In this episode of the Cult Vault Podcast, I engage with author Bart Stewart, who discusses his novel 'The Contraption' and its exploration of cult dynamics. We delve into the historical evolution of cults, the societal neglect surrounding the issue, and the connections between cults and domestic abuse. Bart shares insights from his extensive research and personal experiences, emphasising the need for greater awareness and education on the subject. The conversation also touches on the challenges of promoting literature on cults and the importance of understanding psychological manipulation within these groups.Grab a copy of Bart's book - The Contraption eBook : Stewart, Barton Allen: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Storeand check out Bart's other writing - Amazon.co.uk: Barton Stewart: books, biography, latest updateGet in Touch or Support:Patreon - patreon.com/thecultvaultCrimecon UK 2025 - https://www.crimecon.co.uk - use code CULT for 10% off tickets!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cultvaultpod/Twitter: https://twitter.com/CultVaultPodReddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/Cult-VaultGmail: cultvaultpodcast@gmail.com
It's been an eventful week... David Mooney is joined by City fan Chris Higginbottom and, from Sporting News, Dom Farrell to try and sort out everything that's happened in the aftermath of the 2-2 draw with Arsenal and the 2-1 win over Watford. Dan Burke runs through everything that's been said from both camps after the Arsenal match, while we take a look at the 'dark arts', following the tetchy end to the match. Then there's Rodri's injury - did we get any clues how that issue can be covered over the last two fixtures? The Athletic's data maestro, Duncan Alexander, speaks to the show about the ridiculous record that Erling Haaland has since he arrived at City, while we also hear from Pod on the Tyne panelist and Athletic journalist Chris Waugh about Newcastle's start to the new season. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 15, 2023 is: contraption kun-TRAP-shun noun A contraption is a usually mechanical or electronic device or gadget. // The students worked as a team to create a Rube Goldberg contraption that can fill a pet food bowl at the press of a lever. See the entry > Examples: “In October of last year, an enormous new creature appeared on the seabed of the Pacific Ocean, about 1,400 miles southwest of San Diego. It was a remote-controlled, 90-ton machine the size of a small house, lowered from an industrial ship on a cable nearly 3 miles long. Once it was settled on the ocean floor, the black, white, and Tonka-truck-yellow contraption began grinding its way forward, its lights lancing through the darkness, steel treads biting into the silt.” — Vince Beister, WIRED, 28 Feb. 2023 Did you know? In the words of one Little Mermaid, “I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty.” It would have been on-theme (though perhaps a bit clunky) for the aquatic princess to include in her siren song the word contraption. Synonymous with both gadget and gizmo, and widget too, in referring to mechanical and electronic devices, contraption is also one of a raft of terms people reach for when talking about various human-made bits and bobs, whether mechanical or not. (It's thought to have possibly been formed as a blend of contrivance, trap, and invention.) Want more thingamabob words? Try doohickey, thingamajig, dingus, or doodad.

Last month I recorded a special episode of Checkpoints live from the All Your Base festival in Nottingham. One of my guests was Paul Kilduff-Taylor who I ended up hanging about with a bunch over the weekend and we had a lovely time so I asked him back for a full episode. Wholesome af.Paul is one of the co-founders of mode7 games - creators of Frozen Synapse and the upcoming Forzen Synapse 2 - and while music is his specialty, he has a hand in all aspects of design. In a wonderfully meandering chat we hit on some timely networking tips in the run up to GDC, how mash ups are the internet's first musical genre, sword fighting games for the Novint Falcon, the satisfaction of games that linger in your brain when you're not playing them, how much of a gamer his mum was growing up, the excellent music of Nintendo World Cup, why Half Life 2 maybe isn't as good as you think it is and Noel, the mysterious employee at a Canadian Electronics Boutique. A large, hardy, well-read and rather worn book full of writing and illustrations sits in front of the friends. They look over the fascinating book and marvel at the intermittent illustrations. The book has a solid binding, rippled pages, and is made mostly of lotus and papyrus. “I think this is the book that fell out of my bag at my Conclusion.” Flipping through the pages, Tonic sounds bewildered, “It's Graemes's journal! I didn't know Graemes kept a journal. I've seen the book on the shelf where Graemes always shoves stuff, but I never bothered to read it. It's all about traveling.”Prism points to a page and asks, quite puzzled, “What things are the worlds between?”Finding the spot in the book that the sprite is looking at, Tonic clarifies “the World's Between are the places where overlapping worlds connect. It is the ‘between' space of the worlds, like a doorway. Graemes describes the World's Between as… well, there is only so much space… I mean” Tonic tries again with a nose-wrinkle, “There is a lot of space Universe-wise, but the magic of life tends to cause clusters of reality. So where you have one world with enough magic for life, you get multiple realities overlapping.” Noticing the friends' confused expressions, Tonic continues “It is rather like when I put leaves in a big, open teapot.” The gnome opens the sourwood teapot on the table, and swirls the water and leaves inside by way of example. “There is plenty of water for the leaves to all spread out. But the leaves tend to cluster together” Tonic points to the settling sediment “they group up in the best spaces for tea leaves to be.”“And the universe is like that too!” Tonic continues enthusiastically. “The universe is like one big teapot, and the magic which supports life and stories settles like clusters of tea leaves!” Beaming at the demonstration, the gnome goes on. “Since there isn't room in one world (or section of teapot) for all of the realities (or tea-clusters) that settle there, the possibilities overlap, and the World's Between is how you get from one reality to another.” Proud of the metaphor, Tonic asks “Does that make sense?”Prism and Atcher think it over, exchanging looks.“Not really” Prism admits.“But we are glad you understand it!” Atcher enthuses.Reading quickly while flipping leaves furiously, Tonic motions to the journal between them, “It seems that Graemes wrote this tome while traveling, and it describes the World's Between, an astonishing array of folk, Wildlings, and the World of Myth.”Prism's eyes flash “Wait! ‘Wildlings'? Wasn't that the word your panel wrote in your Conclusion?” Atcher nods in surprise, with coppery-patina eyes shining, while taking the Bit back from Turbine, and tucking it securely into a belt pocket.Tonic agrees thoughtfully, “Yes, that's right. I think this book is just what I need. Remember when I was thinking about how much Graemes has traveled? How I wanted an adventure? But I put that aside to finish Craft Conclusions, and then there was so much to do I sort of forgot. Maybe it's time to try again. Who remembers the last time Graemes visited? And no one even knows exactly where Graemes's most recent adventure IS. I think this journal might help find our missing mentor.” Sprite, brownie, and gnome look over the journal, trying to decipher the point of it all. They peruse the journal, pausing at any story or illustration that catches their attention, and discover a kind of story to it, a story about lives and experiences. After some time, Tonic picks up the previous thought, “This journal is Graeme's story...Graeme's life. They might be the same thing.” Tonic's voice is full with a mix of respect and longing. “Graemes has met and spent time with a lot of people while traveling, and written the stories down. All these stories seem to say ‘I am here. They are here.' and illustrates that we all have stories; our lives are all stories to ourselves.”Tonic pauses, and Atcher and Prism watch their friend, who clearly has some big thoughts to express. Tonic rushes on, “I feel like my story hasn't gone anywhere. What have I learned? What narrative do I have? I want to meet some of the people written about in the journal, and learn more stories. I want to find Graemes. I want to travel and learn curious rituals and visit with uncommon folk!”Prism shifts uncomfortably, but waits for the gnome to finish.“I love my house, and my friends, my gardens and my work.” Tonic goes on “But I also want to experience what else is out there! Graemes has traveled so much, and I still live where I always have. Maybe it is time I go wander, go learn new things, meet strange situations. Graemes always said ‘Travel changes you' and I want to grow and change! I think it's time to go outside my comfortable and known.”Atcher and Prism look at each other in surprise, then Prism's stormy eyes look hard at the gnome. “That sounds like a Wanderlust.” The sprite's blue-grey hair ripples and froths with concern. “You just found your Craft! Don't you want to blend? You could create teas for the Samovar or the Curatives. Reading a book is one thing, a whole Wanderlust adventure is another thing.”Atcher's feet shift uneasily, and send the full belt jangling. “Remember those questions you asked us, before our Conclusions? About our passions and how we want to help the world? Your passion is tea. You want to help the world with healing blends and tasty steeping, don't you? Are you sure you want to leave just when you are about to start?” The brownie frets and crinkles a page of the birchbark journal.Tonic breathes in sharply, and ponders as Prism swims in sharp circles.Atcher whispers “You can't ignore a Wanderlust, though. You would lose your Drive and Spark; you would grey to dust if you did.”Prism nods decisively. “That's true, Atcher. A Wanderlust can't be ignored. Tonic, if you want to go, we support you. How can we help?”Tonic's persimmon eyes glow with determination. “Your support means a lot; let's make some journey preparations!”“We should gather knowledge, skills, and supplies” Atcher states. “Let's bring Graemes's journal, for sure. We should take maps, and good boots and coats. I will groom my Sudden Ideas, and look for Bits and Pieces.”Prism swirls with excitement, and pipes up “We will need to know where we are going and how to get there, good thinking. We will also need to find food, drink, and safety on the journey. I can train our Wind Rabbits for communication, in case we get separated. And they can cool us and brace us along!”As Tonic starts to speak, a curious thing occurs.A small magic stirs around the room, glittering in the sunlight, swirling against everyone, then bursting into light. Tonic stands up straight, patting both brown-green hair puffs nervously. “Well, that seems a propitious start to our adventure. Something magic just happened. I hope it's helpful.” Looking around the garden, Tonic asks, “Bramble, will you watch over the gardens? I don't know anyone who can care for them better!” The blackberry plant curls a tendril in the breeze. “Thank you.” Tonic responds, while packing the Mighty Teaspoon Hammer for the trip. All three friends positively fizz with energy, excited to go, though none of them yet know where. Prism muses, “I know Clover has to keep working with the Marzipandas. That pooka will have no time for a Wanderlust, but I bet Clover could check on Bramble while we're gone, and help out with your garden.”Atcher breaks off a small willow and weaves a new hair tie. “It helps to have a companion or two on a journey, so I'm glad we are all together.. Oohh! Prism, you said safety, which reminds me; we can take my new Contraption!” the brownie dances with delight “It's a Night Tent, and can convert into a boat! But also, it sometimes turns into a squashed sandwich.”The trio begin tidying, packing, and generally preparing the house and garden. Prism sends Undertow to deliver the request about Bramble to Clover. Scones are baked, plants pruned, prunes planted, books organized, and lists made. Atcher follows a Sudden Idea to the East window and takes some measurements, announcing, “I already made a Scrubby Bubbleup to clean the cauldrons, and fixed a geode basin so it would leak for the roaming Click Fish.”The friends work and pack, and ensure everyone's homes are cared for, before deciding they are as prepared as they can be for the unknown. Looking at the seafoam satchel, peach pack, and bronze bag, Atcher wonders “Well-packed is good, but then what? How do we start our adventure? Which direction do we go? We don't have any clues…” The brownie heads home, with a head full of worries, and finds sleep difficult that night.

We depart a bit in this episode to feature a filmmaker instead of a drummer. Jeremy Bout, a prolific filmmaker, speaker and overall inspiring individual, is the founder of Edge Factor, whose mission is to “inspire and equip communities through the power of storytelling.” The story Jeremy talks with us about here is his incredible film, Masters of Resonance, which features the story of John Good of DW drums and the journey of a centuries old log from river to rock stage. The film is actually way more nuanced than that, but it’s something you have to experience. For it’s not only about the building a a great DW kit for famed drummer Neil Peart, but also an inspiring story of following one’s passion, whether that be drumming, drum making, or any other thing you call your own. I first learned about Masters of Resonance while doing the first interview for Contraption, which was with drummer Paul Wertico. I had actually interviewed Paul the day after he returned from LA as a panel member for a screening of Masters of Ressonance, in which he appears. Jeremy was happy to share his story and the story of the film, which I encourage you to see.
Originally from Connecticut, drummer/drum educator Craig Pilo graduated from the University of North Texas in 1995 and began life as a working musician in LA a year later. One of his earliest gigs was with trumpeter Maynard Ferguson! He’s also worked with Pat Boone, Edgar Winter and was on tour for several years with rock and roll Hall of Fame’s Frankie Valli. Craig continues to work with the group Little Fish, as well as Player, which became famous for the song "Baby, Come Back." He also keeps a busy schedule recording and teaching, including a faculty position with the California School of Music. Having studied with Alan Dawson, Ed Soph, Dave Weckl and Jeff Hamilton, to name just a few, Craig’s professional work and lifelong teaching and learning makes for a wonderful interview for Contraption’s new and returning drummers.
There are many reasons so many drummers respect Ra-Kalam Bob Moses. His seminal book Drum Wisdom brought out his 8/8 concept of playing to resolution points. His ground-breaking 1973 album, Bittersuite in the Ozone, marked the start of a solo recording career that continues through this day. He's worked with some of the most respected names in jazz, including playing with Jaco Pastorious on Pat Metheny's classic 1976 debut album, Bright Size Life. The godson of Ed Shaughnessy, young Bob Moses was fortunate to grow up in the same building with such greats as Max Roach, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. Admittedly getting into drums as a young teen to impress others, he soon was inspired by seeing Coltrane and realized that music was about much more than what people thought or admired. From that point on, Bob Moses began playing music from the heart, music that could fill the world with much needed love. In a world of fakes and copies, Ra-Kalam honors his own heroes by going his own way in life, music and art. In this very special episode of Contraption, I am honored to talk with Ra-kalam Bob Moses, who shares stories of his past, news of his current and upcoming work, and his overall “drum wisdom.”
Chris and Mads dive into contraption making with The Incredible Machine. Plus we find the winner of our competition, reveal the game of February, and the list of games to vote on for March.
There are few musicians who, although strongly associated with a particular instrument, transcend that instrument to exhibit an overall musicality. It’s not about technique, proficiency or virtuosity -- It’s about serving the song as the music pours out of every pore of his or her body. Jaco Pastorious was such a musician – the man who changed the role of the bass and the way it’s played. Tied to that iconic sunburst Fender jazz that he personally defretted, Jaco went beyond the bass – he was the music. Johnny Vidacovich, today’s guest on Contraption, is that same kind of musician. An incredible drummer in the tradition of New Orleans hitters like Zigaboo, Herlin Riley and Stanton Moore, Johnny goes beyond the drums to infuse every set and song he plays with that rare musicality that touches those he plays with and those he plays for. Johnny credits growing up in New Orleans and hearing the sounds and beats of the bands that passed his modest childhood home. It began, he says, during his infancy, before he could walk or read. It’s part of his DNA – part of his very soul. You’d think someone as gifted and talented as Johnny Vidacovich had set out his whole life to be a working musician, but he was working as a drummer without really thinking about it as a career – that was until his daughter was born when he was 31. The truth of the matter is Johnny has worked hard – very hard – for his legendary reputation. Taking lessons with New Orleans drummer Charlie Suchor after getting his first drum kit when he was twelve, that eventually led him to a life changing offer as a high schooler… It should be noted that Johnny was happy to talk with us – he loves to share his story and his ideas related to playing – to be a musician. So all I can say is I’m humbled and honored and so appreciative to have had this time with Johnny to share with all of you.
This week, we were blessed to be joined again by John Crowder. He rocked us once again in his usual style by challenging our view of theology. Even though everybody has a theology, it may not line up with the real good news of the Gospel.

Part 1. What exactly does the Buddy Pegs bike shop look like anyway? Well, in Part 1 of this 2 part episode you can take a look for yourself! The Buddy pegs crew takes you on a tour of the shop complete with Schmiddy’s fantastical contraptions like the Repair Bike Check-in-omatic 4000 (RBC4K for short), and a garage door opener like you’ve never seen before. Oh, and the best part… wait until you hear about the secret entrance to the underground part of Buddy Pegs! Only Watson, Wrigley, and Schmiddy know about that… and now you too! Lessons Learned: Slowing down to finish what you started. The importance of teamwork. Words to Explore: Contraption Constellation Suspended Simultaneously Tips For Your Family Ride: Do you and your kids safety check your bikes before each ride? Well there’s no better time to start than today! Before each ride, make sure: Handlebars are tight Wheels are on tight Brakes are working properly Tires are inflated Chains are lubed Click Here to Watch a PRO PARENT Tip video on how to safety check your kiddos bike! Have a safe ride and help your kids build habits they can carry over into all areas of their lives. Remember, check yourself before you wreck yourself! Written by Scott Fitzgerald and Bob Berky Performed by Scott Fitzgerald, Bob Berky, and Jannine Fitzgerald. Written for kids 7 & under but safe and fun for kids of all ages. Read Full Show Notes HERE. Check out all of our episodes at BUDDYPEGS.COM/PODCAST Creator Notes: When we wrote this episode we had four things in mind: Describe the shop in more detail (in the past we’ve spent a lot of time describing the characters who work at Buddy Pegs, but not the shop itself). Explain more of the “character flaws” of Watson, the dalmation who is co-owner of Buddy Pegs. Introduce the underground lair beneath Buddy Pegs. Lay the groundwork for an adventure and bigger theme that will evolve in Part 2 of this episode. Buddy Pegs is not your typical bike shop and we had a blast thinking up all the crazy contraptions that Schmiddy the dog, the cat has built over the years and we’re only getting started. Of course these are the gadgets we wish we had in our bike shop! Imagine an automated track system that quickly moved bikes around the shop - bring it on! Watson is perhaps your typical bike shop owner… if you’re describing me when I was a shop owner. Always moving to the next thing and not slowing down long enough to complete a task has consequences. Boy did I learn that the hard way. And so will Watson in Part 2! We really hope this supports the conversations you’re already having with your kids about the importance of stopping to finish a task and clean up before rushing into the next “thing”. But we can’t have a teaching moment without a little drama and intrigue can we? Finally we get to show you the Buddy Pegs underground lair! As you’ve heard in past episodes, Schmiddy is the mastermind behind Poppawheelie and Captain Endo’s super gadgets. But where and when does Schmiddy make them? Well below Buddy Pegs in his master workshop of course! We have some great things to show you in Part 2…. Just don’t expect any Batmobiles. And finally, what does “check yourself before you wreck yourself” really mean? As you can imagine, Watson is in for a life lesson in Part 2 that will make it all clear. Until then… keep your thumbs up and the rubber side down. ~Fitzy

Eaves drop on a private conversation between 2 humans (us) who are working through living life and re-establishing routine. This is the conversation that surrounds the conflict and clash of 2 worlds, adventure vs. routine...hum....don't worry we end with fun stories about my small bladder and a wonderful human who made an epic contraption in Rincon! We survived our first week of school and the podcast launch! Charles and I talk through the recreation of our lives and the activities that we want to be a part of, it may or may not get a lil heated! Does life ever look different than how you imagined it? Charles goes through some of those "images" that he believed we would have. We talk through extra curricular activities and some of the emotional aspects of this experience. When you imagine something in life does not always mean that is what it will look like. For Charles, he thought this 6 months would be different, maybe even one long vacation. We take a deep breath and talk about the cool new experiences we are having here in Puerto Rico. If you are curious about how we have transitioned to life here, this is a good one to listen to. Foundations of Amateur Radio Today I'm going to talk about dipoles. You know the tried and true antenna, the go-to design for getting on air, the simple first antenna you ever make, the one you learn from, you know the one. It's the mainstay of every amateur, of any field-day, of all things Amateur Radio. It's a simple thing. Using metric, rather than imperial measurements, but the point stands, you use the speed of light in vacuum divided by the required operating frequency and you get the overall wave length for that frequency. In absolute terms, roughly 300 m/s divided by 50 MHz, gives you 6 meters. Surprise, that's the band name for 50 MHz. Now the dipole is a half-wave contraption, so, 6 meters divided by 2 gives you 3 meters for your total half-wave dipole. Each leg is half that, a quarter wave length, so you have 3 meters divided by 2 again and you end up with two bits of wire, a meter and a half long each. If you're following along, that's 300 divided by 50 divided by 2 divided by 2, or using the same numbers in a slightly different order, 300 divided by 2 divided by 2 divided by 50 MHz, or 75 divided by 50 MHz. Still one and a half meters per leg of your shiny new dipole. So, the basic formula for a metric dipole can be stated as 75 divided by the frequency in MHz per leg. If you're playing with feet and inches, 300 m/s becomes 984 ft/s, half that is 492, half that is 246 feet, so the imperial version is 246 divided by the frequency in MHz, gives you length in feet for each leg. So, you've cut your wires, tied them to some magical feed point contraption, plug it into your radio and you're good to go, right? Now, anyone who's actually done this knows that this is not what will actually happen. It's never that simple, and frankly if it were, we wouldn't be Amateurs, we'd be, unlicensed or something. So, what affects the actual length of this magical antenna? Lots and lots of things. Here are a few that come to mind: - The thickness of the wire you're using. - The thickness of the insulation on the wire. - A thing called the end-effect. - The height of the contraption above the ground. - The kind of ground. - The price of the copper you're using. Sorry that last one isn't right. I have been told, time and time again that there are only two kinds of wire, cheap wire and free wire. The preference is for the latter. So, price of the copper doesn't matter. Another thing that does matter is that some wire can stretch while in the air, making the antenna longer, so keep that in mind. Fine and well I hear you say. But how does this really matter? If you increase the thickness of the wire, the resonant frequency goes down, that is, the antenna is "too long". If you increase the thickness of the insulation, the resonant frequency goes down as well. The end-effect is like adding a capacitor to the end of the wire, making it "longer" as well. The height effect is different for each height. Generally the effect is that the antenna resonates at a lower frequency. Each type of ground has a different amount of effect. Water vs rock vs sand vs clay. I can hear you groan at this point. First comment to make is that all of these effects make the antenna resonate at a lower frequency. This means that the suggestion to cut your antenna longer than the calculated number doesn't make much sense. If you start with the basic calculation, 75 divided by the frequency in MHz, you'll end up with an antenna that's extremely likely to be too long. I can hear you screaming at me right about now. Hold your tar and feathers. I gave you the First comment. Here's a Second one. If you don't have space for a straight dipole, say, you need to go around a corner, or put a bend in the wire, all of what I just said goes out the window. If you put this above a metal roof, poof, also out the window. If you cannot terminate the wire to a rope without bending the end of the wire, poof. A Third comment. You cannot cut wire longer. You can only cut it shorter. Cutting it longer is called soldering and that's a whole 'nother thing. Let me finish with some tips for new players. Don't ever cut your wire. It won't work like you expect and it will only give you more work. Always, always, always, fold your wire back over itself and wind it back over the end. If you leave it dangling you're adding capacitance and doing all manner of other weird stuff to your antenna. Also, if you need extra length because the 80m dipole just won't fit into the back yard, you can use the end capacitance to good effect, hang it down towards the ground and you'll end up with an antenna more to your liking. Final comment and then you can start sending me emails about how I'm wrong. The humble dipole antenna is a magnificent contraption. It has more variables than you can poke a stick at and anyone who tells you that it's just a case of calculating this by doing a simple division hasn't got the faintest idea of what's actually going on. There are times when simplification is helpful. This is not one of those times. So, have fun, play with your dipole, try different things and observe the differences when you try different things. I've spoken with Amateurs who've been doing this longer than I've been alive and they still can't calculate the actual length of a dipole, put it in the air and have it work first time. Sometimes you get lucky. More practice, more luck. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
