With stubbornness and defiance, WAKE welcomes the wonderful Igor Belokrinitsky, representative of the Ukrainian Wake in Progress Finnegans Wake reading group! Igor joins Toby and TJ for a wide-ranging conversation about the true meaning of indomitability, where Joyce stands in to tell prescient lessons about colonialism, independence, identity, language and exile, which speak directly to the plight of the brave, besieged Ukrainians. We talk about Thomas Pynchon, Nestor Makhno, Monty Python, Joseph Cornell's boxes, and the brilliant mind maps created by Linda Lotiel for each Ukrainian reading session. In war, schadenfreude is necessary, so take your shots at the Russian General if you're a true Wake Otaku, and gird your wedgewords for an episode that is just as generative as it is consumptive. Rip talks to his friend, master mechanic Bobby Campbell, about cars, cars, and more cars.
Often, when you show the Wake to an uninitiated reader, the first reaction will be “that's weird.” Today we embrace the weird and lean into the unconventional, with a delightful, insightful chat with the overseer of the Weirdoverse, Bobby Campbell. For this bonus non-reading episode, we discuss the major role of Robert Anton Wilson in Joyce culture, psychedelics, language creation as class warfare, and ponder the questions over whether the Wake is written in English, whether Joyce had syphilis, whether Joyce was psychic, and whether Joseph Campbell was citing his insider sources. As we consider the mile-long Alka-Seltzer tablet that is the Wake, we settle on questions of the work's place as a sacred text, whether Modernism remains unsolved, and gather our courage to brave the intimidating but friendly purists on Reddit. Today, we welcome Martin Pazzani to the podcast. Martin is a true outdoorsman, having hiked and climbed in all seven continents. He's parlayed that experience with his involvement in the fitness business, and an intellectual curiosity about the scientific benefits of simply getting outside and walking uphill. Those of us who have hiked extensively can identify with Martin's conclusions, yet he presents it in such an accessible way that I'm sure you'll enjoy being informed and entertained in equal measure. You can check out Martin's book on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/SECRETS-AGING-WELL-Healthier-Recharge-ebook/dp/B08B8YC99R/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=ARGkQ&content-id=amzn1.sym.f911c8db-3a2b-4b3e-952f-b80fdcee83f4&pf_rd_p=f911c8db-3a2b-4b3e-952f-b80fdcee83f4&pf_rd_r=141-1163969-3030724&pd_rd_wg=wCInZ&pd_rd_r=0b03db07-3fad-427e-b1b4-d1a01b7fa727&ref_=aufs_ap_sc_dsk, and on his website at https://www.getoutside.online/. I'm back from the UK and am eager to bring more great guests for you. First, though, I want to thank all of you who reached out to me while I was away. Your concern for my welfare was more than touching. I'm forever grateful to my listeners. Today, our main guest is Casey Huffman, AKA Vegas. Casey hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2023, and he shares his story with an infectious enthusiasm which, he'll concede, may not have been there when he set out on his adventure. A solo hiker, and somewhat introverted, he even became the Prom King of the Class of 2023! Casey has a Youtube channel, though he tells me that it isn't all about hiking, so pick your way through it. https://youtube.com/@vegasthepiedpiper?si=izi8BQ2K8TY7nUdv Also today, our Mighty Blue Class of 2024 starts catching up with hikers already into the second half of their hike. Today, it's Bobby Campbell, or Sloggy, who shares the first half of his own thru-hike with us. We need a few more members of the Mighty Blue Class of 2024, so reach out to me at steve@hikingradionetwork.com if you have a candidate for me to track down. Finally today, I'm starting a new book! Stamford Chidge and Martin King interview John Bumstead, an unsung hero for Chelsea, and talk about his love for the club; what it was like to experience the lows of relegation and highs of promotion during the 1980's; playing for John Neal and Bobby Campbell and playing with the likes of Nigel Spackman and Kerry Dxion and against David Platt and Paul GascoigneJohn Bumstead or Johnny B as he was affectionately known by the supporters, played for Chelsea from 1978 until 1991, making 409 appearances, the 9th highest appearance maker for Chelsea and scoring 44 goals. There are few Chelsea players who have experienced the rollercoaster of what it was like to play for Chelsea in that 13 year period of the doldrums of Division Two; near relegation to Division Three; promotion to Division One; winning the Full Members Cup; relegation back to Division Two via a play off and then promotion again the next season with a record number of points. Throughout it all he remained loyal to his boyhood club until being transferred to Charlton.Johnny B was the ultimate selfless team player, playing at the heart of Chelsea's midfield, doing the simple things very well and he hardly ever had a bad game for the club.He may have been small in stature but he was a steely competitor and his fearless, courageous challenges meant that injuries were a recurring theme throughout his career. He had an eye for goal and was an accomplished free kick taker with his last goal for Chelsea coming in a 3-2 victory over Spurs on December 1st 1990, the start of an unbeaten run against our North London rivals that was to last for 28 years. But perhaps he should best be remembered for the way he could shackle opposition flair players from the likes of Tony Currie to David Platt and Paul Gascoigne. If you were to sum John Bumstead up, I can think of no better description than understated excellence. We had the pleasure of interviewing ENZI over Zoom video! Colorado native and alternative-pop artist ENZI has released her new single “Time Flies” – available via all DSPs. Produced and co-written by frequent collaborators Bobby Campbell and Jeff Cohen (Macy Gray, Sugarland, The Band Perry), the song was also mastered by Nathan Dantzler (Niall Horan, Vince Gill, Lady A). “Time Flies” showcases ENZI's strength in creating powerful and catchy choruses while also perfectly encapsulating the feelings of anger and hopelessness all felt during the past year's lockdown. “Time Flies” is one of the most personal tracks I've written to date. In the last year, I struggled so much to find any motivation to just get out of bed. The crumbling world felt like it was crumbling all on top of me and it was completely paralyzing, emotionally and physically. After finally opening up to some others, I realized I was not alone. I wanted to write a song that encapsulated this feeling of total isolation, overwhelming apathy, and complete mental paralysis. I know they say “time flies when you're having fun!” But time also flies when you're mentally withdrawn. - ENZI “Time Flies” comes on the heels of ENZI's hometown live performance last weekend – her first since the pandemic – where she previewed the track to fans at Lost Lake Lounge in Denver alongside previous singles “Retrograde” and “Mad Chemistry.” Both tracks were met with critical acclaim from Refinery29, UPROXX, American Songwriter, BlackBook, Colorado Public Radio, Alternative Press, Westword, and more upon their release. Originally from Northern Colorado, ENZI recently moved to Nashville to pursue her studies in songwriting/music major at Belmont University. She released her debut single “Flipside” in 2018 and has since scored multiple syncs across MTV's original programming as well as support from iHeartRadio. She was awarded a top-five spot at KTCL 93.3's Big Gig in Colorado and she was also tapped to open the station's Not So Silent Night concert in 2019. With only a handful of singles to her name, ENZI has already shared stages with The Head and The Heart, Fitz and the Tantrums, Walk the Moon, and more – all before her junior year of college. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Clayton Beerman to look back at the 1991-92 season, with contributions from John Bumstead and Kerry Dixon.Chelsea entered the last season of Football League Division One with a new manager, Ian Porterfield, having parted ways with Bobby Campbell the season before.New signings included Vinnie Jones, Paul Elliot, Joe Allon and Tony Cascarino. But it was to be another disappointing season, finishing 14th, below Wimbledon but above Spurs in 15th! Top scorer was Denis Wise, top appearance maker was Graeme Le Saux but the stand out and Player of the Year was Paul Elliot a graceful and commanding presence at the back.Ian Porterfield bought a lot of players; was tactically and technically astute and brought in new training methods but was perhaps too inexperienced to manage the big egos and was, basically, too nice. Chelsea's form was erratic; from the poor to the brilliant to the poor. There was a sense of drifting this season; a lot of players bought but we lost some good ones too; including a bona fide Chelsea legend. Kerry Dixon left the club at the end of the season, having scored 193 goals and nine short of Bobby Tambling's record. In his final Chelsea season he finished with just 5 goals in 39 appearances.1991-92 was a nothing season that fizzled out after the Cup exit to Sunderland (again) in the quarter-final. There was a bit of a revolving door feeling – where would it go – introduce more of the talented youth waiting in the wings or bring in some better quality players? With the issue of the future of Stamford Bridge resolved there was also talk of building a new stadium...To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine, look back at the 1988-89 season. With Chelsea having been relegated via a play off the previous season, Chelsea supporters mood was darkened further by an FA imposed terrace ban for the first 6 matches of the new season. The lack of vocal home support seemed to affect Bobby Campbell's charges with a miserable start of 3 points in the first 6 games leaving them in 20th. But a stroke of luck in a 2-0 win away to Leeds United turned the season around.Chelsea embarked on a run of 27 games unbeaten to win the Division Two title with a record 99 points, scoring 96 goals with a three pronged attack of Kerry Dixon, Gordon Durie and Kevin Wilson. Graham Roberts had come in to Captain the side, add some steel and score a remarkable 17 goals from midfield, 12 of them penalties and was assisted by the experienced Peter Nicholas. All in all a very memorable season and as ever, never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Mark and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with Colin Pates, John Bumstead and Kerry Dixon. Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine. After a disappointing mid-table finish to the previous season, Chelsea supporter's hopes were not high, but little did they know what was in store for the 1987-88 season. If seeing Nigel Spackman and David Speedie leave wasn't bad enough, the performances on the pitch were even worse. Appalling form and injuries to key players saw Chelsea sleep walk toward relegation. But surely they were too good to go down?Unfortunately, even after the sacking of John Hollins and more important Ernie Walley, Bobby Campbell's Chelsea finished in 18th which meant they had to play-off to remain in Division One. A hugely controversial 1-0 win in the home leg against Middlesbrough was not enough to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the 1st leg and the unthinkable happened. Chelsea would be the 'Boys in Blue in Division Two' once again.Never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Mark and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with Colin Pates, John Bumstead, Kerry Dixon and Paul Canoville. You know how there's that kid from your neighbourhood who grew up to go and amazingly crazy things? For me, Bobby is one of those. This conversation was one that has been scheduled and re: scheduled again throughout time and it felt great to finally getting around to have this kōrero (talk). Through our conversation we explore narratives of lineage (whakapapa), how growing up influences your imagination and the utter strength of femininity and how it can influence the world. This story of how we can learn to own our uniqueness as a loner is a freeing conversation. We, of course, touch on the arts; both fashion and film AND the interesting adventure of a Pā boy coming out to claim his sexuality. One for every ear.

Playing for Team Human today is Juho Makkonen, co-founder of Sharetribe.Juho is working on a vision of the “sharing economy” where people share value with one another instead of seeing it get syphoned off by companies like Uber and Airbnb. Playing for Team Human today is designer, technology historian, and author of the new book Architectural Intelligence, Professor Molly Wright Steenson. Molly and Douglas share a wide-ranging conversation that begins by looking at the “weirdness” of AI. Molly’s background in architecture and history offers listeners a unique grounding of digital in the physical. Check out Molly’s new book Architectural Intelligence and her longstanding website girlwonder.com. Playing for Team Human today is Jeremy Lent, author of The Patterning Instinct. Lent’s expansive research looks at the variety of ways cultures throughout history have patterned meaning into the cosmos. In excavating these patterns, Lent shares how humans might retrieve those metaphors that amplify altruism and shared intentionality. Together, Rushkoff and Lent explore the question of what makes humans unique and how we might leverage our patterning instinct to foster a future characterized by deeper connection rather than alienation. Douglas begins today’s show with a monologue on cultural immunity. He questions the impulse to solve the problems of democracy by simply building better tech. How might we build resilience in people rather than just in our gadgets and algorithms? This show features intro and outro music thanks to Fugazi and Dischord Records. In this episode, we meet Suzanne having just “fed” her sourdough starter, a living culture of yeast and bacteria that is the essential element for her delicious and healthful breads. Instantly, the conversation is grounded to the hands-on daily work that makes Green Rabbit so special. Is it possible for the small farmer and local baker to maintain integrity and stewardship of the community in an increasingly extractive economy? Find out how Suzanne does it...Plus, in stark contrast to "Real People Doing Real Things," Rushkoff opens the show with a monologue on the idealism of bitcoin. Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Dan Silver and authors of 'Over Land & Sea - Chelsea FC in the Great War' Alex Churchill and Andrew Holmes. That’s now 7 Premier League defeats out of 12 and the decline in our fortunes seems irreversible right now. Can we really be facing a relegation battle? It is certainly relegation form. I for one saw signs of a much better performance against Stoke on Saturday and on another day Chelsea would have won but it just seems that we don’t know how to win football matches at the moment. But I genuinely believe that the rot will stop with Matic, Hazard and others looking more like the players we know and love. On the show tonight we’ll be asking what Chelsea has to do to actually win a football match and what’s wrong with Diego Costa? In part two we’ll be asking is it really the fans superb support for Jose Mourinho that is keeping the Special One in his job, and we’ll be saying thank you and RIP to Bobby Campbell, the former Chelsea manager who...
