Back Stronger: Stuart Secker's 100-Mile Ultra Comeback After Prostate Cancer

Choose to Endure

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2025 47:54 Transcription Available

Stuart Secker's return to the Choose to Endure podcast brings a remarkable story of resilience that transcends the typical ultrarunning narrative. Just eight months ago, Stuart received a prostate cancer diagnosis that would change everything. Four months ago, he underwent surgery to remove his prostate. And incredibly, just ten weeks after resuming training, he completed his 21st 100-mile race at the Daufuskie Island 100 in South Carolina. The conversation takes us through Stuart's entire journey, beginning with that pivotal moment of diagnosis. Rather than being paralyzed by fear, Stuart immediately shifted into problem-solving mode, asking "what's next?" With characteristic British pragmatism, he made a decision that might seem unthinkable to most – to run the brutally challenging Ultra Trail Cape Town 100-mile race just two weeks before his scheduled surgery. Why? Because it might be his last opportunity to experience the profound joy and challenge of ultrarunning.Stuart doesn't sugarcoat the recovery process. From the physical limitations of having his core muscles cut through during surgery to the psychological challenges of rebuilding his running capacity from scratch, he shares the raw truth of his comeback. His methodical approach to training – starting with short walks, progressing to gentle runs with his wife, and carefully implementing run-walk strategies – offers a masterclass in patient persistence that runners of all abilities can learn from. What makes this story so compelling isn't just the physical achievement, but Stuart's transformation into an advocate for men's health. With staggering statistics (1 in 8 men in will develop prostate cancer, rising to 1 in 4 for Black men - UK statistics), he emphasizes the critical importance of early detection through regular PSA testing. His message is clear: cancer isn't something that "happens to other people" – it can happen to anyone, and early detection saves lives.Subscribe now to hear this powerful conversation about what it truly means to endure, both on the trail and in life. Whether you're a back-of-the-pack hero or simply someone facing your own challenges, Stuart's journey will inspire you to keep moving forward with gratitude and determination.Choose to Endure:Email:info@choosetoendure.comWebsite:https://www.choosetoendure.com/YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@ChoosetoEndureInstagram:https://instagram.com/choose_to_endure?utm_source=qr Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552757049526

Joy is...The Process. In the last decade, Hillary 'Hilly Goat' Allen has earned a name as one of our most celebrated Sky and Ultra Runners of our times. Her energy, passion and success are undeniable; however, it is the manner in which her unstoppable spirit has emerged from a life-changing, near-death accident, whilst inspiring thousands of others, that has made her accomplishments all the more impressive. In 2017, she was ranked number one in the 2017 Skyrunning World Series when she fell 150ft from an exposed ridge-line during the Tromsø Skyrace in Norway. By the time fellow racer Manu Par had scrambled down to her, she had broken 14 bones, including both wrists, five ribs, both feet and vertebrae L4 and L5 in her back. Hillary survived but she was told that she would never run again. The journey of enduring multiple surgeries was in fact just the beginning of her battle for survival, as she recounts in her book, Out And Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds. What doctors could not anticipate is that Hillary would not only run again but would, after two years of dedicated rehab and recovery, return to smashing races, even setting several new course records. She also discovered cycling as part of her recovery and her gravel riding resume now includes the notorious Unbound Gravel. Hillary has been adamant in her aversion to the idea of making a ‘come back'; nevertheless, her resilience and single-minded belief is something that all of us, who have metaphorically fallen and had to put ourselves back together again, can learn from.I chatted to Hillary off the back of her impressive win at the challenging Ultra Trail Cape Town 100-mile race and was delighted to discover, having failed in my resolve to 'not be goofy in front of Hillary Allen', that she is refreshingly down-to-earth, with an awesome sense of humour and own unique, charming goofiness herself. We discussed: growing up with curiosity 'in the dirt'; balancing life, work, study and running; the importance of curiosity and love when starting out competing; what Disney and European racing have in common; thoughts on fear vs skill; not being defined so much by what happens to us but how we respond to it; being alive versus truly living; how to hold space for others; the catharsis of writing and the power of belief; respecting your 'why' and owning your experience; having the humility to practise; trusting in your body and avoiding comparison culture; making new memories and the power of community; the importance of patience, and what chemistry and rainbow nail varnish have in common.Follow: @hillygoat_climbsRead: hillaryallen.com Image: @marz_merwe Hosted on Acast. In episode 13 of the PRP, Adam gets international and connects with seasoned runner and veteran trail trotter Mez Kennedy who has been preparing for the Ultra Trail Cape Town 100K [UTCT] on November 27th, 2021. Mez shares the tale of his innate relationship with running that he has spent years cultivating one small incremental step at a time. From running because his body (and belly) began to change in his early 30's to running ultra marathons, he hasn't put any pressure on himself to go big or go home. He simply gets out the door as often as he can and has let his love for the sport grow organically. Although he is now and avid ultra marathoner, that is not how Mez's story began, nor is it how he ever imagined it unfolding. Before his love affair with the sport began, he can remember thinking to himself how insane he thought people who ran marathons were. Funny how life unfolds, isn't it? Mez also shares his keen outlook on what it means to be an ultra runner, sacrificing some of his pace related goals for a more holistic and endurance-based approach to the sport. Mez then provides some key insight into why his career as a property consultant enables him to have an ideal work/life balance which is an important factor is his overall wellness as a human being. Because he has the ability to work when he wants, he can fit his training runs in whenever they are most convenient for his schedule which has really allowed him to blossom as a runner over the past few years. Dana Daniels, fellow runner, active yogi and one of Mez's most loyal training partners joins the show as guest host and offers up her story of how she fell in love with running. From quitting smoking, to an occasional walk around the block turned jog around the block, to local recreational races, to the Comrades Marathon (which is actually 87K) she has come to full heartedly embrace the empowerment that endurance-based movement provides her with. Dana shares the story of how the two first connected and gives the PRP listenership the inside scoop on Mez's post race fueling routine. What does Mez like to sip of after a long, hard, steep training run?! Mez gets vulnerable and shares some of the struggles he has been forced to juggle over the past year. From catching and recovering from COVID in June of '21, to a frustratingly perpetual injury that he has had to seek alternative support on, to working to solve his seemingly ceaseless race nutrition issues, Mez is an ideal example of how working to improve yourself as an endurance athlete is a never ending and constantly revolving process. In classic PRP form, the three take a deep dive into the world of Strava and Mez shares his mantra for the app, "If it's not on Strava, it didn't happen." How many times will the Zoom call drop on this international assembly of like minded runners? What is the Comrades Marathon and why is it so important to the culture and people of South Africa? Why should YOU consider signing up for the UTCT at some point in your life? Answers to all of these questions and oh so much more on this ultra-international episode of the PRP. Growing up in Germany, John Harrison Pockler’s introduction to running occurred at the age of 18 when his dad received an entry to the Berlin Marathon. John would end up participating in the race, finishing 13th in his age group! The experience made John realize how much he enjoyed running and running long and far was what gave him the greatest satisfaction. John would eventually make the switch from road to trail running where he competed as an ultramarathoner. His running resume includes the Ultra-Trail Cape Town 125 km and placing 1st at the Schinder-Trail Grauer Kopf 125 km. 5 years ago, John moved to Canada for work and set his sights on several great Canadian races including the Canadian Death Race 125 km in Alberta and the North Face Endurance Challenge - Ontario - 50K and Niagara Ultra 50 km in Ontario. John set his sights on a big goal for 2020 and with races being canceled, he decided he wanted to create his own race. John heard about the Bruce Trail from friends in the trail running community, so after consulting Christian Flugel, a friend from Germany, the decision was made to attempt the Fastest Known Time running the 890-km Bruce Trail from end to end. We’ll discuss everything from start to finish, including the approach he took to select a crew to support him, some of the challenges he faced, and why he chose to fundraise for The Bruce Trail Conservancy! Kia Ora Whanau. At the end of 2017, Vibram trail athlete and Christchurch boy Scotty Hawker had every right to expect that with continued hard work and focus 2018 would be a year of stellar results. Having come 11th at UTMB and taken the victory at Ultra Trail Cape Town, Scotty was prepped and ready to go. Sometimes though, even the most well thought-out plans do not go exactly how we want and that has certainly been the case for Scotty in 2018. A string of injuries and stomach issues put a serious dent in his racing this year, including having to drop at UTMB with 20 miles to go whilst sitting in 5th place. Scotty and his family are back in his hometown of Christchurch for the next couple of months and we jumped at the opportunity to talk to him about his year and so much more. This is certainly an episode that running heads (and non running heads for that matter) will love as we were stoked as all get out to “go deep” with Scotty on a number of topics including as ever his Greatest Run Ever. Enjoy!!

Lucy Bartholomew was just 16 when she completed her first 100km race, after only taking up the sport the year before. By 18, she was the Sky Running Junior World Champion. Then in 2017, on her 21st birthday Lucy won the Ultra Trail Australia 100km race and again proved she was a force to be reckoned with on the international trail running scene with her victory at Ultra Trail Cape Town 100km in December, 2017. And while Lucy’s rise in the sport of trail running has been rapid, it hasn’t been easy. She has been the subject of much criticism for her decision to take up ultra running at such a young age. This week on the podcast I chat with Brad Brown about his most recent Ironman Finish. He just finished Ironman South Africa which was his 5th Ironman finish. Brad Brown like myself is a host of a podcast. His podcast is called The Kona Edge. He is a sports journalist in the beautiful country of South Africa. He started his journey to endurance sports with an attempt at the very famous Comrades Marathon in 2010. But before he could give that a go he had to lose some weight. He tells the story of his journey losing 1/3 of his body weight and the trip to the start and the finish of Comrades Marathon and then also Ironman South Africa.   Brad talks about how he found his way to triathlon by adding cross training to his run training. We chat about how he got from racing Ironman and running to podcasting. The only way to get onto the Kona Edge is to make it to the world championships in Kona. Which has got to be one of the most stringent criteria for being a podcast guest out there. This is Brad's 5th Ironman but like many people he battled an injury during training and he did not have the training build up he had hoped for. We talk all about the Ironman South Africa course and the weather conditions in Port Elizabeth. Brad tells the story of his race at Ironman South Africa 2016. We talk about walking an Ironman marathon. We talk about racing with family. He's raced with both his brother and his father. I learned that in South Africa they call jelly fish blue bottles which is a much prettier name than Portuguese Man o' War like we call them in the States. We talk about battling through dark spots during the race and the amazing energy of an Ironman Finish Line. We talk about his favorite part of the Ironman South Africa course. We talk about the event that may or may not have happened with pro Triathlete Jodi Swallow and a television helicopter that may have knocked her off her bike. Brad and I speak about how to stay motivated when training for Ironman year after year. He gives some good advice and it's worth  a listen. We do some chatting about the dream of going to the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Brad is going to be running the Cape Town Marathon. And the Ultra Trail Cape Town.  He's also got 2 Oceans and Ironman South Africa, JoBerg to Sea and Comrades marathon again. He is also putting together an online summit about all things Ironman. Check it out at www.theimsummit.com ( I've already signed up).
