Welcome to the afterparty. We're gaming 'till we drop. Which might be pretty soon tbh because it turns out we're not as young as we once were. Alba articulates why we're still up gaming when all sensible souls have retired for the evening. Kenan's in charge of the quiz show this week which proves to be as bad an idea as it was last time. We explore the etymology of "meta" and Kenan recaps recent travels. Then we discuss games that keep us up when we're powering down, including Friday, Paleo, Hadrian's Wall, Lost Expedition, Eila and Something Shiny, Aqua, Cascadia, Meadow, Calico, Beacon Patrol, 8-bit difficulty, the Dylan of game design, modeling food chains, fast set-up, tactility, escalating challenges, and the limits of one's appetite for complexity. You tell us which games traipse across your tabletops in the wee hours, including Codenames Duet, The Seventh Citadel, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, Black Sonata, Akropolis, Nemesis: Lockdown, Next Station London, Unlock, Board Game Arena, and whatever Marvel Snap is. Finally, we congratulate ourselves for solving all the problems and challenge our listeners to be cool like us. Music by Alba and the Mighty Lions and Kenan. Sleep tight. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Who was the mysterious woman about whom many of Shakespeare's sonnets are written? In this episode, Dylan tells Bill about a game about that very question. And not only is the theme interesting and unique—it's made specifically for solo play. How shall we play it? Let us count the ways... -------- Have you ever played Black Sonata? What was your experience like? What similar games would you suggest? And what games would you like us to spotlight in future episodes? Let us know at innkeeperstablepodcast@gmail.com.
Cette semaine sort l'As d'Or 2025, c'est Sébastien qui l'a dit ! En plus de ça, Simon & Sébastien vous ont préparé un petit quiz pour vous occuper. ______________________________________

William Shakespeare is generally conceded to be the greatest and most popular writer in the history of the English language. His influence covers the gamut of the human experience — including, as of this week, this podcast.Today we will discuss the impact Shakespeare has had on our culture (second only to the Bible); the controversy over canon, both in the folio and the Bible; the language used by the bard and his king, with its pros and cons; and the mystery woman who has scholars baffled and me completely lost at the game table. Solo Gamers Unite! On this episode of the Board Game BBQ Podcast Dan, Mitch and Mike dive into the world of solo games. Mitch is a veteran of solo game, Mike is new to the solo experience, and Dan is somewhere in the middle. The crew discuss their solo experiences, why they enjoy solo games, and share some of their favourites. In the Sizzling Games segment, Mike has been testing his dexterity with Men At Work, Mitch has been expanding his Undaunted games with the Reinforcements expansion, and Dan has been sneaking around around France in Maquis. We dive back into the Bracket Battle and announce the winner of the last match up: Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion vs Raiders of the North Sea. Finally in Swear an Oath, Dan has almost cleared the decks of unfulfilled oaths with just Journeys of Middle Earth remaining. Mike is roping Jules and Dan into playing Ankh in the coming days, and Mitch tiptoed through the tulips in Meadow. New oaths include Dinosaur Island: Rawr and Write (Dan), Mystic Vale (Mike), and Dune Imperium (Mitch). Richard is joined by Dustin Culbertson from Side Room Games who successfully kickstarted Black Sonata, and will be kickstarting Maquis early next year. Both games were available as print and play versions and Side Room games have taken them and updated them to be fully produced versions of the games. Black Sonata was incredibly successful and so we spoke to Dustin about how he decided on this method of publishing, and how he decided to make it the main way that Side Room Games will be releasing games in the future. We hope you enjoy the episode. For our last episode before 100, we are really excited to shine a big, bright spotlight on a few corners of the board gaming world that you might not know much about. If you want to build up some "indie cred" when it comes to some potential hot games in the future, this is the show for you! First up, we welcome back Chris Harris, who runs the Solitaire Print and Play game design contest on BGG. We spoke with Chris last year, and he's back to talk about how much the contest has grown, how excited we are for past winners and designers to move on to bigger and better things (including the publication of last year's winner, Black Sonata), and what's there to check out this year. As of the date of this episode airing, 8/10/18, the Solitaire PnP contest is still going on. You can check out games, participate in playtests, and follow conversations here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2011569/2018-solitaire-print-and-play-contest Our second interview is a doozy - five people on a Skype call, and somehow it did not collapse in on itself. We welcome various folks involved with the GenCant Game Design contest this year, run in tandem with Button Shy Games. Jason Tagmire is the founder and CEO of Button Shy, while Jon Simantov is the designer of Button Shy's latest game, Liberation, soon to hit Kickstarter. They were two of the judges who declared two winners. Elizabeth Hargrave was recognized for her 2-4 player, "I split, you choose" game, Tussie Mussie, while Corry Damey contributed the 2 player tile laying game, Seasons of Rice. We get into the games, the process of picking winners, and some dos and don't for anyone who wants to enter contests like this one in the future.
In this episode, we take a look at one of Andrew’s favorite solo games: Black Sonata. Andrew also does his best to convince Tim why solo games are worth his time. Show notes below:
