Thinking LSAT
When Should I Take the LSAT? (ep. 395)

Thinking LSAT

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2023 86:14

Novice LSAT students often sign up for test dates before they've even started studying. Today on the show, Ben and Nathan explain why it's a mistake to register for the LSAT prematurely. They share the correct order of operations for deciding when to take the LSAT and apply to law school: (1) study for the LSAT, (2) sign up when you're happy with your practice score range, and (3) apply with your best LSAT score on record, at the beginning of the cycle. Plus, the guys answer listener questions about LSAT Writing, GPA addenda, scholarship negotiations, and more. LSAT Demon LSAT Demon iOS App LSAT Demon Daily Watch Episode 395 on YouTube Thinking LSAT YouTube LSAT Demon YouTube 0:00 - Don't Register Until You're Ready - The June LSAT registration deadline is coming up. But the test isn't going anywhere. Ben and Nathan encourage listeners to register for an official LSAT only when your practice scores indicate that you're ready to take the test. 1:38 - Don't Rush Into Law School - An anonymous listener asks Nathan and Ben if applying to attend law school right after undergrad will put them at a disadvantage compared to applicants who gain work experience before applying. Ben and Nathan pontificate about how admissions committees might view “KJD” applicants. But, they maintain, the most significant application factors are still LSAT and UGPA. Everyone should take the time they need to get their highest LSAT score. For many, that means waiting a year or more to apply. The guys also offer some general advice to young listeners: people change a lot in their twenties. They'd rather see you take time to find a job and work for a few years before returning to school. 19:53 - Your Negotiation Power - An anonymous applicant asks for scholarship negotiation advice. They've received multiple scholarship offers (including some full rides), but they have their sights set on a specific school that gave them a lower offer. Ben and Nathan share the most important factor in negotiation: your willingness to say no. As long as you're willing to walk away, there's always room to negotiate. 26:52 - UGPA Application Addendum - An anonymous listener asks Ben and Nathan for advice on how to write an addendum about their UGPA. Anonymous did a lot of extracurricular activities in undergrad that might have caused their grades to suffer. Ben and Nathan caution applicants against making excuses. Put your best foot forward on your law school applications by highlighting your strengths, not your weaknesses. 36:20 - LSAT Writing Is Unscored - Listener Todd wonders what he should do to prepare for the writing portion of the LSAT. Ben and Nathan advise him not to waste too much time on it—your time is better spent preparing for the scored sections. You can watch a Demon lesson for just a few minutes and complete the LSAT writing portion online as soon as it's available to you. 42:11 - LSAT Order of Operations - Listener Michael signed up for the April LSAT before he started studying. The guys discuss why Michael, like many novice students, went about his LSAT journey in the wrong order. Students should begin studying for the LSAT first. Take your studying seriously. Then, when you're happy with your practice score range, sign up for the next official test date. 51:50 - Take the LSAT as Soon as You're Ready - Student Aiden has been using the Demon for only two weeks and is currently scoring in the upper 150s. He's shooting for a score in the 170s and asks the guys if they think he can get there in a year. Nathan and Ben are confident Aiden can reach the 170s, especially if he can perfect his games. They encourage him to take the test when he's ready—which might be a lot sooner than a whole year from now. 56:58 - Don't Lie on Your Resume 1:03:43 - Law School Employment Outcomes 1:12:56 - Get a Job 1:18:53 - Don't Apply Before You're Ready

If you want to be a fantastic leader, today's conversation is perfect for you. My guest is Priya Ramesh. Priya is a Master Certified Coach and that in itself, I think is a pretty big deal, there are only 70 MCC's in India and  only 1,327 wordwide.  Priya was my Mentor Coach during my Coaching Certification Program and I have learnt so much from her. Today, the tables have turned, I'm the one asking the questions, and I know this will be such a valuable conversation In this episode, Priya and I talk about:- What Priya's original plans were upon graduating from university, and what actually ended up happening in reality- What has been the most transformative position Priya has held in your career, and how she got there- They say a shoemaker's children usually go barefoot. Being a coach and helping and guiding so many thousands of people, doesn't always translate to helping yourself objectively. How can someone listening today, who is heavily in that service mindset, put on their own oxygen mask first?- What it's really like being a Leadership Coach and what are some of the traits of a top coach- Priya's own coaching model the beautifully encapsulates the coach/client relationship. My South Asian listeners will particularly enjoy this one, and the rest will learn two new Sanskrit wordsLearn more about Priya by visiting her LinkedIn profile and website:https://www.linkedin.com/in/priya-ramesh-mcc-leadership-coach-b015119/https://orenda.net.in/ -----------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? My guest today is Andy Griffiths. If you haven't heard of Andy, and if you have kids/nephews/nieces, there's a good chance you've heard of the Treehouse Books: the 13 Storey Treehouse, 26 Storey Treehouse and so many more. These books are created by New York Times bestselling team Andy Griffiths who is the writer and Terry Denton, the illustrator.  Andy Griffiths is one of Australia's most popular children's authors. He and Terry have collaborated on more than 33 bestselling books since 1997. In Australia, Andy and Terry's books have sold over 10 million copies, won innumerable awards including Book of the Year. Their Treehouse Series in particular have been embraced by children around the world and now published in more than 35 countries. Five of the books in the series have been adapted for the stage and have all had sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera house, as well as highly successful seasons in the Netherlands, New Zealand and the US.  I've brought Andy to the podcast for so many reasons: to learn about Andy's career, because it is a prime example of squiggly career path vs a career ladder that we've all believed to be true for so long, and this is such a valuable episode.  In this episode, Andy takes us behind the scenes and shares what real life was like, before being 'discovered' by Macmillan Publishers. Andy shares his stories of courage, heartbreak, rejection and how that journey brought him closer to his current success. We also talk about how he and Terry achieved global success in their fifties and sixties, and what that means in the world today that is quite obsessed with youth. We also talk about 'cotton wool' childhoods and why Andy is so vocal about it on social media.Whether or not you have children, nephews or nieces, I know this will prove to be a valuable listen. Learn more about Andy and his books here: http://www.andygriffiths.com.au/-------------------------Liked this episode? Negotiations continue on Capitol Hill over President Joe Biden's health agenda — along with a long list of other items. With Republicans on the sidelines, liberal Democrats delayed a House vote on a Senate-passed infrastructure bill to extract moderates' support for a social-spending bill that includes expansions of benefits for Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Meanwhile, the Biden administration's new rules to prevent “surprise” medical bills pleases some health stakeholders and angers others. Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Tami Luhby of CNN and Kimberly Leonard of Insider join KHN's Julie Rovner to discuss these issues and more. Also, Rovner interviews Anna Flagg of the Marshall Project about how a century-old report on medical education contributed to racial inequities that persist today. Laura Berman Fortgang is recognised as a pioneer in the personal coaching field and part of the founding team of the International Coach Federation. She has brought coaching to NASA, Florida’s State Government and dozens of Fortune 500 companies.   She has made appearances on Oprah, Good Morning America and CNN, amongst others, as well as publishing five best-selling books including ‘Now What? 90 Days to a New Life Direction’ and ‘The Little Book On Meaning’. And in 2015 she gave a TEDx talk titled ‘How to Find Your Dream Job Without Ever Looking at Your Resume’ which has been viewed more than 1.5 million times.   Laura joins Phil to discuss why the roadmap to your future is never in your current resumè. Laura also talks about why we should trust our instincts when it comes to shaping our IT career.   KEY TAKEAWAYS:   TOP CAREER TIP Don’t look at your resume in order to find the next step in your career if you’re not happy with the role you’re currently performing. It’s only a chronological case study of the road you’ve taken so far, and doesn’t provide insight into where you’re headed.   WORST CAREER MOMENT As a former actor, Laura gave her everything during a performance and was met by a damning response by an audience member. From this she learned to never take rejection personally.   CAREER HIGHLIGHT Meeting Oprah Winfrey was the highlight of Laura’s career and taught her much about confidence and nerves, and how to handle the intimidation that many must have felt in that position.   THE FUTURE OF CAREERS IN I.T Longevity and innovation is abundant. The challenge will be in how the industry scales, and what the next generation of professionals looks like. Seeing how the people in the industry age and grow will be fascinating to watch.   THE REVEAL What first attracted you to a career in I.T.? – What’s the best career advice you received? – Be the best at what you do and be as single-minded as possible. What’s the worst career advice you received? – What would you do if you started your career now? – Laura would worry less and compare herself to others less. What are your current career objectives? – Scaling her business from doing one-on-one training to one-on-many training scenarios. What’s your number one non-technical skill? – Communication skills have been key to helping Laura build her business. How do you keep your own career energized? – Reading and learning are a marvellous way of keeping our skills fresh. What do you do away from technology? – Children taken up much of Laura’s time. Her other passion is crochet.   FINAL CAREER TIP Honour those inklings inside you that tell you something inside of you is trying to evolve. Follow the small voices that try to guide you.   BEST MOMENTS   (10:14) – Laura - “We’re all supposed to be grownups and professionals and know our expertise, but in the end we’re just people” (6:29) – Laura - “If there’s anyone out there thinking that they want to make a change, then your resume isn’t going to have the answer’ (14:40) – Laura – “Be the best at what you do. Be single-minded, and that doesn’t mean to compete with anyone other than yourself” (16:00) – Laura – “If you create extraordinary results, that’s your own marketing. That’s your PR”   ABOUT THE HOST – PHIL BURGESS   Phil Burgess is an independent IT consultant who has spent the last 20 years helping organizations to design, develop, and implement software solutions.  Phil has always had an interest in helping others to develop and advance their careers.  And in 2017 Phil started the I.T. Your Resume, 2. Your Cover Letter and 3. Your Email. Be sure to think about how you want your story to be told and do not just list a bunch of facts.  Craft a story that is engaging and will make someone want to read about it. And if you want to play around with a cool tool, check out: http://www.wordle.net/ It will create a word cloud of a written document.  Put your resume, or your cover letter, or any other written documentation that you are using in your job search, into the application, and see if the word cloud agrees with the key points that you are trying to convey. Good luck with telling your personal story in written form.

Hi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp…. Wait for it… Vice President of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast. Not sure that rolls off the tongue yet, I need to work on the new title. I was in such a routine saying director of content for WorkinSports.com ...I could say it in my sleep. We have a lot to talk about today. First what the heck does it mean that engaged learning is on my title now?Well, outside of my work on the podcast I've been working in developing online courses as part of our plans to educate our audience on WorkinSports.com. I've been developing content for 6 years now, with over 500 blog posts and approaching 200 podcast episodes...but we wanted to ramp things up a bit, and online learning is the way. We've just launched our first four courses under our Work in Sports Academy courses are perfectly targeted for college-age students, or people trying to change careers into the sports industry. In these courses I'm not teaching you how to sell tickets, or scout a prospect - I am teaching you the tactics and strategies behind getting hired. Course 1: Gaining the RIGHT experienceCourse 2: Building and Maintaining your NetworkCourse 3: Your Resume, Cover Letter, and Personal brandCourse 4: Interviewing for Jobs and Internships. You can purchase them individually based on your needs… or bundle them as a package and buy all four for a discounted price. I'm pretty pumped about this -- and it is why my title now includes Engaged Learning. Now, on to today's subject. We need to discuss Authentic Communication -- because I fear I have failed all of you and it's been bothering me all weekend. So I get this promotion and I update my LinkedIn profile. I'm a LinkedIn addict, this is very normal behavior for an addict. As you all know LinkedIn makes your change in title a news item on your connections notifications pages. So, I have 5,600 ish connection and the onslaught of messages begins. Now, before I get into my rant I want to make something really clear - I appreciate all the well wishes, I really do and I am not scolding people for saying “Congrats on your promotion!”BUT, we need to really think about our actions. Ok, so dialing back a second, after the promotion gets posted on LinkedIn I've had 1084 reactions -- that's messages, likes etc. 1084 people did something related to this notice. There were 4 types of responses:1: An open-ended response2: A customized response3: An autoresponder response4: A simple like of the status update.Let's break these down a bit and get at the root of their purpose, thoughtfulness, and impact - starting with the open-ended response. This is the best of the best. Someone responded something like “Whoa, this is great news congratulations… so what kind of new responsibilities will you have?”Why is this the best? Because it actually engages your subject in real, authentic communication. Asking a question is the best way to get a thoughtful response, show you actually care about the person and prove you aren't just blitzing through the networking steps. If you want to build relationships with people, that have depth and meaning, you need to ask more questions about the other person. Get them talking and sharing and explaining. They just got promoted, they are excited! Take advantage of their opportunity to deepen their relationship with you. Out of 1084 people do you know how many people did this? How many people asked me a customized open-ended question? One. Jess Dewell, you are the big winner. Jess asked “Congrats on the promotion! What is the most exciting part of this new role?”This led to an actual real-life conversation between the two of us. That is the goal! Right? Isn't it? If it isn't the goal, I'd like someone to explain to me what their goal is.Now, Before I get all bonkers on autoresponders -- I want to say, just barely a step below that is what most of you that listen to this podcast did. Most of you are really kind, smart people,

All podcasts in April, May, and June will be focused around the theme “College Graduation, 2019 Edition.” At this time each year, I concentrate on topics to help that year's crop of graduating college seniors. Of course, everything I talk about will apply to those of you who have been out in the workforce for a few years, as well. In April, I will be covering resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles. These are your primary marketing documents in a job search. Point #1 – Your Resume is a Marketing Document Here's what most of you have for a resume, unless you've worked with me already: a descriptive document. I call it a “data sheet.” Your document tells the reader where and when you worked, what your job duties were, and what your job title was. Lather, rinse, and repeat. From a marketing standpoint, that's like describing a product's features, but not its benefits. These shoes have shoelaces. This sofa is covered in dark brown fabric. This refrigerator has an ice maker. An employer needs to know what your job duties were in each position, to be sure, but what they also need to know is how well you performed the job. From a marketing standpoint, these are your benefits. Here's what this might look like: These shoes have interchangeable shoelaces that can match any outfit you have in your wardrobe – you'll be the most stylish woman at the coffee shop! The color of this sofa means stains and dirt will practically disappear! This refrigerator's ice maker is in the door, which will save you approximately $125 a year on electricity costs! How does this translate to your resume? Here are a few bullets from resumes I've written for my clients: - Developed and implemented a mentoring program that reduced General Manager turnover 4% and saved $240k in recruiting and onboarding costs. -Completed approximately 60 engagements thus far, encompassing weddings, graduations, birthdays, house parties, and bars/clubs. (This client started his own DJ business) -Maintained 100% accuracy with approximately 70 closing packages totaling $24.5M. (This client had his own business assembling mortgage loan packages) - Conducted a Facebook e-mail campaign that resulted in 3,000+ likes within three days and increased engagement to 11%. -Realized 20% volume growth over previous year with KTM bike retail marketing program at key convenience retailer Super America.   Notice how many of these accomplishments have numbers. Whether your achievements lend themselves to dollars, percentages, number of participants, or volume, whenever you can quantify your achievements you take that statement to another level. Point #2 – Your Resume Reflects Your Brand I've said this one before, but it bears repeating: To truly differentiate yourself in your resume, you must tell the reader what you bring to the table that no other candidate will have. What you can do for them that no other candidate will be able to do. What makes you uniquely qualified for the position you are applying for. During the resume-writing process with my clients, I ask them why an employer should hire them over all the other candidates. I often get generic answers like “I'm a hard worker,” “I'm a team player,” or “I have a degree in _____.” Let's go back to thinking of yourself as a product. A product that can communicate with you. You walk up to those athletic shoes, introduce yourself, and ask them why you should buy them. The shoes respond with “Because I have a sole, shoelaces, and a vamp.” You're not going to choose to buy those particular shoes because of their sole, shoelaces, and vamp. You're going to choose to buy a particular pair of shoes because they are the right type of shoe for the athletic activity you plan to do, because they feel good on your feet, because they have proper arch support, because they are warm enough or cool enough for your weather, and because they look good on your feet. These are the things that differentiate one pair of athletic shoes from another. They all have soles, shoelaces (unless they are velcro), and a vamp. Back to you as a product you are offering to employers. Why should they buy you over the sea of applicants clamoring for this position? Here are a couple of excerpts from resumes I've written for my clients: -Entrusted with more than 500 customers including Target—one of the company's largest customers globally—serving as the face company X with many key relationships. -Offering a diverse background spanning entrepreneurship, office management, heavy equipment operations, and entertainment. -Strong background in global supply chain strategies, business analytics, and innovative go-to-market approaches that generate industry-leading results. - Attained 3.96 GPA at Southern New Hampshire University while working full-time and part-time jobs—demonstrating high motivation, determination, and the ability to make sacrifices. Active in leading teams for Financial Peace University—demonstrating leadership, financial acumen, and commitment to community service. -Strong business development skills—combining data mining and analysis with exceptional interpersonal skills and proven networking ability -Extensive international travel experience (currently 16 countries), with the proven ability to navigate travel efficiently and cost-effectively Point #3 – Your Resume MUST Be Applicant Tracking System (ATS) Compatible Back in the day, you sent your resume in via email to a company for a position. An overworked and underpaid human resources person received them and either sent all resumes to the hiring manager or did a cursory evaluation of candidates and only sent over those that met the basic qualifications. Not happening like that anymore. Virtually every company except for mom-and-pop shops or those with old-timers who can't be bothered to learn technology have ATS systems now. The reason? There are a few: -It minimizes the human capital needed to process applicants, which saves the company money -It reduces the potential for human error, which in the case of hiring can lead to lawsuits -It provides an unbiased and unprejudiced way to evaluate candidates based on the job criteria, so theoretically the employer is making better hires -It automatically keeps track of EEO and other state and federal reporting requirements for hiring equity There are, however, significant downsides to the ATS. If you've applied for a job lately, you have a good idea what those downsides are. Among them: -The difficulty of putting your resume in “correctly” so the ATS can read and score it -The inability to interact with a human in the process - it's hard to ask questions or feel any personal connection -The unlikeliness that you will hear from the company you apply to unless they want to interview you-you don't even know if it was received in many cases -The feeling that you have to play to the ATS rather than just present yourself as a qualified candidate ATS, just like all technology, is rapidly evolving. Here are some pointers based on the 2019 status of most ATS systems: -Any formatting that isn't on your computer keyboard will not translate to the ATS. This includes bullets, text boxes, charts and graphs, italics, lines, and symbols. -Keywords are the name of the game. Review each job posting for the keywords (typically nouns) contained in the description. If you possess that skill or qualification, make sure it shows up in your resume. -DO NOT cut and paste the job description into your resume. This may get you through the ATS, but the human will definitely toss you out. -Use common headings for the sections of your resume. The ATS cannot interpret that your bachelor's degree can be found in a section with a heading such as “Academic Preparation.” Stick with “Education,” “Professional Experience,” etc. -Virtually all ATS will allow you to upload a fully formatted version of your resume for the humans to see. Do this as a PDF to retain the integrity of the document. -Length is not an issue with ATS resumes, so you can go into more detail if necessary. Your formatted version, however, should be no longer than two pages.     To visit my website: www.exclusivecareercoaching.com Follow My YouTube channel (Lesa Edwards); it's chocked full of value career management content is easily digestible bites.  Want to speak with an expert about your career/job search goals? You know what? Your resume just might be trash. Your resume might be trash if: Typos - use the settings of your text editor with spell check or use Grammarly There are 25 bullets on the first page - or any subsequent page - please stop killing me with all those bullets You use the phrase “References Available Upon Request” - don't you think I know that Use of Txt or Chat Abbreviations in your phrases. As a job seeker, you need both a resume and a LinkedIn profile. These two documents shouldn’t be mirror images of each other. Each has their own particular purpose and, together, they function as a complimentary review of your work history.Your LinkedIn profile is a broad overview of what your professional value proposition is. Your resume should be customized around particular job opportunity. It’s important to use keywords from the job posting in your resume so when the hiring manager knows you are familiar with the language and the culture of the opportunity. Our guest expert this week is recruiter and career coach,
Ed Han. Ed says you need to be consistent when talking about yourself online and in your resume, but that you need to customize each piece. Here are two areas where your resume and LinkedIn profiles should differ: Keywords: On LinkedIn, you should use industry-specific keywords. (What search terms would an average recruiter or hiring manager be searching for when they’re looking for someone with your skills. In your resume, mimic the keywords and language found in the job description. (The terms that are most likely to get you past the company’s applicant tracking system.) Accomplishments: In LinkedIn, you should list your biggest accomplishments in the summary section or headline, as these are the most commonly read parts of your profile. On your resume, each accomplishment should be associated with the relevant job. Ed also recommends having a master resume with a complete inventory of your work, educational experience, and accomplishments. It makes customizing a resume for a specific opportunity easier, and you can see all of your amazing accomplishments at a glance. This Week’s Guest: Ed Han Ed Han is a recruiter with a passion for networking and helping people put their professional best foot forward, especially on LinkedIn. His own career includes stints with a major Wall Street firm, an international fashion brand, and a publishing company. You can find Ed Han on LinkedIn or at his Land Faster job search and support Facebook group. This Week’s Job Search Resource Ben’s shares a blog post from LinkedIn: 101 Great Words to Use in Your Resume (and 5 to Avoid) by Mike Figliuolo. This Week’s Listener Question Jessica, Ben, and Mac answer Darroch Cahen’s question: “How do I pursue a dualcareer, both professionally and on LinkedIn?” If you would like the team to answer a job-related question or if you’ve found a job resource you think everyone should know about email it to ben@macslist.org or call at 716-JOB-TALK. This issue is the same whether you’re not getting ahead in your organization or not hearing back from employers when you send out your resume! You need some oomph behind the story of your career. It’s there! You’re just not telling it! Yawner… When it comes to career advancement and promotions, you already know to work hard, work smart, show up to work on time, smile and display that great attitude. Yawn. I won’t bore you with that… You deserve the advanced course… I’ll teach you something that will: Give you perspective on what you've accomplished, show you how far you’ve advanced, and highlight how you’ve helped your teams, your companies, and the rest of the world. Aye. You did all that. Yes. You. Provide a solid basis and data for you to conduct effective discussions with your current employer during your performance reviews, annual reviews, and promotion opportunities. Show you what to populate on your resume (because Heaven knows how most of us struggle with this). Who doesn’t love a journal? Call it whatever you want—an employee journal, an employee diary, and so on. I’ve called it a Career Achievements Journal and you can grab the FREE DOWNLOAD here: Career Achievements Journal: 14 Points that Make You Marketable, Get You Promoted, and Accelerate Your Career For every project or major initiative you undertake, capture the following fourteen points. Do this for every major undertaking however and whenever it arises. You might have a project last a day, a month, or a year. The length is unimportant as is whether you do your projects serially or simultaneously. Each project has it’s own list. Project Name: List all major projects and initiatives. They can be a daylong, monthlong, or yearlong initiative. Statistics: Identify anything quantifiable. This includes budget, timeframe, number of resources, number of customers, etc. Capture anything that shows magnitude and impact. Business Problem: Identify the high-level business problem you and your company are trying to overcome, improve, and so on. The Players: List everyone involved from stakeholders, contributors, key team members, units within your organization, partners, and vendors to customers or companies who are benefiting from your project. Solution: Identify how, at a high-level, you and your company solved the problem. Result/Outcome: Capture what happened as a result of the project implementation. Benefits: Capture the entities that benefited (employees, customers, partners, other units in the organization) as well as specifically how they benefited. Challenges: List the high-level challenges that surfaced during the project. There are the issues that arose as you were building your solution (as opposed to the high-level business problem you were addressing overall). Overcame Challenges: Identify how you overcame the challenges throughout the project. Hindsight: Identify what you would have done differently if you started the project knowing what you know now. Lessons Learned: Capture the high-level lessons you and your organization learned as a result of implementing the project. Your Development: Identify how you grew specifically. What can you do now that you couldn’t at the beginning of the project? What new skills do you have? Company Development: Identify how your company grew and improved. What can your company do now that it couldn’t at the beginning of the project? Victories: Reflect on the high-level victories you achieved over the course the project. Even if the project wasn’t implemented fully, still consider all the accomplishments along the way!! You might be successful but… You will never feel successful or happy if you don’t take the time to reflect on all you’ve accomplished. It’s also extremely important for your personal and professional growth to take time to evaluate the lessons, benefits, and so on of your experiences. If you don’t, you’ll be prone to stagnation not to mention susceptible to repeating your mistakes! Also, check out 8 Great Tips to Prove Your Value on Your Resume.
