Angela Sterritt is an award-winning investigative journalist, TV, radio, and podcast host, and national bestselling author. A story that began 13 years ago on an island off Newfoundland had another chapter written yesterday in Spillane’s Bar and Restaurant in Castlegregory. It was there that Brad and Anita Squires, who wrote a message in a bottle and threw it into the sea off Bell Island, got to meet the couple who found the bottle, Jon and Kate Gay, as well as the community. Jerry went there to catch up with the Canadians, now married with children and talk to them about the journey the message in the bottle has taken them on.

A message in a bottle sent from Canada almost 13 years ago finally reached land this week, when it was found on a West Kerry beach. The letter was written by a couple called Brad and Anita; they put it into a bottle which they threw off the cliffs on Bell Island, Newfoundland. This week Kate Gay found the bottle, over 3,200km away, in Scraggane Bay on The Maharees. Kate along with Martha Farrell spoke to Jerry on Tuesday. Radio Kerry got in touch with the couple – now a husband and wife. Brad Squires spoke to Jerry.

Mechanical issues have once again forced ferry service to Bell Island down to just one ship. We take you to the lineup for the Bell Island ferry, where passengers are having some major travel reservations, plus we check in with a frustrated mayor. (Martin Jones with Philip Tobin)

Stranded at home. And stranded across the water. Both Bell Island ferries were out of commission earlier this week. We got an update from life-long resident Teresita McCarthy.

Ferry services are a significant issue in MHA Jim McKenna's district. The Veteran, which normally sails to Fogo and Change Islands, is in drydock, and the replacement vessel, the Kamutik W, will be out of service on May 21. To complicate things further, the ferry fleet took a hit when the Flanders was damaged by fire on Bell Island last week. Jim McKenna is the new MHA for the district or Fogo and Change Islands.

A fire on board the M-V Flanders yesterday afternoon means that ferry is not crossing the tickle this morning. Transportation Minister John Abbott gave us an update on what happened and how it's impacting ferry service to Bell Island.

Bell Islanders haven't been able to access their landfill there for almost six month. The Eastern Regional Service Board runs the facility, and people on the island say the board is out of touch with their reality. The CBC's Mike Moore headed to Bell Island to speak to people about the situation.

Fred Hutton's win was announced last night, earning 2,603 votes. He beat out fellow candidates, PC Tina Neary, NDP Kim Churchill, and Independent Darryl Harding, who were also running for the seat. He joined us in studio to talk about his reaction to the campaign and the big win.

Today is Overdose Awareness Day. Shelley Kavanagh is the peer support coordinator at The Hug in Bell Island, a support center for those grappling with addiction. We spoke with Shelley about the vigil they'll be holding on Friday, September 1st.

We found out why advocates at the Workers Action Network are concerned about that situation. Heather Blanchard worked at the Bell Island Seniors Complex for 12 years. The Morning Show's Andrea McGuire spoke with her and Sara Moriarity from Workers Action Network NL.

There are many strange stories that come to us from Canada. When the early Irish settlers came to Newfoundland they also left part of their legends with the locals.
