In episode 285 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with Brady Frost and Tom Bradshaw. Brady Frost and Tom Bradshaw are both Huddersfield Town fans and previously co-hosted a series on the Huddersfield Town podcast ‘And He Takes That Chance' called The Warm Up, where they previewed upcoming games. After doing that for a few years, they wanted to try something new and different but stay within the Huddersfield Town podcast space. They set up a new podcast called ‘Still Smiling', where they interview Town fans, former players and others and aim to remind Town fans you why they love the club. Our Founder Freddie Cocker was a guest on their first series and they have already interviewed a range of illustrious guests, local celebs in the Town fanbase and iconic former players. We first interviewed Brady on this podcast way back when in JCIP #43, and we first interviewed Tom in JCIP #127. We wanted to bring both back on to discuss the new podcast, what they want to achieve with it, some of their favourite episodes and the role it plays in the Huddersfield Town content creator space. We also have a check in with each of their respective, continued mental health journeys. For Brady, we discuss his experience of redundancy, which he went through during the Covid-19 pandemic period. We also discuss him getting engaged, buying a house and his decision to cut down drinking. We finish by discussing a wonderful article he wrote on journalist Daniel Gray's website ‘When Saturday Comes' about a half-and-half scarf and how it became a family tradition for him going to watch Town games. For Tom, we discuss the continued positive role his local Sunday league football team has on his mental health, and his three dogs, which he describes as a ‘life changer'. As always, #itsokaytovent You can subscribe and listen to the Still Smiling podcast on streaming platforms below: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/still-smiling-a-huddersfield-town-podcast/id1756086683 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3HLWlANnokQ6zXsJEDtE5K You can follow them on social media below: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stillsmilingpod/ You can read the full piece Brady wrote on When Saturday Comes here: https://www.wsc.co.uk/stories/close-knit-the-huddersfield-and-arsenal-half-and-half-scarf-thats-worn-with-pride/ You can listen to Part of Brady & Tom's journeys below: JCIP #43 - Brady Frost: https://soundcloud.com/venthelpuk/jcip-43-brady-frost JCIP #127 - Tom Bradshaw: https://soundcloud.com/venthelpuk/jcip-127-tom-bradshaw Support Us: Patreon: www.patreon.com/venthelpuk GoFundMe: www.gofundme.com/f/help-vent-supp…ir-mental-health Merchandise: www.redbubble.com/people/VentUK/shop Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk

With Andy Lyons (WSC), Mike Harrison (City Gent), Kevin Whitcher (The Gooner.) For links to and pictures of these fanzines, to post comments, and to read more related writings and podcasts, visit https://tonyfletcher.substack.com/p/the-fanzine-podcast-ep-25-40-yearsFor over 40 years now, football fanzines have run parallel to music fanzines in the UK, growing out of the same alternative pop culture as did the punk and new wave zines of the 1970s, as evidenced perhaps by the fact that the best known and longest-running of the non-denominational zines, When Saturday Comes, took its name from a song by the Northern Irish new wave band, The Undertones. At their peak in the late 1980s, it's estimated there were at least 300 such football zines publishing regularly in the UK. Where the football zines differ from the music ones is in loyalty. If When Saturday Comes is like an alternative to the glossy football magazines the same way that a long-running music fanzine like The Big Takeover, which was featured on Episode 21, can be seen as a more authentically independent voice than a Spin or Mojo, the majority of zines serve more like alternatives to their stated club's official program. In this context, the Arsenal fanzine The Gooner, whose Kevin Whitcher joins us on this episode, is like a Taylor Swift fanzine, economically removed from the subject it is writing about but passionate about it all the same, while Bradford City's City Gent, whose Mike Harrison, also featured in this episode, would be more comparable to a zine dedicated to a cult band that refuses to go away – Guided By Voices or Teenage Fan Club, perhaps. Even as football fan culture moves largely online, to YouTube channels and podcasts, there will always remain a dedicated, if “discerning” audience, that is willing to read articles and opinion pieces that bring the banter of what we once knew as the football “terraces” in print.Kevin and Mike are joined here by When Saturday Comes' co-founder and ongoing editor, Andy Lyons, for a conversation that discusses the various zines' origins, their rise to influence and prominence, their engagement and effect on the game they support, and how they keep going after four decades and several hundred episodes a piece in the face of the younger fans migration online. The episode also discusses the tragic fire that took place at Bradford City's ground in May 1985, at which City Gent editor Mike Harrison was in attendance. While we don't get into any horrific detail, I do want to let listeners be prepared. Thanks to Richard Edwards and Peter Mountford. Skyfall had grossed over $1bn: but its director, Sam Mendes, wasn't keen originally to return for Spectre. And when the film did get filming, star Daniel Craig was covering the fact that he had a broken leg.Less high profile drama followed 1996's When Saturday Comes, but the Sean Bean-headlined football drama still faced some uphill challenges of its own...This is the last Film Stories episode before a summer break. It's no surprise to anyone that money talks in English football but lately it seems louder than ever. Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recently bought a club in the English lower leagues, while the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund completed a controversial takeover of Newcastle United. Meanwhile, a founding club of the Premier League, Oldham Athletic, faces relegation into the non-league game after years of mismanagement. Vivienne Nunis asks, is private ownership the best way to run football clubs or is it time for a rethink? Wrexham fan Gareth Davies, Tom Hocking of When Saturday Comes magazine and Maggie Murphy, CEO of Lewes Football Club, join in the discussion. Technology saved the day for Millwall yesterday in a gritty 1-1 with relegation haunted Sunderland. The Black Cats has established a deserved lead in the first half thanks a to fine shot from distance by Oviedo (‘the three' in Achtung parlance), only for the goal line assistance to confirm that Sean Hutchinson's 69th minue shot had crossed the line.Overall though, this was a dissatisfying day and result for the Lions. However unlikely it might be, the allure of the outsider's run at the sixth spot in the league table is enticing - and three points yesterday would really have set The Den on fire in anticipation.Perhaps though manager Neil Harris has it right in setting context to Millwall's season, when he reminds us that we started back in August as all the pundits' relegation favourites. The fact that anything under a top ten finish now will feel like a disappointment is a powerful testimony to what has been achieved. This week's edition of Achtung! Millwall includes the familiar in-game stream of consciousness, a fantastic conversation with Michael Hook - father of brave little Isla Caton, whose story had brought West Ham and Millwall together - plus some post game comment from Lucas Ball. The show closes out with a conversation I had midweek with When Saturday Comes contributor and show regular Neil ‘Crazyhorse' Andrews. The subject in hand being over 35 year old Millwall players...To contribute to the Isla Caton appeal please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/achtungmillwallforislaThank you to EVERYONE who has contributed so far - it is massively appreciated by the family I know.Arrivederci MillwallNick@CBL_MagazineCBLthemag@hotmail.co.uk Hosted on Acast.
