The first animated series for James Gunn's DCU has concluded and we've got a lot thoughts. Mainly, why are we still coding disability as monstrous? Is David Zaslav running security in Pokolistan? What's the over-under on at least one student wanting to get freaky with a fish girl? Is Doctor Phosphorus the show's MVP? Today I have V. Castro and Johnny Compton on the show to discuss Gods and Monsters. They've both written stories that explore this combination of characters, so I thought they would be perfect guests to speak to our interest that dates back to antiquity. We discuss vampires and whether gods care about their existence. We chat about how good can't exist without evil, and we give a few of our favorite book recommendations so you can explore the combination of gods and monsters in story.

Here at the Frankencast, we've spent a lot of time talking about the Mother of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, but we haven't really talked much about the Father of Frankenstein, James Whale. It's high-time we remedied that, so here we are talking about the Academy Award winning fictional retelling of the last days of Whale's life. Join us as we talk about some heavy topics and pay tribute to the man who is at least partially responsible for the nearly endless supply of Frankenstein films that allows us to do this show. Spoiler Note: For anyone unspoiled, we discuss the end of the show from 1:18:50-1:21:01 - tread lightly! We did it, everyone - we made it to the end of season 7! As a reward, we get this pretty great finale. Bonnie continues to hunt everyone as they scramble to get into the Armory. With the help of Enzi making himself a target and some adorable little witch siphons, our team can get into the Armory to destroy the final Everlasting and (hopefully) avoid the mysterious evil entity. And yet, no one seems that urgent or concerned about the evil entity … huh. Stefan and Caroline finally work things out (and kick Ric to the curb). But it's not all happy! Damon makes the selfless decision to go into the vault and stays there after mysteriously hearing Elena's voice. Enzo follows, taking them on a new adventure, killing a lot of people for mysterious reasons. We also debrief about a season we haven't been particular fans of, and pitch how we would have fixed it. We also look ahead to season 8. Remember to rate, review, and share, brothers! They share their disappointment with the book and critique the author's writing style and character development. The episode concludes with a critique of the final battle scene and the unrealistic plan of the characters. The conversation methodically identifies the principal themes of the book, including the lack of consequences, unrealistic recovery, inconsequential death, confusing epilogue, change in Reed's behavior, desire for spicier scenes, mislabeling of books, disappointment with the series, and narration issues. Episode Synopsis: Is Valentine's Day an innocent holiday of cards, candies and flowers for twitterpated lovers, or is it an ancient pagan celebration with ties to blood, human sacrifice, and even…werewolves? We talk about this and much more, including: If Valentine's Day is a sex holiday, why do we begin celebrating it as children? Why is the figure head of this holy day an erotic pagan god, portrayed as a naked baby? Is the sex-crazed Olympic village the result of a spiritual carry over from ancient Greece? Does St. Valentine hold the true reason for celebrating this day, or is he just the Christian redressing of a more evil celebration? What does Lupercal and the founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus have to do with Valentine's Day? Who was King Lycaon, and was he the first werewolf? Is the root of Valentine's Day tied to a werewolf holy day of cannibalism that resembles rituals to Baal? "Ah, the '80s, a time when cinematic wonders unfolded on the silver screen. And among those treasures was the epic mythological adventure, 'Clash of the Titans.' This film, nestled in the heart of the decade, transported audiences into a world of gods, monsters, and heroes. At its helm was Perseus, the valiant son of Zeus, embarking on a perilous quest to rescue Princess Andromeda and confront the monstrous Kraken. This epic journey was a spectacle of groundbreaking visual effects, dazzling stop-motion creatures, and fantastical landscapes that ignited the imagination. From the majestic winged horse Pegasus to the daunting Medusa, 'Clash of the Titans' was a tapestry woven with mythical creatures and awe-inspiring legends. It epitomized the era's love for grand adventures and heroic feats. But beyond its fantastical elements, the heart of the film lay in Perseus' bravery and determination, resonating with audiences who cheered for the triumph of good over evil. The '80s were an era of cinematic innovation, and 'Clash of the Titans' stands tall as a testament to that era, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of fantasy films. It's a timeless journey, a clash of titans indeed, where mortals and gods intertwined in an epic struggle, captivating our hearts and imaginations for generations to come."If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. “If they want a monster so badly, they ought to be provided by one.” ― Margaret AtwoodTheir monster is Trump. He is the entire economy of the media machine. Without him, whole news networks would die, social media would become stagnant, and, more importantly, there would be no named evil for the New Puritans to unite in fear and hatred against.Their God is Barack Obama. Yes, that's right. We're caught in a clash of the titans that involves two movements, largely built and cultivated online, that now define two paths forward for America. Obama's 1984-like dystopia or Trump's populist revolt against monopolistic power at the top, not unlike Teddy Roosevelt driving a spike through the Gilded Age.Trump is, without a doubt, and these trials prove it, the man in the arena. Jerome and Brian are back with another 90's Brendan Fraser flick that also features Universal Monsters in a non-Universal film. Funny how that works. The film is Gods and Monsters from 1998 which had awards acclaim at the time. It's a fictionalized account of the final days of famous director James Whale. Was it a 'whale' of a time? Let's find out.

Gods and Monsters is a 1998 period drama film that recounts the partly fictionalized last days of the life of film director James Whale, whose experience of war in World War I is a central theme, along with his legacy of directing cinema classics like Frankenstein (1931), The Dark Old House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and Show Boat (1936). The film stars Ian McKellen, Brendan Fraser, Lynn Redgrave, Lolita Davidovich, and David Dukes. An international co-production between the United Kingdom and the United States, the film is written and directed by Bill Condon, based on Christopher Bram's 1995 novel Father of Frankenstein. Clive Barker served as executive producer. The Agents of Fandom are joined by a friend of the show, Comicbook.com Legend, Matthew Aguilar. We take look at the brand-new slate for DC Studios' Chapter One: Gods And Monsters
James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the new DC Universe slate that crosses over into film, TV, animation, and video games. Before getting to the new universe, four projects are set to debut in 2023 - Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. During the events of The Flash, the universe is rebooted, forever altering the history and future of the DC universe. The new continuity begins with Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters! It currently features ten projects that span film, television, and animation. Beginning sometime in 2024, we'll be introduced to new characters from the Creature Commandos, and previously established characters like Amanda Waller and Peacemaker in Waller, a live-action series set between the events of Peacemaker Season 1 and Season 2. The following year, we'll meet this universe's new Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy, a feature film written by James Gunn, that introduces us to a Superman who's balancing his Kryptonian heritage and human upbringing in a world where true goodness is considered old-fashioned. In the original series Lanterns, space cops Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart make a discovery in Sector 2814 that leads to a much bigger DC event. For the first time, characters from the Wildstorm imprint will be making their cinematic debut in The Authority, a group of morally gray heroes who are dissatisfied with the world and decide to take matters into their own hands to fix it. Before Wonder Woman's birth, Paradise Lost will explore all the darkness, drama, and political intrigue behind this society of only women. In The Brave and the Bold, we will meet the new Batman and his sidekick, Robin, who also happens to be his real son, Damian Wayne. This feature will also introduce various members of the bat family into the DC universe. Booster Gold, an original series, introduces us to Michael Jon Carter, a loser from the future dealing with imposter syndrome who discovers a way to travel to our time to become a superhero. Based on Tom King's award-winning comic book run, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow introduces us to Kara Zor-el, Superman's cousin, who spent over a decade surviving on a remnant of Krypton and witnessing everyone around her perish. When she comes to Earth, she's a bit jaded and broken. Finally, Swamp Thing will explore the darker elements of the DC universe in this intriguing horror story. In a separate DC Elseworlds continuity, The Batman - Part II will debut in theatres on October 3, 2025, and will continue the story set up by Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson. Joker: Folie a Deux continues the story of Arthur Fleck's turn to the dark side and is joined by Harley Quinn.
