Brad and Jake tackle, but Brad hasn't seen any movies from 1943, so he recommends the acclaimed The Life & Times of Colonel Blimp. This unconventional epic spanning the Second Boer War and both World Wars was helmed by the Archers (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger), and starred Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, and Deborah Kerr in knockout performances. Jake, with little in his 1943 arsenal, asked Brad to watch Disney's Saludos Amigos. But since it's more of a tourism ad than it is a movie, Brad took the opportunity to rank all 61 Disney Animated Features released at the time of this recording, from Snow White to Strange World. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Bambi (1942), The Three Caballeros (1944), Make Mine Music (1946), Fun and Fancy Free (1947), Melody Time (1948), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), The Sword in the Stone (1963), The Jungle Book (1967), The Aristocats (1970), Robin Hood (1973), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), The Rescuers (1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Secret of NIMH (1982), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Rock-a-doodle (1991), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), Tarzan (1999), Fantasia 2000 (1999), Dinosaur (2000), The Emperor's New Groove (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Lilo & Stitch (2002), Treasure Planet (2002), Brother Bear (2003),Home on the Range (2004), Chicken Little (2005), Meet the Robinsons (2007), Bolt (2008), The Princess and the Frog (2009), Tangled (2010), Winnie the Pooh (2011), Wreck it Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), Big Hero Six (2014), Zootopia (2016), Moana (2016), Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), Frozen II (2019), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Encanto (2021), Strange World (2022)

This week, Claire chatted to Chris Atkeson from Carnegie Mellon University all about humanoid robots, human-aware environments and the future of AI and robotics. Chris Atkeson is a professor in the Robotics Institute and Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on developing humanoid and super-human robots. His work inspired aspects of the design of the character Baymax (an inflatable robot that takes care of people) in the Disney movie Big Hero 6. His life goal is to fulfil the science fiction vision of machines that achieve human levels of competence in perceiving, thinking, and acting.
Everything New for Disney Parks and Resorts from D23 Expo 2022 So What's Next for Disney Parks? You won't believe what's coming behind Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World This is Disney's Blue Sky sneak peak of what's coming down the road for Disney Parks. This portion of the D23 Expo had the biggest cheer of anything announced in 2022.First though, Josh D'Amaro announced what's happening with Dinoland at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. It has been languishing and looks forgotten so the announcement of a big transformation coming was welcome. Zootopia and Moana will share the space currently occupied by Dinoland. But the biggest news of all... Disney Villains are Finally Getting a Place to Call their OwnMagic Kingdom will feature new frontiers and it's all hiding on the other side of BTM. The little town of Santa Cecilia will come to life as Coco gets a Magic Kingdom presence. And if you do want to talk about Bruno, you're in luck because you may be able to walk right into the Madrigal's casita. But all is not fun and flowers in this new land...as what if the Disney villains took up residence there as well...beyond Big Thunder Mountain. This was presented as conceptual and would likely be 10 years down the road, but Disney would not share it in this way if it weren't going to happen. Big news for Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom. -- There's More Coming to Walt Disney WorldA new nighttime show for EPCOT will debut in late 2023 to kick-off the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. Moana's Journey of Water and the rest of the World Celebration area at EPCOT will open in late 2023. So we'll have to bear with those construction walls for another year it seems.Figment is returning in a brand new form for a meet and greet at EPCOT. That will be in place by the end of 2023. In Magic Kingdom, the perennial favorite Hatbox Ghost will materialize once again in the Haunted Mansion. And we now know that Tron Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom will debut in Spring 2023. We were hoping it would be sooner, but apparently they are working on finishing touches right now. No specific date, just "spring." Finally, in 2023, a new version of Happily Ever After will return as part of a new Magic Kingdom nighttime show. This received a good amount of applause. What's New and Coming to Disneyland Resort The DVC Villas at Disneyland Hotel will be called the Villas at Disneyland Hotel. How creative. On October 16, 2023 Disney 100 kicks-off and it promises to be the biggest celebration ever for Disney. Under the theme of a Boundless Future the following announcements were made: The Mandalorian and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) will be onsite starting in Mid November 2022 at Disneyland Galaxy's Edge Over at the Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure Park, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, noted "we're just getting started." A new giant Hulk will be at Avengers Campus in California "next week." Plus, they're bringing the Multiverse to Avengers Campus. Disney is expanding the campus to include a new attraction. In the new attraction you will battle alongside all the Avengers against all the foes from anywhere. You will fight King Thanos. This is a new Thanos -- a Thanos who won. And the Avengers are not too happy about that and you have to help them. More news to come. Also new to Disney California Adventure, they are reimagining Pacific Wharf into San Fransokyo from Big Hero Six. You'll be able to meet Baymax there. Finally, they are reimagining Paradise Pier Hotel, as it will become Pixar Place Hotel. It will feature a Finding Nemo splash pad and more characters. All in all, Disney promises that the hotel will feel completely new. Over at Downtown Disney more than a dozen new or reimagined locations are in the works. More announcements coming over the next year. But the big news locally is a that SoCal favorite bakery Porto's is coming to Downtown Disney. RunDisney at Disneyland is coming back in 2024. More details coming soon. It's been awhile for Run Disney as the last one took place in 2017. Mickey's ToonTown Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway are coming along. It was good to hear that it will be a slightly different version of Runaway Railway than the WDW edition, to fit into the Disneyland ToonTown story. It's all opening in 2023. Tiana's Bayou Adventure will open in late 2024 in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The story for the ride is that it picks up where the film (Princess and the Frog) left off. In the new story, Princess Tiana is an entrepreneur and community leader in the year 1927. She is hosting a party for the community and we need to help Tiana to find a special ingredient that she's missing. Disney promises that the latest tech is being implemented to really enhance the outside of the whole area at night. Mist will be used like a painter's canvas. "True bayou magic." The attraction is to be a love letter to New Orleans. Guests should feel the story is authentic to the city. Another great piece of news is that the original cast will be lending their voices to the new attraction. --What's new at Disney Cruise Line The sixth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet is all about adventure...celebrating Walt's love for exploration. The new Disney Cruise ship is called Disney Treasure. The Disney Wonder is heading to Australia and New Zealand late 2023. The island of Eleuthera and Lighthouse Point will be the new Bahamas port for Disney Cruise. 90% of the power will come from solar. What's Coming to Disney Parks Around the Globe Zootopia is opening at Shanghai Disneyland. World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland will open in the second half of 2023, featuring a Wandering Oaken sleigh coaster. Disneyland Paris' Frozen Arendelle land is coming along and Disneyland Hotel is being fully reimagined -- opening in 2024 At Tokyo Disneyland, Disney Fantasy Spring will feature Peter Pan, Tangled and Frozen. Plus a totally reimagined Space Mountain will open by 2027 at Tokyo Disney. Pixar We Belong Together will be debuting at Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris next year. The DLP 30th Anniversary celebrations will be continuing until September 2023.--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. Why is it that all the best Disney Animated Canon features are the ones that don't make giant piles of money? We talk about 2014's Big Hero Six, about the alternate history it represents, about how comic book heroes let us examine big ideas in a handleable way, and about the importance of mental health as an affect to your material conditions.
Not going to lie I wish the Big Hero Six was in this. But I thought it addressed things nicely. I am still holding out hope for a Big Hero Six follow up. How was Baymax for you? In this week's edition of the BFG Podcast, editor-in-chief Neal Pollack throws a Molotov cocktail into the face of Stranger Things. It's the most significant new pop-culture universe in years, he says. So why does it always feel like the show is hitting you in the face with a shovel? These are some of the great mysteries of Stranger Things.Another mystery: Why is Disney+ continually pandering to the cultural left? This week, it's Baymax from Big Hero Six showing a transgender person where to buy tampons. Thanks, helper robot! Disney has now alienated half its audience from a show no one was watching anyway. William Schwartz stops by to parse the controversy. It's another podcast week, so Pollack and Stephen Garrett must be discussing a Marvel movie. This week it's ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,' a loud and silly movie from Taika Waititi. It's not bad, but Stephen found the fight scenes underwhelming, and Valkyrie underused. Neal hated Thor's sidekick Korg. Listen for yourselves and draw your own opinions, as long as you agree with us!Enjoy the show.
Chris Williams sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. We chat about the values he looks to instill in to his kids as they were growing up. After that we talk about the new movie he directed on Netflix called The Sea Beast. Chris shares the casting process and what he hopes people will take away from The Sea Beast. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five. About The Sea Beast In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes - and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he's saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history. As hate crimes against Asian people in both the US and the UK continue to grow, Scott is once again joined by Archit Tripathi to talk about the systemic bigotry in our society that has led us to this point. Furthermore, they discuss the many great superhero characters both from all corners of Asia and of Asian descent that deserve recognition and respect, just like the Asian community. These characters teach us to stand up for what's right and to unite against hatred and racism, a lesson that is truly worth learning. "Be kind whenever possible. Happy New Year to all our listeners! We're taking a break from dead pilots this month to do something fun and different! At the beginning of the pandemic Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series), asked the Twitter-verse to send her the names of fake TV shows that she could write the cold opens for. It was an incredible writing exercise and Jenny ended up writing over 60 cold opens!! We've selected 19 of them to read for you. They’re all tonally different and jump from genre to genre. They’re silly and outrageous and we recorded them all with a great group of actors including: Kathleen Rose Perkins (Episodes), Maria Blasucci (Drunk History), Langston Kerman (The Boys, Insecure), Ashleigh Hairston (The Neighborhood), Oscar Montoya (Bless The Harts), and Andrew Reich with stage directions. In Andrew’s interview, Jenny goes in depth about her day to day writing process, and what a creatively freeing exercise this was. It’s a great listen if you’re trying to kick off 2021 inspired to create! “Domination is built by binaries.” My guest today explains why the race conversation in America is often flattened to the black and white binary and erases other race and mixed race folks. Sharon Chang is an author and race activist and we have an interesting and informative conversation about her mixed race family and how parents of all children can make the world more kind and inclusive for mixed race children. One of the most critical things is becoming aware of stereotypes that are levied against mixed race children, and she gives us examples of how it presents in car commercials, DNA testing commercials, and in popular animation film Big Hero Six. We talk about the importance of listening and not projecting mono race expectations on mixed race children, and centering the stories and histories of mixed race people. For example, did you know more than 700 people were interned during the Japanese American Internment Camps during WWII? Sharon is whip smart, friendly and relatable, and it is important that we hear her story. Steven T. Seagle is a legendary creator who needs no introduction...but I'm gonna give him one anyway. In addition to his epic runs on books like Alpha Flight, House of Secrets, Sandman Mystery Theater, Superman, and Uncanny X-Men, Steve is also the co-creator of both Big Hero Six, and—along with his partners at Man Of Action--Ben 10. Seagle joins Eric in the studio this episode to discuss his groundbreaking work, IT'S A BIRD..., a semi-autobiographical graphic novel that chronicles his real-life reluctance to take a gig writing The Man Of Steel. Welcome to Episode 13 of Flipped with CG animation director, animator and teacher, Jason Ryan. Jason is a multi-talented Irish animator whose career has spanned the last 20 years on such films as Fantasia 2000, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Kung Fu Panda 2, The Croods and most recently Big Hero Six (to name a few). Alongside to his film work Jason also teaches animation online through his own site and iAnimate which I can personally recommend as a great way to learn character animation and productive workflow through traditionally-based methods, mentor-supported training sessions and clearly explained online tutorials. This week, we get to take a look at the family animated film 'Big Hero Six'! We talk about sacrifice, compares Beymax to the Holy Spirit, talk a bit about idol worship, and then use one plot device in the film to launch into a conversation about the doctrine of regeneration as well as having unity as Christians even when we disagree on secondary matters. This was a lot of fun! Want to leave us a voicemail? 304-404-4005! www.popcorntheology.com www.reformedpub.com
On this week’s show we debut a new game, which we quickly realize is basically an old game renamed but we go with it anyways. Dan also has a review for a comic that even non-comic readers will dig, Chuck is surprised by his reaction to Big Hero Six, and Greg is keeping the book recommendations going. All that and more on this week’s episode.
Hello and happy Friday Utopians! Today Josh and Ben talk about Vickie Kerr's episode earlier this week. Ben and Josh think about a comment Vickie made about sacrificing now to have the time later in life to enjoy her time with her husband and when the time came, her husband had passed. Josh and Ben both have a hard time putting themselves in her shoes and dealing with a similar situation. Our hosts also discuss gender bias towards women, especially working women and expecting mothers. Josh understands the 'old school' gender roles, though he may not agree with them, and Ben is just confused by that mindset. We also find out that Josh was a guest on a show this week (that makes two for him and zero for Ben, so far Josh is winning). Hangouts that Convert Startup Dad HQ Josh and Ben then get into Vickie's three points, and dive into the first about negativity and negative people. Our hosts explore how to remove those people from your life, even if they are family or close friends. Josh's son turned six this week, here are some of the things they did together: Big Hero Six on Amazonand iTunes Super Smash Bros on Amazon As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music!
