"The StarWell Foundation" is an audio drama set in a city of Super Heroes. Through the Foundation, children make requests to meet famous athletes, movie stars, or even their favorite heroes. But the kids have started to request something new: they want to meet their favorite villains and it's up to the newly promoted intern Meredith Dare to make their dreams come true.   This is episode 1 of the pilot season. Our friend and frequent guest host Colin planted the idea in my head a few years ago to produce a radio play and I’ve held onto the idea ever since. It wasn’t until I happened upon this gem of the internet on tumblr titled “The Villain Wrangler” that inspired me to interpret my own world around that terrific and devious concept. Our story today is about a tiny person joining a family as a toddler instead of as a newborn baby, in a foster care or adoption situation. Foster care and adoption can look so many different ways and this story depicts just one way it might look (from the perspective of a sweet little hamster, naturally). My hope is the story can convey some of the many feelings that family members experience during such a time and can spark a conversation about how families can grow. In this episode I'm talking about the things I wish I knew about before I started cross stitching. Some of them might seem quite obvious but if you are a beginner these may be quite new to you.  This months comments from you: @trufflemoo via Instagram commented; "I'm an accountant by day and a cross stitcher by night. It's a great way to unwind. I love using my creative side to make new designs and in the process of opening up an Etsy shop to see if other people like them too!" The 7 Things 1. Not to pull so hard when you are making your "X". 2. That there are different counts of aida and what this means. 3. To stitch contrasting colours of aida and thread on 16 count or higher aida. 4. That you can buy cross stitch pattern software. 5. That thread conditioner existed. 6. That needle minders were actually a valuable addition to my supplies (and a pretty one too!)   7. You can use a trick to cut your thread to the correct lengths. Pattern of the month This month's pattern is from Country Magic Stitch on Etsy and is 2 patterns in 1 download; "But First Coffee" and "But First Tea". It is a huge, black coffee cup with a bunch of flowers in and it has those 2 quotes on the mug. it uses 29 DMC colours and if stitched on 14 count aida it measures 10 x 10.4 inches. This pattern gives me a Gilmore Girls feeling and is one I want to stitch myself for the kitchen. In this episode I share some of my favourite hints and tips around cross stitching and share my new pattern of the week.  Hints and Tips To snip your thread to the length you need, measure it from the tips of your fingers to your elbow (or for a quick way to snip a full skein in one go watch the video in this blog post). Don't pull your thread to tight when makings your "X". Snip off your loose thread at the back as you are stitching. Stitch in natural light if you can or next to a lamp. Take your hoop off your work in between stitching. Iron your finished piece right side down on a towel on your ironing board. Use a needle minder and drawstring bag to keep your needle and work safe. You can buy drawstring bags and needle minders in my supply section of the website. You can view even more hints and tips in this blog post. Pattern Of The Week My pattern of the week this week is my Happy Halloween pattern. This is a great pattern to stitch this week because you should be able to finish it before Halloween. It is full of witches hats, pumpkins, skulls and a little dangling spider. It costs £5.40 if you are in the EU and if stitched onto 14 count aida it fits perfectly in a 7 inch hoop. In this episode I share what we are stitching this week in the Christmas Stitch Along, I talk about making mistakes in your cross stitch and how to fix them and I share, not a pattern of the week but a book of the week! The Stitch Along This week we are up to week 3 of the stitch along and we are stitching two of the reindeer and a tree and I have changed the pattern again. Only a tiny bit this time, I've just added a star to the top of the Christmas tree (I'm not sure why I didn't put one there in the first place actually). Stitching this pattern along with you all (instead of me stitching it first then sharing it) gives you a little insight into how my process works and how patterns can look so different when they are stitched than they do on paper/a screen. This is why I prefer to stitch the pattern myself before I share it with the world, because nine times out of ten I will change part of it. Making mistakes Mistakes are just part of life and they are definitely a part of cross stitch. Although cross stitch is pretty easy, it only takes one missed stitch or a little miscounting and it messes up your whole design. If you realise quite quickly that you have made a mistake then it can be quite quick to fix too. It's just a case of unpicking a few stitches using your needle and then you can simply carry on. However, if you make a mistake and don't realise until nearing the end of your work or even after you have finished (it's happened to me before) then it's not so quick to fix. You have two options here really; if it's just a small, almost unrecognisable mistake you can try and ignore it and hope no one points it out. Or, if you are a bit of a perfectionist like me, then you are going to have to unstitch and start again. You might not have to unstitch everything (phew!) just the section where it's gone a bit wrong. To do this I recommend using a seam ripper; you simply put the seam ripper under your stitches and glide it along. You can also use scissors to do this, just be careful you're not snipping any of the aida underneath. A fun little fact; when you are ripping your stitches, it's called "frogging" because you have to "rip-it, rip-it". I know, cheesy, but true. Once you have fixed your mistake, you may notice that some of the holes on your aida are now a lot bigger. Just move some of the weaving around the hole and try and put it back to its original shape if this is bothering you. Book of the week This week I share a cross stitch pattern book called "I got 99 Problems But A Stitch Aint One" by Genevieve Brading, owner and creator of Floss and Mischief, originally known for her stylish taxidermy cross stitch kits. If you are looking for modern and slightly naughty cross stitch patterns then this is the book for you. It has 20 patterns in it, some of my favourites being "What would Beyoncé do?" "Tequila o'clock" and my top one, "I'm sorry for what I did when I was hangry". These patterns all look like quick and easy ones and I will be stitching some up as Christmas presents this year. In this episode I share part one of a little glossary of cross stitch terms and share my new pattern of the week. It was very windy when I was recording this (the joys of the autumn/winter in Lincolnshire) but luckily, I don't think you can hear it in the recording. And, my 4-year-old was in the room with me during this episode as he was off school. But he was so quiet bless him and almost managed to stay quiet throughout the whole recording (minus one bout of the giggles). I let him have a little go at recording himself after I had finished. The stitch along started this week and we are stitching the very middle which is the "Deck The Halls" part. Lots of people have started and has already finished the first part! The Glossary Part 1 Aida – The most commonly used fabric for cross stitch, weaved evenly with holes in to make your "X". Aida band - A strip of aida which has a pretty border on; used for bookmarks/towel edging etc. Fabric Count - This refers to the amount of holes per inch (HPI) there is on the fabric. For example, on 14 count aida there are 14 holes per inch. Evenweave/linen - Another common fabric used in cross stitch, but much softer and more flexible. Waste canvas - A type of fabric you can use to stitch onto clothes etc. which dissolves in water. Tapestry needle - A blunt needle made specifically for cross stitch that comes in different sizes. For example, a size 24 can be used for 14 count aida or 28 count linen. Beading Needle - A needle used to stitch seed beads onto your design. Embroidery hoop - These are used to help keep your fabric taught and you can use them to frame your finished work too. They come in sizes from 2-12 inches and can be round or oval. They also come in a few materials; wooden, rubber (which are called flexi) and plastic (which are usually coloured). DMC have also recently released some cute animal shaped ones. Q-snaps - These seem very popular in America, but I don't see them being used much in the UK. They are plastic tubes that link together to hold your work while you are stitching. It has a fox, leaves, rain, an umbrella, birds, a wreath and some words; "Hello Autumn" and "I love Autumn". And of course, it has the best Autumn colours; yellows, oranges, browns and reds.
