This tiki drink makes excellent use of our bitter friend in a way that will please even the most hateful of Campari haters – and we feel bad for the haters (please don't hate). Uncle Brad goes into the surprising origins of the Jungle Bird and, of course, gives us the real deal recipe while Jules hits us with a Kentucky twist. Stick around for the excellent tip inspired by @aberryx    TIP: What are some rimmers and garnishes you can make on your own?    Jungle Bird  In your shaker add:  1½ oz Jamaican rum  ¾ oz Cappelletti Vino Apertivio  1½ oz pineapple juice (fresh is always best)  ½ oz fresh lime juice  Dash of Angostura  Ice  SHAKE IT  Strain over ice into large rocks glass  Garnish with pineapple wedge and cheery, or pineapple leaf, why not all 3? Talking with Deanna about this book was so much fun, celebrating Anne and the cultural impact this story has had. A famous Anne quote is: “I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers”. Well, I'm so glad I live in a world where there is an Anne of Green Gables.Spoiler alert (Not really this is an iconic scene at this point): In the first book Anne accidentally gets her bestie Diana drunk on current wine, which she believes is raspberry cordial. Current wine apparently takes months, so we decided to make Raspberry Cordial Mules, which can be enjoyed with or without alcohol by making it with zero-proof vodka. Shinyribs is an Austin Texas band that began in 2007 as a side project for Kevin Russell, who also goes by Kev, and was then still committed to The Gourds, the band he had co-founded fifteen years earlier. A few years later, The Gourds released their last album, and Kev sauntered over to Shinyribs full time. Known for his showmanship on stage and for a big band approach to both the concept and performances of his music, and drawing from a smorgasbord of funky roots-rock, big band swing, Tex-Mex, screaming soul and burlesque blues, while pumping out infectious rhythms and topping it all with hooky harmony, Shinyribs is a party waiting to happen. At least that is what it sounds like on first listen, and looks like at first glance. Shinyribs is a shindig, and a large one at that, but it is also a vehicle for Kev's unique brand of poetry, which can point to deeper, darker issues at times, especially on his latest album Transit Damage. I spoke with Kev in early October 2023 on a crisp, clear autumn afternoon in the rolling foothills of the Upstate of South Carolina countryside before Shinyribs' performance as a headliner at The Albino Skunk Music Festival, where we talked about the secret sauce that went into his new album, about making good records in the studio and being equally good live, how starting Shinyribs felt like a hail mary to him at first, plus we discuss James Brown and an Albino Skunk Fest memory which parallels one of The Godfather of Soul's signature parts of his shows. I've been thinking about my relationship with the young people in my life lately, and I share a change I'm making to hopefully enhance my interactions. Perhaps you'll be inspired to do something similar. The libation of the month is another experiment! I make a single serving of rum punch using the strawberry syrup I'm made myself.  Try it and let me know what you think. I'm open to suggestions. Rants cover an update on my toe nail saga! Remember that whole experience from last fall? I also give you a glimpse of my experience using the Duolingo App to learn Spanish. Let's just say losing doesn't sit well with me (Ha!). Sick is a new horror film from Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Dawson's Creek, The Vampire Diaries) released on Friday the 13th. The film is a pandemic horror film, so be forewarned. I have thoughts and I share them in the episode, but because this episode is full of spoilers, you should watch the film first. It is about a two friends that decide to quarantine at the family lake house, things don't go as planned. Themed Cocktails: Quarantini (makemeacocktail.com) Ingredients 30 ml Cointreau 30 ml Cranberry Juice 45 ml Gin 15 ml Apple Juice Champagne Directions Add the Cointreau, gin, apple juice and cranberry juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well for 10-15 seconds or until the outside of the shaker becomes frosted. Straininto a chilled cocktail glass. Top up with champagne, garnish with a slice of apple and (as a nod to the days of lockdown) a mini toilet roll on a cocktail stick and serve. Strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a microflower. For the Strawberry-Lemongrass Simple Syrup:2 cups water2 cups sugar5 whole stalks of lemongrass, sliced horizontally and chopped8 strawberries, hulled and quartered Add all ingredients to a medium sauce pot and place over medium heat. In this Juneteenth/Father's Day episode, we deliver a local history lesson that encompasses the struggles and triumphs of a local successful black father who was once a slave, as well as racial divide sparked by media, and voter suppression. CORRECTION DISCLAIMER ABOUT THE DETAILS OF THE GRANDFATHER CLAUSE: In 1907, Georgia Governor Hoke Smith, who had campaigned promising to disenfranchise black voters, signed an act that would amend Georgia's constitution and impose a LITERACY TEST as a requirement for voting. The Georgia Constitution required voters to be male, at least 21, and a resident of Georgia for one year, but did not explicitly disqualify black voters. Because Smith's Amendment would disenfranchise many whites also, it contained exemptions designed to allow whites to vote, even if they failed a literacy test. Among those exemptions: any Union or Confederate veteran or their descendants could vote. Because many white Georgians had grandfathers in the confederate army, this provision became known as the “Grandfather Clause.” Voters approved the amendment in 1908 and Georgia took another long step down the dark road of Jim Crow.
