Chris Cage founded Greenbelly, a maker of high-nutrition meal bars for backpackers, after having left his accounting job and traveling the world. That was in 2014. Fast forward to 2021, and the business is thriving.
Triple Crowner, "Rusty", talks about the three iconic long distance trails in the United States - the Appalachian Trail or AT, the Pacific Crest Trail or PCT and the Continental Divide Trail or CDT. These trails are collectively known as the Triple Crown of Hiking. Eric hiked the AT in 2015, the PCT in 2016, and the CDT in 2017. Combined this is just shy of 8,000 miles. We are going to hear a little bit about Rusty's experience as well as nerd out on comparing the three trails in several categories: scenery, wildlife, trail conditions, weather, gear differences, hiking culture, resupplying and more. If you're considering a thru-hike, but not quite sure which trail to hike, hopefully this episode will help you decide. Hosted by Chris Cage with Greenbelly Meals.
I talk with Karl Meltzer about how he got started with ultrarunning as well as define what constitues and 'ultra' run versus a normal run. We dive deep into his crazy Appalachian Trail fastest known time record. How he planned the 45 day record breaking run, his other failed attempts, injuries, diet, pace, van logistics, crew setup, and more. Karl talks about how he started to make a living running all while bartending at night. Some of his brand partnerships evolved into one of the most popular Red Bull documentaries of all time as well as designing one of the most popular trail running shoes on the market, the Speedgoat by Hoka One One. Hosted by Chris Cage with Greenbelly Meals.
I talk with Travis Avery of Sawyer Products. Sawyer makes a line of extremely popular items ranging from insect repellents to water filters. We dive deep into how their product, the Sawyer Squeeze, revolutionized the way we consume water in the backcountry. We also talk about how the company started in 1984 with a surprisingly uique product, insect repellents, walter filtration, and more. Hosted by Chris Cage with Greenbelly Meals.
Chris Cage quit a corporate job to travel and eventually hike the Appalachian Trail. When he was finally done, he had a choice to make. Either go back to corporate life or find a way to fund his new lifestyle. He chose the latter and founded Greenbelly Meals. Chris has had to make some big life-changing decisions that all came at a cost, but that's makes it an adventure. To risk the known for the unknown. On this episode, we get to know a little more about Chris Cage, Green Belly, and how he goes about managing risks. We also dive into entrepreneurship, his book on the AT, and a fun new social networking site for backpacking gear nerds called Packfire. By Land,Emory R. You might have seen some of her beautifully shot and edited videos on Youtube. If you haven't already, you should check out her short film - It Is the People on Youtube. We discuss New Zealand (which is where Elina is from), thruhiking the Pacific Crest Trail, her filming experience, the Te Araroa Trail, and a lot more fun stuff. I talk with Chris Cage about founding an eCommerce foods business. This is a business of eCommerce episode 120. Welcome to the business of eCommerce. The show that helps eCommerce retailers start, launch and grow their eCommerce business. I am Charles Palleschi and I'm here today with Chris Cage. Chris is the founder of green belly meals, a company that he founded in his mom's kitchen after hiking the Appalachian trail, green belly makes a ready to eat mills bar loaded with dense nutrients for hikers and adventurers. I as Chris on the show today to chat about his experience launching an eCommerce foods brand. So, Hey Chris, how are you doing today? Chris (00:44): Charles, what's up man? Thanks for having me. Charles (00:46): Yeah, awesome to have you on the show. It we're just chatting before the show. Currently your abroad, right? So you're originally from the U S but currently you are? Chris (00:55): Yeah, I'm in Chiang Mai, Thailand right now. If you can tell the it's dark. Yeah. But yeah, we are worlds away right now. Yeah, I'm in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Charles (01:07): Yeah. So, and that's, I know we had to do some time-sucking here. It's early for me, late for you. But so thank you for taking the time. Chris (01:14): Yeah, man. Thanks for having me do. Yeah. But yeah, we are a little bit off on time, so that's for sure. Charles (01:17): Yeah, exactly the opposite of most. I think actually it might be the opposite. It's super interesting. You're kind of the background. So ready to eat backpacking mail. Right? So this is a bar. So you guys sell it's a bar specifically if you're a backpacker like a protein bar sort of thing or what exactly is it? Chris (01:37): Yeah, it's two large fluffy meal bars inside a single package that provides 650 calories. So we use all natural ingredients and really just try to focus on a high macro nutrient label. So high calorie protein, fat, fiber, all that good stuff. So for hikers, which is, my background is I was a hiker and hiking the Appalachian trail and hiking 20 miles a day for six months. That, you know, I said, Hey, you know, I was losing a lot of weight and weight, is it weight on your pack as a huge priority because you generally have maybe a hundred miles or five days in between resupply points that you need to make sure that the food you are carrying in between those resupply points is as nutritionally dense as possible. So that was kind of where the idea came from is get creating a product that's going to be nutritionally dense. So if you're burning 5,000 calories a day and you could have to and you have to carry all the food, you know, in your pack for the next five days, it really needs to be dense. So I started thinking about creating a really dense lightweight ready to eat meal that, you know, was all natural. Charles (02:52): So, okay. Yeah. I don't talk to too many people that are in that kind of actual food space. I feel like that in itself, it's like its
Hello from Asia! We’ve been here since the middle of December, spending the holidays over in Thailand. Now we’re in Ho Chi Minh City, exploring the capital and financial center of Vietnam. I’ve been to quite a few places in Asia but I have to say that Chiang Mai, where we’ve been staying in while in Thailand, really stands out. This mountain city is a digital nomad’s paradise. In the weeks we were there, we’ve hung out with several ecommerce entrepreneurs who or are more less permanently settled in the area. In this episode, I chat with one of the ‘locals’. Chris Cage channeled his passion for hiking to come up with Greenbelly Meals, a company that sells ready-to-eat backpacking meals. He takes me through how he started his business and how he plans to grow it in the years to come. And of course, he shares the perks of living and working in a tropical paradise. Check out the timestamps below so you can dive into the parts you’re most interested in. Dan and Ian speak with a lot of entrepreneurs on this show about the difficult decisions that they have to make. Today's guest is currently facing one of the biggest challenges in his business. You may remember Chris Cage from his previous appearances on this podcast. Chris is the founder of Greenbelly Meals, which manufactures high calorie, stoveless backpacking meals for athletes and hikers. Chris reached out to us about the recent troubles he's had hiring people. We thought it might be a good idea to record that conversation and share it with our listeners. This week's episode is all about hiring. You'll hear all about what goes into the decision to hire, the hiring process itself, and how to successfully interview and eventually hire the best people for your jobs.
Josh sits down with Greenbelly Meals founder Chris Cage. Greenbelly Meals makes delicious super nutrient dense stoveless backpacking meals. Cage dove headfirst into the backcountry meal game after stepping away from his stable accountant job to travel the world, starting with Asia and, shortly after, biking across New Zealand from coast to coast. His ultimate goal? To hike the entirety of the Appalachian Trail, which he did (like a boss). With all his travel and after tons of calories spent, it would be on that very excursion that he came up with the idea of a simple, easy, calorie-efficient meal. The time between his resupply points for food was 3-6 days apart so he was looking for low weight calorie dense meal and it didn't take long for him to commit to fill his own needs. As soon as he got back to civilization he got to work and it wasn't long until Greenbelly was filling the stomachs of happy hikers.

The Tropical MBA Podcast - Entrepreneurship, Travel, and Lifestyle
http://www.tropicalmba.com/greenbelly2/ In the past, Dan and Ian have spoken on this podcast about specific "epiphanies" that entrepreneurs have had on their journey. You're not going to hear about a lightbulb business idea or an overnight success story on today's show, though. The reality is that even if these epiphanies happen, the day-to-day life of being an entrepreneur has nothing to do with a single moment of insight. In fact, quite often the opposite is true. Entrepreneurs frequently feel like they have no idea what they are doing or what they are supposed to do. Chris Cage first joined us on the TropicalMBA in 2015 to talk to about his company, Greenbelly Meals. Greenbelly manufactures and sells mega-calorie, high-nutrient meal bars for people that participate in activities that require a huge calorie load. When Chris last spoke on this podcast, there were many question marks about his path forward. On this week's episode, Chris talks about what has happened in his journey since we last spoke, what inspired his first book, how it felt to appear on The Joe Rogan Experience, and much, much more.
Chris is the founder of Greenbelly Meals. Greenbelly makes ready to eat backpacking meals for long distance backpackers and adventure travelers.
