In this episode of All Things Endurance, host Rick Prince chats with structural integration specialist, Dr. Lawrence van Lingen. Dr. van Lingen takes a holistic and systemic approach to running form due to his belief that nothing in the body functions in isolation. While some may view Dr. van Lingen's methods as contrarian in nature, they are evidence-based and get results - which may be why so many professional athletes seek out Dr. van Lingen.  About Dr. Lawrence van LingenDr. van Lingen has helped thousands of people overcome pain and injury and enhance their sports performance and everyday well-being. He has over twenty years of experience in sports chiropractic, physical therapy, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, movement coaching, and breathing techniques. Lawrence is the founder of Innerunner, an online community with masterclasses, workshops, programs, and teachings that aim to transform your running and movement potential. He helps his running community and world-class athletic clients, such as Red Bull, Mr Price Running, Santa Cruz Syndicate and athletes such as Greg Minnaar, Ryan Sandes, Taylor Knibb, Jan Frodeno, and Flora Duffy, to name just a few, to run better, move better, and feel better.  Areas covered in the podcast: 1.       What is your background?2.       Running gait is often solely viewed through the lens of the musculoskeletal system. Your take on it is different. Could you explain?3.       In your opinion, do gait specialists in the US have a different view of how the body functions than elsewhere in the world?4.       Why do you think more people don't have this systemic view of how the body functions and therefore, how running gait is influenced?5.       Clearly, your model of viewing the mind/body as a whole differs greatly from most others. That being said, with respect to conventional gait analysis, what are some things that you feel they get right, and wrong?6.       Are there some common reasons that you've found across working with a variety of athletes for gait issues?7.       Do you ever encounter resistance from potential athletes with respect to your systemic view of the body?8.       If you could give just a few pieces of advice for our listeners today with respect to improving their running form, what would it be?Lastly, what are some of the biggest and most common running form myths that you are aware of, and why are they myths?

Ryan Sandes is for South African Trail Running like Siya Kolisi is for South African Rugby: an icon whos name will stand the test of time, not only for the incredible results and personal success that he has achieved but for the lasting and transformative impact that he has had on the sport as a whole.16 years ago a young Ryan Sandes, who was completing his honours degree at the time, signed up to run the Kysna Marathon. Where he'd usually be in attendance of the Annual Oyster Festival, him and his friends decided they'd shape up and participate in the run element of the festivities as well. Having left it to the last minute, he pulled the short straw and was the only one who wasn't able to secure an entry to the half marathon. With youth and bravado on his side, he figured "oh well, half marathon or full, can't be that difficult"...and so one of the most iconic Ultra Distance Trail Runners of all time discovered his talent.Since that fateful day Ryan has had a prolific career of racing for podium positions, he has won an ultra on each continent and has racked up a bucket list of world-wide adventures that have taken him from the depths of the Amazon Rain Forrest to some of the highest peaks on the globe. But what distinguishes Ryan from the rest is his mental stoke and absolute passion for nature, people and using his sport as a vehicle for good.In this conversation you'll hear about: Ryan's circumnavigation of Lesotho and multi-day exploration of the Himalayas, plus the lessons in humanity and compassion along the way.The teachings of hindsight and the beauty of relinquishing control. The pinnacle of Ultra Trail Running: UTMB, the 4 failed attempts and the one in which he triumphed. How trail running has evolved as a sport, what it is doing for the people and communities that are involved and Ryans influence on South African trail running.Mindset and why if more people spent time alone in nature "we'd be able to solve more of the world's problems".This episode was a true bucket list one for us but we couldn't have predicted how epic it would be!If you need visuals to help you paint the picture find Ryan's Red Bull photo library here:https://www.redbullcontentpool.com/search?q=Ryan%20Sandes&sort=-scoreEnjoy.

Ryan Sandes is one of the world's best-ever ultra-distance trail runners. His remarkable career started only in his 3rd year of university, when as a wannabe Springbok rugby player and non-runner, he entered the Knysna marathon – only because the half marathon was fully booked. After only three weeks of training, he completed the 42.2km in a little over three hours - which marked the beginning of a rather unexpected and quite remarkable career. His first official race as a novice trail runner, was a 250km race across the Gobi desert. Four months of training later, this totally unknown runner from Cape Town surprised the ultra-running world by crossing the finish line first. He went on to become the first person to win all four races in the 250km Four-Desert Series, and then to become the first person to win an ultra-trail race on all seven continents. Ryan upped the ante again, when he and a friend, Ryno Griesel, went on to set a new trail-running record by running 1 435km across the Great Himalayan Trail in Nepal, in only 25 days. Which included climbing 63.7km in elevation - the equivalent of running up and down Mount Everest 7.5 times! He speaks candidly and without filter about his career challenges and lessons - and let's us into his head as he describes the most extreme spiritual high moments of ‘going to the well', and to the depths of hell when the mind and body shuts down through sheer exhaustion. It's a riveting conversation with someone who's been to places that few humans ever have, or will go. Tom covers the connection to the Blue Mountains and it’s people and why keeping his event environmentally sustainable is of such importance. Tom details the never-ending challenges (fire, flood, pandemic, avalanche, etc) of trying to produce an event in 2020 and explains the final insurmountable hurdles for this year’s race. As usual, we dig deep on the big issues like being swamped by muddy hugs on the finish line, carrying house bricks on the mandatory gear list and being dominated by his wife in the Perisher Pub Crawl for 7 years straight! If you enjoyed the Podcast, please subscribe or follow Running Matters to be notified when each episode is released.Feel free to use the online discount codes below:•GU Energy Australia (15%): RUNNINGMATTERS•Fractel Performance Running Caps (15%): runningmatters•T8 Running kit (10%): RUNNINGMATTERS20•Runnulla (10%): Mention Running Matters in store.•Precision Hydration (15% off the entire first order of electrolytes): RUNNINGMATTERS15

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with one of the most seasoned ultra runners we’ve had on the show to date, Ryan Sandes. Ryan currently holds the fastest known time running through the Great Himalayan Trails, has won major trail races in all 7 continents and does not shy away from adventure runs either. Most recently, he ran 100 miles on a 100 meter loop around his house. Absolutely wild but he loves it and that's what matters, right? Can't wait to share his story with you. Christopher McDougall became one of my favorite authors immediately after I finished, Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. Not only was it an incredibly entertaining story, but the way he weaves research, science and side stories alongside the main narrative is just as educational as it is exciting. Since then I’ve read Natural Born Heroes: Mastering the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance and his most recent book, Running with Sherman: The Donkey with the Heart of a Hero. His books cover epic adventures however I met Chris outside of my apartment one day randomly as I spotted him finishing up a barefoot run in Silver Lake while I happened to be walking home. I’m glad I stopped him because this conversation wouldn’t have happened otherwise. In 2010 Ryan became the first competitor to have won all four of the coveted Desert Trail Races, each a 6-7 day 250km self-supported foot race. In addition to this in 2008 Ryan and trail running partner Ryno Griesel set a new fastest known time across the great Himalaya trail covering an astonishing 1504km in 24 days, 4 hours and 24 minutes. In 2016 Ryan launched his autobiography TrailBlazer which has become a worldwide success. This week we talk with Ryan Sandes all the way from Cape Town, South Africa. His bio is long but what stands out most is his 5th, 2nd and 1st at the Western States 100 where he’ll be racing again this year. Along with preparing to run the iconic Two Oceans road marathon, Ryan recently invented a project called the 13 Peaks Challenge. Similar to the “rounds” in the U.K., there are 13 summits one must tag in 1, 2 or multi-day efforts. The time required and the ambition is all on the individual to decide. “I was keen to do a link up of a bunch of peaks. I’m not very scientific; I didn’t really check the distance between the peaks. I guessed it might be around 50-60 kilometers but it was over 100. 13 peaks is just a rad adventure that anyone can try.” Ryan was intent on creating a logical route - one that didn’t require orienteering experience - so despite some suggestions from friends that he allow variable linkups of all 13 peaks he’s strict on keeping it a loop that finishes where it starts in true “round” style. We also talked about his general feeling on FKTs and why they matter most to the individual, not the public or critics.

One thing I’ve learned since doing this podcast - you never know how these conversations are going to go. But my favourite Looking Sideways chats are the ones that take on a life of their own, following their own conversational ebbs and flows. And episode 45, my conversation with ultra runner Ryan Sandes, is definitely one of those chats, For the uninitiated, Ryan is an ultra runner but you could also describe him as an adventure runner. He made his name on events such as the Four Deserts Series, in which competitors race 255 miles over seven days in separate races across the Sahara, Gobi, Atacama and Last Desert in Antarctica. He followed this by clocking wins in prestigious endurance events such as the Western States 100, and undertaking a succession of phenomenal endurance running feats that culminated in a Fastest Known Time (FKT in the parlance) attempt on a version of the Great Himalayan Trail with compatriot Ryno Griesel. That effort saw them race 1500km across the length of Nepal km in a time of 25 days, 4 hours and 24 minutes, battling frostbite, starvation, injury and harrowing mental challenges along the way. I was keen to find out the details of these feats, of course. But what I really wanted to explore was Ryan’s intimate knowledge of the relationship between physical pain and mental fortitude, and how athletes like this deal with the inevitable pain and hardships along the way. Ryan was as keen to talk about this as I was, and the result is a classic chat in the best Looking Sideways tradition, in which we delve into the specifics of an extraordinary way of life, and find out the reality of what it takes to operate at such a level. Massive thanks to Ryan for coming on the show and sharing his story so openly.
