In this episode of Girls On Film we give you a flavour of the third Girls On Film Awards, our annual celebration of women in film which this year took place at our new home, Regent Street Cinema in London. We launched the awards to celebrate excellence in women-focused films, and to honour women and non-binary filmmakers. Girls On Film provides an inclusive platform for the voices of diverse women and people of marginalised genders, and we have a mission: to bring about industry-wide change, and to work toward equal representation of women in the film industry: on screen, and behind the camera. As the saying goes: “if she can see it, she can be it”, and that's why shining a light on the great work women are making can make a real difference. Girls On Film host Anna Smith and co-founder Hedda Lornie Archbold hosted the awards together, and were joined by a stellar group of presenters to give out the awards, including Monica Dolan, Ronni Ancona, Sarah Gavron, Mia Bays, Col Needham, Mark Kermode, Nitin Sawhney and more. The mics didn't pick up all the sound as well as we'd hoped – but the pod conveys the great atmosphere in the room. We hope you enjoy the awards! This week's guest is Vicki Brown, the Senior Executive of Sales & Distribution at the BFI. Before the BFI she was at Together Films where she was Head of Acquisitions, Sales and Distribution, a company that is one of the leaders in social impact entertainment. She was responsible for setting up the international sales department and oversaw the acquisition of In Camera the first feature from director Naqqash Khalid. Prior to her arrival at Together Films, Vicki was the Director of International Sales at Altitude. At Altitude, she represented such diverse and critically acclaimed titles such as Rocks (by Sarah Gavron), Ali & Ava (by Clio Barnard), The Princess (by Ed Perkins), Calm With Horses (by Nick Rowland) and Diego Maradona (by Asif Kapadia). Vicki has also previously worked at Focus Features International where she handled sales on numerous titles including Cloud Atlas and Moonrise Kingdom. In addition, she seeks to champion under-represented voices in the film industry. Vicki is the co-founder (alongside former podcast guest Chi Thai) of MilkTea Films, an organisation which looks to shine a spotlight on East and Southeast Asian talent through screenings and events with a goal to building inclusion, communities and audiences. MilkTea was announced as a Film London Lodestar in 2023 and in 2022 and 2023, was nominated for a Big Screen Award. All of which to say, Vicki is incredibly hardworking and a wonderful person to have in this industry, and therefore on this podcast. We talk about how she unearthed sales as the aspect of the film industry that she could be good at, what sales agents actually do, how she copes with the intensity of festivals and markets, working at Altitude when they were just starting out, how she knows when it's time for a change, founding MilkTea and why that brings her joy, and what better East and Southeast Asian representation in cinema could look like. In this week's episode we discuss Sarah Gavron's 2019 film, Rocks. A teenage girl has to take care of and protect her younger brother, after their mother abandons them, or face the pair being placed into social care.
Ashanti Omkar (film critic and journalist) and Akin Aworan (The Swinging Palm Tree Podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Ashanti’s choice Rocks. Rocks is a British coming-of-age drama from director Sarah Gavron starring Bukky (BAFTA Rising Star 2021) Bakray as Olushola "Rocks”, a black teenager who suddenly finds herself the sole carer for her younger brother Emmanuel when her mother disappears. Despite being surrounded by her compassionate and close-knit friends, Rocks struggles to keep things together and find a safe space for her and her brother to stay while trying to evade social services. Rocks is both a story of female friendship and being a teenager in Britain today but also a heartbreaking reality of social care and the financial and mental hardships of single-parent families. Empowering and uplifting, credit must be given to casting director Lucy Pardee for bringing together an authentic and energetic group of inspiring actresses who carry the whole film. [supsystic-tables id=218] With a runtime of 93 minutes, Rocks doesn’t overstay its welcome and scores highly on recommendability but it let down by repeat viewing with it being a tough watch and scores a very respectable 4.18 overall. In 2015, the ongoing efforts to champion stories told by and about women placed large awards expectations on Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette. A fictionalized telling of the women’s suffrage movement in Britain, Suffragette stars Carey Mulligan as Maud, a laundress who begins as a passive outsider and becomes a passioned activist. But once it debuted at the Telluride Film … Continue reading "124 – Suffragette"
To coincide with the cinema release of the new drama County Lines, directed by one of today's guests Henry Blake, Neil and Dario discuss the form and legacies of that oft contested term 'social realism', asking if it has a place in today's British Cinema landscape and if recent releases such as Fyzal Boulifa's Lynn + Lucy and Mark Jenkin's Bait are evidence of a 'new wave'. As well as Henry's interview with Neil, Dario talks with Sarah Gavron, director of one of the most acclaimed of the recent British 'social' dramas, Rocks, recently released in cinemas by Altitude Films and currently screening on Netflix. Neil and Dario also wax lyrical on Steve McQueen's Lovers Rock and Neil confuses The Long Good Friday with The Long Goodbye. The film is After Life, a Japanese fantasy about the recently deceased having to choose a memory that will be re-enacted and filmed, which they then can take to the afterlife with them. Gavron explains why Hirokazu Koreeda's award-winning movie is a source of constant inspiration.

Hello podpals and welcome to Season 3 of Best Girl Grip, I’m very excited to be back with another round of guests who will help guide us through the many different roles in the film industry. It feels very special to be launching a new series with this week’s guest, because it has been a long-time coming and it was an interview that was delayed due to Covid, and that guest is Anu Henriques. Anu is a development and production assistant at Fable Pictures, whose films include Stan & Ollie and Wild Rose. Their latest production is Rocks, a vibrant and vital film about a teenage girl living in London who is trying to protect her younger brother from the authorities after her Mum disappears. Anu has a credit as an Associate Director on that film, having worked closely with director Sarah Gavron through development, production and post production. Alongside her work at Fable, she is also the founder and co-editor-in-chief of Skin Deep, a creative platform that is redefining culture and amplifying voices of colour through discussions of race, politics and activism through print, film and live events. Anu and I talk who gets to be storytellers, how she formed Skin Deep to probe that question, the organic and collaborative process out of which Rocks was born and the tools she’ll be taking to all her projects having had that experience. It was a joyous chat, and having seen Rocks and also having followed the press campaign for it quite closely, everyone involved just radiates such pride and enthusiasm for that film. It’s really infectious and the same can be said of the film itself. I would urge you to get out to a cinema and see it while you can. In the meantime, here’s episode 64 of Best Girl Grip.
Writer and director Channing Godfrey Peoples joins Anna for an eye-opening discussion about her new film, Miss Juneteenth. In UK cinemas from 25th September 2020, this movie is a warm and intimate portrait of former pageant winner Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), as she prepares her daughter, Kai (Alexis Chikaeze), for the annual Miss Juneteenth pageant and navigates her life within the close-knit Black community of Fort Worth, Texas. Channing reveals the personal inspiration behind her story, explains the role that the arts can play in the Black Lives Matter movement, and hints at what she is working on next. Next, Anna welcomes fellow critic Corrina Antrobus back to the show to review the film. They talk about Nicole’s remarkable performance, the nuanced relationships presented onscreen, and the significance of a 'dream deferred'. This jam-packed show also includes fantastic film recommendations. Channing provides a detailed watchlist: Killer Of Sheep and My Brother’s Wedding by Charles Burnett, Daughters of the Dust (dir. Julie Dash), Eve’s Bayou (dir. Kasi Lemmons), Beyond The Lights (dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood), and Rachel Getting Married (dir. Jonathan Demme). And Corrina suggests Rocks (dir. Sarah Gavron), Babyteeth (dir. Shannon Murphy), Make Up (dir. Claire Oakley), and In My Room (dir. Mati Diop). Film critic Lisa Nesselson speaks to Eve Jackson about two coming-of-age stories that are getting very different reactions. Both are written and directed by women. Sarah Gavron's "Rocks" revolves around a girl who's left to fend for herself and her brother after their mum disappears. Meanwhile, the French film "Cuties" or "Mignonnes" from Maïmouna Doucouré is being defended by France's culture minister Roselyne Bachelot after causing controversy in the United States.

The domestic abuse story in EastEnders comes to a tragic end tonight. Chantelle is killed by her husband, Gray. We speak to the Head of Continuing Drama at BBC Studios, Kate Oates, and Sarah Davidge from Woman’s Aid, about how the storyline reflects the sharp rise in domestic violence during lockdown. Are you happy being naked in front of your children? Or does it make you feel uncomfortable? We talk to the illustrator Rosie Haine who’s created a children’s book called “It Isn’t Rude to be Nude”. It's full of naked bodies of all shapes and sizes. We also hear from psychologist Dr Keon West from Goldsmiths in London whose research suggests nudity might help with body image and self-esteem. A new film called Rocks focuses on a teenage schoolgirl and her group of loyal friends. One day Rocks' mother leaves and she’s left to care for herself and her seven year old brother. The story was developed in workshops with teenage girls and the cast is largely made up of non-professional actors. The film has received rave reviews on the international festival circuit. Two of the lead characters Bukky Bakray and Kosar Ali plus the director, Sarah Gavron, talk to us about the film and what it says about empowerment, banter and female friendship. The sale of wool has recently gone up but behind the scenes it's not all rosy. Since the pandemic hit, the price farmers get for their fleeces has dropped by nearly 50%, with some saying the situation's so bad they actually lose money when selling it. We talk to knitting designer and wool producer, Susan Crawford and to Minette Batters, the President of the National Union of Farmers.

Rocks is the new feature film directed by Sarah Gavron with a screenplay by Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson. Writer Niellah Arboine reviews the film which is set in Hackney with an ensemble cast of largely non-professional actors, and it tells the story of a teenage Londoner nicknamed Rocks who takes responsibility for her little brother Emmanuel in an attempt to stop them both from being taken into care, supported by a chaotic but loving group of friends. Poet Phoebe Stuckes discusses her first collection, Platinum Blonde, which gives us a glimpse of the life of a lively young woman today. She is only 24, but Phoebe Stuckes is a seasoned poet and performer, winner of the Foyle Young Poets Award - four times - she has also been Barbican Young Poet and the Ledbury Poetry Festival’s young poet-in-residence. Troubled Blood is the title of JK Rowling’s latest novel, written under her crime writing pseudonym Robert Galbraith. And it’s generated something of a troubled reaction so far as reviewers and then social media reacted to the inclusion of a character who cross dresses. Alex Clark joins Front Row to explain. BBC National Short Story Award shortlisted author Eley Williams on her story Scrimshaw, about a women texting late at night, and how Eley was influenced by the nonsense literature of Edward Lear. The first thing you should know about this week's episode of the Empire Podcast is that we talk about Rocks on it. And Rocks rocks. The second thing you should know is that Chris Hewitt talks to Sarah Gavron and Bukky Bakray, the director and star of that movie, which is one of the best British films in yonks. And the third thing you should know is that that interview is a lot of fun. The fourth thing you should know is that this week Chris is not just joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer, as per usual, but a brand-new occupant of the ever-rotating fourth chair: Edith Bowman! Yes, the creator and host of Soundtracking, one of our favourite film pods, drops by and joins the team for this episode, and along the way they discuss the best movie cameos by musicians, discuss the week's movie news, including the Madonna biopic, the potential arrival of Kang The Conqueror in the MCU, and review Rocks (told you!), Bill & Ted Face The Music, and The Devil All The Time. Enjoy.

Film director Sarah Gavron and writer Theresa Ikoko join this week's Prospect Interview to discuss their new film, Rocks, a celebratory ode to teenage life in today's London. Rocks follows the story of a teenage girl—nicknamed Rocks—and the fast friendships she develops at her school. The film was made under quite unusual circumstances: casting was done across schools in London, involving nearly 1500 students, before finding the film's first-time actors, who then workshopped with the creative team for a year to finalise a script. Sarah and Theresa take us behind the making of Rocks, writing the lives of today's teenagers, and what it's like to release a film during a pandemic. Here To Slay. You might think Dove Cameron is the typical American child star birthed by the world of Disney. She’s not. The actress and singer might’ve even reset the perception and “mold” in terms of what people have come to expect. This podcast features a very honest and real discussion with the star that, amongst other things, sheds intimate light on what it was like starting in the entertainment industry at a very young age, and working with that powerhouse brand---and all that it comes with----for better or worse. Dove is a true creative. She was raised that way, and a lot of her open mindedness is due to the creative freedom she’s exercised since she was a very young girl. She’s experienced some personal tragedies and deep wounding, has been vocal about that, and her mental health, and we talk about where she is today and what she’s learning. Recently, Dove spent time protesting on behalf of racial equality. We discuss her experience, and how seeing people standing up for what’s right was “calming” to her. Being a multi-talent, an actor and also a singer, we talk about the differences in working within each craft. You’ll hear what it was like working on a recent UK stage production, which actors she admires, and we get really specific about her goals and the importance of expressing herself honestly. And also, working so much that it allows her to discover new levels of herself. We get into body image, the big subject of social media and her over 30 million followers on Instagram. Here, you'll get to know Dove and her unique perspective on life and its many facets. We talk boyfriends, best friends, and a ton of her favorite things including her perfect summer day, favorite vacation, how she views her style and others that you can shop here: 1. Recorded during Women's History Month 2020, in this episode Hugh and Jenna explore the 2015 film, Suffragette, directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Meryl Streep. Hugh and Jenna discuss the suffragette movement of the early twentieth century, as well as the general suffrage movement in the United Kingdom up to that point, look at the importance of class within the movement, why some stories from history deserve a bit more time then a movie is able to give it, and why the film feels a lot like the suffragette's ‘greatest hits.' Plus the hosts get to have some fun insulting the Daily Mail Warning: some technical issues lead to Jenna sounding very quiet when compared to her co-host. Please accept our apologies for this.

Edu has shot movies and commercials around the world with very unique directors, developing a beautiful eye, an honest smile and a very personal style. Born in Barcelona in 1981, Edu Grau studied filmmaking in ESCAC (Spain) and the NFTS (UK) specializing early as a Director of Photography. At 23, when he was not ready for that, and after the Sundance winning short "LA RUTA NATURAL", Edu shot his first feature, Albert Serra's "HONOR DE CAVALLERIA", which premiered at Cannes'06 and 40 other festivals. Then he paired up with Tom Ford for his debut feature in Hollywood, "A SINGLE MAN", that was acclaimed as one of the most cinematically beautiful films of 2009 and got Colin Firth a Bafta and an Oscar Nom. Vice magazine included it in the ¨30 most beautiful movies of all time¨. In 2009, Edu filmed "BURIED" with Rodrigo Cortés, and starring Ryan Reynolds. The film won Edu the Bronze Frog for Best Cinematography at Camerimage'10 and a Goya nomination. "FINISTERRAE" won the main award in Rotterdam'11, while his return to the Uk was with Nick Murphy's "THE AWAKENING", with Rebecca Hall and Dominic West. Shortly after came a special movie by his talented old friend Marçal Forés,"ANIMALS", pretty much in the vein of the shorts that they used to do together. Edu was then given the opportunity to work with Lady Gaga at the peak of her career, "BORN THIS WAY" was the result. In 2012, Edu premiered in Toronto Dante Ariola's "ARTHUR NEWMAN" with Emily Blunt and Colin Firth. "A SINGLE SHOT" with Sam Rockwell and Bill H Macy was just before "SUITE FRANÇAISE" by Saul Dibb, with Michelle WiIliams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Mathias Schoenaerts and Sam Riley. "SUFFRAGETTE", directed by Sarah Gavron and with Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep was Edu's next step modernizing a period film. "THE GIFT" by Joel Edgerton and starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall was one of the surprise film of 2015. "TRESPASS AGAINST US" by Adam Smith featuring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson was a gypsie chase movie. His new 25M budget movie, "GRINGO" by Nash Edgerton with Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo and Joel Edgerton is a dark action comedy. In 2017, he shot "QUIÉN TE CANTARÁ" directed by the cult auteur Carlos Vermut. He was nominated for a Goya, a Gaudí and a CEC for Best Cinematography. Later on, Edu reteamed with the one and only Joel Edgerton to do "BOY ERASED" with Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Xavier Dolan and Flea. The movie got two Golden Globes nominations. Edu recently shot Gavin O'Connor's latest movie at Warner Bros "THE WAY BACK" starring Ben Affleck. The movie will be released March 6th 2020. After an amazing run with some top commercial directors, Edu has just wrapped Rebecca Hall's debut feature "PASSING", with Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negra, Andre Holland, Alex Skarsgard and Bill Camp. It is Edu's first film in glorious B&W and 4:3. The movie will be released in the festival and awards season of 2020. Meet Edu Grau.
Ep 26: Live from International Film Festival Rotterdam: Bombshell, Parasite, Oscars 2020 + Rocks director Sarah Gavron and guests Director Sarah Gavron (Suffragette) joins Anna Smith on stage in Rotterdam for an inspiring conversation about female film collaborations and her gritty new teen movie, Rocks. Her associate director, Anu Henriques, reveals a new initiative supporting industry newcomers, and top Dutch film critics Dana Linssen and Lauren Murphy review three new releases with Anna. First up is Bombshell, starring Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman. How does it represent the Time's Up cause, and would it have been different directed by a woman? Next up is The Long Walk, an atmospheric genre film from Mattie Do, the first female filmmaker to come from Laos. Finally, the critics dodge spoilers while dissecting the cult hit Parasite from director Bong Joon Ho. All this plus a stimulating discussion about the lack of female directors in contention at Oscars 2020... No wonder the audience had plenty of questions and comments: add yours via https://twitter.com/GirlsOnFilm_Pod. Thanks to our wonderful hosts IFFR, to our house band, MX Tyrants, and to our intern, Heather Dempsey. Girls On Film is an HLA production, Exec produced by Hedda Archbold and audio produced by Jane Long.

This week I speak to cinematographer Rachel Clark. Rachel’s CV is incredibly impressive. She started out in the industry over ten years ago, working as a runner on the likes of This Is England (2006), and progressed into the camera department where she worked as a trainee on Control (2007). In the years after that Rachel worked as clapper loader on lots of British indie films such as Bronson, Fish Tank and Wuthering Heights as well huge blockbusters such World War Z and Captain America: Civil War. As a first assistant camera assistant she travelled across the US with Cinematographer Robbie Ryan and director Andrea Arnold for the road movie American Honey (2016) and has worked around the world on many 2nd Unit action sequences: Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them (2016), & Black Panther (2018) among them. Rachel was the 2nd Unit Director of Photography on director Sarah Gavron’s latest film Rocks and has just completed photography on the feature film Concrete Plans. I felt very honoured to lure Rachel away from the camera to the microphone and basically ask lots of basic questions about what cinematography actually is. We cover lots of interesting topics such as the physicality and energy the role requires, what Rachel does in her downtime between jobs and how she stays motivated, and what she learnt from working with Robbie Ryan. I hope you enjoy the interview.
I’m really excited for the episode this week as its completely new territory for me! I interviewed costume designer Ruka Johnson, who has a really varied CV across features, shorts, television and music videos. Her credits include Obey, a film that dramatises the 2011 London Riots, award-winning short film We Love Moses (produced by OG - original guest - Georgia Goggin) and music videos for Blood Orange and Lily Allen! She also worked on Sarah Gavron’s film Rocks, which shrewd listeners will know has popped up on the pod quite a bit! Hands down my favourite part of this chat is when Ruka says she wants to be really successful and completely owns it. I think its always really refreshing, perhaps sadly so, to hear a young woman claim that as their ambition. Even if you’re thinking it, we’re often told you have to keep your intentions on the down-low, and to be gracious and surprised and grateful when that success does find you. But its always super important to say what you want, to go after it and not feel shame about doing that, or shame about having success and wealth and creative fulfilment as a priority, so yeah that was cool to hear Ruka say and the rest of the chat is just as inspiring tbh. So enjoy!
My guest this week is Emma Duffy. Emma has produced commercials, music videos and shorts, including Oysters which was commissioned as part of London Calling Plus in 2016 and last year the first feature that she's produced - Mari (directed by Georgia Parris) - premiered at the London Film Festival. She also has exec producer credits on Sarah Gavron’s next film Rocks and Craig Robert’s sophomore feature Eternal Beauty through her work at the Wellcome Trust. We talk about the lots of different things, from lamenting the fall of IdeasTap to the changing face of distribution, the mantras she uses to keep things in perspective and knowing your own worth. I hope you enjoy episode 7 of the Best Girl Grip podcast!

Matthew Sweet introduces scores for films that question the way we think about the cinema, and about other things as well.... The programme features music from Birth of a Nation; The Assassination of the Duke of Guise; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; The Seven Samurai; The Magnificent Seven; The Robe; Midnight Cowboy; Taxi Driver; The Young Sherlock Holmes; Avatar;and the Classic Score of the Week - Jaws. Matthew also considers whether film can change our ideas about society in the week that has seen the launch of Sarah Gavron's new biopic, "Suffragette", with music by Alexandre Desplat.
On the Empire Podcast this week we welcome Abi Morgan and Sarah Gavron, the writer/director pairing behind Suffragette. Meanwhile, the inestimable Robert Zemeckis also came by to talk about his latest blend of polished storytelling and technical virtuosity, The Walk.
'A' reads her blog post on the film, Suffragette, starring Carrie Mulligan and Meryl Streep, directed by Sarah Gavron. A's experience of the film screening at Telluride Film Festival provoked emotional turmoil, and brought up many of her own frustrations with the current state inequality in America. While Suffragette follows the story of women fighting for the right to vote in the early part of the century, 'A' felt the impact from centuries of oppression for the female gender to present day - how insecurity and fear have been deeply embedded in our psyche as women, and how we might go about eradicating these hindrances slowing us down, and how we as a society, including men, can find a balance in allowing our feminine energies to exist without shame. .
