As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes every corner of the workplace, payroll stands out as one of the most sensitive and high-stakes functions in HR. Accuracy, data security, and compliance are non-negotiable — yet payroll leaders are under constant pressure to improve efficiency and reduce risk. As AI capabilities expand, the big question for employers isn't if AI should be integrated into payroll processes, but how to do it safely, ethically, and effectively. Understanding this balance is crucial for every HR and payroll professional navigating the future of work. In this insightful episode of HRD Talk, Ben Cartwright speaks with Kylie Baullo, General Manager of ADP for Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, to unpack what AI really means for payroll. Together, they explore the practical ways AI is already improving accuracy, reducing manual errors, and freeing up valuable time — while also addressing the concerns around data privacy, job security, and responsible AI use. Tune in to hear about: - How AI can reduce payroll errors, boost accuracy, and proactively identify data issues - The critical role of data privacy, ethics, and transparency in AI-powered payroll systems - Practical, everyday AI applications that can improve HR and payroll workflows - How businesses can manage employee concerns about AI and automation in the workplace - The importance of combining human judgement with AI-driven insights for better decision-making - The role of “guardrails” in ensuring AI tools support — not replace — people in payroll This conversation will equip you with a grounded, realistic understanding of AI's role in payroll and how to harness it without compromising what matters most. This week, Kate brings more reminisces from Marjorie Clarke who grew up in Haliburton village in the 1890's and early 1900's. Today it's all about Marjorie's memories of what do you do with cows wandering the streets, especially when every household tended to have a cow on their small property? Plus Paul has the story of Lorne Green, a Canadian radio personality, actor, musician and singer. Lorne became a well-known face and name, especially in North America, for his many roles including as Ben Cartwright in the long-running tv western series Bonanza and as Commander Adama in the cult sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica. Kate Butler is the Director of the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Paul Vorvis is the host of the Your Haliburton Morning Show 7 - 9 a.m. Fridays on Canoe FM 100.9 and streaming on your devices. Giddyap, pardner. This week's episode of brioux.tv: the podcast takes a deep dive into everything you need to know about collecting your favourite TV shows on DVD. My guest is archivist, curator and classic TV expert Andrew J. Klyde, executive producer of Bonanza: The Official Complete Series. For many boomers, Sunday nights were spent with your family crowded around the one set in the house watching Disney, Ed Sullivan at 8 and then at 9, Bonanza. Throughout its 14-season, 431-episode run, Bonanza was the most-popular TV series of the 1960s.Besides making sure every episode was restored and transferred from 35 mm camera negatives, Klyde packed extras and bonus materials into the Bonanza Complete Series DVDs. The result is a Master Class on the history of 20th century television. For example: In digging through the background of Ottawa-born actor Lorne Greene, not the first choice to play ranch patriarch Ben Cartwright, Klyde sourced and added rarely seen profiles and documentaries from the CBC and other Canadian sources. He even added an interview I did back in 1991 with Michael Landon, who played Little Joe on the series and went on to Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven. Sadly, Landon died of cancer three months after we spoke.I'm proud to play a small role in such a handsome salute to this series.  Listen as Klyde takes us back to the Ponderosa with dozens of behind-the-scenes stories. Then if you have a classic TV fan on your Christmas list, take note: Bonanza: The Official Complete Series DVD set is on sale now at Amazon.

Show notes provided by Joe Peluso: "As my old pappy used to say, work is fine for killin' time, but it's a shaky way to make a living." Brett Maverick as portrayed by the great James Garner And WORK they did! From James Garner to Lorne Greene, from Michael Landon to Clint Walker, from Miss Barbara Stanwyck to Melody Patterson, the working actors of Hollywood turned the scripts of numerous writers into a passel of TV episodes that lassoed a nation of eager viewers for over two decades. Would the affable Brett Maverick parlay a sawbuck into a small fortune needed to rebuild an orphanage? Could The Virginian and Trampas lead a crew of cowpokes on a seemingly endless trek that drove 5000 head of prime beef from Medicine Bow, Wyoming to Abilene, Kansas before the winter snows set in? And would Captain Parmenter ever wise up to the shenanigans of Sgt. O'Rouke and Cpl. Agarn in and around Fort Courage? Join your two favorite bronco-busting ranch hands, Richie and Joe, as they ride the frontier landscape that was the AmericanTV Western. Unforgettable larger-than-life characters, harsh landscapes fraught with famine and peril, unbridled lawlessness, and passion, and countless acts of selfless heroism were all part and parcel of a typical night of TV watching in the 1950s and 1960s. From Saturday morning kiddie fare (The Lone Ranger and Fury) to prime-time "adult westerns" Maverick and Bonanza), the genre never ceased to amaze and entertain its loyal viewers. With A-list guest stars and talented newcomers (Burt Reynolds, Steve McQueen, and Clint Eastwood, to name a few), TV westerns told bold tales of courage, tolerance, friendship, and compassion. Sure, there was the occasional shoot-em-up, and the "treeing of a town" now and again, but the weekly efforts of Ben Cartwright, Marshall Matt Dillon, Victoria Barkley, and Judge Henry Garth paved the way over the dusty trails to a more civilized western frontier. And we loved it!! What else is there left to say but, "Who was that masked man?"

Lorne Greene played a duo part, his starring role as Ben Cartwright as well as a look-alike Hustler, exact replica of Papa Ben Cartwright. This was to be one of my favorite roles as I played Dixie Wells, a break from the simple pretty girl parts and given a character that I hadn't ever played before. You might say I was a Seductress.I could slip into being a woman who'd been around and when I say "been around" I mean she'd worked in saloons and knew exactly how to entice men and wrap them around her fingers Big Time.Actually, you fellows are no doubt aware of this species of females, AREN'T YOU???As the character I was familiar with how to "work my feminine charms on my men as you'll surely pick up on & notice her strategies, etc. This was really a very fun part for me to play. And, If I may, the antithesis of who I was in real life. OH BOY!, this was a wonderful part Indeed and one I was excited to play...Going forward, the whole Cartwright family was exceptional, exuding warmth and was special because they represented very good and honest Americans. Each and every one of the actors in the Cartwright Family were Brilliant along with the devoted helper and cook Hop Sing played by Victor Sen Yung. Before closing this fun and interesting segment, I want to mention that I was also chosen to play another part or role on Bonanza that will entice you, my audience, friends and followers. You will see in a totally different Bonanza segment, the lovely and talented Linda Crystal and me together. The title is WARBONNET.Now, let's get right into it.Lorne Greene was wonderful and in my estimation, he enjoyed every minute of it. He would say to me during breaks, "this is a good switch for me. I can finally be a bad guy and surprise my audience.” I heard him utter some words under his breath, quickly looking at me saying, "you didn't hear that did you?" I said, "what"? he said good, you're not supposed to hear words that aren't meant for your ears. To tell the truth, I did hear it but I just wasn't going to go there...You know what I mean.Mr. Greene loved switching back from the honorable Ben Cartwright, powerful head of one of the biggest family ranch owner in the territory, to a swindling hustler bad guy and may I say he did it with a great deal of finesse.During lunch breaks, he'd go into his trailer but occasionally would come out and talk as he always had something to say but only when he was in the mood. Over all, he couldn't have been nicer and garnered a great deal of respect from all cast members and crew.Oh, I want to add something about a specific scene of so-called passion with Ben Cartwright playing a dual part as the bad guy imposter and me, as the conniving wench hoping to luck out and entice some attractive man with her sensual charms, and make some money to get away from being a simple saloon girl selling those charms. Her character had always dreamed of falling in love with a rich man. Thinking back to one day in particular, our Director, Lewis Allen, had become very interested in one scene he was directing. And since I was in that scene, I vividly recall from my vantage point that I could actually see our director's reflection in a mirror on the wall that no one else could see, just me. Especially, NOT Even from the cameraman's POV aka "Point of view". So YES, there was a passionate kiss I had with Ben Cartwright as the conniving look alike bad guy. And lest you forget, I was the only human being that could see the director's reflection in that mirror. Now, to this day, I believe that, for an instant, I saw the director's eyebrows kind of flipping up and down as if He Was not only enjoying but living vicariously through the Ben Cartwright romantic scene. It might have been a nervous tick but I Don't Think So.

I decided to release it now on the first day since we (in the UK) have been instructed to stop work and stay at home due to the coronavirus outbreak. After exploring our wasteful past and the reality of today's trash challenge, Australian journalist Alexandra Spring asks if we are on the tipping point of a rubbish free future. Alexandra joins blogger Kathryn Kellogg to find out more about San Francisco's growing zero waste ambitions. Encased in one single mason jar, Kathryn describes the tiny amount of waste she created over two years and how living without a trace has changed her life. Then, Alexandra meets the inventor Veena Sahajwalla, who shares her belief that we should consider our rubbish to be a resource for the future. As Alex discovers, this attitude and Veena's engineering skills have stopped millions of tyres from ending up in rubbish dumps, and could lead to cities around the world being built from recycled materials. She meets the architect Tom Rankin, who shares how this ‘dump' is indicative of the Roman spirit to waste. Moving through the decades, the historian Agnes Sandras takes Alexandra back to France in 1883, when Parisian Prefect Eugene Poubelle sparked public outcry by forcing citizens to buy a box in which they would place their waste. They discuss how this early form of a modern day ‘bin', or ‘poubelle' in French, shaped how people viewed litter. It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer month, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. In this episode, we’re heading up the M6 to the No Man’s Land of the Premier League: Stoke on Trent. Now Stoke City may bear the inauspicious honour of never having been relegated from the Premier League but, truth be told, a relegation battle might inject a little bit of fun into the life of the fans of the Potters. Now before you start composing strongly worded emails, it was one of our guests today who suggested that quote/unquote “there is a case to be made that Stoke are the most boring team in the league”. And he’s not lying: since arriving in the Premier League in 2008, Stoke have consistently finished between 9th and 14th in the table making them little short of metronomic. The question is, then, where do Stoke City go from here? Should their fans be resigned to midtable mediocrity? Or is there more that the club can do? Joining me this week are David Cowlishaw and Chris Brammer, the founders of the Wizards of Drivel Podcast. Since they began in May 2016, the podcast has gone from strength to strength, even gaining national attention for the #DeployNgoy campaign, a joke that went too far. Dave has written for When Saturday Comes and The Set Pieces, but both he and Chris treat the pod as a hobby, fitting it in between less interesting real life demands like working jobs and raising children. The third Wizard, Ben Cartwright, has joined Dave on a new project - Who Are Ya? A new monthly podcast offering an in-depth documentary on a different club every month.

As Stoke return from the Vitality Stadium with a point, it's one of those confusing little end of season games that asks more questions then it answers. Questions like: WHO can explain Mark Hughes' substitutions? WHAT was Arnie thinking about when Joe Allen's cross came in? WHEN will the good people of Stoke be celebrating Ramadan again? WILL those leaked new kits turn out to be the biggest Macron failure of the weekend? WHERE is Giannelli Imbula? HOWE can Eddie POSSIBLY describe Arter's lunge as an ‘Outstanding tackle'? and WHICH of the podcast quartet is mostly likely to break down into a tragic, Arsenal Fan TV style, ‘Hughes Out' rant…fam? David Cowlishaw joined by Ben Cartwright, Chris Brammer and Tom Thrower as they dissect the game which has ensured Stoke's 10th season in the Premier League. There's also chat on a potential trip to Dortmund and a shocker of a new away kit. After a long hiatus, I am going to upload several recordings together (Leah Sewell, C. Malcolm Ellsworth, Melissa Sewell, and me), as episodes of the podcast. Leah Sewell is a phenomenally talented poet, editor, and cook. I am sure that these are only a few of her occupations, and that she has many others, also requiring super powers. She is an assistant editor at Coconut Book, and also runs the phenomenal Topeka Writers Workshop. I was honored to take part in the workshop last summer, and met many phenomenal poets and writers in Topeka. These recordings were made at our final reading, at the end of last summer. Leah's book Birth in Storm was recently released from ELJ Publications, and I highly recommend it.

Bonanza chronicled the weekly adventures of the Cartwright family, headed by wise widowed patriarch Ben Cartwright (played by Lorne Greene). He had three biological sons, each by a different wife: the oldest was the intelligent and moody Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts); the second was the fun and lovable Eric, better known to viewers by his middle name: "Hoss" (Dan Blocker); and the youngest was the hotheaded and impetuous Joseph or "Little Joe" (Michael Landon). The family's cook was the Chinese immigrant Hop Sing (Victor Sen Yung). The family lived on a thousand-square-mile ranch called "The Ponderosa", on the shore of Lake Tahoe in Nevada; the name refers to the Ponderosa Pine, common in the West. THIS EPISODE: The Saga of Annie O'Toole adapted for radio from Bonanza aired October 24, 1959. Annie O'Toole and her father head out to the Washoe Diggings after her boyfriend, Swede Lundberg, returns with the deeds to two mines. Annie takes one of the deeds in return for the grub stake she gave Swede. Upon her arrival in Nevada, her father dies and she meets up with the Cartwrights. Against Adam's advice (and with his help), Annie decides to open up a restaurant to supply meals to the hungry miners. Things seem to be going well until Swede shows up with another man who claims that Annie's mine is his.
