How does a small-town weightlifting legend leave a lasting impact on the world of CrossFit and Olympic lifting? This week on the Brute Podcast, we're joined by Dex Hopkins and Matt Bruce for an eye-opening journey into the realms of strength training and competitive CrossFit. Dex reminisces about his formative days and his initial, unforgettable encounter with the incomparable Coach Gayle Hatch. Listen as Matt dives deep into Coach Hatch's legacy, sharing how one man from Baton Rouge shaped the future of USA weightlifting, producing Olympians and national champions without ever casting a net beyond his hometown. From there, we turn our attention to the sensational rise of Matt Fraser, transitioning from an Olympic weightlifter to a CrossFit powerhouse. We dissect common lifting mistakes and discuss how the sport has evolved, with a particular focus on the necessity of heavy pulling exercises in training. Matt also introduces the innovative Moffitt Method, a remote strength coaching program, while celebrating the phenomenal successes of the LSU-UNIS baseball team. Our conversation highlights the challenges of volume management in CrossFit training, showcasing the intricate balance between building strength and mastering multifaceted skills. In our final chapters, we spotlight the importance of rest and recovery, especially for those without the benefit of a personal coach. We share valuable insights from elite athletes like Chad Vaughn on managing training intensity and recovery. Relive some of the most memorable moments from the CrossFit Games, from the 2013 clean ladder to Brooke Entz's standout performances. We also revisit iconic events like the 2017 dethroning of Rich Froning by Brute's team and reflect on the logistics and excitement of endurance events. Join us for a compelling discussion filled with anecdotes, expert strategies, and reflections on the ever-evolving world of weightlifting and CrossFit. On a special episode of the Power Monkey Podcast today, we have the trio of Dave Durante, Chad Vaughn, and Chris Hinshaw discussing the specifics surrounding their creation: Capacity WOD. Capacity WOD is a program designed to supplement your current program in small bite sized chunks. Specifically, this protocol is designed to help athletes improve their ability to recover during and after a workout so that they can increase their overall capacity to do work. Dave, Chris, and Chad have been testing this out for the past 4 years, with much of the methodology coming from Chris' many years of endurance racing. Today I am very excited to bring to you a second episode I did as a guest, on my good friend Chad Vaughn's phenomenal podcast; The Barbell Mobility Podcast. Chad is a two-time Olympic weightlifter, now a phenomenal Olympic weightlifting coach himself and I've had the pleasure of working with him for the last six years at Power Monkey Camp. The last episode was A Step by Step Guide to Improving Flexibility and today will be a masterclass on shoulder mobility issues. We explain exactly how you can help athletes of all abilities improve their overhead shoulder flexibility. We discuss: What are eccentrics and how do they improve flexibility. The importance of good shoulder mobility and how it relates to shoulder stability. How to tell if it's a mobility or technical issue. Which muscles cause shoulder flexibility issues? How to improve a squat. Why the repetitive nature of sports makes certain muscles very prone to stiffness. Being under a barbell is just like being in a handstand, so training both can improve both. I hope you enjoy this episode of Chad, head on over and check out: The Barbell Mobility Podcast. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3bo70ss2KIl8DGARzg9mm6

Following the release of our very popular short film a Call For Change, sparked honestly one of my favourite conversations I've ever had on a podcast. With my good friends from Power Monkey Fitness, a company that I've kind of been working for the last five years. Dave Duranty a 2008 Olympian for Team USA for gymnastics, and Chad Vaughn two time Olympian for Team USA for weightlifting. And GB Olympian Jennifer Pinches, who you guys may have heard an episode on earlier this year with Claire Halford. We discuss WHAT is going on in the gymnastics world that we need to change? WHAT are the critical issues that people are facing from the from the coaching point of view, the parent point of view, and also the administration point of view? The reasons WHY gymnastics in particular, is more susceptible to abuse? WHAT a positive coach does differently. WHEN is showing tough love important for the development of the athlete? HOW are the parents handling these issues of abuse? What are they going through? We SHARE solutions and the next step we believe need to happen. Chad Vaughn is many things: weightlifter, Olympian, father, husband, coach, broadcaster, and mentor. He’s one of the most decorated athletes in American weightlifting history, with more national titles and international team appearances than we can count (seriously). And while Chad is best known for his two Olympic Games appearances — 2004 and 2008 — his career continues to this day in both Senior and Masters competition. In fact, Chad just narrowly missed out on yet another national title in May 2019 — and he did it at age 39. That’s incredible longevity, and while it’s increasingly common to see older lifters competing for Masters titles, it’s rare to see them doing so against competitors 20 years younger.
