In this episode of Daily Influence, host Gregg-Brooke Koleno is joined by Dr. Angela Brooks — an educator, leadership coach, and well-being advocate who has dedicated her life's work to helping leaders and organizations thrive from the inside out. Dr. Angela shares her inspiring journey from a naturally empathetic child to an award-winning principal and transformational leader. She unpacks how social and emotional well-being is at the core of authentic, effective leadership and how investing in our own emotional health can create a ripple effect of positive influence in the lives of others. Through powerful stories, including the remarkable transformation of one of her teachers who became Principal of the Year, Dr. Angela demonstrates how personal growth and professional leadership go hand in hand. She also reveals how small, intentional "micro moments" — from chewing bubble gum to sharing ice cream with family — can build resilience, joy, and connection in our fast-paced, often overwhelming world. Listeners will walk away with actionable strategies to: • Prioritize their well-being without adding more to their to-do list. • Embrace vulnerability and authenticity in leadership. • Intentionally create space and grace in their daily routines. • Discover the power of joyful, mindful living as a catalyst for influence. Dr. Angela reminds us that leading others starts with leading ourselves — and that our most profound influence begins in the quiet, intentional moments we create each day.

Ep 492 - The Fountain of Youth Guest - Angela Brooks-Wilson   By Stuart McNish   Researchers at Simon Fraser University and BC Cancer have pinpointed specific physiological traits that they say “can help people live longer, healthier lives.” According to a recent study published in GeroScience, the healthiest, older adults live in a “sweet spot,” where more than 100 different physiological traits interact, and that dynamic interaction makes them healthier than their counterparts.   Key to living in the “sweet spot” is homeostasis, which is a collection of mechanisms that your body uses to maintain constancy in blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and body temperature. The more consistent your body is, the healthier you are. Deviations from optimal ranges of vitamin D, calcium, glucose and other mechanisms lead to a higher risk of mortality.   We invited Angela Brooks-Wilson, a co-author of the report, to join us for a Conversation That Matters about what we now know about the “sweet spot” of health and how this knowledge may equip you to live longer and healthier.   You can see the interview here https://www.conversationsthatmatter.ca/   Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca

Larry Scarpa, co-principal, has garnered international acclaim for the creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways.Angie and Larry share insights into their work on the 2022 AIA Gold Medal winning project, The SIX, an affordable housing project in Los Angeles California. The 52-unit building provides a home, support services and rehabilitation for previously homeless and/or disabled veterans. You can see the project here as you listen along.Offering shelter and comfort, The SIX breaks the prescriptive mold of the traditional shelter by creating public and private "zones" in which private space is deemphasized, in favor of large public areas. Surrounded by four levels of housing units with balconies wrapped with a wood screen made from recycled planking, a courtyard located on the second level has large openings with green roofs that visually connect the space to the street on the lower level beyond. This allows the tenants to enjoy a secured open space while still connecting to the larger community. This project had unique challenges and opportunities: challenging jurisdictional processes, stringent code and policy requirements, valuable client and resident input that better informed a thoughtful design, and much more!If you enjoy this episode, visit arcat.com/podcast for more. There is much research suggesting that our emotional competencies predict future career success, and we already know the key role it plays in personal relationships. As a result, social emotional learning (SEL) has become an important area for students to develop in school as well as at home. As schools take on more and more of this responsibility, it's imperative that educators themselves have the opportunity to grow in self awareness and self compassion to be ready to support students in their personal development. Listen in to this episode to hear how Dr. Angela Brooks supported her staff around adult SEL, including the actions she took as a school leader to help staff communicate and navigate conflict with compassion. She also shares the key role that compassion, achievement, and hope play in school transformation, staff culture, and student success. You'll also hear two things teachers can do to grow in self awareness and self compassion, even if they don't have a school leader who has prioritized adult SEL yet. In the early morning hours of November 25th, 2010, the bodies of two teenage girls would be found in an abandoned lot in Augusta, Georgia. 19-year-old Angela Brooks and 17-year-old Nancy Cushman had become fast friends, growing incredibly close through 2010. While they both lived a few miles north (up in South Carolina), they had close ties to Augusta and its surrounding area. The discovery of the teenage girls' bodies early on Thanksgiving morning prompted a widespread canvas and high-profile investigation, but public interest would quickly fade. Meanwhile, a suspicious young man - with personal ties to both victims and a checkered criminal history - would find himself at the center of this unfolding story... "I have been a mental health nurse for the last 25 years in a state-funded mental hospital. I know what 'nursing burnout' feels like. I too have felt trapped by holding my nursing license. Let me share with you how I began transitioning from Exhausted and Burnt-Out Nurse to Thriving Nursepreneur." Angela doesn't claim to be an expert; however, she runs her business exceedingly well. She is currently in transition from nursing full-time to working full-time from home using social media, her blog, and her smart phone. Learn how you too can transition from a stressful job to running a successful home-based business! Before and after the show, please post your questions for Jory and Angela on Jory's Facebook Business Page. Angela Brooks is a former burnt-out mental health nurse who is now a nurse educator, thriving business owner, and online marketing trainer. She is married to an amazing man who has supported her continually on her business journey. Angela is also the mom of two busy boys who are very active in sports (including travel baseball!). She quickly learned how to take her business "on the move" so she could attend her sons' games and practices.
