This podcast focuses on the importance of taking personal responsibility, especially when feeling emotionally stuck. Often, the instinct is to blame others for our feelings, but this approach means we're not fully owning our part. Taking personal responsibility involves acknowledging, owning, and processing our own thoughts and emotions. By doing so, we reduce blame and better understand the true sources of our suffering, rather than projecting responsibility onto others. If more people embraced this mindset, it could lead to significant improvements in personal well-being and interpersonal relationships across the globe. If 2020 taught us anything, it was the value of connection and I've noticed a trend of individuals feeling less and less connected to others and I wanted to speak on this topic. I believe as we age and mature, our friendship group becomes smaller but more intimate and we learn to say no to the things we know we don't want to do. By our 40's at least in my experience, we know what we like and what we don't. Personal responsibility as we mature is key and in this episode, I want to share my thoughts on taking personal responsibility when it comes to our friendships and our relationship with ourselves. Today's episode is a conversation I had with my friend and colleague, Mike Shaver, who is the CEO of Brightpoint in Illinois. Brightpoint began as Children Home & Aid in 1883 and is going through a significant shift in how they see their role in advancing justice for families. Mike and I talked about the leadership challenges and successes he's experienced throughout his career as he worked on major organizational change efforts. What we got into is valuable for anyone who is working within an organization or system and wondering if they should stay and work on change from the inside or take the leap to working outside of the system. Mike and I have been on very similar paths throughout our careers, but we talked about why we made different decisions about whether to stay or go. We also talked about Brightpoint's vision and plans to impact the narratives, mindsets, and policies that drive the root cause issues facing families. We started the conversation with something Mike said that caught my attention. He said, "when the number of children in foster care goes up, we should take it personally and as a failure." This was a jumping off point to a conversation about accountability and personal responsibility. For more information about Brightpoint and their blueprint for impact you can visit their website at Brightpoint. You are invited to join the Proximity Podcast Club, a growing community of people supporting one another through their process of becoming who they want to be in this work. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are stepping up and taking personal responsibility to achieve true success. Understanding that empowerment comes through accountability. It's time to own it; your past, present, and future vision. Aim without accuracy is merely wishful thinking, and without taking personal responsibility, growth is impossible. When we take responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, we gain more control over our lives. This mindset encourages self-reflection, learning from mistakes, and actively seeking opportunities for improvement. It's easy to throw up your hands and play the blame game while waiting for things to work out on their own. Taking the first step is more challenging but infinitely more rewarding; inventory what didn't work out, why, how, and what YOU could do to enhance your role and alter the outcome. Ultimately, personal responsibility empowers us to shape our own future and become the best version of ourselves. Taking personal responsibility doesn't mean owning it ALL, or claiming the sole blame for all failures or unintentional outcomes. It means, looking deep into your life to see how your behavior played a part whether that was a starring role or a supportive character. It's having the courage to say “Yes, I did it. I was operating on the knowledge I had at the time which was limited and as a result, I acted impulsively without the critical knowledge I needed to make an educated and positive move that protected myself and others.” But, having taken responsibility for my actions, I have learned and grown which will help me avoid similar situations in the future, and for that, I am grateful. Isn't that so much more positive than playing the blame game full of shame and regret? So if you are scratching your head thinking, I'm not sure I have anything to take responsibility for….keep listening. Odds are you denied your part to quickly recover and move forward. Let's revisit something to learn some new strategies and develop important tools we can use along our journey. On Solutional's LinkedIn profile I found The Power of Accountability: Why Taking Responsibility is Key to Personal and Professional Success Jessica from Wilde About WellBeing coaches us on Taking Responsibility for Our Own Lives: My 5 steps to stop letting your past dictate your future! Megan Newton enlightens us on RESPONSIBILITY VS. BLAME found at evolveinnature.com Andrew Linares shares more on Evolve in Nature with LOST IN THE DRAMA TRIANGLE: UNDERSTANDING THE PARADIGM Taking personal responsibility for our past, present, and future involves a mindset shift and proactive steps to change our behaviors and attitudes. Here are some ways to start: Acknowledge the past: Reflect on past actions and decisions without blame or judgment. Acknowledge mistakes and learn from them, understanding that they have helped shape who you are today. Live in the present: Focus on the present moment and the choices you make now. Take ownership of your current circumstances and actions, knowing that they contribute to your future outcomes. Set goals: Define what you want to achieve in the future and create a plan to get there. Break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps and take action towards them consistently. Own your decisions: Accept that you are responsible for the decisions you make, whether they lead to success or failure. Learn from both outcomes and use them to make better decisions in the future. Practice self-awareness: Pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Notice patterns that may be holding you back and take steps to change them. Seek feedback: Be open to feedback from others and use it to grow. Constructive criticism can help you see things from a different perspective and improve your self-awareness. Be accountable: Hold yourself accountable for your actions and outcomes. Avoid making excuses or blaming others for your circumstances. Learn and adapt: Embrace a growth mindset and see challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. Be willing to adapt your approach based on new information or experiences. CHALLENGE: Taking personal responsibility is an ongoing process that requires self-reflection, resilience, and a commitment to growth. By adopting these practices, you can start taking control of your life and shaping a more fulfilling future. I Know YOU Can Do It!

If you've spent any time hanging around the spiritual community, you've probably heard the terms, "masculine and feminine energy" by now. I personally think they way these are being talked about... really fucking sucks, misses the mark entirely, and can keep you from the fullness in your relationships (with yourself and others) that you desire. This is something my partner Chris and I talk about often, so we decided to bring that conversation public and share our thoughts. In this show, we break down how the more popularly used "definitions" of masucline and feminine energy are holding you back and potentially harming your relationships, and how to embrace more personal responsibility within yourself so you can feel safe in your own personal space, where you, surprise surprise, cultivate and nurture both masculine and feminine energy within your own being. “These days, we have so many labels around. Some say they have a short attention span, that they have an addictive personality, or they're not good at time management. We use these labels that are really self-defeating. If you believe in these labels, you will act accordingly, so choose a good label. The best label is to become indistractable. I chose that title because it sounds like indestructible. It's meant to be a moniker that you can use to say that's who you are.” - Nir Eyal “There's no such thing as overnight success in business, even the fastest growing companies. It takes consistent effort. That's really the secret to a life well-lived. It's putting in the time in the right places in your life according to your values. So many people are cheap with their money, but when it comes to their time, they give it away to whoever wants it. It should be actually the opposite because you can always make more money, but you can't make more time. We should be stingy with our time and generous with our money.” - Nir Eyal “Most people would say the opposite of distraction is focus. That's not exactly right. Based on the word's entomology, the opposite of distraction is traction, which means any action that pulls you towards what you said you were going to do. Both words have the same Latin root ‘trahere', which means to pull. Traction is any action that pulls you towards what you said you were going to do and distraction is any action that pulls you away from what you plan to do. Distraction is an action that we ourselves take. It depends on the intent.” - Nir Eyal This conversation between Jeremy Au and Nir Eyal, the bestselling author of “Hooked” and "Indistractable," shares insights into mastering focus and avoiding distractions. The discussion revolves around three key themes: Understanding the Psychology of Distraction: Nir explains the internal and external triggers that lead to distraction and emphasizes the importance of mastering emotional discomfort as the first step to becoming indistractable.Time Management and Calendar Control: He highlights the significance of planning time for traction, aligning one's schedule with personal values, and using schedule syncs to prioritize tasks and prevent distractions.Building Consistency and Identity: He also shares his personal journey towards becoming indistractable and advocates for adopting the identity of an indestructible person to make focused choices consistently. Throughout the conversation, they talk about the power of intentionality in one's personal and professional life, implementing the strategies outlined in his book. They also discussed the impact of technology in creating habits, the challenges of writing a book and achieving personal growth through consistent effort. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are stepping up, doing the work, recognizing our role, and taking personal responsibility. Regardless of who's watching, first and foremost, we're accountable to ourselves. Ever try and get one over on yourself? Maybe you're the most gullible when you're selling yourself, justifying your actions, and glamorizing the situation. I mean really, who's watching? YOU and you count, possibly more than anyone. How can we start taking responsibility without all the shame and guilt? Forgiveness. But this only happens with acceptance. Looks like we have a lot to unpack and a process to follow, so let's get started. Where are you when it comes to personal responsibility? It's actually a whole thing. I think it was easier to take responsibility when I got a little older and wiser. I can remember a time when I played the blame game and considered myself mostly in the right. There was also that period I was convinced everything would work out perfectly if people would just do as I told them…yeah seriously! I've grown. But when I finally had enough experience under my belt and I could take a step back to look at a larger body of work (my life) I could start to see patterns. Hurts and habits that had a way of repeating themselves. The only common denominator was me so it was pretty apparent. In order to move past that revelation, I had to take responsibility for my own actions and the role I played. A bitter pill, sometimes, but the critical learning made it easier to swallow. Marty Ward helps us define What Is Personal Responsibility And What It Means For You found at 1vibrantlife.com At masterclass.com I found a plan, Personal Responsibility: How to Develop Personal Responsibility PragerU breaks it down a little further on their youtube channel Personal Responsibility: The Ultimate Freedo Sara Lindberg helps us with How to Forgive Yourself found at healthline.com Please remember: Be patient with yourself You only know what you know Be curious for the why but accepting of the unanswered questions Be flexible, you can pivot anytime you want Own it, no one can write the same story the or the same ending Share with others, your story might be just what someone needs to get them through their struggle Take your time, Rome wasn't built in a day Don't be afraid, being willing to take the next step is the hardest part. Be Kind, with yourself and others. Forgive yourself and others and detach with love when it makes the most sense CHALLENGE: exchange your burdens for freedom with personal responsibility and forgiveness. Create healthy boundaries as you learn more about your capacity and need for self-care. I Know YOU Can Do It!
Exploring Blind Leaps Through Experience: The Story Of Two Who Transformed Their Lives Bradley and Jennifer are the hosts of the Blind Lead podcast, which used to be called the NBS by BSF podcast. The podcast has gone through a transformation and will now focus on self-development, finding one's voice, and hearing from people who have taken massive blind leaps. Over the last 18 months, both of them have gone through personal shifts, which is what inspired the name of the podcast. Bradley and Jennifer have gone through career and personal transitions, and now the two of them will kick off the new season of the podcast by talking a bit about their own stories. Jennifer is vice president of development at NBS, a nutrition startup. She left a nonprofit fundraising job after 18 years and is passionate about helping their clients with weight loss and nutrition. She explains how the first of the month can be a scary time for a small business as everything resets to zero. Bradley and Jennifer didn't know what they were doing when they first got together but overcame the obstacles and are now in a loving and fulfilling relationship. Jennifer and Bradley are an example of making a bold decision to pursue a relationship despite the risks. They are in a long-distance relationship, living in two different states, but also not long-distance due to them having homes in both locations. They talk about how making decisions in life comes with consequences, and how they are aware of both the good and the bad that came from their decision to be together. They are both very fulfilled in their partnership, which is the most fulfilling of any relationship either of them has been in. They talk about shooting each other straight, and how Jennifer is the more eloquent and polished of the two. They emphasize taking personal responsibility for their decisions and the consequences that come with it. Jennifer and Bradley have a unique and difficult story of leaving their marriages in order to find true happiness. Bradley explains that the decision to leave was not for Jennifer, but for himself, and that it was a blind leap with no safety net or guarantee of success. Jennifer adds that if you wait for a sign or an exit strategy, you will never be ready for the leap of faith. They both agree that taking that blind leap was terrifying, but ultimately the only way to find true happiness. Bradley also emphasizes that there was a cost to leaving, both financially and emotionally, but that it was worth it to take a chance on happiness. 0:00:00 "Exploring Authenticity Through Blind Leaps: Introducing Season One of the Blind Lead Podcast" 0:02:33 "The Journey to Becoming Vice President of Development at NBS and Finding Love" 0:04:22 Conversation on Taking Personal Responsibility for Relationship Decisions 0:06:18 Taking a Blind Leap: The Price Tag of Pursuing True Happiness 0:10:58 "A Conversation on Taking the Leap" 0:13:13 Living Life to the Fullest: A Conversation on Gratitude, Fulfillment, and Connection 0:14:48 Reflections on Travel and Disconnecting from Technology 0:18:31 Exploring New Experiences: A Divorced Family's Journey of Bonding and Growth 0:20:09 Exploring the World: Jennifer and Bradley's Upcoming Travel Plans 0:21:52 Exploring Peru and Planning a Nutrition Built Strength Meet Up 0:23:24 Rebranding a Company in 24 Hours: The Story Behind Nutrition Built Strength 0:27:42 Nutrition, Build Strength: Making the Leap to a Better Representation of Who We Are 0:29:25 Preview of Rainier Wylde: Taking Blind Leaps and Listening to That Little Voice 0:31:27 Guest to come 0:35:27 "The Blind Leap: Moving from Point A to Point B When You Don't Know the Clear Path" --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thebigleapbynbsbybssf/support
