About the Show:"It's not a lack of food problem. You know, our country has an abundance of food. It's getting that food to the people that need it." – Chef Sam WalkerHunger doesn't take a day off.For millions of children across the United States—and right here in Arkansas—food insecurity is a daily reality that shapes everything from how well a child sleeps to how clearly they think in school to how much hope they carry into their future. On this episode of I Am Northwest Arkansas®, host Randy Wilburn sits down with Chef Sam Walker, the chef and owner of Gaskins on Emma in downtown Springdale, to talk about one of the most urgent and quietly persistent challenges facing our communities: making sure every child has enough to eat.Sam's journey from growing up in Little Rock to building a restaurant rooted in hospitality and belonging has given him a front-row seat to both the power of food and the pain of its absence—and he's decided to do something about it.Chef Sam Walker is the kind of cook who understands that food is never just food.It is connection, dignity, memory, and care—all served on a single plate. In this conversation, Sam opens up about how his love for the culinary craft has always been inseparable from his love for people and why that philosophy has drawn him into the fight against childhood hunger in a deep and personal way. From the growing culinary renaissance reshaping Springdale and Northwest Arkansas into a legitimate food destination to the national movement rallying chefs, communities, and everyday people around the No Kid Hungry campaign, this episode is a reminder that the most powerful thing a community can do is feed its children—and that the people leading that charge are often the ones standing behind the stove.Key Takeaways:Community Through Food: Bringing people together around the table builds lasting connections and support for those in need.Tackling Food Insecurity: Northwest Arkansas faces real challenges, but people in the region are stepping up to help.Chef's Night for No Kid Hungry: The event features 20 chefs, aiming to raise $50,000 to ensure kids don't go hungry.Springdale's Culinary Boom: Springdale is now recognized as a hub for outstanding food, thanks to chefs and entrepreneurs committed to growth.Multiple Ways to Help: Whether you buy a ticket, sponsor, or donate, you can be a part of this movement to end child hunger. All this and more on this episode of the I Am Northwest Arkansas® podcast.Important Links and Mentions on the Show*Chef's Night for No Kid Hungry – April 26 at the Jones Center, SpringdaleChef Cycle No Kid Hungry: Learn more, donate, or sponsor rides and events Chef Cycle 2026Chef Sam Walker on InstagramChef Sam Walker on LinkedInGaskins on Emma (Springdale's food corridor anchor)Hive at Bentonville – Raised $80,000+ for No Kid HungryMentioned chefs from out of town: Ted Cizma (California), Vinnie Cimino (Ohio), Joe Flamm (Chicago), Rebecca Masson (Texas), Lambert Givens (Boston)Sponsor, donate, or attend via links in the show notes or by emailing hello@iamnorthwestarkansas.com for direct info and connectionsThis episode is sponsored by*FindItNWA.com Try ONBoardNWA.com Today!*Note: some of the resources mentioned may be affiliate links. KDK's Chicken & Waffles in Fayetteville will open later than planned. Hear when the Botanical in Fayetteville will open! Also, Artemis next door is soon-to-open! Rendezvous Junction Brewing is holding a chili cookoff. We tell you how to compete in it. Buster Belly's old location on Dickson is getting a new tenant. On this week's Flavors Flashback, hear the horror that was the week leading up to the opening of Gaskins on Emma. Natural State Rabbits resides in downtown Rogers and is the largest supplier of rabbit to restaurants in the country. They're also a biologics company. They use parts of rabbits for medicine and other things around the nation and the world. It's a pretty amazing story and FULL of history as the company started in 1911. We had the conversation at Pizzeria Ruby, as their relationship with Natural State Rabbit started before it was even called that. In fact, there was no Pizzeria Ruby at that point, and they were operating a food truck! How they got connected is a fun story. By the way, we were feasting on rabbit tenders during the interview and they were so good. I've recently become a fan of rabbit – if you haven't tried it yet, think chicken but grass-fed and leaner. It's SO GOOD. They're offering OUR listeners and followers 15% off their starter variety box, just use “FLAVORS” as the discount code at nsrabbitmeat.com. That includes free shipping, or you can hop over to downtown Rogers and pick it up if you'd like. Among the many murder cases handled by South Carolina attorney Dick Harpootlian, one continues to stand apart: the prosecution of Donald “Pee Wee” Gaskins. A serial killer and sexual predator, Gaskins claimed to have taken more than 100 lives and is known to have murdered over a dozen people, including a young child and his own teenage niece. He killed for both revenge and gratification, using whatever methods were available - from knives and firearms to poison, suffocation, and drowning. Disturbingly, he maintained a charming persona, presenting himself as friendly and generous while privately committing the most heinous of crimes. One of his most shocking occurred on Death Row, when he murdered another inmate using an explosive device, demonstrating that his capacity for violence extended even behind bars. In this episode, I'm joined by Dick Harpootlian, author of Dig Me a Grave: The Inside Story of the Serial Killer Who Seduced the South, who prosecuted Gaskins, to share firsthand insight into the man and his crimes. This weekly show is now part of the "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" daily podcast, which you can find at SiouxFallsLive.com, MidwestSportsPlus.com, and most podcast platforms like the one you find here! So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! What is the silver bullet? This is a question outside observers may ask when teams like the Jackrabbits and the Coyotes produce a late-season turnaround. Both have gone from funks — the Jacks' four-game slide after a 7-0 start and more the Yotes' haven't-figured-it-out-yet malaise at 5-4 — to heaters that make them look like dangerous playoff teams. In South Dakota State's case, the return of quarterback Chase Mason is an easy answer, given how flawless, electric, and inspired the Jacks looked in their 41-3 first round playoff win over New Hampshire. But SDSU had already turned the corner the week before in the dramatic win at North Dakota. So, what is the other silver bullet at SDSU? Hint: It lies in both the head coach and offensive coordinator. In Wednesday's "John-o-logue," Happy Hour John Gaskins plucked insight from Dan Jackson and others (like John Stiegelmeier) to pinpoint the turning points. At USD, there isn't one player or aspect that sticks out as a cure-all in their four-game win streak, which included three consecutive wins over Top 25 teams just to reach the playoffs. But there was a broad, overarching concept employed by head coach Travis Johansen that yielded powerful results. It wasn't an obvious or dramatic silver bullet, but Johansen reveals it in his weekly one-on-one 30 minute chat with Gaskins. After a close first half against Drake, the Yotes pulled away 38-17 in the first round of the playoffs as quarterback Aidan Bouman had his best game of the season. Was there a big turnaround moment for Bouman? How has Larenzo Fenner broken out into an at-times impossible-to-cover receiver? How did Mikey Munn become an All-MVFC first teammer? Johansen answers these questions and gives a glimpse into why Mercer has the nation's second-best passing yardage attack, and what kind of challenges the Bears defense will present to USD's now-humming offense.Meanwhile, Wednesday marked (Early) National Letter of Intent Signing Day for high school athletes all across the country. It is always a day for college football teams to pump up their incoming recruiting class.Gaskins chatted with two Sioux Falls standouts about their paths to CFB — Sioux Falls Washington receiver Jhace Woods (South Dakota State) and Sioux Falls Jefferson tight end Eddie Whiting (Michigan State). How did the schools they signed with first start a relationship? What led them to choosing their school, and which other schools tried to pluck them away?In both players' cases, the schools they chose went through coaching changes — Woods earlier in his process when Jacks coach Jimmy Rogers left for Washington State, and Whiting just days before signing day when MSU fired Jonathan Smith and within 24 hours hired Pat Fitzgerald. So, what kept the Sioux Falls ballers loyal to their original choice?

Encourage exploration instead of just drilling facts.Use Stories to Teach Math – Turning math problems into narratives or real-world situations makes them more meaningful and relatable for kids.Encourage Mathematical Thinking – Instead of giving answers right away, ask your kids questions like “What do you think?” or “How else could we solve this?”It's Okay to Change Your Approach – If a curriculum isn't working, try something new! Hands-on learning, different resources, or adjusting your teaching style can make a big difference.Focus on Confidence, Not Just Correct Answers – Helping kids feel comfortable making mistakes and thinking through problems builds long-term math success.Math Doesn't Have to Be a Daily Battle – Shift the focus from completing worksheets to fostering curiosity and discovery.Links and Resources: Homeschool Better Together Free CommunityDenise Gaskins WebsiteDenise Gaskins' BlogDenise Gaskins Playful Math StoreThe "If Not Methods" blog SeriesMy Math Journaling Adventures KickstarterFor full show notes and a transcript of today's episode, head to pambarnhill.com/hsbt32To join our free homeschool community, you can create an account right here.

I'm Stacey Simms and every other Friday I bring you a short episode with the top diabetes stories and headlines happening now. XX Big warning from the FDA about medical alerts from smart phones. They're warning that they've received multiple reports of users missing or not hearing important medical alerts from their phones, leading to cases of dangerously low blood sugar and even death. But the FDA warns that certain phone settings, such as pausing notifications, may cause patients to miss critical updates. In other cases, connecting the phone to a new audio source, such as a car stereo, could change the volume of the alerts users are accustomed to hearing. They have some recommendations to help, mostly just confirming alarms are working before you need them.. and I'll link up the full story in the show notes. Reading between the lines here, it seems like the problem here may be the thousands of unregulated apps that make health claims – not just for people with diabetes. So it's a good idea to check the apps you're using and the companies that make them. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/health/patients-using-diabetes-apps-can-miss-critical-alerts-heres-how-to-make-sure-youre-getting-them/ XX What costs less during pregnancy? CGM or finger sticks? In the real word, a new study says CGM costs less… Okay, first keep in mind that the cost savings here wasn't about the glucose monitoring supplies, it was about a lower rate of neonatal ICU admissions. In a base-case analysis in which researchers assumed all women would use seven finger sticks per day as dictated by the American Diabetes Association's guidelines for diabetes management in pregnancy, CGM had a higher per-person cost than SMBG. However, in a real-world analysis in which women with a CGM used three finger sticks per day and those performing SMBG used five finger sticks daily, CGM was more cost-effective. In the real-world analysis, CGM users had a per-person cost of $2,747 for the CGM, $988 for finger sticks and $9,973 for neonatal ICU admissions. For SMBG, finger sticks cost $1,647 and neonatal ICU admission costs were $12,876. The reduction in neonatal ICU admission rates with CGM use led to a mean cost savings of $2,903 in the real-world analysis. “These findings justify paying for CGM devices in type 1 diabetes pregnancies, even in the U.S., which has an expensive health care system,” Polsky said future research should focus on the cost-effectiveness of automated insulin delivery systems in pregnancy.   “Automated insulin delivery use has been shown to improve glycemic outcomes in type 1 diabetes pregnancies, but it is still unclear if it improves maternal or neonatal health outcomes and if it would be cost-beneficial,” Polsky said. https://www.healio.com/news/endocrinology/20250205/cgm-may-lead-to-lower-health-care-costs-for-pregnant-women-with-type-1-diabetes   XX Couple of interesting comments from Medtronic at the recent JP Morgan Chase conference. The CEO says he company is “mainly a type 1 business, moving into type 2,”  He says stated that their patch pumps program remains dynamic.. Medtronic expects its 800-series pump to come in at around half the size of the latest-generation 780G. The post says the company plans for a pivotal study in 2025. Potential features could include extended reservoirs and extended-wear sets, plus a brand-new Android/iOS app. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/medtronic-next-gen-insulin-pumps-coming/ XX Beta Bionics also says they're working on a tubeless patch that they plan to launch in 2027. The company reported the device has two parts. One reusable component holds the electronics that operate the device and motor. A second disposable part includes an adhesive patch, insulin reservoir, insertion device, and the cannula used to deliver insulin. Beta Bionics said the pump is planned for use in people with type 1 diabetes and later will expand its use for people with type 2. The company also reported it is continuing work on an AID system that would, in addition to using insulin to lower blood sugar, also contain glucagon to raise blood sugar. Research is being conducted into dual-hormone systems, but none are available yet for people with diabetes. https://diatribe.org/diabetes-technology/tech-watch-diabetes-tech-news XX New approval for the treatment of diabetic macular edema. Susvimo is the “first and only FDA-approved treatment shown to maintain vision in people with DME with fewer treatments than standard-of-care eye injections,” the release said. This is the second indication for Susvimo, which is also approved for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration. https://www.healio.com/news/ophthalmology/20250204/fda-approves-susvimo-for-diabetic-macular-edema XX How about this one… drinking ketones improves heart health, a new small-scale study from the University of Portsmouth has found. This is the first time people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been given a drink with ketone esters - a supplement that is meant to plunge your system into ketosis - to monitor the effect on the heart. Ketosis is the metabolic state where your body is forced to burn fats instead of carbohydrates. but more research is needed because we only assessed participants on the day, which means we have no idea what the chronic impact of drinking ketones would be." The study was carried out after research showed  The drug SGLT2i was used to lower glucose in patients with diabetes and longitudinal studies were showing that it was inadvertently protecting the heart. The hypothesis was that the drug induces ketosis and the heart was using ketones, which improved heart health, but the evidence for this was limited so our research set out to prove the connection." https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250205/Drinking-ketones-improves-heart-health-for-people-with-type-2-diabetes.aspx XX Another pump wants into the EU. Modular Medical looks to obtain a CE mark in the first quarter of 2026. The patch pump, MODD1, got FDA clearance last fall. The company says it will be available early this year.. but I haven't heard much about it since the approval.   https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/modular-medical-step-forward-ce-mark/ XX New CGM system with a reusable applicator and rechargeable wearable transmitter moves forward. Trinity Biotech announced new pre-pivotal clinical data. This company is based in Ireland and is looking for iCGM approval down the road.. hoping to file with the FDA in 2026. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/trinity-biotech-expects-submit-cgm-fda-2026/ XX Body-weight cycling (also known as yo-yo dieting) has been shown to significantly increase the risk of kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes, regardless of body mass index (BMI) and other traditional risk factors. This is a new study published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Participants with greater weight fluctuations experienced a 40% decline in kidney health from baseline values https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250204/Yo-yo-dieting-found-to-harm-kidney-health-in-type-1-diabetes-patients.aspx XX Eli Lilly's profit doubled in the fourth quarter, propelled by its hot-selling diabetes and obesity treatments, and the drugmaker came out with a mostly better-than-expected 2025 forecast. Overall, Lilly's quarterly profit swelled to $4.41 billion. https://apnews.com/article/eli-lilly-fourth-quarter-mounjaro-zepbound-ca026922525a9e3abb1b75d329628bef XX Abbott starts a new campaign all about bias and misconceptions when it comes to diabetes. I'm excited that they seem to have worked here with the Behavioral Diabetes Institute. Nearly 70% believe there is stigma associated with their condition.1 Diabetes as a Punchline: 85% of people living with diabetes say they have seen inaccuracies about diabetes in the media, including on TV shows, movies, and social media, and 40% of people felt that diabetes is often used as the punchline of a joke.1 Abbott's new Above the Bias initiative aims to help others see the world from the perspective of someone living with diabetes. The initiative builds upon efforts by several diabetes organizations, patient advocacy groups, and experts that continue to work to reduce stigma about diabetes.3 People can learn more about Above the Bias and watch the film at AboveBias.com. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/abbotts-above-the-bias-film-reveals-misconceptions-can-impact-diabetes-care-302367723.html   -- When you watch the Super Bowl this weekend, watch for Noah Grey. .he's the Kansas City Chiefs tight end who backs up Travis Kelce and he's lived with type 1 since age 18. Grey spoke to media this week about how he loves to interact with kids who have T1D and their shared love of fruit gummies to treat lows. These are the folks behind the amazing Macey's Believer's charity. Janice Gaskins passed away this week after a long fight with breast cancer. Today, we're taking another look at the sinister life of South Carolina's most infamous killer, Donald “Pee Wee'” Gaskins. Known as “The Meanest Man in America,” Gaskins terrorized the Pee Dee with a spree of murders that left a haunting legacy. Today, we'll explore his shocking crimes, the twisted mind behind them, and the impact his dark path had on his victims and the state of South Carolina.  Also, from swamp-dwelling beasts to spectral creatures of the night, South Carolina is packed with tales of cryptids that defy logic and ignite the imagination. And later, the headmistress of a strict boarding school made it her life's work to keep her students in check. But after one rebellious girl eloped in the middle of the night, Madame Talvande made sure to give the school a prison-like feel in hopes that something like that wouldn't happen again. March 10, 2007. Chocowinity, North Carolina. The mother of 19-year old university student Ginni Wood calls her up on her cell phone, but after their brief conversation ends, Ginni is never heard from again. Ginni told her mother she had travelled to Brownsville, Texas for spring break in order to visit her 19-year old best friend, Kelly Gaskins, and Kelly's 23-year old boyfriend, Ervin Williams. However, it turns out that Ervin is a fugitive who fled North Carolina after failing to appear in court on numerous felony charges and Kelly is also wanted for a probation violation. This leads to speculation that the couple travelled across the border into Mexico in order to evade the authorities before Ginni joined them there, but Ervin and Kelly are also not heard from again. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the perplexing story of three American citizens who seemingly went missing together in Mexico and have not been seen for the past 17 years. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office at (252) 946-0101 or the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation at (919) 662-4500.
