Zelle or Patreon. Today's podcast:  The cost issue surrounding the continued pursuit of Paul Bernardo's presence and movement within the Canadian prison system - Meanwhile the Parole Board of Canada refused to disclose whether it had the composite transcript of the Bernardo videotapes based on Bernardo's privacy rights (upheld by a court decision as the Government of Canada fought to maintain Bernardo's privacy rights) until 5pm the day before the hearing. This proved to be "hell" for the French and Mahaffy families, according to the families lawyer Tim Danson. - Meanwhile the federal government wanted the families to pay over $19,000 in court costs for the government lawyers. Justice Glennys McVeigh sided with the government and ordered the families to pay $4,000 in costs. - The government would walk back the cost order and the battle continues....because Paul Bernardo "has his privacy rights."   Meanwhile a private citizen started a Go Fund Me page to raise money for the French and Mahaffy families to pay the legal bills from Tim Danson incurred over the years he has represented them. Danson spoke with me about this and assured his work for the families always has been and always will be pro bono. This is episode 25 – and I'm going to take a closer look at the Pakistan international Airlines Crash in Katmandu in 1992 along with a Thai Airlines accident there a few week earlier. The Pakistan crash comes via a suggestion by a listener called Herman. Thanks for the chat the other evening and also a big thank you for your great suggestion Herman. But before then we'll probe two other accidents in the Alps involving Air India planes – and they're full of mystery and surprises – and a box full of gemstones. It's unique that two aircraft from the same airline hit the same place – particularly in a completely different continent to their place of origin but that is what happened to Air India 101 a Boeing 707-437 nicknamed Kanchenjunga registration VT-DMN which hit the 15700 foot high Mont Blanc in 1966. The other was Air India Flight 245 which crashed roughly in the same place but years before in 1950. Then the Pakistan International Airlines Flight 268 - an Airbus A300, registration AP-BCP, which crashed while approaching Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport on 28 September 1992. The final accident in this end of year bumper edition was the Thai Airways International Flight 311 which crashed north of Kathmandu and to be quite blunt this one was categorically one of pilot error.

On June 23, 1985, an Air India Boeing 747 blew up over Irish airspace killing all 329 passengers and crew onboard. On the flight were 268 Canadian citizens. It was Canada’s largest mass murder incident ever. A Sikh militant group named Babbar Khalsa was eventually determined to have planted the explosive that brought the plane down. The formal investigation took more than 20 years and was the most expensive in Canadian history, concluding that a cascading series of errors was responsible for the terrorist attack. The investigation held the Canadian government, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Security Intelligence Service responsible for lapses in security and prevention. But the original cause may have gone back to the British partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
