The U.S. House of Representatives debates H.R.1101, the Lumbee Fairness Act, on December 17, 2024. The bill extends federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe, headquartered in North Carolina. The Lumbees, who are recognized by the state government, claim descent from the historic Cheraw people. Following consideration of H.R.1101 under a suspension of the rules, a recorded vote was requested. The bill passed by a vote of 311 to 96, meeting the two-thirds majority required under House procedures. https://clerk.house.gov/evs/2024/roll511.xml The bill would still need to pass the U.S. Senate before it could be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.
Growing up in Cheraw, South Carolina, Fisher DeBerry spent his time playing multiple sports: football, basketball, baseball and track. In high school, he was All-State in football and baseball. He'll try to tell you that's because there wasn't much competition. Highly unlikely. Fisher got a small scholarship to play football and baseball at Wofford College. He also worked a few jobs to pay for school as well as enlisted in Amry ROTC. After graduation, he served his commitment, earned his master's degree and started coaching football and baseball at the high school level. His coaching path led him back to Wofford, where he was introduced to the Wishbone offense by head coach James Brakefield. Coach Brakefield brought Fisher with him to Appalachian State where for nine years, the Mountaineers dominated on offense. In 1980, Ken Hatfield asked Fisher to join his staff at the Air Force Academy and Fisher took a huge leap leaving the south. He started as the Quarterback's Coach, moved to Offensive Coordinator and got the Head Coaching job when Coach Hatfield left for Arkansas. Over the next 21 seasons, Coach DeBarry's Falcons would win the coveted Commander in Chief trophy 14 times, secure a few conference championships as well as bowl game victories. After retiring in 2006, Fisher and his wife LuAnn amped up their Fisher DeBerry Foundation, helping single parent families, as well as spending time with their two children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.

Joanna John was born and raised in Durham, NC, which is the native and stolen land of the Lumbee, Skarukreh/Tuscarora, Cheraw, Occaneechi, and Shakori Nations. Her first spiritual home was at Watts Street Baptist Church where years before, her grandfather was the minister and had a statue of the Buddha sitting on his desk- she grew up with a belief in life's goodness and a knowing that she was held in grace. A transformative event at age nineteen left Joanna wrestling with life's big questions and feeling the sense of groundlessness that we all feel at one point or another. Most therapists did not know how to relate to her experience in a way that felt true or empowering to her. She did, however, find mindfulness during this time and it became a refuge. Joanna later received degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and taught in the NC public school system before having her first child. When she became a mother, Joanna experienced a resurgence of a familiar anxiety along with a strong pull to understand my inner world and connect with what she calls “God” in a much deeper way. She was fortunate enough to find a therapist who related to her experience with trust, respect, and reverence and it was then that she began to find her way. Joanna developed the skills to change her relationship to thoughts, to learn more about how nervous systems work, and to practice surrendering to a deeper knowing. Compelled to learn more and help others, Joanna completed The Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program in 2023, a two year professional training program for teaching awareness and compassion based practices with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. This program was in partnership with Sounds True and The University of California, Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. In 2024, she will have completed an additional year of meditation teacher training for guiding individuals in embodied inquiry. Joanna is also committed to being trauma informed, anti-racist, and an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. Joanna's primary role is homeschool parent and carving out space for mindfulness and contemplative practices as they are her life's passion. You can find Joanna in nature with her family, gardening, listening to music, enjoying vegan food, and devouring audiobooks and podcasts. Elder John Burch was featured in a PBS docuseries titled American Epic, detailing the early days of American musical recordings. We talk about his church in Cheraw, and how his choir would influence not just gospel music, but one of the greatest jazz musicians of the twentieth century. We also talk about how a priority for education has been passed down through the family, as well as uncover a few little known family facts. You can listen to Elder John's music on Spotify and Apple Music.

“S” is for St. David's Church in Cheraw. St. David's Parish was established in 1768 and construction on the parish church—known locally as “Old St. David's”--began in the 1770s. Although similar to other colonial Anglican churches, the frame building was less ornate. During the Revolution, the British used the church as a hospital. After the war, there was no resident clergyman and the building fell into disuse. In 1819, an Episcopal clergyman helped revive the congregation and the structure was enlarged and a steeple added. A century later, the congregation completed a new sanctuary in downtown Cheraw and the old church building was used only sporadically. In the 1970s the congregation gave “Old St. David's” Church to the Chesterfield County Historic Preservation Commission, which restored the building to its early nineteenth-century appearance.
CONGRESSIONAL CONVERSATIONS: Democratic Candidate Melissa Watson (SC-7) This week the Carolina Roll Call got the opportunity to sit down with Democratic Nominee for the 7th Congressional District, Melissa Watson. This race is important to Coleman and I, as we have both grown up in this area (Shoutout to Cheraw and Dillon!). Melissa is a native of the District. She was raised in Dillon, SC. She is a teacher and she works another job as a waitress to make ends meet. We had a great time talking with Melissa discussing issues ranging from I-73, rural healthcare, and college affordability. Since there will not be a debate for this race, these podcast episodes will be an important way for you to inform yourself before you vote! Support this podcast
Welcome to Cheraw, SC, the "Prettiest Town in Dixie!" Located along the Pee Dee River, the area was originally inhabited by the Pee Dee and Cheraw tribes. Wars and disease decimated the population, and by the time of the American Revolution, only a few Native Americans remained in the area. The area was settled by Europeans beginning in the 1740s, and played a role in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War. Cheraw faced economic hardship after the Civil War, but return to prosperity in the early 1900s. Jazz great Dizzy Gillespie was born in Cheraw, as was Cyndi Lauper's husband, David Thornton (which seemed to excite Keith greatly). We hope you'll join us for a quick turn through this quiet little town.
"U" is for the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. The denomination was formed in 1958 with the union of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and the United Presbyterian Church in North America. Long-established lowcountry black congregations were part of the United Presbyterian Church. In 1861 when the South seceded from the union, the denomination had divided into northern and southern branches. After the war, black Presbyterians withdrew from white churches. With the assistance of northern missionaries and money, they organized an extensive school system built around local congregations. By 1917 there were 47 Presbyterian schools in the state on Edisto Island and in Irmo, Aiken, Cheraw, and Chester. In 1983, the southern branch of the Presbyterian Church joined with the United Presbyterian Church to form the Presbyterian Church [USA].
In the small town of Cheraw, South Carolina Ashley Davis is teaching the young women about life through the game of basketball. Despite the small intimate size of the town, Davis is choosing to show her student athletes how taking the steps into right direction can help them impact the world once they leave their hometown. Ashley played at Cheraw High School in her teen years and understands what the new generation needs to excel at the next level. We had a thought provoking conversation about women's athletics, education, Kobe's Mamba mentality, and more. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robert-bruin/support

Carl is joined by his friend Jane Pigg, owner of the Cheraw newspaper called The Link as well as 93.9 MYFM and WCRE 1420 AM, on this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast. Jane got her start in media at a young age, watching her mother read the newspaper every afternoon until she was old enough to read it as well in addition to creating radio and television broadcasts for 4H in elementary school. She went to the University of South Carolina, where she received her degree in Journalism with a focus in Advertising and Public Relations, which helped propel her more into the broadcasting industry. She also figured out around this time that she could talk faster than she could write, so even though she has always loved the written word, radio was more her speed. Jane recognizes the power of media in spreading messages, including public service campaigns like the Chesterfield county clean up day this past May. Partnering with local government officials and businesses, WCRE organized litter clean up efforts and communicated the importance of keeping the county clean. There is still much work to do, but Jane has faith that people will begin to adapt their ways and reduce the amount of waste being strewn along our roads. While it seems that many major newspapers are struggling to make it in this digital world, Jane believes that local newspapers will always be around because people desire factual information about the community without much commentary. With syndicated news shows and social media’s reach also comes the negative consequences of having no legal precedents for slander or libel, rules that legitimate news sources must abide by. In her endeavors as a media owner in northern South Carolina, as a community member, and as the previous president of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association, Jane lives by the Rotarian motto of “service above self”, and she believes that the world would be a better place if more people lived that way. North Florida’s Mixed-blood Indian People, Rediscovery of a Forgotten People In the early 1800s, dozens of Siouan-speaking Cheraw families, including Catawbas and Lumbees, fled war and oppression in the Carolinas and migrated to Florida; just as native Appalachicola Creeks were migrating away. Being neither Black nor White, the Cheraw descendants were persecuted by the harsh “racial” dichotomy of the Jim Crow era and almost forgot their proud heritage. Today they have rediscovered their past. This is their story. Creek Eastern Siouan Cheraw Indians, generally located in the panhandle of Florida.
