On this episode, we were joined by Lola Kirke, the British-American actress and musician known for Mozart in the Jungle, Mistress America, and Gone Girl, who has written Wild West Village—a witty and moving essay collection described by Booklist as the “Andy Warhol Diaries for rich New York City art kids of the new millennium.”The book follows Kirke's famous family—including her father, Simon (drummer for Free and Bad Company), and her sister, Jemima (of HBO's Girls)—from West London to the West Village, as Lola navigates life in a family of larger-than-life personalities who party hard, exude effortless cool, and embody talent, beauty, and sophistication.
Lola Kirke grew up feeling like an outsider in her larger-than-life family of creatives. In her new book titled "Wild West Village," she details some of the memories of growing up in that family, and, as she told KMUW's Beth Golay, how the experience influenced who she is today - an actress and country music singer.
Lola Kirke has played many roles as an actress (“Mozart in the Jungle,” “Gone Girl,” “Winning Time”), but as a musician her sights have always been set squarely on Country. After relocating from Los Angeles to Nashville in 2020, Kirke devoted herself to honing the craft she'd come to admire so deeply in artists like The Judds, The Pistol Annies, and Dolly Parton. Shortly thereafter, she released her critically acclaimed sophomore LP “Lady For Sale” on the much respected Third Man Records in 2022, and played sold out shows with the likes of Jenny Lewis, and Margo Price. This past February Lola made her Grand Ol Opry debut and most recently become the newest addition to the cast of Ryan Coogler‘s untitled supernatural thriller for Warner Bros Pictures which will be released next year. https://www.lolakirkemusic.com/ https://www.theartcareer.com/ @lolakirke

Episode 272: Lola Kirke got on America's cultural radar as an actress - starring in the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle, along with roles in Gone Girl and Mistress America alongside Greta Gerwig. But during those years, she was also quietly nurturing her passion for songwriting and music - specifically country music. The pandemic brought her to Nashville where her album Lady for Sale was released by Third Man Records to great acclaim. Now she's about to release the new EP Country Curious and make her debut on the Grand Ole Opry. She's a bold, dynamic personality and this was a really fun conversation that bridges New York, Nashville and Hollywood.

Lola Kirke isn't particularly interested in modern day restraint and Instagram wellness trends. She stays up late, likes to drink, eats whatever she wants and just released a Jane Fonda era workout video as a companion to her new album, Lady For Sale. Lola loves Phish Food, a Ben & Jerry's collab with the jam band Phish, that just-so-happens to be celebrating its 25th anniversary! Host Rachel Belle chats with the iconic ice cream company, and Phish's long-time manager, about the history of the flavor and why it's the only product Phish has ever put its name on. Do you drink Fernet? If so, you're either a bartender or you impressed your bartender by ordering it. Rachel interviews a San Francisco bartender, whose bar sells more Fernet than anywhere else in the country, to learn more about the history of the drink they call the "bartender's handshake." Lola Kirke is an English-born American actress and singer-songwriter. You may recognize her from the films Mistress America, Gone Girl and American Woman, and the television series Mozart in the Jungle. Inspiration can come from many different genre's and sources and you can use that as a reference point in your own form of art Bio: Lola Kirke stands out like a flash of neon magenta in this nostalgic landscape of Americana tin-types. While many of her singing, and songwriting peers look further back for inspiration, Kirke's sweet spot is decidedly in the excess of the 80's. Anyone only familiar with Kirke through her on-screen performances (Mistress America, Gone Girl, or Mozart in the Jungle) may be surprised by just how dazzling Lola-playing-Lola can be. Just a few lines into “Better than Any Drug,“ it's clear no written role could reveal more of Kirke's wit, lust for life, and sense of humor than this record captures with the help of producer Austin Jenkins (White Denim, Leon Bridges). Scheduled for release in April 2022, the 10-song sophomore full-length album showcases Kirke's unselfconscious, country-twinged vocals alongside a brightly colored candy shop of glam-twang guitar riffs, department store tv commercial synth stylings, and swooping, lilting, unabashedly feminine background vocals. Lady For Sale channels a high-spirited insouciance that feels invigorating and familiar, decidedly more easy-going and fun-loving than what we've come to expect from its genre (and the world in general) in recent years. This is a party you'll want to attend. As broadcast on January 25, 2022 with plenty of tension for your podcast studio session. Tonight we remembered when Aretha recorded her first big hit 55 years prior at Muscle Shoals studios. During the session, there was seemingly a bit of tension with Aretha's husband at the time, resulting in a fight. The aftermath of the session is rather amazing, as Muscle Shoals became a destination and Aretha had her first big hit, but the two would never cross paths again. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. June is LGBTQ pride month, and for the second time, Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews heads to the arthouse to deliver part two of our June episodes that focus on LGBTQ cinema. This second episode is on the film AWOL (2016), a movie that debuted at Tribeca Film Festival before playing a limited run at arthouse theaters. This piece of cinema stars Lola Kirke (GEMINI) in her breakout role as well as a powerful performance by costar Breeda Wool (MR. MERCEDES). Joey (Lola Kirke) is a recent high school graduate living in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Poor and not sure of her future, her mother suggests the U.S. Army. While working at a country fair, she meets Rayna (Breeda Wool), a free spirit wild child who catches her eye. Soon they begin a passionate affair. With an age difference of fifteen years and Rayna married with two children, Joey wonders whether the love and passion between them will last. The film was co-written and directed by Deb Shoval from a short she made six years prior. She fought to keep Breeda Wool in the movie who would reprise her role from the short. During a casting process, she found Lola Kirke who she felt would be pivotal to play the complex Joey. First time cinematographer, Gal Deren, shot the film. Your co-hosts take a look at this quiet yet heartrending film and give their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Markus Hippi and Fernando Augusto Pacheco bring you highlights from the past week on Monocle 24 including French philosopher and author Bernard-Henri Lévy, Welsh musician Cate Le Bon and singer-songwriter and Hollywood actress Lola Kirke.
You might recognise actress Lola Kirke from *Gone Girl* and *Mistress America* but she revealed her musical talents last year with debut album *Heart Head West*. She dropped into Midori House to play tracks new and old.
What a fascinating episode we have in store for you this week. We are so lucky to be joined by writer/director, Emma Forrest. Emma has lived a life. She started out as very young journalist in London, when at the age of 15, she wrote a lauded story on Madonna for The Sunday Times, which prompted her to leave school at 16 to become a full-time writer for the Times. In 1998, she moved into writing fiction with the publication of her novel Namedropper. From there Emma began writing screenplays, selling one to Plan B, another to Miramax, and subsequently being named by Variety as one of the "Top Ten Screenwriters to Watch in 2009." Emma, however, has taken her screenwriting into her own hands and in 2018 debuted her first feature, Untogether, at the TriBeca Film Festival. Untogether stars Jemima and Lola Kirke, Ben Mendelsohn, Jamie Dornan, and Billy Crystal, and tells the story of two sisters in the middle of their own artistic and life crises — one a recovering addict, and the other in a withering relationship she doesn’t understand but can’t let go of. In addition to discussing her newest film, Emma has chosen to talk about Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now. Emma describes how she feels so connected to this film - having seen it at an inappropriately young age and also being burdened by the feelings of premonitions. She and April admire all the incredibly unique aspects of the film - the writing, editing, cinematography, and even the performances of the leads Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Emma even notes the similarities between Don't Look Now and her own film, Untogether, in how both movies take place in cities that seem to know the fates of the protagonists before the characters do. Emma also opens up about the difficulties of working on her newest release, in particular having to direct her ex-husband Ben Mendelsohn while they were going through a divorce, and how that emotion on set powered many of the performances in the film. You can see Untogether in select theaters and streaming on February 8th. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch Don't Look Now. With April Wolfe and Emma Forrest. You can let us know what you think of Switchblade Sisters on Twitter or Facebook. Or email us at switchbladesisters@maximumfun.org. Produced by Casey O'Brien and Laura Swisher for MaximumFun.org.

Welcome to the November edition of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast. It's nearly the end of the year, and we're looking back on 2018's Lagniappe Sessions. Launched in 2011, the Lagniappe Sessions is an audio series that features artists covering songs that mean something to them. Hailed as "an amazing deep cut creation factory" by Jesse Jarnow, author of Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America and Wasn’t That A Time: The Weavers, the Blacklist, and the Battle for the Soul of America, the series is one of the most popular elements of Aquarium Drunkard. This episode, we discuss sessions by the Mountain Goats, Kevin Morby, the Raccoonists (Jeff, Spencer, and Sammy Tweedy), Mountain Man, Sarah Louise, and many more. Then, Aquarium Drunkard's Jason P. Woodbury speaks with Lola Kirke. The Mozart in the Jungle and Gemini star just released a new Christmas single, "Cross You Off My List/Little Drummer Girl." And rounding things out: an interview with CAN founder ç. A pivotal figure in the world of experimental music, Schmidt recently co-authored a book with Rob Young, All Gates Open: The Story of CAN, and he's got a new album out of minimalist piano pieces, 5 Klavierstücke. Aquarium Drunkard contributor Kyle MacKinnel brings us a talk that finds Schmidt reflecting on his creative process and modern sounds by the Wu-Tang Clan.
Actress and singer-songwriter, Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle) joins Griffin and David to discuss 2000’s high-concept rom-com, What Women Want. Together they examine the careers of Helen Hunt and Mel Gibson, the other benefits of electrocution and how this film holds up 18 years later after its release. This episode is sponsored by [Talkspace](https://talkspace.com/check) (CODE: CHECK) and [Amazon Prime Video](http://tryprimechannels.com/check). And check out Lola Kirke’s new album [Heart Head West](http://www.smarturl.it/heartheadwest) and her starring role in the feature film, [Gemini](https://www.hulu.com/movie/gemini-f993a2e8-4b6a-455a-9965-ce725018801e). Courtney Barnett discusses her new album, Tell Me How You Really Feel with Relix's Editor-in-Chief Mike Greenhaus. Lola Kirke gives a track-by-track breakdown on the writing and recording of her record, Heart Head West. Ethan Miller of Howlin' Rain explores the collision of science, chance and magic that allowed for his latest LP, The Alligator Bride, to exist. Hosted by producer Jesse Lauter. The Relix Audio Hour is a part of the Osiris Podcast Network (www.osirispod.com). Music contributions from Howlin' Rain. Theme music by Marco Benevento.
We are super excited to be with the youngest of the three Kirke Sisters, Lola Kirke. We have already featured both Jemima and Domino on our What’s Underneath video series, and Domino was also with us in episode 6 of this podcast, so now we are thrilled to be able to dig deep into what’s underneath the equally radical and truthful younger sister. Lola talks candidly about growing up in a bohemian family of artists, the struggle to be heard in a room of men, how sexual rejection fueled a song on her debut album, ‘Heart Head West’, and why self-doubt has been a major source of inspiration. “I’m curious if I would be as prolific without that creeping sense of self-doubt at all times,” explains Lola. We love Lola’s gangster moves in bucking the body-negative trends of celebrity culture by not shaving her armpits for the Golden Globes, and refusing to chase the Size-Zero formula. “There's that wheat-paste that's around my neighborhood right now that says, ‘In a culture that profits from your low self-esteem, liking yourself is a radical act.’ And I do think that there is a systemic way in which we are all taught that we are not good enough, and this world goes around on the dollars that we spend trying to make ourselves feel better.”

And we’re back. Welcome to the June edition of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast, our monthly series of features, interviews, and audio esoterica. This month, we have two in-depth conversations. Up first, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and singer/songwriter Cornelia Murr. They’ve both got new records at the ready. On June 29, James releases Uniform Distortion, a collection of celebratory and clamorous rock & roll jams, via ATO Records. And on July 13th, Murr releases Lake Tear of the Clouds, a spooky set of songs produced by James, featuring guest vocals from Lola Kirke of Mozart in the Jungle and a stunning cover of Yoko Ono’s feminist anthem “I Have a Woman Inside My Soul.” Though the records sound vastly different, they also feel connected and of a piece. Together, the two had fascinating insights about the worlds of social media, David Lynch, and the act of creating — and sustaining — the proper mood on a long-player record. Then, painter and photographer Robbie Simon. Our conversation was recorded live at Gold Diggers in East Hollywood as part of our new monthly series of conversations there called Talk Show, centered around the worlds of music, art, film and beyond. You’ve likely seen Simon’s work with the former Transmissions guests the Allah-Las, and their Reverberation Radio series. His images are bold — referencing the geometric shapes of Alexander Calder — but soft too, evocative of ‘60s West Coast pop art and jazz album illustrations. “Music has been my gateway to everything. Playing music, I did every poster, every record, everything I could possibly do for the bands I was in, my friend’s bands…that was always the most creative and interested I could be for myself.” “I develope work singularly and decide if it should be a painting or a design. It’s not an exact process…I do 30 versions of every piece, in every color possible…it’s just this really tangible piece of work that can go in any direction.” If you enjoyed our show, please feel free rate and review on Apple Podcasts. Even better? You can personally tell a friend to check it out — by sharing the show via Spotify, Stitcher, MixCloud, or the TuneIn app. As always, tune into the weekly two-hour show on SIRIUS/XMU, channel 35, which can now be heard every Wednesday at 7pm PST with encore broadcasts on-demand via the SIRIUS/XM app. Follow AD on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. Despite relocating to avoid her stalker, Claire Foy believes she continues to see him everywhere she goes in director Steven Soderbergh’s UNSANE. A consultation with a mental health counselor leads to being, in her mind, mistakenly committed to a psychiatric ward where people conspire to keep her. In recommendations, Mark Pfeiffer selects writer-director Aaron Katz’s Los Angeles noir GEMINI starring Lola Kirke and Zoë Kravitz, and Paul Markoff finds plenty of laughs as Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz try to stop their teenage daughters from losing their virginity on prom night in director Kay Cannon’s comedy BLOCKERS. Please welcome actress, musician, and charmer of my heart (and everyone else's I believe) Lola Kirke. She's my guest this week. I've seen Lola play several times, her original songs and also just with a guitar around a fire singing song after song of all of the favorites. It's impressive. Her inspiration this week is freezing cold weather. It's going to be a long beautiful winter, so here's some songs to carry you along.1. The Gaylettes - That's How Strong My Love Is 2. The Band - Theme From The Last Waltz (Concert Version) 3. Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn - After The Fire Is Gone 4. Joni Mitchell - People's Parties 5. Ian Matthews - Seven Bridges Road (LP Version) 6. Jim Ford - Love On My Brain 7. Richie Havens - I Can't Make It Anymore 8. Ginny Reilly - Wildman 9. Vashti Bunyan - I Want To Be Alone 10. This week Hollister & O'Toole discuss Amazon Prime's Mozart in the Jungle, recently nominated for 2 Golden Globes: Best Comedy/Musical and Best Actor, Gael García Bernal (Y Tu Mamá También; The Motorcycle Diaries). The cast alone is music to our ears: Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, Lola Kirke, Saffron Burrows, Malcolm McDowell, Debra Monk... Also, hear what Hollister has to say about Will Smith's new movie Concussion, while O'Toole pays homage to the late, great Elaine Stritch, truly one of the Grande Dames of American Theatre (the self-proclaimed "existential problem in tights") with the doco Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me. Fun fact: Alec Baldwin appears in both movies (Concussion and Shoot Me)!
Chris & Hunter review the newest screwball dramedy from Noah Baumbach & Greta Gerwig, Mistress America. Chris recommends a rural Okie brew that reminds him of Gerwig's indie-darling adorableness. In Special Features, the Dudes discuss Great Actress & Director Collaborations, including a meandering meditation on Michael Bay, Megan Fox, and the Male Gaze. PLUS The 2015 Summer Movie Dating Game! Don't ask, just listen.

On this week’s show, the tag team of Bernard and CJ review Noah Baumbach’s latest, Mistress America, starring Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke.
A special roundtable discussion among journalists and myself with director/screenwriter Noah Baumbach, actress/screenwriter Greta Gerwig, and actress Lola Kirke of the new film Mistress America.
On today's show I talk to actor Lola Kirke. Lola comes from a family of artists and musicians - her father is Simon Kirke of the bands Bad Company and Free, her mother is Lorraine Kirke, a fashion designer and interior decorator, and her sister is Jemima, who plays Jessa on Girls. But at the age 24, Lola is no slouch herself. She's acted in films like Gone Girl and shows like The Leftovers, she plays the lead in the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle, and she's one of the stars of Noah Baumbach's latest film Mistress America. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
