The DOGE committee was treated to a master class of weaponized amnesia yesterday as NPR's CEO, Katherine Maher couldn't remember any of her Lefty tweets, all of which would have made Pinnochio blush.
This week Hank is complaining about his friends living their best lives on dream vacations that he wasn't invited on then discussing the Pinnochio of pick ups, dogs and when's the best time to buy outdoor gear with Kevin. Enjoy!

Nezinu, vai tieši to Gints ar savu filmu gribēja pateikt, bet man šī doma ļoti patika: ka tas ir stāsts par izdzīvošanu, bet ne par cilvēku izdzīvošanu. (..) Man bija sajūta, ka šajā filmā redzu kādu evolūcijas pagriezienu – varbūt tieši tā sugas attīstās! Lasi par filmu "Straume" vairāk.

Grand Covenant's Fourth Law: A podcast cannot lie. Welcome back to the podcast! Lies of P is definitely a game that turned some heads when it was announced, given that it's based around Pinnochio. Set in a city overrun by automatons, stylized as puppets, who have broken their safeguards and begun attacking people, Lies of P takes its themes and ideas from Pinnochio, along with some of its characters, but not necessarily its plot. In fact, the way it manages to weave this inspiration into the rest of the game is probably its most impressive narrative feat. This is particularly notable that the thing it's weaving these elements into is just a Dark Souls game. More so than any other game we've played, on- or off-air, this really feels like a FROM designed Souls game, or at least very close to it. The combat takes heavy cues from Sekiro and Bloodborne with the healing mechanics and stats from Dark Souls, you can tell the developers have been taking notes. And this can be both good and bad, because the game feels familiar and also very good to play most of the time, but it does also call attention to elements from the games (upgrade materials, consumable items, a prosthetic) that feel more or less necessary for this game specifically. It's a strange experience to some extent, but still a very good one if this style of game is something you already enjoyed. Is this game derivative? A little, for sure, but there is still some novelty to be found, particularly in its aesthetics. This and the combat mechanics that combine the weapon variety of Dark Souls (as well as a unique weapon recombination mechanic) with the satisfying defensive options of Sekiro, mean that as much as this makes you think about where its inspirations came from, as weird as the theme of the game is on its face, and as difficult as the game can be at times, it's still a very good time. We're going to be talking about the integration of the source material into the mechanical identity of the game, how auxiliary mechanics complicate the game both for good and for bad, and how they really should have just called the game Pinnochio. Thank you for listening this week! As you can probably tell, we've been doing a bit of a Soulslike run recently, which we'll be finishing up on pocket next time, but I think it's shown just how diverse this subgenre can be. Lies of P stands out less for its own identity but more for its devotion to the identity of the games that inspired it, and it's a complicated topic to discuss. Do you think this impressive adherence to FROM's catalog will be a positive change for these types of games going forward, normalizing the base gameplay and allowing for more diversity in how those mechanics are utilized and twisted to fit the game at hand, or do you think this is just one direction for the genre to go, with the other elements taking center stage as in games like Lunacid? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're going to be sprinting as far as we possibly can in the other direction and talking about Pentiment, so we hope you'll join us then.

VFX visualization might just be the closest you can get to being a film director without stepping behind the camera. This technology has become a key part of the VFX process, with previz storyboarding growing into pitchviz (to get movies greenlit), techviz (to figure out logistics), and postviz (to create temporary VFX). It's an area Casey Pyke has become an expert in via his role at Halon Entertainment, which has helped visualize movies including The Batman, Pinnochio, Argylle, and John Wick: Chapter 4. Casey breaks down how the technology required for visualization differs from that for VFX — speed is of the essence, but looking good is increasingly important. He also talks about how his background as an amateur filmmaker helped him understand what directors want and the satisfaction of recognising his work on the big screen. Casey concludes with his experiences using LED walls and AI tools in visualization pipelines.

Recently, our friend and long time VG247 contributor Sherif Saed gave Pinnochio-themed soulslike Lies of P a bit of a pasting in his review. Our two star score prompted a lot of backlash from some quarters, and also a bit of internal discussion about the nature of opinion pieces. How reviews can sometimes be a flashpoint of controversy, and how scores don't reflect any of the nuance that led the author to their conclusion. Personally, I'm always a bit baffled by the phenomenon of people who haven't played a game kicking off online about the views of someone who has. As a wise man once said: “it's only game, why you have to be mad?” Anyway, I thought it would be funny to do an entire podcast episode on the question of other highly acclaimed games that Sherif would give two stars to. What sacred cow would he slayeth, given the task? To find out, you'll have to watch or listen to this podcast here Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Carleigh and Hannah have talked about this author before and now they tackle his newest book, In the Lives of Puppets, which is a retelling of Pinnochio with a twist (or many twists). They discussed before how his books can feel like such a hug. This one... may not exactly be a hug, but Carleigh and Hannah definitely can talk about their favorite characters for a while.Spoilers begin in minute 26.

The right to speak is critically important to allow our civilization not only to thrive but to survive. In part 2 of this compilation, we examine the power of free speech and potential responses to censorship. After a lecture excerpt on the “initial defeat of the hero,” we transition into podcast clips on hate crime laws, the idea behind 'No Safe Spaces,' and the events that lead Paul Rossi, a NY private school teacher, to take a stand against seminars on "white dominant culture" being taught as gospel. After that, we travel across the pond to speak with Andrew Doyle about the hate crime laws recently passed in the UK Parliament. —Links— Watch the full Paul Rossi episode: https://youtu.be/ysQBegyQP8A & Andrew Doyle episode: https://youtu.be/aoH1g5GYhPw —Chapters— [0:00] Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, & the Initial Defeat of the Hero [4:36] Paul Rossi: starting to bother you [10:26] There's no such thing as a conversation [15:19] Losing his job [17:30] Aspects of "white dominant culture" [30:52] "Healing resources" [32:27] A kafkaesque series of meetings [38:59] Conscience as a mirror of the divine [40:52] Andrew Doyle: why hate crime laws in Parliament matter [48:52] Western institutions: power-hungry & tyrannical [56:09] Damage without intent [57:48] Prager & Carolla: The Motivation Behind 'No Safe Spaces' [59:44] Defining far-right vs. far-left #FreeSpeech #WhiteCulture #Conscience #Pinocchio #Parliament Learn more about your ad choices.
