In this episode of the Wisdom Keeper podcast, I'm delighted to be joined by Walter Cruttenden, researcher, mystic, author, and entrepreneur. Walter takes us on his heroic journey to scientifically verify accounts from ancient Indian and Greek mystical sources about the Great Year, the extensive 24,000-year cycle of the cosmos in which human consciousness and civilizations ebb and flow. We discuss a binary star system, what compels him to go beyond mainstream narratives, how these lost cycles of time affect us here on Earth, and what will be revealed as our collective consciousness awakens from prolonged amnesia. If you ever wanted to learn where we are now, and where we are going using this star map, listen to this conversation, for the future lies in understanding our past. BIO Walter Cruttenden is an author and researcher working at the intersection of ancient wisdom, modern science, and human consciousness. His Binary Research Institute, based on the work of Sri Yukteswar, challenges the conventional paradigm of what caused the fall of many ancient civilizations, and why we have seen a rise in consciousness since the Renaissance. Cruttenden is the author of the book “Lost Star of Myth and Time,” and documentary, “The Great Year”, narrated by James Earl Jones, which looks at the evidence for a stellar companion and its likely influence on Earth's ancient past and possible future. His talks blend scientific inquiry with spiritual wisdom, offering a holistic perspective on the nature of reality and our interconnectedness with the cosmos. Lynn Bell: Astrology, Redemption, and the Aquarian Age of Revolutionary Change. Ep. 18 In this episode of the Wisdom Keeper podcast, I'm delighted to host master astrologer Lynn Bell, whom I affectionately call the Oracle. Lynn and I take a skeptic's approach to understanding the mechanism underlying astrology, asking how the soul and cosmos interact, and how studying historical patterns, both above and below, can lead us to redemption. Finally, Lynn gives us an astro-forecast for 2024 including the highly anticipated transit of Pluto into Aquarius this November, coinciding with the US elections. The last time this transit took place ushered in the American and French Revolutions. You'll want to heed the Oracle's advice on how to prepare to meet this turning point. In this episode Lynn Bell and I discuss: - How a challenge to her eyesight in childhood, became an opportunity to develop a deeper vision and more attuned relationship with the world. - How we can look back on our personal and collective history and patterns to predict future outcomes. - Because every pattern repeats itself in cycles of time, we can always have a chance at repair or redemption. - How the psyche or soul and the cosmos or planetary alignments interact. - How astrology involves being attuned to the environment, and what the moment is presenting, so that we can skillfully choose how to respond. - The signature of the outgoing Piscean age and the incoming Aquarian age. - How to purposefully re-interpret and work with the challenges of our age such as misinformation, AI, socio-political division, civil unrest, and structural collapse. - The Astro forecast for 2024 including the anticipated transition of Pluto into Aquarius in November during the US election, and the American and French Revolutions that transpired the last time this transit occurred. - Lynn's parting message of tolerance for cognitive dissonance, remembering our common humanity, and staying in the vibration of compassion over fear. Conversation starts @ 5:47 Hermes Trismegistus was believed to be one of the wise men of his time, and a study of his texts reveals, not a general philosophy, but a spiritual path for initiates who seek to achieve gnosis by direct acquaintance of the true nature of reality as we experience it. Dr. Wouter Hanegraaff begins this analysis by guiding us into the four-core dimension of his book, Hermeticism, spirituality, historical imagination, and altered states of knowledge. All of this knowledge circulated through small groups of people beginning in the first century A.D. Wouter explains how he landed a position as The University of Amsterdam chair of Hermeticism, and then began to “map” the field of esoterism, the two poles of his academic interests are Hermeticism and esotericism. We discuss the nature of esotericism, rejected forms of knowledge, monotheism and exclusion, the shadow of the collective, Isaac Newton's heresy, Western exclusion, nonduality, the experiential nature of spiritual practice, Diotima - the female visionary who taught Socrates, drugs in the ancient world, The East and the irrational, academic ideological orientation to Greek as rational, misunderstanding and misinterpretation of antiquity, gender, the spiritual nature of rebirth, life and death, immortality and “The Flip,” shoutout to Miles Neale and Jeff Kripal, music and the cosmos, tones and chanting, initiation, apprenticeship, magic, therapy, and more. Eric pulls back the curtain on his upcoming book Unseen Beings where he traces the root cause of the break down of our civilization to the prevalence of anthropocentrism. Are human beings really at the center of it all, seemingly in control of a mechanistic world? Are we suffering the loss of enchantment? While people's movement across the planet strive for greater equity and inclusivity, Erik makes a bolder leap forward to suggest that our expanding consciousness must begin to include the rights of plants, spirits, and the earth herself. This conversation proposes an inspiring innovation that combines spiritual practice and activism. Erik Jampa Andersson, founder and director of Shrimala, is a scholar practitioner of Sowa Rigpa, colloquially known as Tibetan Medicine, based in London. He is a graduate of the Shang Shung Institute of Tibetan Medicine, and one of a rare and distinguished members of a small cohort of Westerners who has studied the four classical medical tantras. While pursuing a degree in religious studies at Naropa University, he was inspired to change course and enroll in a five-year Tibetan Medicine program at the Shang Shung Institute, in which he was trained extensively under notable senior physicians including Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo, Dr. Namgyal Tsering, Dr. Nyima Tsering, and other Sowa Rigpa experts in America and Asia. In this episode of the Wisdom Keeper Podcast I'm delighted to host Freddy Silva one of the worlds foremost experts on ancient civilizations, crop circles, and the use of sacred monolithic sites and structures for transformations in human consciousness. Freddy leads us on a journey to rewrite history gathering clues from diverse cultural sources that point to an ancient, high civilization lost in last ice-age, but far older and more advanced than our current, mainstream picture of the world would suggest. What this ancient pre-diluvian, sea fearing civilization knew about the cosmos and of the psyche is nothing short of staggering, and anyone with interest in esoteric wisdom and initiatory rites will be sure to enjoy this conversation. Freddy Silva is a bestselling author, and leading researcher of ancient civilizations, restricted history, sacred structures, and their interaction with consciousness. He is also the leading expert on crop circles and leads pilgrimages to sacred sites in England, France, Egypt, Portugal, Yucatan, Peru/Bolivia, and Scotland. Freddy has produced thirteen documentaries and published seven books in six languages, among them The Missing Lands, The Divine Blue Print, the Lost Art of Resurrection, and his most recent release Scotland's Hidden Sacred Past. His website is https://www.invisibletemple.com/ Freddy and I discuss his: Departure from corporate advertising to follow an inner call to study crop circles and other mysteries. Learning to trust what he calls “the management” - unseen spirit guides of alternate dimensions that aid him in his research and quest. Theory of an ancient, lost civilization of prehistory and its sacred wisdom of navigating the cosmos and the soul. Attempt to thread together myths and prophesies found across cultures about a lost, pre-diluvian sea faring civilization possessing high art and technology. Fascinating common accounts of the “shinning one's” or the “people of the serpent“ who may have taught the Mayans and Egyptians, and cultures as diverse as Armenia, India, Japan, Scotland and Easter Island.  The cataclysmic impact of a meteor around 10,500 BCE, its ensuing effects of sea level rise, and relationship to the universal presence of flood myths throughout culture. Freddy responds to his critics of the ancient civilization hypothesis. The connection between sacred monolithic sites, astrological positions, and ritual initiations. The Maiden's Cave in Scotland and its ritual use for a rite-of-passage leading to resurrection of the soul. In the lead up to our epic Buddhist pilgrimage to Nepal and India in October 2022 led by Tibetan Master Geshe Tenzin Zopa I wanted to curate a series of interviews with scholars and guides to help shed light on the ancient practice of journeying to scared sites and its relevance to a post pandemic world. Nat Geo has recently said pilgrimage will be the next travel trend after Covid as people search for new meaning to help restore their lives. I could not be more delighted in this, our inaugural episode of the Wisdom Keeper Podcast, to host mythologist and multi award winning author Phil Cousineau. PHIL COUSINEAU is prolific writer and filmmaker, teacher and editor, lecturer and travel leader, storyteller and TV host. His fascination with the art, literature, and history of culture has taken him from Michigan to Marrakesh, Iceland to the Amazon, in a worldwide search for what the ancients called the “soul of the world.” With more than 35 books and 15 scriptwriting credits to his name, the “omnipresent influence of myth in modern life” is a thread that runs through all of his work. His books include Stoking the Creative Fires, Once and Future Myths, The Art of Pilgrimage, The Hero's Journey, Wordcatcher, The Painted Word, The Oldest Story in the World, The Book of Roads, and The Accidental Aphorist. Phil Cousineau's website: https://www.philcousineau.net Phil and I Discuss: The purpose of pilgrimage from its ancient roots to modern times The power of physical places whether they be sacred or secular sites The importance of reconnecting, remembering, and revitalizing our lives after centuries of fragmentation and disconnection from spirit The Long Discussion, Phil's approach to taking the art of conversation on a deep into the heart of vulnerability. Phil also describes contemplation on the road, how a multi sensory experience can be internalized through intention and attention. Phil discusses his relationship with his mentor Joseph Campbell, and the need to innovate the epic hero's journey from a mostly male rite of passage to a more collective, inclusive myth. We discuss the difference between taking from and giving back when on pilgrimage The Wisdom Keeper Podcast is available on Apple podcasts, Google Podcasts, Youtube and Spotify. In this episode I’m joined by Dr Miles Neale Buddhist psychotherapist and author of Gradual Awakening. When Dr Neale contacted me to offering appear on the podcast, I was intrigued by his impressive list of mentors - including Columbia University’s Professor Robert Thurman and Geshe Tenzin Zopa. Miles recounts how an affluent but disturbed childhood with alcoholic parents and a narcissistic father drove him to self harm and dissatisfaction, and how he found solace and healing in religious practice and a series of influential mentors. Miles tells a remarkable story of a supernatural experience with a reincarnated child master, a ‘tulku’. Miles goes on to addresses the conflicts between the view of his Western therapeutic training, which prizes healthy parental attachment, and his religious affiliation with Tibetan Buddhism, in which specially chosen boys as young as three years old are removed from their homes to undergo rigorous training to become avatars of their lineage tradition. Miles discusses the cultural and religious context of this practice, and the possible developmental impacts on the young boys. Miles reveals the secrets to being a good mentee, discusses the ups and downs of his relationships with his own mentors, and candidly discusses his own path as a practicing Buddhist and professional therapist. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/ep69-dr-miles-neale-buddhas-tulkus-narcissists/ Audio version of this podcast also available on iTunes and Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast’. … Topics Include: 0:00 - Intro 1:24 - Miles’ childhood with alcoholic parents and a narcissistic father 7:32 - Consequences of being raised by addicts and a narcissist 22:51 - How Miles was able to received healthy reparenting from his mentors 29:01 - Miles discusses the developmental consequences of the tulku system in young boys 31:58 - Miles’ supernatural experience with a young tulku 35:16 - The cultural and religious context of removing young tulkus from the family home 44:59 - Does the cultural and religious context shield the child from developmental damage? 51:08 - Miles asks Steve why he asked about tulkus 54:17 - The role of mentorship and apprenticeship in human flourishing 59:00 - What makes Miles such a good mentee? 1:03:28 - Miles’ 20 year mentorship under Dr Joe Loizzo 1:11:33 - Miles’ schism with Joe Loizzo 1:15:21 - Why Miles’ and Joe’s relationship ruptured 1:18:36 - Miles’ peer relationship with Geshe Tenzin Zopa 1:21:57 - A sense of coronation at Miles’ book launch 1:26:20 - Miles’ relationship with Professor Robert Thurman 1:34:22 - Negative experiences with Geshe Michael Roach community … To find out more about Miles, visit: - https://www.milesneale.com/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - http://www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi’ by Steve James

Week 2 (or 3) of this great global experiment in social isolation has been throwing up all sorts of shadow aspects in our homes and in our lives. I have personally found myself staring into some of my most punitive, frustrating, and angry patterns as a lack of distraction brings little escape! Social isolation, lack of exercise, and financial uncertainty are almost certainly going to lead to deteriorating mental health around the world.  And with this likely to be a medium term feature in our lives, it's important we get real with it and learn how to do with our shadow aspects. This week, fan-favourite and official coiner of the term "McMindfulness" - Dr. Miles Neale - comes back on the show to talk about how the pandemic meets all criteria of trauma, what impact that is having on our nervous systems, and how to navigate this most giant of hero's journeys we have each been initiated into in our own way. Dr. Miles Neale is a contemplative psychotherapist based in New York and one of the leading voices of the current generation of Buddhist teachers. Miles coined the term "McMindfulness," to address the problem we have in society of "cherry-picked teachings from ancient, mostly threatened, wisdom cultures and mass-marketed them as consumerist goods.” While there are certainly benefits to providing soft-entry points, we're ultimately diluting teachings and robbing ourselves of a deeper spiritual experience. His book, Gradual Awakening, provides a practical training manual of 30 ancient contemplative insights and meditative practices drawn from the Tibetan Buddhist Path. He makes it accessible for the Western mind, while at the same time, staying true to the ancient teachings and practices. In this week’s conversation we went explored: The problem of McMindfulness Why practicing certain things doesn’t make sense until you prepare yourself before How to organise your spiritual practice effectively Core principles to orient your life around Transcendance vs Embodiment - why both are needed A map that guarantees progress Favourite Quote: “In other words, transcendence isn’t the destination but a necessary stop to unburden fixation, so we can return to ordinary life with open minds and warmer hearts. Or, as Godwin put it, “Breaking out is only as important as how we break back in.”

For too many of us, our first foray into the world of spirituality comes after experiencing a deluge of unhappiness: depression, addiction, and all of the other destructive side effects that accompany a troubled mind. That was certainly how it all went down for our guest, Dr. Miles Neale – but a trip to India at the age of 20 and an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism changed the way he experienced the world, slowly but surely. Dr. Miles Neale is among the leading voices of the current generation of Buddhist teachers, a forerunner in the emerging field of contemplative psychotherapy, and the author of Gradual Awakening: The Tibetan Buddhist Path of Becoming Fully Human. For the last twenty years, he has trained in an authentic lineage of Tibetan Buddhism transmitted down from His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama to preeminent American Buddhist scholar Professor Robert Thurman to pioneering contemplative psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Loizzo. But Dr. Neale adds a unique twist to these teachings, combining them with traditional psychotherapy to create a reproducible curriculum that anyone can follow. Dr. Neale’s curriculum doesn’t result in a spontaneous, life-changing breakthrough. Instead, it offers something better: It offers us the ability to experience small, incremental breakthroughs that help us mature mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. There is no get-rich-quick scheme for a rich and fulfilling life – but it is possible for anyone to achieve.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Dr. Neale grew up wealthy and unhappy – but that all changed after a transformative trip to India The epidemic of depression that’s faced our country and world for most of the modern age, and that keeps getting worse Combining Tibetan Buddhism with traditional psychotherapy to create something new entirely The critical importance of finding your mentors (for the vast majority of people) How the movement towards the use of psychedelics and psychotropics fits into the rubric of spontaneous enlightenment – and why this isn’t enough for a lasting transformation The idiot’s guide to Tibetan Buddhism Experiencing the state of radical altruism (and what it is) What you need to know about Lam Rim and the how the Dalai Lama lineage plays into it The spiritually destructive impact of modern materialism, an inherently nihilistic way of living that’s causing us to devolve and waste our life A comprehensive view of karma, both good and bad   More about this episode. With Sounds True, Miles has published Gradual Awakening: The Tibetan Buddhist Path of Becoming Fully Human. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Miles about Lam Rim, the Tibetan Buddhist framework for moving into enlightened awakening step by measured step. They discuss the difference between gradually awakening and coming to enlightenment in a sudden burst, as well as the potential interplay between the two. Miles also leads Tami and the audience in a seven-step mentor bonding visualization that takes advantage of the mind's capacity to create a "flight simulator" for felt experience. Finally, Miles and Tami talk about the need to re-embrace religion and ritual in order to transcend the "cinderblock civilization" of materialism and nihilism. (69 minutes) Tami's Takeaway When Miles led us through a brief version of the mentor-bonding process that he teaches, I was surprised by who showed up in my mind's eye. It was not a spiritual mentor, business mentor, or a psychological guide, but someone who has recently begun helping me become physically fit. This underscored for me how many different dimensions there are to mentorship, as well as how important it is to be utterly open to receiving help from a surprising source.

In this episode we go deep into what Miles calls the “sickness of paradigm” that he believes is plaguing our modern cultures. We explore whether spirituality has become a necessary medicine for our current crises, what may help us wake up a sense of interconnectivity, and the dilemmas presented to us by the trend towards watered-down meditation practices, which he has termed “McMindfulness”. Miles presents us with the possibility that all human beings have the potential to awaken if they are willing to walk the gradual steps of the heroes journey.

Gradual Awakening with Miles Neale The world may be on the verge of global crisis. The economic, political, ecological and environmental landscapes are at the tipping point. Humanity appears confused and unaware in search of answers. As western culture embraces traditional practices favoured by many religious pursuits people jump on the trends of the likes of meditation and mindfulness yet equally sceptical of spiritual paths. In this conversation with Miles Neale, author of Gradual Awakening, we go beyond the surface and typical mindfulness talk into a deeper look at the current state of humanity. We explore the opportunities for humanity to experience an awakening - understanding mindfulness, wisdom and virtue as we attempt to overthrow of the nihilism, hedonism, and materialism that are threatening our planet. Enjoy! Guest Bio Dr Miles Neale is among the leading voices of the current generation of Buddhist teachers and a forerunner in the emerging field of contemplative psychotherapy. He is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, international speaker, and faculty member of Tibet House US and Weill Cornell Medical College.
