Mike Fitch is an innovative fitness educator and movement coach with 20 years of experience in the fitness industry. He is the Founder/Creator of Animal Flow, a unique ground-based movement program that has certified more than 10,000 fitness professionals in 42 countries. Mike has also developed multiple other skills-based bodyweight training programs including the Bodyweight Athlete and is a highly sought-after presenter and content contributor. Mike spent years exploring and coaching a range of techniques including Kettlebells, Olympic Lifts, Corrective Exercise, and pre/post rehabilitation. However, it wasn't until he turned 30 years told that he decided to put down the weights and explore only bodyweight disciplines. He describes his change in training as a major turning point in his personal and professional development: “I had reached a point where I decided that I was way too young to feel so beat up all the time. There was something that I had been missing.” Beginning with basic gymnastics, Mike found himself both incredibly challenged and inspired. Gymnastics soon lead to parkour, which lead to breakdancing and then hand balancing. A common thread that ran throughout these disciplines is the use of animal movements (locomotion) along with the emphasis of “flow.” Mike is always the first to admit that he didn't create animal movements. He sees his contribution to the discipline as having created a systematized program that makes the movements easy to learn and easy to coach for people of all ages and skill levels. Building upon his previous understanding of body mechanics, anatomy, and common postural issues, he developed specific ways to integrate animal patterns and other bodyweight-focused movements to elicit specific responses and results. His goal was to use these animal movements to improve the function and communication of the Human Animal. When it came to incorporating the Flow component, Mike found the feeling of free and potentially endless movement to be incredibly empowering. He knew that others would feel the same immediate connection he did. In putting it all together, he created the Animal Flow program and its global community of inspired movers. Today Mike remains dedicated to the various bodyweight-based disciplines, but still draws upon his accumulated knowledge to develop new training programs. You'll see him integrating kettlebells, VIPRs and other heavy weights into his multi-disciplinary training regimes. Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Mike Fitch about how Animal Flow can lead to improved movement. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How Animal Flow helps people reconnect with their bodies and addresses deficits in physical attributes. - Why you should push yourself out of your comfort zone to stimulate growth and train the body to adapt to new challenges. - How focusing on discomfort in the learning process creates new neural pathways and improves performance over time. - How engaging in Animal Flow movements results in significant improvements in cognitive markers and joint repositioning sense. - How incorporating variety and variability in traditional movement patterns enhances overall motional. Rip describes the challenges involved in learning and coaching the Olympic lifts and why including them in your strength training program is worthwhile.
In today's recording we talk about how it is easy, especially for a newcomer, to look at a lift and just see general speed or strength, or a made or missed attempt. But, if someone is trying to learn and best understand the Olympic lifts, where should or can they direct their eye when observing a snatch, clean, or a jerk? What should they notice? What is most important? Tune in to hear our suggestions on the topic. Enjoy the show!

Today's podcast is with Alex Kanellis. Alex is the founder of Landmine University. He is a former state champion wrestler, Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year (Football), and University of Iowa football player. He has been a scholastic strength coach, wrestling and football coach, as well as having spent time as a performance coach for Weck Method. Currently, Alex's focus is on training youth wrestlers, as well as his work with Landmine University. Strength training for athletes is fundamentally basic. The powerlift variations, as well as Olympic lifts recruit a large amount of muscle mass and are fundamentally stimulating. At the same time, with the potential to be over-used, “functional” training has emerged, offering light-weight movements with high demands for balance and coordination. Landmine oriented training movements offer a happy medium in a high potential for force application, a rotational and arc-like orientation, as well as short learning curves (unlike the longer learning curve of the Olympic lifts). On today's podcast Alex goes into his experiences that brought him into landmine training, and how he uses the method with athletes. He also gets into the advantages and unique aspects of the method, and touches on the transfer points to a number of athletic movements and practices. Alex touches on isometric landmine variations, as well as gets into GPP methods for young athletes in general, and what we can learn from the athleticism of wrestling and combat sports. PART 3 WITH SAM WHITNEY | Season 4, Episode 6 Part 3 with Sam Whitney we talk olympic lifts, power lifting, and the conjugate method for athletes. Plus, we get into some quick hitters like back squat vs front squat and Sam's thoughts on benching for collegiate athletes. We tackle: What are olympic lifts and how he incorporated them in collegiate athletics. How he would approach programming and teaching athletes with different ranges of skill set in olympic lifts, from first year students who have never lifted to seniors at the top of their game. Why he never believed in rushing to learning olympic lifts and instead focused on functional movements first. How ego can sabotage your programming as a strength and conditioning coach How strong is "strong enough" and how do you gauge when an athlete is there Sam's experience training and developing himself as a power lifter What the conjugate method is for power lifting and olympic lifting. How Sam learned and used the conjugate method as part of his power lifting training and eventually in his collegiate program. How using a box squat helps with form and range of motion for your non-box squat and full squat. How speed focused training helps with absolute strength What lessons Sam took from his power lifting training to his collegiate strength training and programming. Quick hitters: Should overhead athletes bench Back squat vs front squat Thoughts on benching for collegiate athletes Should everyone bench/squat/deadlift etc? Hex bar vs straight bar deadlift Sumo vs. conventional deadlift Contact info: samual.whitney@gmail.com alignthegrind@gmail.com alignthegrind.com Sam Whitney is a concierge strength and conditioning coach in the greater Philadelphia area, and founder of Align The Grind, an online health and human performance platform for former collegiate athletes. Landmine Training was developed by former wrestler and collegiate football player, Alex Kanellis, to safely build explosive power and rotational strength.Power is the first quality to diminish as you age. After age 30, the ability to produce force with speed starts to decline, and decreases by 17% every decade after 40. Most people look to the Olympic Lifts to build power, but this takes years of practice and exceptional ranges of mobility that most people don't have. Landmine Training allows you to develop functional power safely, without years of practice or insane levels of mobility. It improves athletic performance, and overall health and longevity. It has unique ability to allow the user to use heavy loads to build explosive strength and power without the risk of other more technical methods, and with much less impact on the joints.Learn more about Landmine Training here!In this episode you will learn:What Landmine Training is exactly. The benefits of Landmine Training for anyone, but especially athletes and grapplers. How it's an effective alternative to the Olympic lifts. The importance of the “Spinal Engine Theory”How it improves injury prevention and longevity. How Landmine Training benefits grapplers specifically. The benefits to the core and trunkHow to get started with Landmine Training.Get the full show notes here.Learn more at seekprogress.com and follow us at @seek.progressSign up for weekly BJJ performance and longevity content here.

If you struggle with Oly Lifting, brace yourself because the following doesn't read nicely… You walk up to the barbell. This lift is always your biggest weakness. All you want is to succeed for once. But success is unpredictable for you. Will it be a good session or a bad one? You've already visualised missing the lift. The pressure is unbearable. You feel weak. Confidence through the floor. You tell yourself to drop the pressure, or just try and enjoy it, or maybe “just stop being so shit.” You've missed the lift before you've even touched the barbell. Which just proves to yourself the story that you're not good enough & you won't make your potential count. Ouch. Sorry to speak so bluntly, but if you're not going to look honestly at the problem, I will. Because if your mindset sucks, your lifting will suffer. And using discipline, aggressive self talk, and psyching yourself up will not be enough to change a story that lives deep in the recesses of your mind. Today, I'm going to teach you a four-part mindset checklist to improve your relationship with olympic lifting.

There's no doubt that Olympic lifting can help athletes build strength, speed, and power. But having successfully prepared players at every level from prep school to the pros, former Lakers S&C coach, TD Athletes Edge founder, and Basketball Strong Podcast co-host Dr. Tim DiFrancesco has seen that the risks often outweigh the rewards. Because of their long spines, legs, and arms, basketball players' bodies are typically ill-suited to the demands of the snatch and clean and jerk. Unlike some other team sports, they also need to develop fine motor skills. Plus, it can take years to master Olympic lifting, not to mention the difficulty of supervising large groups of players with just one or two sets of coaches' eyes. In addition to detailing such issues in more depth, TD provides viable alternatives to the Olympic lifts that every coach can put into practice. In this episode, TD shares: Why basketball players' bodies aren't usually suited to the snatch and clean and jerkHow S+C programs designed for football often don't translate well to basketball teamsWhy the steep learning curve of Olympic lifting - which is its own sport - is problematicWhat kinds of hinging and overhead pressing coaches can have basketball players perform instead of the Olympic lifts to provide the durability needed to excel on the courtWhich modalities can provide comparable increases in power, strength, and jumping ability without the downsidesHow and why TD talked Kobe out of Olympic lifts late in his career Learn more about developing basketball players' durability with the Basketball Strong online training program and TD's Instagram feed.

Steve Kamb of Nerd Fitness shares his experience with some Olympic lifts. Episode 443: Olympic Lifts - Run Faster and Jump Higher by Steve Kamb of Nerd Fitness (Working Out Like an Olympian). Steve Kamb started exercising back in high school without really knowing what he was doing. Through high school and college, he made every training mistake known to man and got zero results. It wasn't until he graduated college and learned the right way to train that he started to see positive changes. He's a nerd, but likes fitness… so why not combine the two and turn life into one giant video game? And thus, in the fall of 2009, NerdFitness.com was born!
