When it comes to Spanish composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the three most important names are certainly Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, and Manuel de Falla – all composers who brilliantly integrated Spanish folk influences into the Western classical tradition.

Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) composed Aragón (Fantasia) in 1886 as one of a series of piano solo pieces depicting the musical styles of the Spanish provinces. It is based on a popular traditional dance called the Jota. This version of Aragón was adapted for oboe and piano by David Walter. Alberto Guidobaldi (1967- ) is a professor at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico in San Juan. He composed this Sonatina for Oboe and Piano in 2004. Today I’m speaking with the inspiring and very talented guitarist, Jiji.Applauded by the Calgary Herald as “…talented, sensitive…brilliant,” JIJI is an adventurous artist on both classical and electric guitar, playing a wide range of music from traditional and contemporary classical to free improvisation. Her impeccable musicianship combined with compelling stage presence and fascinating repertoire earned her First Prize at the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.JIJI’s performances have been featured on PBS (On Stage at Curtis series), NPR’s From the Top, WHYY-TV and Hong Kong broadcast station RTHK’s The Works, among others. Her EP recording, Underglow, was released in May 2018, featuring music by Bach, Albeniz, Ginastera and Dyens, in addition to her own composition for electric guitar and electronics.A passionate advocate of new music, JIJI has premiered a duo piece Talking Guitars by renowned composer, Paul Lansky, and recently commissioned Nina C. As the 50th anniversary of the moon landings approaches, James Burke talks to Michael Berkeley about the music that brings back memories of the heady days when, new to science broadcasting, he was chosen by the BBC to lead the coverage of the Apollo Missions and the moment the first human stepped onto the Moon. James Burke has the rare gift of making complex ideas comprehensible to a wide audience – and providing a great deal of entertainment along the way. He began his BBC career on Tomorrow’s World, and his series Connections, which offered a new perspective on the history of science and technology, was a television landmark. James is the author of more than a dozen books, and his series about his long-running project The Knowledge Web was broadcast recently on Radio 4. The surprising thing about James Burke is that he studied Middle English at university and got into science broadcasting quite by accident while working in Italy. He tells Michael how it happened and plays a Neapolitan song which reminds him of the years he spent there as a young man. He chooses music that reminds him of his musical childhood – Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet which he played at school, and a piece by Handel which he sang. His lifelong love of playing the guitar is reflected in music by Albeniz, and James makes some truly startling predictions about how technology is about to utterly transform our lives. In 1892, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's trip to the New World, a wealthy New Yorker invited Antonin Dvorak to visit America. Tchaikovsky, Albeniz, and Delius were among the other European composers who visited this country before the days of air travel.
Works for solo piano by Falla and Albeniz performed by Alessio Bax, piano on May 17, 2015. Work for string quartet and guitar by Boccherini performed by Jason Vieaux, guitar with Escher String Quartet: Adam Barnett-Hart, violin, Aaron Boyd, violin, Pierre Lapointe, viola, and Dane Johansen cello on May 17, 2015. Falla: Danza del molinera from El sombrero de tres picos for Piano Albeniz: Tango from Espana: Seis Hojas de Album for Piano, Op. 165 (arr. Godowsky) Boccherini: Quintet No. 4 in D Major for Guitar, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, G. 448 It’s time to get out of your chair: this podcast is all about la danza, the dance. The inspiration came from the final piece on the podcast: Boccherini’s Quintet for guitar and string quartet, G. 448, subtitled “Fandango.” The first two movements of the piece are relatively unassuming: a delicate Pastoral, followed by an Allegro that foregrounds the guitar a bit more. But in the final movements, the pace accelerates, the music gets livelier. To get us in the mood to tango, we’ve got a few openers, both featuring pianist Alessio Bax. First, the Dance of the Miller, by Manuel de Falla. After an attention-grabbing introduction, we get a spirited dance, which is no surprise, since the piece is actually a reworking of a ballet that Falla originally wrote for the great Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes. Next is Tango, from the six-movement collection Espana by Isaac Albeniz. Tango is the second piece in the original grouping, and Albeniz’s most famous melody. It’s been reworked for many instruments over the years. It is a charming, slightly seductive tune, immediate in its appeal. We conclude with the Boccherini quintet.
A live performance from pianist Jared Pierce, who performs Gershwin, Albeniz, Debussy, Sibelius, Jianzhong, a Villa-Lobos.

Hear Italian virtuoso Aniello Desiderio play stunningly original interpretations of Albeñiz, Scarlatti, Carulli, Vivaldi, and even Paco de Lucía. Desiderio discusses the importance of finding one's own voice as a performer, especially with regard to imagination, emotion, and sincerity. He passes on some valuable wisdom gained from his conversations with Leo Brouwer and cellist Mischa Maisky, he creates a distinction between playing concerts and playing in competitions, and he also expresses his admiration for the recently departed luminary of the guitar world, Paco de Lucía. Finally, Aniello gives us a lesson in authentic Italian cooking with his recipe for Spaghetti alle Vongole (Spaghetti with clams).
In this podcast, Jonathan Palevsky of WBJC interviews Manuel Barrueco about his new CD, "MEDEA" which includes solo Spanish guitar music by Albeniz and Granados, and Medea for guitar and orchestra by Manolo Sanlucar, recorded with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and Victor Pablo Perez conducting.
Behold the many sides of Benjamin Verdery. Seated in the WQXR Café with his baritone guitar in hand, Verdery lets introspective pieces by Bach and Randy Newman spill forth with a hushed introspection. But speaking behind a microphone, Verdery becomes garrulous and animated, expounding on squeaky strings, the music of Elvis Presley and teaching in the age of YouTube. Verdery is nothing if not steeped in the world of classical guitar: he travels the globe appearing at specialized guitar festivals, delivering week-long master classes from Maui to Amsterdam, and overseeing the guitar department at Yale University, a post he has held since 1985. His website contains the requisite sections devote to instruments, gear and teaching tips. Verdery has a populist streak too. As artistic director of the guitar series at the 92nd St Y, he curates a series of guitar recitals and performs there himself, as he will on Thursday in a solo concert of works by Albeniz, Bach and Ezra Landerman as well as arrangements of songs by Prince and Presley. Adapting pop songs for the classical guitar, Verdery says, isn’t as straightforward as it may seem. He says that an arrangement like “Kiss” by Prince (listen above), is conceived as a kind of collage. “I generally gravitate towards something that sounds really exciting and cool on the classical guitar,” he told host Jeff Spurgeon. “With the Prince, who doesn’t want to do that?” Verdery will transcribe bits of the tune, then adapt the bass line or the drum part into a thicker accompaniment parts. “There I have to do some composing because I’m not singing. It’s so joyful.” Verdery ends his Café Concert with "In Germany Before The War," a 1977 song by Randy Newman inspired by the Fritz Lang film M, which featured Peter Lorre as serial killer Hans Beckert. Newman has said the brooding song was intended as a metaphor for a nation about to enter a period of horror and transgression. It’s finding unlikely songs like this or working with younger composers that seems to keep Verdery going. "The astounding thing is the instrument still fascinates me,” he said. “As you get older pieces seem to grow with you, especially the great ones. “[Pianist] Dinu Lipatti said, ‘You don’t pick pieces, pieces pick you. As you go through life, even the simplest pieces can mean so much. You’re always humbled – by both the instrument because it still sounds fresh and unusual – and by the music.” Video: Amy Pearl; Sound: Edward Haber; Interview: Jeff Spurgeon; Text & Production: Brian Wise
Let me introduce you to musicologist and classical guitarist Dr. Walter Aaron Clark. Dr. Clark is the founder and director of the Center for Iberian and Latin American Music at the University of California, Riverside, where he is currently on the faculty. Additionally Walter is an accomplished guitarist, holding bachelors and master's degrees in classical guitar, his M.A. earned studying with Pepe Romero. He's written numerous books and articles on all our favorites, most recently Tórroba and Albeñiz. For those of you out there that want music, and probably guitar, to be part of your primary career path, but are looking into alternatives to being a touring concert artist or teacher music history might be the way to go. Walter is a great example of this career choice, as he has been able to maintain his connection to the guitar world by writing about many classical guitarists' most beloved composers. On the show today Dr. Clark will discuss the life of a guitarist-musicologists, we will hear some interesting history about Albeñiz's piece, which is incorrectly titled Asturias (Leyenda), and for those of you who love Spanish music but a little tired of the same old repertoire, Walter gives us some suggestions for new transcriptions and arrangements in the substantial repertoire of Spanish light opera, Zarzuela.

Upcoming events: November 27 - Barber Concerto with the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro, November 28 and 29 - Barber Concerto with the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira and Maestro Roberto Minczuk in Sao Paolo, December 2 - unaccompanied recital for Bargemusic in Brooklyn, New York: Bach D Minor Partita, Ysaye Sonata No. 4, works dedicated to Ms. Pine by Augusta Read Thomas, Jose Serebrier, Luis Jorge Gonzalez, Fred Onovwerosuoke, Yale Strom, Philip Pan, and Edgar Gabriel, Ballada Espagnola arr. Jesus Florido, Asturias by Albeniz arr. Rachel Barton Pine Inquiries from my Inbox: Penelope asks, "How many concerts a year do you play? Just wondering..." Random Musical Thought: Teaching artist Eric Booth writes: "Entertainment happens within what you already know. Underneath its many features that inspire, delight, frighten, sadden us, it confirms our sense of the way the world is. That's the whole point of entertainment- to stimulate and affirm- and it's often done brilliantly. The artistic experience had better not be opposed to this, or we are in big trouble. Art also stimulates and affirms, but it happens outside of what we already know; art enlarges our sense of the works- it expands our sense of the possible." "Live from the Mayne Stage," a concert on WFMT radio from October 3, 2010. Rush by Augusta Read Thomas, Aires de Tango by Jose Serebrier, Epitalamio tanguero by Luis Jorge Gonzalez, Six and a Half Variations by Fred Onovwerosuoke, Vaynshl No. 1 by Yale Strom, Thrash by Philip Pan, Theme and Variations by Edgar Gabriel (world premiere!), Ballada Espagnola arranged by Jesus Florido, Asturias by Isaac Albeniz arranged by Rachel Barton Pine. total playing time: 01:12:16SUBSCRIBE TO THIS PODCAST ON I-TUNES! This is my first recording of a work by Isaac Albeniz. Albeniz was a Spanish composer born in 1860 who studied with several famous musicians, including the Great Franz Liszt. This work is from a larger Suite (Suite Espanola - Spanish Suite) which was composed in 1886. I hope you enjoy my recording of Albeniz's Granada.
