On today's episode I chat with Commando Steve. Steve Willis rose to fame during his time as 'The Commando' on The Biggest Loser back in 2007. The evolution of Commando Steve over the years saw him go on to write 3 books, compete in the CrossFit games, acted on Home & Away and become a contestant on Survivor. Steve now owns 'Get Commando Fit' down in Sydney and is a Dad to 4 gorgeous kids I was absolutely obsessed with The Biggest Loser. I knew all the contestants, I knew all the trainers, I knew everyone and loved it. So when I had a rush of courage and reached out to Commando Steve to be on the podcast, I actually didn't expect him to respond. After all, he's a busy guy and he's Commando Steve. I was absolutely gobsmacked when he replied to say he'd love to be on the podcast. So here we are There's so much more to Steve than camo pants and black sunglasses. For the first time on my own podcast, I was pretty much speechless. He is so insightful about everything. Everything he says can be applied to everyones lives During this chat you'll hear my baby, Jack, carrying on at times. Whilst I organised for him to hang out with his Dad, he clearly just wanted to hang out with Commando Steve too. So if you hear weird noises and the occasional whinge...it's just my needy child. But that's life, right? We can't always create the perfect circumstances and so we do whatever we can do get the job done You can follow Commando Steve on IG here Check out his website, here If you are interested in training at The Barracks Gym to improve your fitness for your ADF or Police application, head over to our website to check it out. Steve Willis has been training and training humans for a very very long time. It’s only with this kind of life dedicated to all things physical that you can have the kind of insight that Steve has. And it’s evident. I love talking to this guy and tapping into his knowledge and insight. He’s measured, honest and forthright, yet at the same time, you can just tell that if he was your Coach, he’d be right in your corner! This chat covers training, of course, how he managed 2020, how his own experiences have shaped his philosophy (don’t they all) the value of the elements and being outdoors, and a little bit about his favorite kit for setting up your own home training space. If you’re in Sydney or you want to connect with Steve as a Coach here are his details. Enjoy the Podcast.@commandosteve@getcommandofitwww.commandosteve.com

Perhaps most appropriately, when I met up with Steve Willis a few days ago in a lovely inner suburb of Sydney, we conducted the Podcast as he sat cross-legged, Yoga style, on the floor of his apartment building gym. I took the easier option, requiring a lot less flexibility, and sat on the seat of the Lat Pulldown. This was a Podcast I’d been trying to put together for some while, I personally I knew of him and about him like most people in Australia, as a trainer on the hit TV show, Biggest Loser and most recently as a contestant on the reality show Survivor, where he lasted 40 days (of 50 in total). We had a really honest and open chat, underpinned by Steve’s insightful and introspective view on how he wants to live and stay calm, present and in the moment as our increasingly busy world spins around us. We talked about his foray into the elite levels of CrossFit, (he placed 4th at the 2009 Games) his career in the elite special forces of the military, and his journey into the highly demanding job of prime-time reality TV. It seems that no matter what this guy touches in his world and what area of business he is involved in – he simply gives everything his greatest effort and attention to detail. He’s gathered his skills over time, he’s a learner of life’s lessons and he’s clearly a passionate and soulful being who’s doing great things in the Health, Fitness and Wellness industry, giving back to others and being a great example of living his own values on a daily basis. When I spoke to him, it was a very smooth, easy conversation, but packed with valuable and insightful lessons and truths. He’s definitely in command of his life, I hope you enjoy this Podcast with Steve Willis. Instagram: commandosteve Facebook: commando steve www.commandosteve.com

I know how easy it is to tell yourself stories that hold you back and negatively alter the way you view the world around you. These stories, often created by self-doubt and ego, become our identity. It’s not until we let go of this unhelpful ways of thinking, that we are truly able to be present, live life to it’s fullest and create deep self-worth and inner peace. Today’s guest knows what it’s like to be blocked by these stories as well as the strength and balance you can gain by overcoming them and mastering your mind. Steve Willis, also known as Commando Steve from his time as a trainer on The Biggest Loser, shares openly about his struggles, proudest moments and lessons from across his varied experiences. Before becoming a personal trainer, Steve joined the army to gain an apprenticeship and work as a tradesman in the military. Driven by a need to be accepted and respected by his peers, he moved into the school of infantry and eventually joined Special Forces. After leaving the Special Forces he auditioned for the Biggest Loser which helped lead to him finding his calling. This chat with Steve will help you overcome unhelpful habits such as self-doubt, the imposter syndrome, craving appreciation of others and the use of negative stories. To do this, he shares with you ways to create even more strength and balance by mastering your mind. Some questions and topics Steve and I talk about are below:- What was Commando Steve’s first dream job? Steve and I talk about his drive at the start of his military career. Steve talks about how the ego can be a roadblock. We can often tell ourselves stories. When we use the same stories long enough, we identify and attach to those stories, using them as a lens that we see the world through. To have a fullness of life we need to have balance and polarity with everything we do. We need to have time to be present and aware, amongst the stress and anxiety of anything we face. How did you make the jump from being a member of Special Forces to The Biggest Loser? Steve’s strategy for overcoming negative internal dialogue. Steve talks about his final season of The Biggest Loser and how his experience with the Auvales family affected him. Commando Steve recommends these books to get started! Resilience - Eric Greitens The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle Books by Thich Nhat Hanh Rapid fire questions from the listeners: Matt - What is your morning routine? Ted - What are your daily non-negotiables? Lobenzo - What was it like going from a secretive commando to being in the public eye? Rob - What is your biggest sacrifice and/or what keeps you motivated? Mel - How do you create work, life, family and training balance? Steve answers the rocking chair test. What does Do Life Better mean to Steve? Respect for yourself and what it means to be human. Firstly, in your thoughts, and the way you perceive yourself which will give positive emotions. Secondly nutrition, so eating as healthy as possible but also not to deny yourself the tasty things. Thirdly exercise and your body and wellbeing. Steve’s challenge for the week: Create some ‘Ma’ which is the Japanese word for space. SEARCHING FOR OUR IDENTITY This week we're privileged to have on the show Steve Willis (a.k.a Commando Steve). Steve is one of Australia's top trainers, is a former competitive Crossfit Athlete and served a commando in Australia's elite special forces. Steve is an incredibly deep thinker and has an impressive mindfulness practice - this leads to some thought provoking conversation, as well as some great advice all the listeners should take note of. A surprising side of Steve is that despite his many successes he is still on a journey to find himself... and that's the truth he portrays in answer to his essay question: "You have been a high performer in both the most secret of situations and the most public. What is a universal truth people should employ themselves, to be best prepared for their moment of success?" We discussed Awareness, the realisation that your life is a result of your choices and the clarity in simplicity. This is one of our favourite epsiodes thus far. Enjoy the Show.
