In this episode, Anna Smith welcomes film critic Corrina Antrobus back to Girls On Film to discuss her brand new book, I Love Romcoms and I am a Feminist: A Manifesto in 100 Romcoms. Anna is also joined by film critic Jo-Ann Titmarsh who shares her highlights direct from the Venice International Film Festival. First up, Corrina begins by discussing two Girls On Film romcom favourites - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and She's Gotta Have It, which both feature in our pod's intro jingle. She highlights the romcoms that have often been overlooked in the genre, as well as the underlying feminism of the popular, mainstream romcoms which are often dismissed as anti-feminist. Corrina also notes the importance of diverse representation and some of the challenges of finding examples of trans romances in the romcom genre, but that by pushing for change, she has hope that things will change. **Note that there are mild spoilers for classic romcoms in this segment.** Next up, Jo-Ann shares the exciting buzz of this year's Venice International Film Festival and discusses her festival favourites. She notes how this year's fest consists of all-out glamour and fabulous women rocking the red carpet and discusses her film highlights, including her top performances by women including Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton and Angelina Jolie. She notes the films to look out for, and ends by discussing the long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice. You can buy Corrina Antrobus's book I Love Romcoms and I am a Feminist: A Manifesto in 100 Romcoms at most book retailers including Waterstones, Blackwells, WH Smith and Amazon. Anna talks to two of the women who changed the world with their anti-nuclear protests at the Greenham Common Peace Camp in the 1980s. Chris Drake and Rebecca Johnson both camped at Greenham Common for years at a time, and now their stories are being told in Briar March's new documentary, Mothers of the Revolution. First, Anna discusses this release with two top critics, Corrina Antrobus and Angela Errigo. They discuss how much they knew of Greenham before watching the film, the galvanising spirit of the documentary, and how movements started at our kitchen tables may be the answer to tackling our own issues of the day. This episode considers the passion behind female protest, how it is depicted in the media, and why it is often left undocumented or celebrated, despite its epic history. Anna talks about this with both the critics and Chris Drake, who has some heartfelt words of encouragement for listeners. Chris and Rebecca also recall some spine-tingling memories of the Greenham camp from moments of terror to triumph, horror and humour. Mothers of the Revolution is available now on digital download. A grieving Abigail tends to her withdrawn husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) as free-spirit Tallie bristles at the jealous control of her husband Finney (Christopher Abbott), when together their intimacy begins to fill a void in each other's lives they never knew existed. This week I’m joined by Corrina Antrobus, who is very much someone I started the podcast with the intent to interview. As you can tell by the runtime, we covered a lot, which is predominantly due to the fact that Corrina is a very busy woman and has had a really dynamic career, so there were lots of threads to explore. Corrina started out in VOD marketing for Virgin Movies, having worked her way up from receptionist and then moved over to Picturehouse Cinemas & Picturehouse Entertainment to become their Communications Manager, handling press and PR for releases such as God’s Own Country, Animals, The Wife, Out of Blue, Capernaum, The Last Tree and Monos. She recently left that job to become Arts and Culture Communications Officer for Hackney, so we talk about what prompted that move, how she felt about slightly leaving the world of film and what projects she’s currently working on. And then on top of that Corrina is the founder of Bechdel Test Fest -  an ongoing screening collective who present films with a positive representation for women in film that she runs alongside Beth Webb, Steph Watts and Caitlin Quinlan who are all incredible women with many a side hustle in their own right. The first event I ever went to was a 25th anniversary screening of Thelma & Louise, and I’ve since been to several sold-out screenings that they’ve put on, always with a really thoughtfully considered panel that provides fresh context to older films.  We devote a big chunk of the interview to talking about what prompted Corrina to start the festival, what her programming principles are and how she got the thing up and running. Alongside that we talk about the power of social media, the importance of seeing positive representations of women and people of colour, what Corrina has learnt since setting up the festival and the advice she would pass on to anyone wanted to run their own collective. And in a podcast first, we also discuss redundancy and how Corrina dealt with her experience of that. It’s a really lovely episode I think - Corrina is incredibly smart and thoughtful and there are lots of other topics I could’ve and would’ve love to pick her brain about, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job of covering her many passions and pursuits and I hope you enjoy hearing about them. This is episode 45 of Best Girl Grip.

It’s episode 98! Corrina and Sarah from Picturehouse Podcast return for Corrina’s choice, the 2000 Christian Bale film American Psycho. American Psycho is a 2000 film by Mary Hannon based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis starring Christian Bale, Reece Witherspoon, Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe and Chloë Sevigny - if that doesn’t get you excited then go home now. Misunderstood on its release, loosely thrown into the horror pile for its strangely minimal violence onscreen (most is implied and it doesn’t even come close to the book) despite being a darkly hilarious journey into white privilege, toxic masculinity and rampant consumerism. Despite Ellis himself saying he didn’t think the film was necessary it feels more necessary in today’s ever more unbelievable society and feels every bit as uncomfortable. If anything it deserves a revisit just for Christian Bale’s performance. Before he focused on physical transformations, Batman and winning Oscars he very nearly killed his career with this hilarious and disturbing performance (apparently inspired by Tom Cruise - the person not one of his characters), the studios wanted Leo di Caprio and what a different film that would have been. Scores [supsystic-tables id=101] Unsurprisingly American Psycho scored very generously across all categories and guests and scores a very high 4.37 overall. What do you guys think? On International Women's Day, take a second to ask yourself - do the films you love pass the almighty Bechdel Test? In order to pass, The Bechdel Test asks that a film or piece of fiction features at least two female characters that interact with each other without mentioning a man. That seems simple enough, you might think? It’s actually much rarer than you imagine. Founder of the UK’s Bechdel Test Fest, Corrina Antrobus, sheds light on what drove her to set up her own film festival as she reveals her top three favourite movies... ...but do they pass the test too? Featured films: Moonlight (2016, Barry Jenkins) Broadcast News (1987, James L Brookes) Set It Off (1996, F. Garry Gray) Thanks to @corinnacorrina Find out more about the Bechdel Test Fest and their events: http://bechdeltestfest.com/ Presented by @antoniaobrien Produced by @karenellenbevan Show us some love on twitter using #AdmitOne And don’t forget to rate/review our podcast you lovely, lovely people x

With Cat Cooper, Corrina Antrobus, Leslee Udwin, Jeanie Finlay and Debra Zimmerm
