After earning her BS in Dental Hygiene from USC, Dr. Holden found her calling in a pediatric dental office in Beverly Hills. After five years, she returned to USC to earn her DDS and a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. She was fortunate to return to the same practice for a year as an associate before opening her own Pediatric Dental office in Manhattan Beach, California. As the only female pediatric dentist in Manhattan Beach, Dr. Holden created a thriving practice. She also has a second office that serves teens and college students, catering to her older patients. The idea for Tanner's Tasty Paste came after struggling to find a toothpaste that her sons would actually use. The concept was born when her son first tried the toothpaste and excitedly asked, “Mom, can I brush my teeth again?” Tanner's Tasty Paste is available in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Orange Vanilla. Dr. Holden is married and has two sons. Her older son, Chase, just graduated from USC Film School and is seeking an entry-level position. Her youngest son, who has special needs, is the happiest guy and still uses Tanner's Tasty Paste! It has touched so many special needs and sensory children! She still practices full time as a pediatric dentist in Manhattan Beach. It is time to take a ride on the flavor wave!

Dr. Katie Foster booked time with me out of the blue last spring (which never happens), and brought cookies and we shared a very enjoyable coffee and conversation. She was weeks away at the time from opening her business, Timnath Kids Dentistry, and was exploring the business community at large and curious about LoCo Think Tank. She's not a member at LoCo - yet - but she's our kind of people. When she can carve time away from a young business and two young children we'll be ready to find a great chapter for her! Before this conversation, I had no impression of what the world of a pediatric dentist would be like - but now I know it's not so different from any other business, especially in health care. Exercise patience, show love, build a caring team - and most of the other stuff will come together! Katie grew up in the Reno, Nevada area, and she started playing the violin at an early age, and was also a competitive swimmer. She was inspired to be a dentist whilst still in grade school, and if you listen to this conversation, and you have young children - you'll probably want her to be their dentist - just sayin'. This episode is not a paid ad, even though it may seem that way - just a fun and open talk with a smart and fresh kid dentist - so I hope you enjoy, as I did, my conversation with Dr. Katie Foster. Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
Ok the title is a bit of a click-bait, but I did have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Staci Whitman on the podcast. Dr. Whitman is a practicing pediatric dentist in Portland, Oregon. She is a "functional" pediatric dentist who practices in a demographic that caters to more natural and holistic modalities. Her practice is heavy in dietary guidance, vitamin supplementation, ozone therapy, tie/lip tie release, myofunctional therapy, hard tissue lasers, and also traditional SSCs and general anesthesia. I wanted to have this conversation to widen my horizons and provide me with more context to educate and converse with my own patients who have concerns about fluoride, toxins, and materials. I was surprised to find that I agreed with the majority of points that Dr. Whitman discussed. You can tell that she's passionate about educating her patients, promoting a healthy diet, and focusing on prevention rather than picking up a handpiece to fix the world's problems. I think this will be a great episode for stimulating some critical thinking skills about the way we discuss treatment options with our crunchier families that we all know and love!

Today I have the pleasure of hosting my former boss, but current friend and mentor, Dr. David Carreras. David started and ran a large practice with four offices in central Minnesota for years before recently selling his practice equity to his partner. I worked for their office after residency prior to COVID and starting my own practice in Missouri. Dr. Carreras retired in Florida where he spends his time on the beach, while making sure to stay busy with dental mission trips and teaching back in Minnesota at the dental school. Dennis and I reflect on his successful career and practice ownership journey. We talk about areas where he excelled, and also identified things that he wish he would have done differently. He also shares his thoughts on growth, partnerships, and surrounding yourself with good team members.
Aimee is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and mommy to 3 boys. She is the owner of Oceans Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry with her husband and practices in Westfield, New Jersey. Listen to our first episode with Aimee: Teething, Pacifiers, & Early Oral Health Habits with Pediatric Dentist Dr. Aimee LeibowitzHelpful Notes from this Episode:How many times should a toddler brush their teeth a day? Twice is ideal, however if were being more real mama realistic it might be once — but make sure you make that ONE time NIGHTTIME bc after a full day of eating breakfast lunch dinner snacks etc you def don't want them going to bed with dirty teeth, saliva isn't slowing as much when we sleep, and that food/plaque will just sit overnight on the enamel causing decay. Morning brush would be great but I know in my house mornings are a hot mess most of the time so something as simple as putting the age appropriate amount of toothpaste on the brush and giving it to your kiddo and letting them do their thing is A-OK and way better than skipping it all togetherToothpaste with fluoride or without fluoride? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends an age appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first tooth erupts. It's been proven with extremely good high quality studies that fluoride prevents cavities. If you are looking for a fluoride alternative brands like Risewell or Boka are HYDROXYAPETITE toothpastes that act in a similar and more natural way to fluoride to strengthen teeth. What kinds of foods support teeth health? Low carb foods i.e. your crunchy leafy veggies, cheese, nuts, meats, water, now let's be real mama realistic again for hot sec - is this a typical diet for most toddlers — no however encouraging them and exposing them to these foods from the get go will help establish healthy habits, rather than the chicken finger and mac cheese diet. Other great choices fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, popcorn. For sweets: dark chocolate and ice cream are a way better option than fruit snacks, candy or cookies. What is the least worst Halloween candy? Chocolates are a keep as they wash away off our teeth faster, gummies and sours etc. are a trash as they stick and cling to the teeth long after you've finished eating them. How do we talk to our toddlers about candy? I love to use the term “sugar bugs” to talk about cavities. For Halloween: I tell parents let your kids go crazy that night, eat what they want and after that GET RID OF IT. FREQUENCY is way worse than QUANTITY. Meaning if you having pieces of candy every single day over months its more like to cause cavities than if you had a whole lot all at once right on Halloween. Hear Dr. Scott Papineau talk about trends in different areas of the country that impact the need for oral conscious sedation, as well as different commonly used sedation combinations- some states have dictated no polypharmacy for pediatric dentists-basically limits to midazolam (short duration). In this solo episode, I wanted to review a scoring system I created that allows pediatric dentists to reflect and compare their own attributes. Some pediatric dentists are great at running a business, some are excellent clinicians, some have great behavior management with the kids, and some are extremely efficient with their time. But often times as dentists we fail in other categories where we should be trying to improve. For example, just because somebody can see 80 patients a day and produces 2 million dollars a year doesn't mean that they are truly improving oral hygiene in their community, that they are actually doing good dentistry, or that they have a staff that is proud to work with them. The scoring system includes the 10 categories relevant to a good pediatric dentist, with a 1-10 score for each (100 total possible points). The idea is to go through and reflect on these categories with minimal bias to determine how good of a pediatric dentist you are. The 10 scoring categories of a good pediatric dentist are broken down in this podcast and include: Clinical skills and outcomes Behavior management Impact on community oral health Parent perceptions Involvement in organized dentistry Office staff scores Doctor mental health Office technology and improvements Office production Office overhead
