Welcome to our latest episode, a bit of a trip back in time, to October 2019, where, at Destination Star Trek, the 10Backward crew did Fight! 2, a sequel to our popular Fight! episode. When I say at Destination Star Trek, I mean, on stage as a schedule panel, they actually let us do that... what were they thinking? Anyway, it was quite a good one, however, we thought it might never be released as the sound quality was poor. We've been working on it and trying our best to minimise the background noise and improve the speaking. So apologies, this isn't the best audio ever, but I think you should be able to hear most of it!

In Gaming news, Star Trek Adventures raises a ton of money, Timelines introduces “Whistles and Canaries”, and Fleet Command brings the small screen to the smaller screen! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: If you're not already playing Fleet Command will this update entice you to start playing? AND CQ: Now that Lower Decks has three episodes out, are you enjoying the show? Why or why not? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Alex Kurtzman Talks Short Treks - AGAIN Alex Kurtzman and Deadline go together like the proverbial peanut butter and jelly, or is it peanut butter and chocolate, or is it chocolate and milk. Regardless, Kurtzman once again sat down with Deadline to talk turkey about Short Treks, the franchise, and his old friend. Turkey and gravy? Kurtzman discussed the birth of Short Treks, telling Deadline they had wanted initially to drop Season 2 before we would be ready to deliver everything we needed to for Season 1, and I said, ” Okay, well how about this? If you delay the drop of Season 2, what we can do is some Short Treks. We'll use our sets, and try this interesting experiment and see if it works, and it will buy us some time for Star Trek awareness to remain in the cultural conversation.” They said, “Sure, okay. Let's try it,” and we started out doing five, and people really liked them. When asked about what was the most difficult aspect of Short Treks, Kurtzman pointed to animation, but spoke highly of old friend Michael Giacchino - and how the composer's knowledge of the medium helped. what was great about working with Michael was that because he had done this already, he was very prepared for the process, and gave me a headline up front about, “Okay, you've got about three or four off-ramps along the way, and then we can't change it. So, let's make sure that we have these regular check-ins that allow us to make sure we are agreeing, and heading down the right road, so that when we get to what will become an irreversible moment, we're feeling great about it.” And that was awesome. That was really helpful for me to understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xE0ZnsgNQVU I Know The Law! Please don't tell me what I know and I don't know...I KNOW THE LAW!! Well, maybe I don't, but we have a couple of law type people here, so this conversation should be interesting! In a story that broke last week, Video Game developer Anas Abdin lost his Second Circuit Court case against CBS and Netflix. Our script isn't going to deep-dive into this, because frankly the writer doesn't know as much as the two experts currently present. In short, the first filing of the suit - which alleged Abdin's in-development point-and-click space-faring adventure game featuring a gay couple and intergalactic tardigrades was infringed on by “Star Trek: Discovery”'s first season story line and characters - was dismissed by the court for the Southern District of New York.  On August 17th, Abdin's second go at litigation was as successful as his first, with the judge saying in part “Abdin's space-traveling tardigrade is an unprotectable idea because it is a generalized expression of a scientific fact—namely, the known ability of a tardigrade to survive in space […] By permitting Abdin to exclusively own the idea of a space-traveling tardigrade, this Court would improperly withdraw that idea from the public domain and stifle creativity naturally flowing from the scientific fact that tardigrades can survive the vacuum of space.” Do you want to know the law? WAY BACK in Priority One Podcast episode 344 we talked about the possibility of a Galaxy Quest television series. Those hopes were dashed with the unfortunate passing of the great Alan Rickman. This week, Collider talked with would-be showrunner of the Galaxy Quest series - Dean Parisot - about his upcoming “Bill and Ted” sequel, but the conversation took a turn towards Galaxy Quest. Parisot confirmed the series was in planning, and that Alan Rickman's passing was the reason for the shows cancellation - but he was vague about whether it was REALLY cancelled or mostly cancelled, saying “We couldn't go forward after that because we loved Alan, who was the sweetest, most generous person on the planet. We just couldn't see it without him. We're still talking about it all the time. Who knows.” Later, Parisot discussed the general plot of the film, telling Collider “It was finding these guys, they're even more pathetic because it's 15 years or 20 years later. Tim Allen's character lets it go that he really went to outer space and have been mocked ever since, they lost their TV show and they're even more of a disaster. It was a great opening because they were asked to go to Comic Con and they think it's because they're going to reinvigorate the series but instead they're going to hand it off to a younger group of actors. So Jason Nesmeth [Allen's character] gets in a horrible fistfight on stage and it went from there.” Rumor Report We'd also like to take a quick second and note that - from James Cawley Facebook page - The Very Large Enterprise Model that greeted fans at the entrance of the old STAR TREK THE EXPERIENCE will be warping it's way to STAR TREK: ORIGINAL SERIES SET TOUR for permanent display! Of course the enigmatic 5-star Humanoid Figure returns as event crew as well, no doubt with their own nefarious agenda in mind. Star Trek Fleet Command: Oh Yeah, TV, That's A Thing Isn't It Launched almost two years ago, Star Trek Fleet Command lets players continue the continuity established by the Abrams Trek films–or the “Kelvin Timeline,” if you're feeling formal. Since then, twenty-one updates have built out a detailed world for an otherwise narrowly-defined narrative. But in the near future, players might look through the lens flare and ask “new content, who Dis?”...Discovery, that is.On August 24th, game developer Scopely announced outcomes from a recent discussion with ViacomCBS about Fleet Command's success as a game. “The important news was that Star Trek Fleet Command will soon welcome all of Star Trek's past, present, and future. That includes the film and TV series from the Star Trek Original Series, Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise....Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and more to come.” Fleet Command intends to release content arcs focused on one TV series at a time, though a narrative path through the end of this year has yet to be determined. Interactions between story arc elements will depend on the choices that players make when assembling their crews.

Rick Sternbach on designing Star Trek’s future. As senior illustrator on The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, Rick Sternbach shaped the look of Star Trek’s 24th century. He contributed to the design of the titular Cardassian space station, was responsible for the USS Voyager’s smooth cetacean styling, and worked on alien vessels such as the Borg Cube. With his iconic design for the PADD, he helped inspire real-world devices such as Apple’s iPad, which owes a lot to the futuristic tablets shown on screen throughout the 1990s. And in his work with Michael Okuda—including on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, published in 1991—he laid the groundwork for much of the science of Starfleet ships, developing concepts such as inertial dampeners and structural integrity fields, as well as that fan-favorite department that was, sadly, never glimpsed on screen: Cetacean Ops. In this episode of Primitive Culture, recorded at the Destination Star Trek convention in Birmingham, England, host Duncan Barrett speaks to Sternbach as part of a roundtable press panel. They discuss what influenced him as a designer and how he started as a Hollywood illustrator, his work on Star Trek, and his thoughts on the future look of the franchise. He also answers a question that has been lingering for almost a quarter century: What happened to the whales when the Enterprise-D saucer crashed? Star Trek and Theatre. As Q told Picard, all the galaxy’s a stage. Both the Bard-bothering captain and his real-world alter ego, Patrick Stewart, who was famously dubbed “unknown British Shakespearean actor” by the Los Angeles Times when he first took on the role—are better placed than most to appreciate the wisdom of these words. And Star Trek has always had one foot in the old-school theatrical tradition as much as it has been defined by the almost magical possibilities of television. Not for nothing do we refer to some of the best Trek episodes as “morality plays.” In this episode of Primitive Culture, recorded live at the Destination Star Trek convention in Birmingham, England, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Tony Black for a look at the debt Star Trek owes to the theatre. Whether in the casting of Shakespearean heavyweights such as Stewart, David Warner, and Christopher Plummer, or in the presence of companies of players—both amateur and professional—aboard the starships of the future, Star Trek consistently maintains a link to its theatrical roots. Indeed, some popular episodes, such as Deep Space Nine’s “Waltz” and Enterprise’s “Shuttlepod One” are structured as near-one-act plays in their own right. Join us as we raise the curtain and take a look at Star Trek on the stage. Destination Star Trek 2019 thoughts On the saturday evening of Destination Star Trek 2019, we recorded some thoughts of the day after a few drinks. These are those.

Primitive Culture: A Star Trek History and Culture Podcast

Fan encounters in Star Trek and beyond. For Star Trek fans, conventions offer a rare chance to get up close and personal with their heroes—whether that means snapping a selfie, getting an autograph, or buying them a drink at the bar. But Star Trek’s characters aren’t immune to the power of celebrity themselves. Many, in fact, find themselves distinctly star-struck in the presence of their own role models. Sometimes the experience can be disillusioning, as in the case of Zefram Cochrane in First Contact. The legendary inventor warp drive turned out to be less the bold pioneer of an enlightened age and more a lecherous drunk with a bad attitude. On the Holodeck, however, such encounters can be managed with less risk of disappointment, hence the appearances of such real-life luminaries as Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and even Stephen Hawking. In this special episode of Primitive Culture, recorded live at the Destination Star Trek convention in Birmingham, England, host Duncan Barrett is joined by five fellow Trekkies for a look at Star Trek’s fan encounters. We consider how our heroes’ own fanboy and fangirl moments offer a glimpse into their personalities, why Star Trek invests so much time in historical figures—real and fictitious—and how our expectations of the actors we encounter at conventions are colored by the characters they portray on screen. Chapters Intro (00:00:00) Heroes on the Holodeck (00:09:02) Lower Decks (00:17:15) Celebrity Cameos (00:23:43) Host Duncan Barrett Guests Drew Barker, Murray Christison, Dana Kazim, Ben Keeling, and Terry Parsons Production Duncan Barrett (Producer, Editor) C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer) Ken Tripp (Executive Producer) Tony Black (Associate Producer) Clara Cook (Associate Producer) Norman C. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Where does Galaxy Quest rank (if at all) on your list of favorite Trek films? AND CQ: With the new changes to the Event Campaign for another T6 ship will you be playing daily to get your progression or do you plan on buying out any of the individual events? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection on Blu Ray If your ideal Starfleet Captain is principled, intelligent, diplomatic, tough, inspiring… in a word, Picard, then it’s a great time to be a Trekkie! Just in time to prepare yourself for the forthcoming Picard series, CBS Home Entertainment has released a six disc Blu Ray set dedicated to the great Captain himself.   Titled the “Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection”, the set includes all four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies (Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis) as well as special editions of two-part episodes “The Best of Both Worlds” and “Chain of Command”.  These specially reconfigured episodes have been edited to play both parts seamlessly, like a single film.  The new Blu Ray set also includes over 10 hours of previously released special features, like behind-the-scenes interviews and featurettes, gag reels, deleted scenes, and more. And to cap off the set, IDW Publishing, the home of official Star Trek comics, has created an exclusive 16-page comic book titled “Star Trek: Sky’s The Limit”. Several sample pages of the issue are previewed on StarTrek.com. In the preview, we pick up with a scene of the Enterprise-D crew reminiscent of where “All Good Things” left them - playing poker with Captain Picard. Just as Riker applies the pressure to Picard, calling his bluff, the game is interrupted by a priority Starfleet communication. The Enterprise must respond to a Maquis hostage situation on Akavan 3. Sir Patrick Stewart Beaming Into Destination Star Trek And if you’re an international Star Trek fan who watched, maybe a little enviously, while we brought you our New York Comic Con and PaleyFest coverage of Star Trek Picard, then hold your breath no longer and book your trip to Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, England.   The Captain himself, Sir Patrick Stewart, has been confirmed as a special guest appearing on Saturday, October 26th to talk about the new show. Tickets to his appearance in the main theater are available through the event website, linked in our show notes.  Each ticket also includes a limited edition DST “Star Trek: Picard” poster. UK’s Channel 4 Buys Into Star Trek: Discovery In other news of interest to our U.K. listeners, British TV network Channel 4 has purchased the rights to stream Star Trek: Discovery on their E4 digital channel, along with the comedy “Man With a Plan” starring Matt LeBlanc.  According to CBS Studios International president of sales, Barry Chamberlain, “Channel 4 is already a licensee for several of our top-rated franchises, including ‘The Good Fight’ and ‘Charmed’, and we are confident they will have continued success with ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and ‘Man With a Plan’.” Galaxy Quest Documentary Coming to Theaters If I asked you, “What’s the funniest Star Trek movie, what would be your answer?” Obviously, the only right answer is the 1999 classic “Galaxy Quest”! We’re coming up on the film’s 20th anniversary, and Fathom Events have announced a One-Day-Only special event “Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary”.  The documentary, which will screen on November 26th in select theaters, explores how the movie has become a cult classic and fan favorite.   The film features interviews with almost the entire cast, including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Rockwell, as well as appearances by Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner and other celebrities. Sadly, of course, Alan Rickman passed away before he could be interviewed, but his cast mates share their touching recollections of working with him. Roth Cornet, a producer, says “If you love Alan Rickman, that's the moment for me, when we talk about Alan passing. I got choked up.” Of the documentary and the film itself, Cornet also says “Something like this highlights [that] when people love something and they come together, it can really, really, really have a huge impact on their whole life, even just a little movie about a TV show. And we're making a documentary about a movie about a TV show.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Anthony Cox U.S.S. Franklin from Star Trek Beyond The Kelvin Universe continues its invasion of Star Trek Online with the newest Tier 6 ship being that of the U.S.S. Franklin, from the third Kelvin-JJ-Lens Flare movie, Star Trek Beyond. The Freedom-class exploration frigate features a Lt. Commander Universal/Miracle Worker Bridge Officer Station and a Lt. Commander Universal/Pilot station. It can be equipped with 5 forward weapons and 5 tactical consoles. It comes with the Universal console, VHF Disruptive Transmission, which when activated blasts high frequency radio waves towards nearby foes dealing electrical damage, and will increase the ship’s maneuverability. The console also passively boosts electrical damage and hull capacity. The level five starship mastery trait is Smooth Landing, when slotted activating Evasive Maneuvers will apply Brace for Impact, and activating Brace for Impact will also apply Evasive Maneuvers. You can obtain the Freedom-class frigate from the Special Requisition Choice Pack found in Research and Development packs from now until October 31st. R&D packs purchased from the Ceeeee-store will grant either 10 Lobi crystals or the Tier 6 Promotion Ship Choice pack. You can choose from any of the previous ship available in the choice pack or you can fly home this brand new U.S.S. Franklin style Freedom-class frigate. For more details and stats on the ship, trek out the show notes. Defend the Kobayashi Maru to Earn another Free T6 Ship With the return of Starfleet’s ultimate test, the Kobayashi Maru, captains on PC can also earn rewards towards another free Tier 6 ship from the Ceeee-store. You can now find the event details in the shiney new Events tab in the mission journal. There are a few changes to the event. First, the amount of progress needed to claim the reward has been reduced from 3,000 to 2,100. Because the overall progress is spread over several events, when you use the buyout option for a single event you will receive up to 700 progress in the Event Campaign. The actual amount will be determined based on the amount of progress you’ve already made in the single event and the pro-rated discount. There will still be bonus progress periods, however, expect them to be less frequent this time around. Also, the Kobayashi Maru scenario will see some changes as a Featured TFO. There is no minimum level to participate. As long as your character has completed the tutorial, chosen an allegiance for Romulan and Jem’hadar, or traveled to the present timeline for Discovery and TOS characters, they can participate in the TFO. Also, while the TFO is featured it will complete after wave 6 and the failure conditions of either all players being dead or the transport being destroyed have been removed. After its run as the featured TFO the “infinite” version of the scenario will return with the failure conditions and normal rewards. This feature TFO runs from now until November 7th. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS A couple KDF fleets are getting much closer to Tier V Colony Upgrades - House of Martok and House of Mogh - well done all, keep those colony projects filled. Weekly Top Tip The Gambling Device, found in the Lobi store for 30 crystals, is probably the best buff device you can get. For those of you not familiar with the Gambling Device, it’s a ground item that when you activate and win, it will buff you +10% Crit Chance, +10% Crit Severity, +15 Dodge for one hour. If you lose it will give you negative buffs for one minute. Now the really great thing about the Gambling Device is that you can remove it and swap in another device without removing the buff. Now don’t get too excited, this buff does not stack with Tribbles. But if you really need that Laser Dino, Hypospray, Frequency Remodulation, and Shard of Possibilities, you can swap in the Gambling Device, buff up, and then swap the good stuff back in.

Primitive Culture: A Star Trek History and Culture Podcast

Star Trek and Repertory Theatre. Compared with other science fiction shows, Star Trek has always been remarkably versatile, capable of rapidly switching genres, from romantic comedy one week to courtroom drama the next. For the actors hired to play given roles—sometimes for seven years or more—a similar versatility is required. This is perhaps most striking when they are called on to portray a character who other than the one to which their name is tied in the credits. This could be an ancestor, a Holodeck invention, a counterpart from the Mirror Universe, or even a dreamworld alter-ego such as Benny Russell. But for British actors of a certain vintage—Patrick Stewart among them—these challenges are nothing new. Thanks to the traditional repertory system, which would see a cast of players perform a completely new show every week, from Shakespeare to Noel Coward and beyond, these actors are always ready to step into another skin. In this special Primitive Culture roundtable, recorded during the Destination Star Trek convention in Birmingham, UK, hosts Duncan Barrett and Clara Cook are joined by guests old and new to discuss the parallels between Star Trek and the old repertory system. We discuss the peculiar challenges faced by Star Trek actors and why the shows have traditionally favored those with a background in theatre, and share some of our own favorite episodes in which the regular cast take on new roles. Live from Destination Star Trek. Star Trek has always been influenced by real-world history. But, over the course of more than half a century, certain topics have recurred again and again, suffusing the imaginary world of the future with the legacies of our own, often troubled past. Two key influences in particular—World War II and the literature and culture of the sea—have been a pervasive influence on Star Trek’s storytelling, from the earliest episodes of The Original Series right up to Discovery. In this episode of Primitive Culture, we present two panels recorded live at Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, UK. In the first, hosts Clara Cook and Duncan Barrett are joined by Primitive Culture co-founder Tony Black, former Earl Grey host Lee Hutchison, and Dr. Trek himself, Larry Nemecek. In the first, the group discusses the debt Star Trek owes to the history of World War II. In the second, Duncan and Tony explore Star Trek’s nautical influences, from Horatio Hornblower to Moby-Dick. Larry Nemecek is author of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companionand Stellar Cartography, and host of The Trek Files podcast: http://thetrekfiles.trekfm.libsynpro.com/website Lee Hutchison hosts Filibuster on The Nerd Party podcast network: https://www.thenerdparty.com/filibuster Tony Black runs The X-Cast podcast network and the entertainment website Set the Tape https://setthetape.com/ Duncan’s book Star Trek: The Human Frontier is available to order from Amazon: https://amzn.to/2PplQQ7 Chapters Intro (00:00:00) The Shadow of WWII (00:01:46) Never Forgetting (00:12:30) Heroism and Adventure (00:22:35) Q&A (00:26:25) The Starry Sea (00:35:13) Moby-Dick (00:43:30) Dead metaphors (00:49:20) Q&A (00:55:30) Hosts Duncan Barrett and Clara Cook Guests Tony Black, Lee Hutchison, Larry Nemecek Production Clara Cook (Editor) Duncan Barrett (Producer) C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer) Ken Tripp (Executive Producer) Tony Black (Associate Producer) Norman C. Looking back on DS9 at Destination Star Trek 2018. Perhaps more than any other Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine has seen its reputation continue to rise in the years since it went off the air.

In this back up episode from our lost files back in October 2012, we recall our thoughts and feelings about the very first Destination Star Trek in London! Note the sound quality is different to what it is today as the episode does get quite loud at certain points, so we would recommend listening to it at a lower volume. Enjoy listening!

Coda. Jeri Taylor wrote the book on Janeway. Literally. Two of them in fact! So it was no surprise that a third-season story about Janeway's death came from her pen. "Coda" pulls together a number of familiar Star Trek themes to explore issues of death, how it affects both the survivors and the deceased, and even throws in a Dying Swan for good measure. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Tristan Riddell, and Suzanne Abbott to discuss Janeway's brush with death, Chakotay's outpouring of emotion, what Jeri Taylor brings to Janeway that other writers can't, and whether or not this mishmash of ideas comes together to create a satisfying whole. In our news segments we find out where the next Destination Star Trek with land, take a peek at Patrick Stewart's new TV series, learn about the latest honor for William Shatner—this time from NASA—and find out what decision almost made in 1966 could have changed the course of Star Trek.

Trek News and Views: A Star Trek Podcast

Barge of the Dead. B'Elanna tried hard to distance herself from her Klingon side, but when she died in a shuttle accident she was forced to face her heritage in Gre'thor. In this episode of Trek News & Views we're joined by Mariel Keeran, Steve Roberts, and Michael J. Medeiros to discuss "Barge of the Dead," the probable sacrifice with which B'Elanna was faced, how much she came to embrace her Klingon background, and how she finally made peace with her mother. Plus, we discover that she is the MacGyver of Star Trek and that Voyager seems to be towing the universe's largest leola root across the Delta Quadrant. In news we hear JJ apologize for the lens flares, crack open a book of Juan Ortiz's Trek art, catch the Voyage Trekkers season two finale, try on the ThinkGeek and Her Universe t-shirt contest, find out which captain StarTrek.com voters feel had the most respect for The Prime Directive, and brush up our German for the next Destination Star Trek con.
