History, “The past” as Faulkner wrote, “is never dead. It's not even past." Trauma, a Greek word for wound, takes on myriad shapes and forms. It often remains and reverberates through generations. There is individual trauma and collective trauma. However, just because you suffered does not give you permission to inflict suffering on others. Angela Davis said, “Victimization cannot be permitted to function as a halo of innocence.” Empathy is the ability to take on another person's perspective, to understand, feel, and possibly share and respond to their experience. Victims need our empathy, our compassion but not according to the world's richest man. Elon Musk has said, “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.”

In this episode of Bible Bashed, hosts Harrison and Pastor Tim discuss the differences between pastoral counseling and therapy, emphasizing the biblical perspective on mental health. They argue that pastors are better equipped to handle issues like anxiety and depression, which they view as normal life problems rather than medical disorders. The conversation explores the materialistic worldview surrounding mental health, the importance of personal responsibility, and the role of scripture in providing hope and guidance. The hosts also address the backlash they received for their views and the implications of a low view of pastoral responsibilities. Takeaways Salvation is found in Christ alone. Humanity is in sin and under God's wrath. Pastors are better equipped than therapists for counseling. Anxiety and depression are often treated as medical issues. Materialism has influenced the understanding of mental health. Personal responsibility is crucial in addressing mental health issues. The Bible provides guidance for life's problems. Victimization narratives can undermine accountability. Pastors should fulfill their role in shepherding their congregations. Hope and change are possible through faith in God. Let's be willing to release our attraction to victimhood. Seeing ourselves as a victim in this world is a habit we can break. In this episode, Jennifer shares her walk with seeing herself as a victim of the world and recognizing that it's a habit that can be released. Seeing ourselves as a victim can feel really sticky. When we're disempowered we feel resistance to the very things that will most support our liberation. All of this can be transformed more easily than we can imagine! Henry Woodman, a really interesting entrepreneur and father was wonderful explaining the complexities of his mother's behavior. He and his two siblings had to juggle so many crazy situations that would never have happen in a "normal" family. Henry shares stories of his mother that are truly shocking and unfortunate for any children to have to had to experience. And again, when you take into account what Margo experienced as a child, perhaps one can be more forgiving. All of that said, Henry loved his mother, yet was her affection genuine? "It's hard to say because regardless of the things she set her children up to do. He says that his mother was very loving and affectionate in spite of asking her children to steal things from stores and then act shocked and surprised when confronted by the store manager, etc. if they got caught."As a kid you don't really realize what was going on-that was kind of messed up", reflects Woodman. " When mom was growing up, the sense of having missed out or being robbed and the victimization thing came through her whole life. She would do whatever she needed to do in order to have the appearance of somebody successful or wealthy. It manifested itself in us looking at the world saying there's more to it than the superficial part of it. We had horseback riding , tennis, speak multiple languages, it was challenging but also thankful for it all (languages, etc) plus other things that she felt the kids have to have this facade."Lessons learned by Henry were many including first and foremost, he could have continued on the path of "I need more," I deserve more," etc. But he chose a different path, one not superficially charged, one of morals and doing what's right. What he did learn from his mother is tolerance and resilience. And Henry is so thankful for these gifts.SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/henry.woodman INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/a_n_e_m_o_i_a_/ LINKEDIN:https://www.linkedin.com/in/hwoodman/ WEBSITE:https://mariethestory.com/ "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. When the Kotzebue police entered a bedroom in a house on the mayor's property on May 23, 2018, they found the lifeless body of twenty-five-year-old Jennifer Kirk curled at the foot of the bed. A rifle lay across her feet. She had strangulation marks on her neck and a bullet wound under her chin. Even before receiving the autopsy report, the Kotzebue police quickly ruled Kirk's death a suicide. Two years later, the police were called to an adjacent house on the same property to examine the body of Susanna Norton. They could not so easily dismiss Susanna's death because the medical examiner ruled it a homicide. Someone had strangled Susanna to death. The deaths of Jennifer Kirk and Susanna Norton, both Inupiaq women, highlight the continuing issue of violence against Alaska Native women. I'll start these notes off by providing you some important information about my guest this week, Sergeant Major Aaron Stone, US Army, Retired. This information is taken directly from Aaron's website, 18 Winters – Shattering the silence I am a retired Combat Medic in the United States Army, and I have completed multiple tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia; none of those experiences affected me as much as the trauma I suffered at age 15 at the hands of a male teacher who methodically groomed and raped me. I choose the word “rape” deliberately, because it conveys the reality of that man's actions so many years ago. For over 17 years, 18 winters, I became a silent sufferer of depression and PTSD. The cost of keeping that shameful secret caught up with me in 2010 through a nervous breakdown. Thankfully, I finally realized I needed help and, for the first time in my life, I told my story. It was an act of liberation. Over the last eight years I have spoken over 100 times to numerous military organizations across the U.S., Germany, and South Korea spreading my message of pain, redemption, and hope. My goal is to be an inspiration for those who may be suffering through the same mental anguish as I once did. I reassure survivors that sexual assault is never their fault, they are never alone, and help is here. With social stigmas and victim blaming, most male victims who never report a sexual assault. Public awareness and education of male-on-male sexual violence and the horrifying impact it can have on one's life must increase. For me, the most amazing aspect of interviewing Aaron was how his personality and conversation style is both calm and collected, yet commanding and powerful while telling his story. It's no wonder Aaron is so incredibly sought after as a speaker. Our conversation is insightful and comprehensive. It was a true honor to speak with Aaron and learn about both his rape story and his healing journey, and how he looks at telling his experience as his therapy. I share in Aaron's belief that telling our own rape or sexual assault experience is one of the first steps in our healing journey. If your organization or agency is looking for an inspirational presenter as a way of educating your employees or colleagues on the solution to the stigmas of rape and sexual assault, Aaron is the person you need to bring aboard. I feel no doubt that you will be impressed with the results! When we're growing up, it's hard to conceive that the future will feel any different than the present, but the slogan “it gets better”, made popular by sexpert Dan Savage specifically addressing LGBTQ+ youth, tries to bridge that gap with reassurance. But does it actually get better? This week, sex researcher Anna delivers a longitudinal analysis following 230 LGTBQ+ adolescents over three and a half years. The paper talks about the distress caused by harassment and the impact and correlation of social support on mental health outcomes. Turn on your mind with a listen to this dose of Carnal Knowledge, and be a beacon for kids still coming through it.Link to Study:Does It Get Better? “Why do the innocent suffer? And can we consider as well how many who are clearly victims are also unconsciously coconspirators in their abuse? Just as Bob Marley sang, “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds,” we all must consider the ways in which we have failed to take responsibility to allowing or even empowering those who have caused us pain. We should have tons of compassion for all of those who suffer unjustly, but it is also important for us to become aware of the chains that have kept us in a toxic situation.
The victim mentality, characterized by a lack of personal accountability and a tendency to blame others for one's own shortcomings, is often accompanied by a complex system of interpretation and defense mechanisms known as hermeneutics and apologetics. This mindset allows individuals to sustain and justify their victimhood by interpreting events in a way that reinforces their status as victims, while simultaneously defending themselves against any challenges to this narrative.

Beginning in 1880s Africans Americans became the targets of a lynching craze that claimed thousands of lives. In Beyond the Rope: The Impact of Lyching on Black Culture and Memory, University of Oklahoma historian Karlos K. Hill argues that narratives are key to understanding not just what drove the lynching craze but how African Americans responded. It was the narrative of the black beast rapist that fueled and justified the lyching mania. African American activists and cultural actors responded with their own victimization and consoling narrative to galvanize public support and to offer examples of courage and heroism to inspire future generations. Victimization and consoling narratives were both examples of how African Americans found usable pasts to fight against racial violence and injustice.
