No one cares about achieving your goals more than you; and no one can do the work for you to get there. You have to own that. It doesn't matter what industry or what dream you wake up with every morning, you better be the first one in and the last to leave if you want to earn victory. Power Monkey Fitness Co-Owner and Former USA Gymnastics Team Member Dave Durante believes the key the podium starts with work ethic and saying yes to challenge. Dave joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff from the US Army Fitness Truck at 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games for a conversation on his rise through the gymnastics world, battling to make the US Olympic Team and transitioning from elite athlete to coach and business owner. Dave's philosophy on progress is grounded in progressions; the ability to push forward but take it back to the basics to reinforce our foundations then get back after it. Dave takes us behind the scenes of US Gymnastics, sharing his personal journey of wins, losses and becoming the ultimate teammate on his bid to compete in the 2008 Olympics. Dave also shares the impact of Power Monkey Fitness, where he touches on the struggles of athletes figuring out the next step in their career and how CrossFit opened an opportunity for him to bring gymnastics to everyone. From elite athlete to elite entrepreneur, Dave's perspective on what it takes to win inside and outside the gym will transform your Monday mindset! Dave Durante, former USA Gymnastics Olympic team member and co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness, talks about his journey from elite athlete to coach. He details the importance of consistency in movement of the body, and the value of smaller but consistent periods of activity each day. Dave shares tips on how cancer survivors can start to regain some of their strength and mobility back after treatments, and the importance of having support along the way to maintain consistency and achieve fitness goals. He also reminds us to prioritize the process and not the end result. Key Highlights: The importance of mental fitness to help improve physical fitness. Tips for cancer survivors to regain strength and mobility after treatment. The power of consistency and focusing on the process rather than the end result to achieve goals. About our guest: Dave Durante is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and a member of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team as an alternate. Following his retirement from competition, Dave helped coach his alma mater, Stanford University, to an NCAA Team Title in 2009. He remained involved in the sport by serving on the Athlete Advisory Committee with the United States Olympic Committee and the USA Gymnastics Men's Technical Committee until 2018. From 2013-2015, Dave was a lead coach with the CrossFit Gymnastics L1 course, where he developed the CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Course. Dave is now the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness and Power Monkey Camp, which host adult fitness events worldwide. They also provide technical education in various training specialties through their social media platforms and their Power Monkey Training app. Key Moments: 12 minutes: On the importance of mental health to perform - Leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, I just missed out on the Olympic team. I was part of the Olympic selection process team, one of the last ten guys. They took eight to Athens. I was one of the two that they didn't take to Athens. I did everything I could, and I was in the best shape of my life. I was so ready competitively, but I was mentally a mess. Everything that I'm doing well physically, the complete opposite is happening on the mental side. So I found a balance in my teammates and things outside of the sport. 36 minutes: How to ease back into exercise after cancer treatments - Start with bodyweight. Really phase one is about more mobility as we discussed, but also a stronger core. So those are two things that we recommend people doing on a daily basis. You should spend five to ten minutes on core work. You spend five to ten minutes on mobility work on a daily basis. 40 minutes: On the power of consistency - It's imperative on you to wake up every day and put a priority on how important these things are to you. It doesn't need to start massive. And I think that that's the thing that's really important with consistency. It can start as easy as I'm going to walk to the end of the block today and come back and just do that for this week. When we talk about consistency, it needs to start with something attainable, something small, one day at a time, and then allow it to grow from there.Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Dave Durante is a former USA gymnast and current Coach and Entrepreneur in the Fitness space. In this podcast with Carl Paoli, Durante highlighted fundamental gymnastics movements, including creating good shapes, a strong core, and mobility while mastering handstands, rolling, and twisting. He explained how these movements are essential for gymnasts and transferable to general fitness and sports like CrossFit. Dave also dives into his experiences in gymnastics, his love for the sport, his challenges, and how he became the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness after retiring. Power Monkey Fitness provides training and education for gymnasts and athletes through their camps and online programs. Here are 9 main takeaways from the conversation: Fundamental movements are essential for gymnasts and transferable to general fitness and other sports. Good shapes, strong core, mobility, mastering handstands, rolling, and twisting are fundamental gymnastics movements. CrossFit and functional fitness has exposed gymnastics movements to the general population, allowing them to utilize tools to help with fitness goals. Training towards the highest level version of a movement, not just training towards a standard, facilitates technical progressions and builds towards a deeper understanding of movements. Some athletes are freaks of nature and can perform movements in specific technical ways due to their anatomy or unique abilities, which may not apply to the general population. Exposing people to gymnastics in CrossFit and functional fitness allows for a greater understanding of the sport. The history of sports and its regulations is essential to understand better and appreciate the evolution of the gymnastics applied movements. Although gymnastics is mainly an individual sport, pursuing it as a  team sport is the best route to finding success. When pursuing one's passions with dedication, finding balance in life is crucial to success. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carlpaoli/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlpaoli/support

This past August we held our first ever Power Monkey Fitness Retreat in Crete Greece. This was something we had been planning for a couple of years, but due to Covid related restrictions it was postpones until now. This was an epic vacation destination where our guests were able to take part in as many or as little fitness related sessions as they liked. The remained of the time was spent relaxing, snorkeling in the bluest water ever, getting massaging, eating amazing food, and connecting with new friend. Our guests worked in small group settings with expert coaches: Dave Durante, Mike Cerbus, Chris Hinshaw, Jaime Schehr, and Isiah Robinson. Dont miss our next Retreat in June 2022...almost all spots are already filled. RETREAT JUNE 2022

Dave Durante - Colourful nicknames have followed Dave Durante throughout his two decade lacrosse career: Dave the Magnificent, Dandy Dave and Dave the Dude; all adorned him as wellas one of his tailored silk suits, but sobriquets notwithstanding, he has always been awinner. Few, if any, players can boast victories in lacrosse’s four major championships. He took part in 9 Mann Cup series, winning the Canadian title 5 times. He was amember of the 1971 Richmond Roadrunners that upset favoured Peterborough for theMinto Cup junior title. In 1975, he toiled for the National Lacrosse League Quebec Caribous that captured the professional championship. And he was a member of the Canadian rep team that won the World Field Lacrosse title in Manchester, England, in 1978. Lacrosse has long been Durante’s passion and pastime, but this was not always the case. When Durante was a youngster, he was content to restrict his lacrosse activities to watching father Joe Durante and Uncle John Cervi play senior ball...mind you, Durante did play a little catch in his backyard, but baseball, soccer, hockey and high school football quenched his athletic thirst. Listing his sports reveals why he had little time for organized lacrosse. At Notre Dame High School, he was quarterback and safety for the first Jugglers team to win the Shrine Bowl. As a shortstop, he caught the eye of major league scouts from the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. When his hopes for a college baseball scholarship in the U.S. did not materialize, he enrolled at the University of B.C. where he played hockey and soccer while working towards a Bachelor degree in Physical Education. Impressed with his hockey prowess, the Detroit Red Wings offered him a spot in its farm system; and his skills as a midfielder earned him an offer to join a Fourth Division soccer club in England. He declined the hockey and soccer overtures and decided to take his backyard lacrosse intoa box. At the age of 18, Durante tried out for the Vancouver Junior B squad and was aninstant success, racking up 22 goals and 20 assists in 18 games. He moved to the Richmond Junior A team the following year, gathering 30 goals and 23 assists on the way to the 1971 Minto Cup title. Richmond lost the national championship thefollowing season but his 36 goals and 31 assists were enough to impress the Senior teams. The WLA overage junior draft was introduced in 1973 and Coquitlam, with firstpick, selected him. Despite a painful ankle injury that often cut his speed in half, Durante picked up 26 goals and 23 assists and was named the WLA Rookie-of-the-Year.After capturing the WLA scoring title in 1974, he joined the Quebec entry in the National Lacrosse League, earning 242 points in 60 league and playoff games. It was back to Coquitlam in 1976 for a 4-year stint until he was traded to the Salmonbellies prior to the 1980 season. He remained there for the next 12 seasons before retiring in 1991 at the age of 39.“I had a passion for the game,” he once told a reporter. “I am proud of what I accomplished statistic-wise, but more than that, I was a team player, that’s what I was all about.” He has scored 351 WLA playoff points, a league record. He once held the Mann Cup assistrecord, later broken by ex-teammate Geordie Dean, but he is still the fourth highestMann Cup point getter with 105. His league, playoff and Mann Cup points total 1,509, is third behind only Wayne Goss and Paul Parnell on the all-time WLA scoring list. His pro Quebec stats of 242 raised his career point total to 1,751. He was named the Mike Kelly Award winner (Mann Cup MVP) in 1976, won the Maitland Trophy for sportsmanship in 1974 and was placed on the WLA All--Star Team 8 times. Of course, as previously mentioned, he took the Rookie-of-the-Year honours in 1973. He was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997.

Dave is a gymnast yes, but this is still a weightlifting podcast and you better believe we are holding to that theme! Dave is a very talented coach and teacher and he possesses significant knowledge about areas that are very commonly weak/imbalanced for many sport specific weightlifters. We hope this can be a wake up call for any weightlifters that perhaps need to hear the message. If you want to be the best weightlifter you can be...lift as much weight over your head as you can, then try thinking in terms of being a COMPLETE athlete first(flexible and balanced.) Yes sport specificity is necessary to bring out your highest level, but stop for a minute and take an honest look at yourself. Any holes that you have might mean limited potential, lack of progress, reversing results, and/or stalled training. Always remember to be a master of the basics first with patience and discipline, and like Dave says, "TECHNIQUE MATTERS!"More about Dave...Dave is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and was part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team as alternate. After retiring from competition, David helped coach his alma mater, Stanford University, to an NCAA Team Title in 2009. Currently, Dave leads Team Power Monkey and coaches at 2 CrossFit gyms in NYC.
