The Ministry of Welcome: Creating Meaningful Experiences Through Hospitality With Nathan Woods and Mark SandenoIn this episode, Mark Sandeno sits down with Nathan Woods, a hospitality expert and founder of The Ministry of Welcome, to explore the transformative power of authentic hospitality in business and life. From driving truck parts to revolutionizing customer experiences at major brands, Nathan shares his journey and insights on creating meaningful connections through intentional welcome.Key Highlights:The Journey to Hospitality Nathan's origin story begins with driving truck parts in Eugene, Oregon, where he developed his vision statement: "Creating opportunities for others to experience joy." This led him to pursue a master's in hospitality and work with TrackTown USA managing VIP hospitality for the Olympic trials. His entrepreneurial journey continued as he co-founded Run Gum, growing it from a closet startup to achieving national retail distribution.Building Authentic Community Nathan emphasizes the importance of genuine customer engagement beyond transactions. At Run Gum, they achieved 30-40% revenue from email marketing by focusing on authentic connections. Their strategy included meaningful social media engagement and in-person events, always prioritizing treating customers as humans first, not just revenue sources.Revolutionizing Direct Booking for Bolt Farm TreehouseDuring his time with Bolt Farm Treehouse in Tennessee, Nathan helped transform their booking model from OTA dependence to achieving 99% direct bookings. Through implementing successful email and SMS marketing strategies, the business grew from 8 to 26 units while maintaining high occupancy rates. This transformation demonstrated the power of owning customer relationships. The Philosophy of Hospitality Nathan breaks down "philoxenia" - the Greek concept of loving strangers - and explains the crucial difference between service (what you have to do) and hospitality (what brings color to interactions). He discusses how this philosophy transforms business culture and customer experience, creating lasting impact through meaningful connections.Practical Implementation Tips Success in hospitality requires mapping the customer journey from first contact to post-experience, finding opportunities for personalization at key touchpoints, and creating memorable moments that evoke positive feelings. Nathan emphasizes the importance of caring for both customers and their families, sharing examples of thoughtful gestures that create lasting impressions.Notable Quotes: "Hospitality is not just about entertainment or hotels - it's about the posture of welcoming people to the space that you're in and being present with them." - Nathan Woods"People forget what you do or what you gave to them, but they'll never forget how you made them feel." - Nathan Woods (paraphrasing Maya Angelou)Resources Mentioned:nathanwoods.me - Nathan's websiteThe Ministry of Welcome newsletter"Unreasonable Hospitality" by Will GuidaraAbout Nathan Woods: Nathan Woods is a hospitality consultant and founder of The Ministry of Welcome. With experience ranging from Olympic event management to scaling direct-to-consumer brands, Nathan helps businesses transform their customer experiences through authentic hospitality practices. Welcome to week 25. One of my favourite things about the rise of TikTok is the fact that there's a community for anyone. Booktok, Wicktok, Runtok. It creates a massive opportunity for brands to partner with creators to run their accounts. I wanted to learn more about what that would look like which is why...This week I'm talking to Jessie Jacobson aka @growithjessie. In under 18 months, Jessie has grown her TikTok account to over 900k followers by showing people how to germinate fruits and vegetables. It's the perfect balance of education and entertainment. After seeing some success, she realized there was a bigger opportunity. Jessie started running TikTok accounts for really exciting consumer brands like Homesick and RunGum. Recently, she has turned her expertise into a consulting business helping other consumer brands build a sustainable presence on TikTok. Oh and one last thing, she just launched a course with the help of Maven. So, let's get to the good stuff. Here's my conversation with Jessie Jacobson.

This is the most profound and life-changing episode I've ever recorded. Honestly, you won't be the same person after listening to this. We've all heard it from time to time that if you want to be successful, you should be visualising your success. Picture yourself winning that business deal. See yourself building that app you've always wanted to build. Visualise yourself buying that house, driving that car, finding that dream partner - whatever it is, picture it. I know it sounds slightly out of the norm, but time and time again, I've found in my business journey that success leaves clues, and one of those clues is exactly that - visualise yourself succeeding, and you will succeed in whatever it is. Trust me, I've done it myself and it works. All. The. Time. And what better expert to have on the show today than none other than world-class athlete Nick Symmonds. He's 7x NCAA champion, 6x USA outdoor champion at 800m, 2x World Champion Finalist, 2008 & 2012 Olympian. Nick talks about his success on the track and how he used to visualise his races beforehand, which led to him being one of the most successful U.S runners of all time. During his career, he launched his own business, RunGum which he is still the CEO of today that has become hugely successful. I can't wait for you all to listen to today's show because honestly, it's the most profound show we've EVER recorded. Sit tight and listen intently - you won't be the same person after listening to this. Ready to get started on your app? If someone is a champion in their personal life, their work or sport, what are the thought processes that drive them? What do these people have in common? And what can we learn from them that we might be able to try in our own lives? The high achievers featured today have all overcome obstacles, challenged themselves and pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones to achieve a goal that was important to them. In a world where everyone is looking for the magic pill and the quick fix, these people are here to tell you that success doesn’t come overnight—but if you develop a champion’s mindset, you will find yourself on the path to success. My guest is Two-Time Track and Field Olympian and Run Gum CEO, Nick Symmonds. Many people have a mindset that “success” is some type of destination. Like, “IF I get this job, THEN I’ll be successful,” or, “If I get this time, or marry this person, or get this job… only then could I be a success.” We know, though, that success is not a destination, but an entire journey that Nick Symmonds epitomizes in the clearest way. He’s been to the Olympics - TWICE - and that alone certainly makes him a “success.” But, rest assured, he’s not done. In fact, as CEO of Run Gum, he’s just getting started. Today, we talk about the similarities in being a high-level athlete and a successful business entrepreneur. He discusses his fears, doubts and commitment to maintain a work/life balance.  We also talk about running. What does he miss most? When did he know it was time to retire? How has the sport changed?  Of course, we talk about his company and product, Run Gum - a no sugar, no calorie, gum that is the perfect and simple energy boost for athletes, business folks and anyone who needs a little caffeine boost without the GI distress of sugary gels and beverages. "I'm a gamer. And anyone who trained with me in my 12-year [professional] career would laugh when I say that I'm really bad in workouts. Because they used to say, 'I would kick your ass every single Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but I can't beat you in a race.' And it's true. I was really lazy in workouts but when it came time to race, especially if something mattered, I just could take it to that next level. Some sports psychologists would argue that that was my secret weapon—that I only dug deep maybe four or five times a season. I could give you a 90-percent effort, maybe even a 95-percent effort, but I really only dug deep the few times that it actually mattered, and that saved me both mentally and physically, and allowed me to have a much longer career." Two-time Olympian, six-time national champion, and 2013 world championships 800m silver medalist Nick Symmonds comes on the podcast for a candid conversation covering a wide range of topics. We discuss his retirement from track and field, his recent foray into marathon training and racing, and the similarities and differences that exist between the two pursuits. We also talk about entrepreneurship, the origin and mission of his company, Run Gum, reflect on his progression from decent college runner to world-class athlete, and dive into how he has dealt with pressure and overcoming nerves throughout his career. "The one commonality was that on both the 800m start line and on the marathon start line, the thought is, 'this is gonna hurt really bad.' And they do, in different ways, but they both really really hurt and there's no way around that," explains Symmonds. "But there's another aspect on the 800m start line that was, 'this matters.' That was extremely important for my career, my family. There's sometimes potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line. It matters—it's really important that you have a good showing. In the marathon, I was just doing it for myself. I wasn't doing it for sponsors or for money or for anybody else. I wanted to go prove to myself that I could run 26.2 miles. So it was a lot less pressure and pressure equals nerves in those kinds of situations. It was just fun." Also in this episode, Symmonds and I get into the sponsorship and marketing side of the sport, we attempt to unpack the antiquated ways of governing bodies, and talk about who—and what—is exciting him in running these days. Additionally, we look back at his relationship with coaches Frank Gagliano, Mark Rowland, and Danny Mackey, what he learned from each of them, how he'd like to be remembered as both an athlete and a person, and much, much more. In 2017, Nick Symmonds chose to transform from one of running's most recognizable professionals (with two Olympic appearances and a silver medal at the World Championships in the 800m) to an amatuer attempting his first marathon. Not only that, but he did it in typical Nick Symmonds fashion - by being as transparent as possible every step of the way. In this episode of the Rambling Running Podcast, we talk about Nick's recent announcement that he will be running the Eugene Marathon, his previous and upcoming marathon training, and how he'd compare the pain of a marathon to the agony of a lactic acid producing 800m race. Nick also details how and why he started Run Gum and what his role as CEO entails. “I wanted to prove to everyone that all the sacrifices I’d made and dumb decisions I made were worth it.” Nick Symmonds was a professional track and field athlete for 12 years, specializing in the 800 meters. He made two Olympic teams — the first when he was just 22 years old — and represented Team USA in Beijing and London. Nick, who lives in Eugene, OR, and is the CEO of Run Gum, retired from professional racing last year, and is now a proud, self-professed “hobby jogger.” He made his marathon debut at the 2017 Honolulu Marathon, and is now training to break three hours in the 26.2-mile distance this spring. Here’s what you’ll get in this episode: — How Nick got into running (3:20) — When he realized he could make a career out of running and the life-changing training decision that launched his professional career (5:20) — Nick’s advice for mastering the 800m (8:45) — What it’s like competing at the Olympics (11:00) — When he was “the most nervous he’s ever been for a race” (12:35) — How Nick developed his mental strength and overcame “the rollercoaster of emotions” (14:00) — The sacrifices he made to become an Olympian (16:45) — How he made the decision to retire in 2017, and how he felt the day after his retirement (17:45) — Why he wanted to run a marathon (20:45) — Why he says the Boston Marathon pisses him off and “is B.S.” and that running it would be going against his core beliefs (26:00) — The Run Gum story (30:00) — What Nick sees as the biggest problems in professional track and field (35:00) — Nick’s take on doping in professional sports and lifetime bans (37:00) — The latest on Nick’s love life — plus how he ended up on a date with Paris Hilton (40:40) Follow Nick: Instagram @nicksymmonds: https://www.instagram.com/nicksymmonds/ Twitter @nicksymmonds: https://twitter.com/NickSymmonds Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nick.symmonds/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeXJQ2GQh4BoRuAEkteU0Wg Website: https://www.nicksymmonds.com/ Follow Ali: Instagram @aliontherun1: https://www.instagram.com/aliontherun1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aliontherun/ Twitter @aliontherun1: https://twitter.com/aliontherun1 Blog: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/ Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/13333410 Thank you for listening to and supporting the Ali on the Run Show! The life expectancy for the career of a top-level athlete in any sport isn’t very long. In a sport as rough on the body as track and field, it can be just a few years. For an athlete who is outspoken against the establishment to flourish as a professional for over a decade is almost unheard of. But if you follow track, you’ve definitely heard of Nick Symmonds. The recently retired 800m specialist sat down with Pete Hitzeman to discuss how he went out on his own terms. They cover the dispute with USA Track & Field that led to him being left off the 2015 world team, and the absurdity of professional athletes literally starving under rules built for amateur athletics. Nick has never been shy of sharing his opinions, and this interview is no different. He minces no words about the International Olympic Committee, his thoughts on doping in international sports, and the roots of east African dominance in the middle and long distances. We also dive into why the surge in the popularity of running hasn’t carried over to track and field, why professional athletes need to remember that they only get paid to entertain, and the field event he wishes he could have tried. You can follow Nick on YouTube and Instagram, and download his entire 2012 training log at RunGum.com.

Meet Nick Symmonds. He is truly a man on the move. Nick is a 2-time Olympian, has medaled at 13 USA Championships (including 9 Golds). Along the way he learned to love running (believe it or not, he did NOT love running when he started). He became a staunch advocate for athletes' right. He started Run Gum - an incredible, innovative company that solves a problem many athletes face. He wrote a book "Life Outside the Oval Office." He is also after the State High Points & 7 Summits which you can read about on his site (this is all in his "down time.") He travels, does public speaking, and generally lifts and inspires people everywhere he goes. You definitely need to check out his Youtube channel for both fun and thought-provoking episodes. All in all, Nick has definitely a been-there / done-that kinda guy. Many people would stop-there! But not Nick. He recently announced his retirement from track & field racing, but it wasn't just a retirement that he announced. In the same breath, he declared his next goal - the Honolulu Marathon in December. A goal that both scares and excites him. I feel so lucky to chat with Nick about his past, present and future. We dug into what makes Nick tick and I know you will appreciate his openness, honesty and vulnerability.

“Nick Symmonds” has long been a household name in the running world. He is a two-time Olympian, six-time U.S. champion, the 2013 World Championship silver medalist, and the fourth-fastest American of all time in the 800 with a time of 1:42.95. He’s one of America’s best track athletes ever, and, at the age of 33, he’s retiring. Well, at least from the track. Nick’s passion for running and his relentless desire to do more has him turning his sights to a new, slightly different challenge: the marathon. Nick will toe the line at the Honolulu Marathon this December 10th, 2017, and he admits that he’s going to have quite a few barriers to overcome in the months ahead (barriers many of our listeners know too well). Listen in as Nick reflects back on his incredible career, discusses his objectives for both the Honolulu Marathon and his company Run Gum, and shares his insight on the art of setting goals and working towards them.   P.S. In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview CEO of the Run Gum Company, and retired USA Track and Field 800-meter Olympian, Nick Symmonds.   “Finish what you start.” A few months ago I had the privilege of speaking with Olympian Nick Symmonds about his illustrious career on the track and how his degree in biochemistry paired with his athletic background prepared him to create his own company, Run Gum. This entrepreneurial athlete recently made his exit from the world of track and field and hung up his spikes to take over the full time role of CEO of Run Gum. Nick always knew that running was going to end one day, so he intelligently prepared himself for that time before it even came. This week, I had the chance to follow back up with him and see what he is doing in his new role at Run Gum. Though Nick has retired as an 800-meter runner, he is planning one last race in Hawaii this December, though it is at a distance you might not expect. For today’s episode I will take you on a little recap of Nick’s journey, flashing back to episode 41 at the start and then concluding with mine and Nick’s most recent conversation. In so doing, I know that you will see and come to appreciate how well this incredible athlete and businessman holds true to his belief of always finishing what you start.   If you would like to learn more about this professional athlete turned entrepreneur, visit http://www.nicksymmonds.com/nick-symmonds/ and follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @NickSymmonds. Welcome to episode 52 of the Final Surge podcast. Today we welcome back Olympian and World silver medalist Nick Symmonds who joined us previously on episode 25. In this episode, we talk about Nick’s last race around the oval and his transition from 800m specialist to marathoner. Next week Final Surge has some big news which Nick will be helping us promote, and we’ll be giving away a free year’s supply of Run Gum during this promotion. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page and our Twitter page for full details.  Last time we talked you announced this was going to be your last season on a track and then you were going to finish off your career with a marathon. So how did your last race go? How do you think that 800 team that qualified from the US will do at Worlds?  You have done thousands of laps around that oval, knowing these were going to be your final two laps racing, what was going through your mind as you were waiting for the race to start? It was hot in Sacramento, but considering the heat, the crowds in the stands were not what I am sure was being hoped for. What do you think we need to do to package track differently to get people back into the stands? Last week I watched the championship race of the Tracktown Summer Series, where you were one of the team managers. I liked the team concept and found it really interesting. I found myself pulling for SF and Portland because of the team managers. What do you think they did successfully that could be used to build off of? You have things you would like to do, but you also know the leadership in the sport. What do you think is the future of the sport? Where do you think we will be in 10 years? Are there any groups you think are doing track right? Do you think the Diamond League or any country is doing it well and growing the sport? One thing I think track can do better is marketing the athletes. Part of that is the athlete doing what they can to build their own fan base. One way you are successful with this is your new Vlog. How did that come about? Who is helping you with these vlogs? What does the production for them look like? In episode 25 you told our listeners that you would be doing a marathon, then in your vlog you announced your marathon is going to be the Honolulu Marathon. Why did you choose this race? Just looking at you, your body has a build of a 800/1500 runner, what are your plans for training, do you plan on trying to drop weight or to see what you can achieve with your current build? How is your nutrition changing? One thing you talk about in the vlog is having goals, what will be your goal after a marathon? An ultra? If you qualify for Boston would you run it? Your Run Gum business is going well and I am sure it is a full-time job. How are you going to balance your business and training schedule? How is your marathon training being handled, are you using your coach? What does a week of training look like right now? Coming into the US 800, what was your peak mileage? One of our listeners would like to know an example of workout(s) planned in the peak mileage phase of your marathon cycle? Run Gum is offering an all expended paid trip to run the Honolulu Marathon with you. Can you tell our listeners about that? We usually end with the Final Surge round, but if anyone wants to hear your answers they can check out episode 25. I want to do something different here. I want to thank you. As a high school coach, when I ask my kids who their favorite runner is the most popular answer is Nick Symmonds. You have been such a great ambassador for the sport. You have been such a great advocate for the athlete. You have given back so much to the sport and have taken time to talk to and inspire kids and sign autographs. I want to thank you for all you have done for the sport and wish you the best.

When you switch from one coach to the next how does that work with your training for events? Are you currently training for any specific races? How do you blend one week into the next? Of course, all episodes will still be free both on iTunes and at http://keepmovingforward.us/, however, if you would like to ensure my future success, your support would be much appreciated.   “Find a way.” The mantra of any person who ever wanted to accomplish something greater than himself. No matter the insurmountable odds, the treacherous landscape, the uncertain road ahead, if the desire and passion is great enough, you will find a way. These are words to live by. But how do you go about achieving that courage to push forward no matter what? How do you know that you’ve truly given it your all in pursuit of finding a way to accomplish your dreams? For the answer, we can turn to Nick Symmonds.   Coming out of a NCAA Division III school, Nick found himself on both the 2008 and 2012 US Olympic teams, a feat that is rarely heard of, as your top tier athletes generally come from institutions with Division I athletic programs. However, Nick overcame those odds that seemed to be stacked against him and went on to win 7 NCAA DIII titles, 6 USATF Outdoor National titles, and came in 5th place in the finals of the 800-meter run in the 2012 London Games; clocking in a personal best time of 1:42.95.   While still pursuing his athletic career, Nick became victorious in yet another area of life that peaked his interest. Utilizing his knowledge and experience cultivated as a track and field athlete, Nick co-founded his own company, Run Gum. Nick saw a need in the energy drink market and wanted to offer a substitute for products that might weigh a person down. Having an option like gum, rather than the conventional energy drink or bar, would allow a person to better maximize their workout.   With his background in biochemistry, Nick created this very piece of gum and branded it on the market as Run Gum, finding a way to turn himself into a successful entrepreneur.   He is a person who seems to always find a way to succeed and bring his best self to the track and to the office. I want to thank him for taking time out of his day to speak with me about his journey, and I hope that you enjoy my interview with Nick Symmonds.   If you would like to learn more about this professional athlete turned entrepreneur, visit http://www.nicksymmonds.com/nick-symmonds/ and follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @NickSymmonds. Episode 25 of the Final Surge podcast we talk to Nick Symmonds. Nick is a 6-time US National 800 meters champion, 2-time Olympian and won a silver medal in the 2013 World Championships in the 800. Nick is spending more time these days working on his new company Run Gum, but he tells us he is not done yet on his Oval Office. If you are not following us on Twitter we can be found @FinalSurge. Let us know your thoughts on the podcast or the Final Surge software. For those who maybe have heard of you, but not heard your story, can you tell us how you got started in running when you were young? You took a little different route out of high school and went D3, why did you choose that route? After college, you got a contract with Nike? My favorite race of all time to watch is the 1972 men's Olympic final for the 800 in which Dave Wottle won. I am sure you are familiar with it right? So with that in mind let’s talk 800 race strategy. It seems that the most common way to run an 800, and i believe the way you try to run it too, is running about 2 seconds faster on the first lap than the second. While for most other races, coaches usually push for a more even or negative split. In that 72 race Wottle runs his race, he ran an even 26 for every 200 split. He was like 4 second back at 200, was like 2 second back at the 400 and was still in last at the 500. So that race seems to lend to a move even split, so I want to hear your theory on the race strategy there? Most of our podcast are with coaches or athletes who are working with 10k, marathon type runners. So with an 800 runner, I want to talk a little training. We have many high school and college coaches who I know listen to this podcast. If you had a chance to develop an 800 runner say starting as a freshman in high school and you could have them until they graduated college, what would the training look like? Would you be more strength based with1600 and 3200 or 200 for speed work? How would you have strength or plyo work set up? A few numbers for you… 1:42.95, 3:34.55, 3.59.68… These are your PR's for 800, 15 and mile. But I am curious, what is your 5k PR time? Now, what about that 5.19 PR in the beer mile. Are we going to see an attempt to go sub 5 there? Last we saw you on the track you were pulling out of the Olympic trials because of an injury. How is the rehab going? So can we plan on seeing you make another run for a world championship or Olympic team? What is your recovery process like? How much cross training are you doing or what other activities? When will see back on the track? So you are in the process it seems of transitioning from an elite athlete to an en entrepreneur, can you tell us about Run Gum and what growing pains you may have had? When my athletes come to me about fueling I hate to talk about anything like energy drinks because I am a big believer in eating real food, not sugar and junk. Is Run Gum looking to be a replacement? How does Run Gum work? Would a marathoner bring one piece with them? We talk about him publishing his 800 training log. Did you say you are going to run a marathon in 2018? Have you thought about which one that is going to be? There is a lot of talk about caffeine benefits for marathoners and ultra runners but what about for shorter races? I think what we have seen from you is you don’t always take the easy route. You seem to like challenges. How has that helped you in helping to launch a business? What is next for the company, is it going to stop with gum or you have something else planned? The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-351 – RunGum  (Audio: link) Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello my friends.  How’s your October going?  This is Chris, your host.  Welcome to episode 451 of the RunRunLive podcast.  Today we’re going to chat with Nick Symmonds Olympian, 800m champion and CEO of RunGum.  I usually shy away from talking about products but Nick seemed like a fairly interesting dude and I like to support entrepreneurs, especially in our space. Reading Nick’s bio he seems a bit of a high-energy renegade type.  A world class 800M racer with a rich social life – supposedly he dated Paris Hilton but I didn’t have the guts to go there.  Perhaps he’s the Toulouse-Lautrec of middle distance running?  I tried to tease him out on his start-up story but he mostly sticks to the script. It’s something we are seeing more of.  Accomplished runners in 2016 don’t have to fade into obscurity or open a shoe store.  The new playbook in to use that 15 minutes to launch something.  A cookbook, a clothing line or a supplement. I haven’t tried the RunGum, but I suppose it’s as good a way as any to get caffeine into your system.  I’m a bit leery of supplements in general, but I tend to play a long game when it comes to my health and fitness and I’m not looking for shortcuts.  If he gets a hit with RunGum it will be from treating it as a fashion accessory not as a supplement.  It could go viral on him if he can get a Kardashian to spit some out at the Oscars or something. In section one I’m going to read an abstract from an NIH article on supplements because they said it better than I could.  In section two I’ll talk about the interesting nature of social media algorithms. … It’s been 2 weeks since the Portland marathon and I have only run once.  I’ve been doing a lot of strength workouts and yoga.  My right hip is a little tight and I don’t want to push it.  I’m on a strict beer, chips and cake diet that is working wonders at reversing the ill effects of eating clean for 90 days! I plead my case with the Portland marathon and they credited me 4 minutes off my finishing time for running that extra ½ mile.  Honestly, the only reason I pushed so hard was I knew I was close.  I’m not sure we can make a linear assumption on that pace! But, officially it’s now in the books as a 3:34:54.  That puts me just over 5 minutes under my BQ for 2018. Thank you for all the great feedback on that episode.  It seems to have resonated with many of you. … The RunRunLive podcast is Ad Free and listener supported.  We do this by offering a membership option where members get Access to Exclusive Members Only audio ****This week the first chapter of the lost zombie novel!!!! In general the weather has been great for most of the marathons this fall.  That’s going to put time pressure on all you people looking to qualify for Boston in 2018.  You’d better get chewing some RunGum because you may need 4-5 minutes under your qualification standard! It’s funny.  It’s just like the 4 minute mile story.  No one thought it was possible until Bannister did it.  Now they run sub-4 in high school!  You lower that Boston standard and people are going to figure out how to do it. That’s the one of the great things about challenges.  The bigger the challenge the more likely we are to rise to it, the more likely we are to have our finest hour! On with the show! Section one – NIH Article on Supplements - Voices of reason – the conversation Nick Symmonds THE RUN GUM & COMPANY STORY PEOPLE MATTER. PERFORMANCE MATTERS In the fall of 2002, Run Gum co-founder Nick Symmonds began his studies at Willamette University in the field of biochemistry. When Nick wasn't in class or the lab, he was running miles as part of the cross country and track and field teams. It was on the track that Nick met Run Gum's other co-founder, Coach Sam Lapray and a dynamic partnership was formed. This partnership would go on to win 7 Division III NCAA Titles, 6 USATF Outdoor National Titles, and make two Olympic teams (Beijing 2008, London 2012). Always searching for the extra tenth of a second that could separate winning from losing, they experimented with non-banned performance-enhancing stimulants. Pulling from Nick's biochemistry background and experience in training and competition, they knew what chemicals the human body needed to perform optimally. Among these was the world’s most consumed stimulant, CAFFEINE. Nick and Sam found that the current methods of delivering these important stimulants to the body often required drinking large quantities of liquid in the form of coffee or energy drinks. To achieve optimal performance, they needed to eliminate the water, acid and slow absorption. They wanted a product that could perform as well and as fast as Nick. It was on the track during one of their many training sessions together that the idea came to them. GUM. Utilizing chewing gum as the delivery vehicle for stimulants to the human body allowed for faster uptake through sublingual absorption. Furthermore, this lightweight, zero calorie option would allow an athlete to run free without the unwanted liquids around in their stomachs. Truly, the smarter caffeine kick had been found. They launched Run Gum because they truly believe that people matter and their performance matters, both in sport and in life.  They hope they can show this with the products they create, the inspiration they provide and the support to athletes of all levels. Section two Social Media algorithms - Outro Well my friends you have chomped your caffeine laced gum through the end of episode 4-351 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  Feeling a bit jittery? I have some good news.  I mentioned I was upgrading my home computers, right?  I found a backup of my zombie novel that I thought I had lost in a hard disk crash 2 years ago.  I have a feeling you folks on the members feed may be getting some zombies…. I’ve got no big plans other than continue to lose fitness.  If my hip feels better I may try to lay on some speed for my Thanksgiving 5K.  But I’m not pushing it.  I have to think about what my next big thing is. Speaking of big things, did your see the Guinness record for the USA cross country run is going to fall this week?  Probably by the time you hear this.  I was trading emails with Frank Gianinno who has held the record since 1980.  He did it in 46 days and 8 hours and 36 minutes. As we speak Pete Kostelnick should be pulling into NYC with an average of 72 miles a day to set a new record.  Frank is going to be down there to greet Pete this week.  I’m going to chat with Frank later in the week if we can swing it. You know what’s special about Pete?  Nothing much.  He started running to lose weight.  His first goal was to complete a marathon.  He caught the bug and ran Boston in 2009 and 2010.  Then he caught the ultra-bug and went on the set a new record at the Badwater 135.  Now he’s going to break the record for running 3,000 plus miles across the country that has stood for 36 years. Just because He decided to lose some weight and run a marathon. Humans are amazing.  There are miracles hidden in each of us.  We just have to find them. And I’ll see you out there. An outspoken advocate for athletes rights, his company Run Gum has sued the US Olympic Committee and USA Track & Field to help track athletes better market themselves. Considering that more than 50% of elite track and field athletes live under the poverty level, this would dramatically help them land more sponsorships and make a better living. In this far-ranging conversation, Nick and coach Jason Fitzgerald talk about everything from Tesla and SpaceX, auctioning off ad space on Nick's shoulder to the highest bidder, what it feels like to perform on the world's biggest stages, and starting his performance running gum company Run Gum.

*“I want you to develop a taste for winning,” says Nick Symmonds, one of a kind athlete, YouTube sensation, and two-time Olympian.* Nick has forged his own interesting path from a modest and unlikely athletic beginning to the very pinnacle of international elite sport, and competed for the United States in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, and was the World Championships silver medalist in the 800 meters in 2013, and the second fastest American of all time in 1:42.95. A New York Times feature article ( https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/03/sports/olympics/nick-symmonds-retirement-running.html ) described Nick as, “The *most outspoken, polarizing, and essential American track and field athlete of the past decade.* As a runner, his preferred style was to sit and kick. As an activist for athletes’ marketing rights, as well as an advocate for gay rights and gun control, he operated from the front, a loud, bold provocateur.” One official nicknamed him, *“Team USA’s official pain in the butt.”* These days, Nick works as an “athlete-preneur,” utilizing his passion for fitness to inspire clients to become “the kind of athlete that has so many tools in your chest that you can win no matter how the race goes. Whether it’s rainy, sunny, or windy, you always find a way to win.” Still, Nick is careful to not focus too much on the “winning” aspect of the outcome and points out that it is possible to be “too dedicated.” Instead, he emphasizes the importance of keeping your approach to training light-hearted enough that you still enjoy yourself. “For me, it’s less about the competition, and more about just having fun with fitness: staying fit and inspiring others to have fun with their own fitness.” Nick has also built up an impressive resume in a very short time, in the mountains specifically, and he is currently working on collecting all 50 state high-points! He’s also publicly expressed his desire to climb the 7 Summits, the tallest mountain on each continent. And when he isn’t running or climbing, he can be found working on the business that he co-founded in 2014, Run Gum ( https://rungum.com/ ). Nick’s goal with formulating Run Gum was to have an energy product that *you can easily keep in your back pocket for whenever you need it most*. He serves as CEO for this fast growing energy company, and in this episode, you’ll learn all about what inspired him to start Run Gum, the clean ingredients it’s made of, and why it’s not just for athletes, but really, for anyone and everyone in need of an easy energy boost. Be sure to check out his awesome YouTube videos here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD7adIyu8GA ) , and enjoy this conversation about the importance of having a balanced perspective in your approach to fitness. *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad introduces his guest who is a great Olympic runner and promoter of track and field sport. [01:25] For Nick a daily workout is kind of the glue that holds everything else together. [04:33] One commonality that all the good coaches have is patience. [07:15] A coach really sets the culture on a team. [11:54] Because Nick developed his running in a small community, he built up the confidence of how good he was.  This would probably not have happened had he run in stricter competition. [15:06] His coach told him to develop a taste for winning. [17:17] Confidence cannot be understated or undervalued. [19:41] Sometimes you just stop thinking about time and just focus on racing and the time will come. [22:14] After breaking his PR in the race, he was depressed. [25:59] Now with racing behind him, Nick is known as the YouTube guy. [28:32] All three medalists from the 2012 men’s 800 were injured in the 2013 season. [30:56] The New York Times article quotes that Nick was the USA’s official pain in the butt. Why? He knew where all the money in the sport was going. [31:05] Why does he think the athletes have not been able to band together as a force and try to advocate for fairness and for better compensation? [33:00] Maybe a benefit from the COVID is that the whole Olympic movement has been disrupted. [37:22] How did the Run Gum thing get started? [39:18] You really have to understand the money part of your business model to have it succeed. [42:39] Know what you are good at and know what you are not good at.
