Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to illustrator & cartoonist Drew Friedman, son of the great writer, screenwriter and author, Bruce Jay Friedman. Known for his pop culture writing, including screenplays like Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor and Doctor Detroit, Bruce Jay was part of the well-heeled Manhattan literary, pop culture and social scene, with his own table at the once-fashionable & paparazzi friendly Elaine's restaurant in the 70s and 80s. Bruce Jay Friendman was also a novelist with books like The Lonely Guy (which became a film with Charles Grodin and Steve Martin) & as well as a playwright for productions like Scuba Duba &Steambath which became a PBS production in 1973. This literati scene rubbed off on Drew who was always obsessed with drawing and cartoons from a very early age. This passion led to a career as a cartoonist for magazines like The New Yorker, National Lampoon, Spy, Newsweek and many more. In turn, this led to caricature books & illustrations with titles like Old Jewish Comedians, Maverix and Lunatix: Icons of underground Comics and All The Presidents. Drew Friedman became famous for his lifelike if sometimes slightly demented images of B-movie actor Tor Johnson, public access television host Joe Franklin, comedian Ernie Kovacs (ahem) and Groucho Marx and many more. The aptly named Drew Friedman is our guest this week because this is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. This one is fascinating. Take a listen.

Episode 433: “Waiting for a Paar to Fall” Part 1 of Winter Series 2024: “Late Night With Dave Bledsoe” This week Host Dave Bledsoe drunkenly stumbles out of the studio bathroom shouting “Heeeeere's Davey!” with his pants around his ankles as a joke. (Again) On the show this week we kick off our Winter Series for 2024 with the B.C. era of late night TV talk. (Before Carson) Along the way we are forced to listen to an old man wax nostalgic about TV sign-offs from his childhood. (Honestly, we are looking for a home for Dave, a cheap one.) Then we dive right into the history of television talk shows. We hear about Joe Franklin, the “Ur” Late Night Host who essentially created the format before moving on to NBC's first incarnation of an iconic show with an iconic host. (Well, TWO iconic hosts actually) and how they created a television show that has been on the air over half a century. (Before being utterly ruined by Jay Leno.). Our Sponsor this week is Panelist R Us, in a bind because your guest canceled at the last minute? Grab a D Lister from Panelist R Us. Host Sonari Glinton explores the great kettlebell shortage of 2020, as closed gyms led to unprecedented demand for home exercise equipment. We learn how manufacturing overseas made kettlebells difficult to get, and how bringing the manufacturing to the U.S. and supply chain diversification provided ways to meet the demand, but were far from simple solutions. In this episode we meet Jennifer Lau, co-owner of FitSquad who experienced the kettlebell demand firsthand. At the same time, Jay Perkins, the co-founder of Kettlebell Kings saw his supply of overseas manufactured kettlebells stall when demand was at its highest. We go to Viet Nam to meet Dinh Tien Vu, Director of Vietnam CastIron who was able to manufacture kettlebells in his foundry while Chinese factories were shut down. And we talk to Joe Franklin of USA-Iron, who was able to make kettlebells quickly by producing domestically in the USA.Disclaimers:The guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. Today's podcast topic is the troubling issue of physical self-harm among children. Dr. Donald Greydanus writes in the Psychiatric Times that “deliberate self-harm is a behavior in which a person commits an act with the purpose of physically harming (themselves) with or without a real intent of suicide.” Self-harm is an effort to cope with unmanageable emotional pain. While the effort might be maladaptive, it is also effective. Dr. Joe Franklin writes, “One of the most common reasons individuals give for injuring themselves is that it reduces emotional pain. That may be because the physical pain relief that follows a self-injury event, (the relief when the physical pain is over), basically tricks the brain into perceiving relief for emotional pain, too”. Unfortunately, that relief is temporary and does nothing to ameliorate the underlying issues that led to self-harm in the first place. A vicious cycle can follow, with self-loathing, judgement from others and an increase in depression and anxiety. In fact, the risk for eventual suicide increases following each subsequent incident of self-harm. In this episode, our guest is with Daniela Ruiz-Cedeno, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at The Guidance Center's San Pedro Clinic. Daniela is our certified lead in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT. DBT is a mental health treatment developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan from the University of Washington, which has been shown to be highly effective with chronically suicidal clients and those who have eating or substance abuse disorders or engage in self-injurious behaviors. Daniela treats our highest crisis clients and trains her peers in the provision of DBT care. Owen Kline is a New York based director, actor, screenwriter and cartoonist, who is best known for his role as Frank Berkman in The Squid And The Whale (2005). From early high school through his 20s, Owen has been spitting out an endless slew of self-generated DIY media including: comic books, sardonic fanzines and small joke books, novelty records and film shorts, including the delirious Jazzy for Joe (2014) starring the late talk show legend Joe Franklin as himself raising an abandoned child found on his doorstep. Owen's Fowl Play (2013), about a low-rent gang of aspiring cockfighters in Flushing, Queens, was selected by Josh & Benny Safdie for their Le Cinema Club repertory program in 2017. His forthcoming feature length directorial debut is about a young cartoonist trapped in a self-destructive dream world of his own making. The film which is also penned by Owen is titled Two Against Nature, and is produced by the Safdie Brothers and will be released by A24 films in the near future. Owen can be heard every Friday at 4 on his KPISS.FM radio show Run ‘Em Off.
Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who've made, and been made, by trainers. We'll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak. Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world's biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It's also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it's a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion. The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you'll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who've played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research. Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith. Episode 9 Cast: Rob . . . . . Wilf Scolding Phil . . . . . Trevor White Waitress . . . . .
