Bell Island, Newfoundland is said to be one of Canada's most haunted places, with more than its share of tragic deaths and mysterious phenomena. But one story stands out above the rest. "Taste what I tasted. Smell what I smelled." These are the haunting words of the Ghost of Dobbin's Garden, more commonly known today as the Swamp Hag of Bell Island. Said to be the restless spirit of a woman who died tragically, she is doomed to roam the island forever, looking for victims to share in her torment. SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Dan's first story is really three stories mixed with some local lore. First, after going over the kinds of paranormal encounters most often reported from people visiting Virginia's Braley, we explore the story of a murder that took place that that has added to its reputation as a paranormal hotspot. Then, we'll go over what an area ghost hunter claims happened to them there. And finally, a young woman's terrifying modern encounter claim. After that, we'll be off to Canada to cover a whole bunch of lore associated with numerous sightings of a night hag in Newfoundland. Lynze shares just one big story this week about a less scary but rather helpful spiritual hitchhiker! New Merch: The official merch for our 3rd annual Haunted Halloween Show is here! That was key... and hire the right people, because you have to have the right people around you to build a business.”60 to 70% of Bill's business was in the fishery and with 16 staff in 1992 the cod moratorium hit him hard. 224# The Bell Island Boom | Extra-terrestrial or natural phenomenon On Sunday, April 2, 1978, a huge bang was heard at Bell Island just before noon. The bang was so loud that people reported hearing it as far as 100 km away. The blast sent a shock wave that shook buildings on the island and killed some animals. The energy release was so powerful that the Vela satellites (which the US government used to detect nuclear tests by other powers) noticed the phenomenon, now known as the Bell Island Boom. Bell Island, in Newfoundland's Conception Bay, is full of mystery. Once home to an immense iron ore mine, the community drew people from all over the world. Over the years its been home to many strange sightings, happenings and unexplained events. It has even been called one of the most haunted islands in North America. This episode scratches the surface of some of Bell Island's lore starting with a giant squid attack off the island's coast, then a conversation with some paranormal investigators — the people behind the new T+E series History's Most Haunted — who recently visited Bell Island. History's Most Haunted follows paranormal experts Corine Carey, Leanne Sallenback and Kelly Ireland as they travel across North America meeting with those who have come face-to-face with the unknown. The series features an episode dedicated to Bell Island including dramatizations of eyewitness accounts and local history provided by experts, historians and citizens of the island. The series debuts on September 8, 2023, 11:30pm NT. The episode closes with the segment ‘Monstrous Things' exploring a sea monster sighting off Fortune Harbour in the late 19th century. In our nineteenth episode of Unsolved Canadian Mysteries, Kenton de Jong and Dylan Fairman discuss The Bell Island Boom. Right before noon on Sunday, April 2, 1978, a massive explosion rocked a small mining island in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Bickford family farm had exploded. Within days, military officials from Canada, Russia, and the USSR descended onto the island to investigate. Also spotted were two "men in black" from Los Alamos National Laboratory. What exploded that day in Bell Island? Does it have anything to do with the island being the most haunted island in Canada? Or does it have to do with the mining? Or maybe the mysterious sky quakes happened a few months prior? Come listen and find out!

The Some Weird Podcast does not have a new episode this week because we were affected by COVID. Fortunately, we are able to present a remastered version of our very first episode: The Bell Island Boom. We have been able to polish the audio and edit the story to be more aligned with our current episode style. We will be back in 2 weeks with a brand new episode. In this episode we ponder what could have caused a mysterious BOOM over the Bell Island in April of 1978. Was it natural? Was man-made? Was it a heavenly bowling tournament? Who tried to figure it out and what do the experts think? How can Barry weave wrestling into the conversation? All these questions and more are explored in “The Bell Island Boom”. Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador's Bell Island is rich in three commodities: iron ore, storytellers, and things that go bump in the night. The Nightcap after show episodes are typically only available on the premium feed When one imagines the setting for a story involving experimental weapons, international espionage, unexplained aerial anomalies, and cold war anxieties... they probably aren’t picturing a tranquil island in Newfoundland. But, there is no imagining about it, Bell island, Newfoundland, is just that. This all stems from a still unexplained aerial explosion that rocked the skies about the island, and set in motion a series of bizarre events that seemed pulled from the pages of a science fiction novel. The entire ordeal still leaves those who lived through it scratching their heads, but one thing is without question, for a moment in 1978, Canadian and American defense satellites detected more light reflecting from this island than what was seen during the bombing of Hiroshima and we aren’t certain why. Bell Island, off the coast of Newfoundland Bell Island is a small rocky piece of land off the coast of Newfoundland, with a population of about 3,000. Yet it’s known to conspiracy theorists around the globe because of a mysterious event that happened in 1978: a massive explosion in the sky that destroyed electrical devices and wires across the island…and it only get weirder from there. Exploding TVs, men in black, secret government weapons tests, weather-altering technology, mind control…even aliens? OK, probably not aliens.Resources:History – Mystery Booms“This Great Laboratory”: The U.S. Naval Research LaboratoryConcorde - WikipediaSupersonic History: What Routes Did Concorde Fly?Nighttime Podcast Bell Island Boom The Bell Island Boom -SkeptoidThe Mystery Bell Island Boom April 2, 1978 - YouTube -DocumentaryThe Bell Island Boom: What Were the Men in Black Investigating in 1978? - YouTubeTHE INVISIBLE MACHINE - ELECTROMAGNETIC WARFARE - YouTubeBell Island (Newfoundland and Labrador) - WikipediaBall lightning - Wikipedia Music:Blue Sizzle - Madness Paranoia by Kevin MacLeodAnguish by Kevin MacLeodThe Big Guns by Silent PartnerCreepin by MK2Myths and Mysteries theme is Circles in the Sky by CinematicWavesAll songs used under the Creative Commons License.

With friends, he established the Shipwreck Preservation Society of Newfoundland & Labrador five years ago. The aim of the Shipwreck Society is to document, protect and promote awareness of shipwrecks and nautical history across the province. The Society is currently working with the Bell Island Heritage Society to create a virtual museum exhibit online on the U-boat attacks at Bell Island in 1942 and the sinking of four ore ships. If you or someone you know has memories, stories, or photos of the Bell Island U-boat attacks, you can share them with the Shipwreck Preservation Society through their Facebook page or on their website.
