Mick Foley turns the McMahon family against itself with a Survivor-style vote to decide who faces The Rock. Tommy Blacha and Rob Pasbani break down the August 17, 2000 episode of WWF SmackDown, live from the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts, with SummerSlam just two weeks away.Shane, Triple H, Stephanie, and Kurt Angle open the show by declaring themselves a united family, but Foley quickly detonates it by replaying the footage of Kurt kissing Stephanie's cheek from Raw. Rather than pick The Rock's opponent himself, Foley forces the McMahon camp to vote among themselves — with Shane volunteering first before the group ultimately settles on Triple H. Angle storms off in a fury, telling Stephanie he feels voted off the island.Triple H gets the win in the main event only after Kurt Angle runs down with a chair and helps him double-team The Rock, giving The Rock his second pinfall loss in two shows heading into SummerSlam. Elsewhere, Trish Stratus grabs a water pitcher from the announcer's table and smashes it over Chyna's head during the Eddie Guerrero vs. Val Venis Intercontinental Championship match, setting up Trish and Val vs. Chyna and Eddie at SummerSlam.Other major discussion points include:- Rikishi gives Terri the Stink Face after The Cat recruits him as her partner in a mixed tag match against Perry Saturn and Terri, featuring a monkey flip in high heeled boots- Edge and Christian redefine TLC as Totally Lacking Coolness and teach Worcester the word hanosity, before losing to Jeff Hardy and D-Von Dudley in a match that sows dissension between the Hardys and the Dudleys- Chris Benoit defeats Steve Blackman in a Hardcore Championship match with Chris Jericho on commentary, leading to a candid discussion about how this footage ages given what Benoit would later do- Tommy Blacha explains why Kane was plugged into the Undertaker feud after Big Show was sent to OVW because management grew unhappy with him- Kane destroys X-Pac and Road Dogg, takes the mic, and announces he is a monster before brawling with Undertaker- Big Bossman refers to Kaientai as his Chinese buddies and then oriental buddies as they try to correct him, with Crash Holly and the APA picking up the win- A recap of Sunday Night Heat, including Dean Malenko retaining the Light Heavyweight Championship, a Jericho promo officially announcing his two-out-of-three falls match with Benoit at SummerSlam, Kurt Angle defeating Matt Hardy, and Stephanie McMahon attacking Lita to set up their Raw Women's Championship match---Just announced! This week on Tales from the Attitude Era, former WWF writer Tommy Blacha and co-host Rob Pasbani recap the June 5, 2000, episode of RAW is WAR from the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York. The night begins with massive dissension in the McMahon-Helmsley faction as Triple H, Vince McMahon, and Shane McMahon engage in a family shoving match that results in everyone—including Stephanie McMahon—getting slapped.A major talking point this week is how that "laborious" opening segment threw off the timing for the entire broadcast. While the network versions feature a generic theme, original recordings prove he was using Kid Rock's "American Badass" from day one. Tommy Blacha shares a hilarious story about Kevin Dunn blasting the track on a private jet until everyone was sick of it.Other highlights from this episode include:The Rock, The Undertaker, and Kane battling in a high-stakes Triple Threat match for a title shot.Rikishi delivering a devastating Stink Face to Trish Stratus.- Too Cool defending their WWF Tag Team Championship against The Hardy Boyz.- Crash Holly continuing his relentless quest to reclaim the Hardcore Championship.- The Rock and Triple H closing the show with a pay-per-view quality television main event for the WWF Championship.0:00 - Intro1:35 - WWF legal battles & the move to Spike TV3:55 - Rochester, NY: The "glitch" in the graphic5:55 - The Undertaker's real entrance music revealed8:20 - Vince McMahon, Brisco, & Patterson arrive10:50 - Opening Segment: Triple H vs. Vince vs. Shane dissension11:25 - Deep Dive: How the long opening segment ruined the show's timing16:55 - The Rock interrupts / The family slap-fest18:55 - Kane & The Undertaker demand title shots21:00 - Why WWF gave away main events on free TV25:40 - Match 1: Too Cool & Rikishi vs. Val Venis, Test & Albert30:40 - Trish Stratus takes a Stink Face!32:45 - Crash Holly's backstage parking lot fail33:25 - Match 2: Chris Benoit vs. Road Dogg (The impact of time cuts)35:45 - Kane interview: "I don't have a brother"36:45 - Gerald Brisco vs. Crash Holly (Hardcore Championship)39:15 - Triple Threat Match: The Rock vs. Kane vs. The Undertaker41:25 - Triple H interferes / The Rock earns the title shot42:02 - Match 3: Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko (Truncated stories)45:43 - KOTR Qualifier: Hardcore Holly vs. Faarooq47:15 - 6-Man Tag: Dudley Boyz & Chris Jericho vs. Angle, Edge & Christian50:10 - The Hardy Boyz vs. Boss Man & Bull Buchanan52:15 - Stephanie McMahon announces a Women's Battle Royal56:40 - Main Event: Triple H vs. The Rock (WWF Championship)1:02:25 - Final Thoughts: Burnout & the cycle of wrestling writing1:12:45 - Inside Baseball: The reality of Kayfabe today1:15:20 - OutroFollow Tales from The Attitude Era on all social mediahttp://youtube.com/@TFTAttitudeEra http://twitter.com/TFTAttitudeErahttp://instagram.com/TFTAttitudeErahttp://tiktok.com/@TFTAttitudeEra Hosted on Acast. It's the final WWF Monday Night Raw before the biggest show of the year, and things get out of whack when the first segment runs much longer than it should have, forcing cuts to the timing of the rest of the show. Watch as former head writer Tommy Blacha describes the mayhem backstage and also some angles he hoped to get across before the big PPV this weekend - namely never getting a Hardcore vs. Crash Holly feud fully off the ground. All the matches on the show this week seem to set up PPV matches for the weekend, and we go through the build for Mania and discuss the chaotic main event starring all the featured players. Vince is back, and he wants revenge on his children for causing chaos while he was gone. Lots of McMahon interactions this episode, plus the Rock continues to get the best of DX and Big Show. One of the best 24/7 hardcore segments ever aired on this episode at Fun Time USA with Crash Holly and the Headbangers. Ohhhh hell yeah! Strap in and grab a cold one, ‘cause this week's episode of your podcast is diving headfirst into one of the wildest damn nights from the Attitude Era — WWE Raw is War, October 30th, 2000 — and baby, it's an all-out chaos buffet with extra steel cage mayhem. We're talkin' Stone Cold Steve Austin unleashing straight-up Texas Rattlesnake vengeance on Rikishi inside a freakin' steel cage! No rules, no mercy, and definitely no regrets. Rikishi tried to run him down a year ago — now Austin's dishing out the kind of ass-whooping you can feel through your Walkman. Blood, sweat, and middle fingers. Classic Attitude. But wait — things get even weirder (and a little sexy, let's be real) when Commissioner Mick Foley, rockin' that Santa Claus-meets-Jerry Garcia energy, pulls a surprise power move and introduces his brand-new Lt. Commissioner… Debra. Yeah, that Debra. Cookies and cleavage with a badge. The boys in the back better tighten up, ‘cause the new sheriff in town isn't afraid to throw some attitude of her own. Then it's The Rock vs. Chris Jericho in a #1 Contender's match that SLAPS harder than a Stunner. Two icons, one winner — and it's the People's Champ who comes out on top. But just when you think he's headed for glory, here comes Rikishi with a chair, a grudge, and a whole damn confession that shakes the arena.“He told me to do it…”Who told you, Rikishi? WHO?! Oh, you know who. The Rock's once-tight alliance with Rikishi officially goes up in flames like a flaming table at a Dudley Boyz barbecue. This Raw was messy, violent, hilarious, and absolutely unforgettable. Just how we like it. So hit play and let's relive this Monday night madness — because the Attitude Era never died… it just got louder on your podcast.
It's Handicap Match Mania on Smackdown this episode, and we dive into why there were four handicap matches booked on this show. With just under a month to WrestleMania 2000, it was an episode to build heat on the heels. Also on this episode, Bob Backlund and Taz trade submissions, Steve Blackman and Jeff Hardy wow the crowd, Crash Holly escapes out of a laundromat with his title, and Edge spears Lita!Watch this episode on Youtube.Follow Tales from The Attitude Era on all social mediahttp://youtube.com/@TFTAttitudeEra http://twitter.com/TFTAttitudeErahttp://instagram.com/TFTAttitudeErahttp://tiktok.com/@TFTAttitudeEraTommy Blacha made his name in Hollywood as a writer on Conan O'Brien, co-creator of Metalocalypse on Adult Swim, and a writer on shows like The Eric Andre Show and Da Ali G Show. After a referee gets bumped during the match, Earl Hebner comes in at the end of the match and counts the pin for Chris Jericho. Chris Jericho is the NEW WWF Champion, for all of 2 minutes. Triple H argues with the refs and says that Earl made a fast count and needs to reverse the decision. Earl agrees as long as Triple H doesn't mess with him while he works for the WWF. Triple H goes along with it until he gets his title back. He then fires Hebner and beats him up. Also, Linda McMahon is here with a big surprise that she won't tell anyone about. She goes into the ring and says that Stone Cold Steve Austin will be in the corner of The Rock at the Backlash against Triple H. This makes Triple H and Stephanie upset and Stephanie goes to slap her mom. However, Linda was ready and countered it by slapping her back. Plus, The Hardyz vs Eddie and Essa Rios, Crash Holly vs Perry Saturn vs Tazz and much more. In the main event, Chris Jericho teams with the APA to take on DX! ⦁ Deadlock Discord: https://discord.gg/E4BvR4W⦁ Deadlock Shop: https://shop.deadlockpw.com⦁ Deadlock Patreon: https://patreon.com/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Twitter: https://twitter.com/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Instagram: https://instagram.com/deadlockwrestling⦁ Deadlock Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/deadlockpw⦁ Deadlock Pro Wrestling: http://deadlockpro.com
With five weeks until WrestleMania, this episode doesn't have a lot of newsworthy segments, except one notable exception - the birth of Crash Holly's 24/7 Hardcore Title gimmick, one of Tommy's favorite creations. Plus, the Rock keeps trying to get into the main event, Rikishi's push continues, we see another glimpse of Lita and Sgt. Slaughter comes out of retirement to put Kurt Angle in his place.Watch this episode on Youtube.Follow Tales from The Attitude Era on all social mediahttp://youtube.com/@TFTAttitudeEra http://twitter.com/TFTAttitudeErahttp://instagram.com/TFTAttitudeErahttp://tiktok.com/@TFTAttitudeEraTommy Blacha made his name in Hollywood as a writer on Conan O'Brien, co-creator of Metalocalypse on Adult Swim, and a writer on shows like The Eric Andre Show and Da Ali G Show. But, a little-known fact about Tommy's career is that he was the head writer of WWE (WWF at the time)) during their most successful period, starting in 1999, taking over for Vince Russo, who left for the competition. This podcast, Tales from the Attitude Era will be a retrospective of Tommy's time in the head writer position and the roller coaster ride that is pro wrestling, co-hosted by Rob Pasbani. 2000 was a crazy time in the wrestling world. Mike Awesome defected to WCW, however he was still the ECW World Champion. Facing legal action from Paul Heyman, Mike Awesome had to appear at an ECW event and defend the ECW Championship against Tazz, who was working for WWF at the time! This was the one and only time a WWF Superstar wrestled a WCW wrestler at an ECW show. Tazz, now ECW Champion, showed up on SmackDown! and challenged the WWF Champion Triple H to a match! Speaking of Triple H, we are shortly removed from the night that Chris Jericho beat Triple H for the WWF Championship. Triple H bullied Earl Hebner to reverse the decision and Triple H regained his WWF Title. The Rock will challenge Triple H coming up at WWF Backlash and Linda McMahon appointed Stone Cold Steve Austin to be in The Rock's corner to help even the odds. Chris Jericho battles The Rock in a Lumberjack Match, where all the Lumberjacks were chosen by The McMahon-Helmsley Regime. Also, Big Show is “The Big Funkay”, Crash Holly is on his WWF Hardcore Championship 24/7 Rule reign, & Eddie Guerrero gets his GED! On today's show, we look back fondly on April 2000, a blissful time when nothing really mattered at all. Perry Saturn's trademark weird skin color, the big hooks from the Backlash set, Pat Patterson's shit-stained undies, and more! Recorded partially outside, I apologize for any audio issues. I'm sure it's not as bad as I think. “Woody Farmer's Bay Area Wresting” is a new documentary available on YouTube, and it tells the true story about a little wrestling school turned promotion based in Newark, California, which is just East of San Francisco, run by Woody Farmer. Woody secured a TV deal for Bay Area Wrestling almost before he had a true promotion up and running, and taped the shows in a tiny studio at the TV station. He soon landed a network deal with The Sports Channel, and had talent like Mae Young, Mike Lockwood (aka Crash Holly), Radical Robbie Lee, and a young Chris Jericho wrestling matches in his tiny studio! Documentary filmmakers Paul Ponte and Jesus Cruz, along with the voice of Bay Area Wrestling, Pat Kelly, and wrestler Shane Kody (who is also Woody Farmer's son), discuss Bay Area Wrestling from its formation to landing their TV deal to Chris Jericho's three-match run, and what came after! They recount some of their favorite performers and matches, remember the unique personalities, and share some of the hilarious moments both in front of and behind the camera.
