Send us a textOn January 12, 2025, Anchorage's Ted Stevens International Airport experienced high winds and severe turbulence that made it very difficult for landing aircraft. Lake Hood was temporarily closed and most of all other air traffic was diverted to Fairbanks International Airport. A heavy 777 Korean Cargo plane had to execute 3 missed approaches before safely landing. The teamwork of the air traffic controllers and pilots, who depend on information from weather models and wind data, can attempt to divert airliners from air pockets that contained unstable air causing the severe turbulence. Today's special guest is Climatologist, Brian Brettschneider, a dedicated Alaska Climate Specialist. Brian is developing weather models that illustrate variants of month to month meteorological flight conditions such as IFR, VFR and MVFR. Brian also talks about springtime in Alaska, including wildfire preparedness and awareness as well as discussion of a possible Mt. Spurr volcanic eruption in 2025.Thank you for tuning into the Alaska Climate and Aviation Podcast!Katie Writerktphotowork@gmail.comSupport the showYou can visit my website for links to other episodes and see aerial photography of South Central Alaska at:https://www.katiewritergallery.com

Climatologists and medical experts are in agreement about the detrimental impact of excessive meat consumption on both our environment and health. Industrial livestock farming is responsible for a significant 15% of global CO2 emissions, and it also raises ethical concerns regarding animal welfare. In light of these concerns, it recently emerged that UK meat consumption is at its lowest level since record begun. Government data showed that in 2022, people ate an average of 854g of meat per week, which is down 14% compared to a decade ago. For those cutting down on meat or giving it up completely, alternatives like legumes can provide similar nutrients. But completely changing one's dietary habits and cooking style can be daunting. One new solution on the horizon is 3D-printed meat, both in plant-based and animal-based form. How exactly do you print meat? Is it actually a healthier option then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: What do you get better at with age? Climate science and reporting are vital to understanding how our climate is changing and what we can do about it. But false information about climate change spread online is causing big problems. In this ClimateGenn episode I am speaking with Extinction Rebellion cofounder, Gail Bradbrook, about the role of activism today and the inner world of those taking action that can and does result in severe imprisonment, and in some countries, even death. ORDER COPOUT BY NICK BREEZE: https://genn.cc/copout-nick-breeze/ GAILS LINKS: https://www.praler.net/ https://buymeacoffee.com/gailbradbrook/the-leadership-able-bring-just-transition Gail identifies her own position on taking risks and how, in her words, to "live an honourable life in these times.” Climate activists in the UK today risk prison sentences that we might expect to be handed out to people convicted of violent crimes, presenting a danger to society. But by silencing dissenting voices, the risk to society is that collective failings can be easily be swept under the carpet. During COP21 in Paris, Naomi Klein pointed out that the pressure of activists between the failed COP in Copenhagen 2009 and COP21 Paris 2015, created the momentum for countries to come together and sign the Paris Agreement. Since then the world has changed dramatically with climate impacts pushing the thresholds of safety for communities all around the world. The failure of countries to honour their Paris commitments is contributing to the severe climatic consequences we are seeing now. In a recent email I received, the case was put that activist calls for revolution are misplaced because we do not have time to restructure our society before large impacts overwhelm our ability to adapt. However, many activist calls - like Gail here - are for expanded democracy, such as the creation of civil assemblies, where citizens are given expert insights, allowing them to better inform policy. In this sense, the role of activism is to maintain momentum towards better policies that increase adaptation and resilience in as fair and equitable way as possible. Next ClimateGenn Episode With carbon emissions stubbornly high, we are seeing the rising trend of destruction. In the next ClimateGenn episode I speak with Climatologist, Professor Hayley Fowler from the University of Newcastle and Chief Meteorologist at the UK Met Office, Paul Davies. We discuss their work bridging the gap between meteorology and climatology to enhance severe storm warning systems in order to save lives. Whether in Europe, North Africa, the US, Philippines, the Himalayas, or beyond, severe life threatening storms are increasing in strength and frequency, in all cases posing an existential threat. Paul and Hayley discuss the intricacies of how these storms form and how they have found new ways to decipher critical signals within the expanse of noisy data. This episode will be available to subscribers very shortly and be public in a weeks time. Thank you to all subscribers and to everyone who has gotten in touch with feedback and episode suggestions. It is greatly appreciated. Remember you can support this channel by subscribing on Patreon or Youtube, as well as by ordering my book ‘COPOUT - How governments have failed the people on climate' which is available worldwide in paperback and audio. COPOUT is based on my UN COP reporting from Paris 2015 to Dubai 2023. I take the reader behind the scenes to witness first-hand how the failure of successive global climate summits has led us to this era of dangerous consequences. Thanks again for listening.

We also got to speak with Oregon's official State Climatologist, Larry O'Neill. We had such a great conversation and he shared really interesting insights into Oregon's climate, how it's changing, and even how we measure these changes and how that data can be used to inform policies. So, we thought we'd share this extended interview with Larry O'Neill in this special bonus episode. Hope you enjoy! blogs.oregonstate.edu/orcs/oregon-cl…vice/our-team/ Grounded theme music by Oregon artist, Jana Cushman.

An update on Minnesota's long-lasting drought came Thursday morning and the news is looking good! For the first time since 2020, the vast majority of Minnesota is no longer in a drought at all. That news came just before Gov. Tim Walz is to announce the air quality forecast for this summer at 2 p.m.The hope is that the lack of drought means less wildfire — and smoky air — for the next few months. The end of the drought is also a huge relief to farmers statewide. For perspective on what this report means, MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with state climatologist Luigi Romolo and Lindsay Pease, a professor of nutrient and water management at the University of Minnesota.
