IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Rebecca has an amazing story because she is an amazing person! She turned to the comfort of food in an attempt to find self-worth. Once she reached a certain weight she correlated her size and weight with her worth. So what makes her so amazing? Her ability and willingness to be honest with herself and have the courage to do whatever it took to change her life around. In doing so, Rebecca lost weight, regained her energy, and found a new love for food in her life. Happy ending right? Well, what you will learn about Rebecca might surprise you. Even after losing over 120 pounds, Rebecca continues to struggle from time to time as we all do. Rebecca is a real person with real feelings, issues, and hardships. She has found her way to live with these imperfections and become the master of her life not the victim of it. Rebecca provided the following Tips and Tricks specifically for the listeners of Change Your POV Podcast! General Meal-Building Suggestions: When putting together a meal, I like to think of a protein, veggie (or 2!), a fat, and a fruit. It's so simple! - For breakfast, I might choose eggs, spinach and onions, avocado, and some berries for breakfast. - For lunch or dinner, I might choose something like chicken, spiralized zucchini noodles, roasted veggies, pesto (dairy-free), and I'd probably skip fruit with a meal like this. My Favorite Ways to Eat Veggies: - Roast them! I love to roast sweet potatoes (cut up into chips or fries), broccoli & garlic cloves with olive oil and a drizzle of balsamic, etc. - Spiralize them! Check out www.inspiralized.com for paleo recipes using a spiralizer. You can buy one on that website or on Amazon. Turning vegetables into noodles is literally the best thing ever. Over the next 4 weeks, Bennet and I will be taking a look at topics that Transitioning Veterans may deal with at some point in their life post-military. I know I get bombarded by this all the time too! Have you ever stopped and wondered if everyone that claims to be suffering from PTSD really has PTSD? If it's not PTSD, but there is clearly an issue going on, then what is it? A rather new term is on the horizon that not many are talking about and that is Moral Injury. So what is Moral Injury? Giving up your identity and perceived value in the military to take on being a single father wasn't an easy decision at first for Adam. Once this Hour of Decision came he knew he had one chance to make the right decision and that was to be the Father to his son he knew he needed to be. Once the decision was made Adam realized that his perceived value did not come from his uniform, or under his Sergeant Stripes, or draped under this nation's flag with a commitment to his country sworn by an oath. His actual value was in raising a young boy into a worthy man someday. This legacy is where true value and honor is found. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Four things Adam recommends to all service members as they embark on their journey of separation from military service: Ensure your medical paperwork is in order before you separate, you will need them once you get out. Research a career field prior to separation and have an idea of what you want to do once you get out. Get some education before you get out. College credits, certificates look into some trade jobs, and see what education you could earn before you get out. Build and nurture your network. Start with a solid Linkedin Profile and begin to reach out to other people in the career field you are interested in getting into. This is the second part in a 4-part series dedicated to the Transitioning Veteran. This week Bennett and I sit down and discuss some false expectations Veterans often face, and how you can manage those expectations. Separating from the military is difficult enough but now throw all kinds of false hopes and dreams on that fire and before you know it your spirit is shot and things start to look really bleak! This episode is not designed to crush anyone's hopes and dreams, but Bennett and I do give you a healthy dose of reality. “At the end of the day” no one owes you anything, the civilian world just doesn't care about your service as much as you do, and there aren't thousands of jobs just waiting for you when you get out. Keeping it real! IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: There are three primary paths folks take when they separate from military service: Education – This can be full-time at a college or university in an actual degree program. This could also mean taking classes courses and or certificates for a particular industry or trade. It is important to understand what education path you want to pursue prior to separation. Employee – Many seek employment once they separate and go right back to work. Know and understand what you want to do, where you want to do it, and have a read on several opportunities. Don't rely on just one potential job when you get out, it may not be available once you finally separate. Entrepreneur – Finally, an option post-military is to go into business for yourself and be your own boss. There is a lot of freedom in this but it is extremely difficult and requires a tremendous amount of tenacity, grit, and good ‘ole fashioned hard ass work! On this episode of Change Your POV Podcast we talk about Acronyms. anyone who has served knows how full your vocabulary can get with acronyms and trust me we even have acronyms for acronyms. The point of course in the military is to shorten communication so you can relay information quickly and with terms everyone can recognize. Now it's time to transition out of the military and you bring all these fancy acronyms with you into your new civilian job. You guessed it, now one can understand what you are saying and it inevitably isolates you from everyone else. Hope you enjoy the show! For those of you that have never served and are curious about what some of these acronyms are I speak of you can check out this very colorful book. (probably not suitable for children). Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: The Real Language of the Modern American Military Few areas of human endeavor have produced more—or more colorful—terms than has the military. Soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen have over centuries come up with words, phrases, and acronyms to express everything from raw emotion to complex technology. The military is both a distinctive way of life and a community, and a command of its slang is essential to admission to full membership within the group. Most military slang is almost always familiar only to the troops. Mating mosquitoes, for example, refers to the two-chevron insignia of the Army corporal. Gadget describes an enlisted man or woman who is temporarily promoted to a position of increased responsibility to fill an urgent need, while a panty raid is a foray into enemy territory for the purpose of gathering evidence of adversary activity. Among the less delicate entries are the day the eagle shits, or payday, and skimmer puke, a submariner's term for any surface ship sailor. (And then there's the book's title, the acronym for What The F-ck). Many elements of military vocabulary have become part of our national speech: John Wayne, boondocks, attaboy, and hot dog. But whether the words and phrases are the exclusive property of our fighting men and women or are also in general use, the “real” language of the modern military set forth in this lively book embodies a uniquely American attitude and an exuberantly colloquial, unwaveringly honest, and enduringly American grace under pressure.
