Maus originally began as a strip in 1972 and was serialized from 1980 to 1991. Some have criticized the book for a number of reasons, including topic, style, and themes, but in 2022, a school board in McMinn County Schools in East Tennessee removed the book from school curriculum over concerns about profanity, nudity and violence. 22-year-old Vladek Hasel was a well-known figure in his community. Local shopkeepers, employees, police officers, and countless other residents knew him well. Vladek was approachable and outgoing, always ready to strike up a conversation with anyone and genuinely interested in learning about their lives. He was the kind of person who, after hearing a server's story of struggling, would leave a $500 tip—while heading back to his own apartment to sleep on a deflated air mattress. However, in the Fall of 2021, something changed. Vladek began voicing fears for his safety. He went so far as to buy a knife and ask a friend if he could borrow a gun and then he disappeared. Bryan Vladek Hasel was 22 years old when he went missing from the Orlando, Florida, area in November 2021. The exact date of his disappearance is unknown. He is white, 5'8” with blond to light brown hair and blue eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he weighed approximately 210 lbs. He was born in Russia but does not have an accent. November 6, 2021. Orlando, Florida. 22-year old Bryan “Vladek” Hasel shows up at a coffee shop he often frequents, but after police are called and Vladek is issued a trespass warning for a prior incident with a pocket knife, he walks off and vanishes without a trace. Nine days later, Vladek's father returns from a family trip and discovers that his son is missing and has left most of his personal belongings behind in their apartment. There is speculation that Vladek may have suffered some sort of a mental health crisis and disappeared voluntarily, but no trace of him can be found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we are covering the unsolved disappearance of Bryan “Vladek” Hasel at the direct request of his family, who are doing whatever they can to spread awareness about his story and are hoping he is still alive somewhere and can be found safely. In 2021, Vladek was living in Orlando, Florida with his father, trying to find his way after leaving the Marine Corps in 2019. But he was struggling. When his father took a road trip with one of Vlad's sisters for 10 days in November, Vlad decided to stay behind in Orlando. When his dad returned home, Vlad was nowhere to be found. There were some bizarre circumstances that happened around this time- an odd incident with Vladek at the coffee shop down from his apartment, some strange religious talk from Vlad, and his red Nike Slide shoe that appeared in the woods behind the apartment. Did Vlad run off to live with a religious group? Did he intend to harm himself? Or, did his unusual behavior in the days leading up to his disappearance put him in harm's way? An update on missing Vladek Hasel
In this episode we finish up the last three chapters of Maus I by Art Spiegelman, after a quick conversation about what the Nazi party was before and during WWII. We talk about what happens in the book (in other words, what happened in Vladek's life), how the book has made us feel and how it reminds us of events that are happening around the world to this day. UPDATE: The only update that has happened since this interview is that the manager of Foxtail clarified that the person who made the initial complaint regarding Vladek on Fri 11/5/21 came back to Foxtail later that night after Vladek had left and alerted employees that he witnessed Vladek with a knife….since FoxTail has a zero weapon policy they had decided to go ahead and trespass Vladek the next time he came into the business. If you were at Foxtail Coffee Co (12001 Collegiate Way, Orlando FL 32817) on Nov 5th/6th 2021 or witnessed Vladek at some other point please email Night Owl Reconnaissance - Info@nightowlrecon.org When Vladek Hasel went missing in November 2021, no one was the wiser. His family was out of town and he didn't have a job he had to report to. When his dad returned 10 days later Vlad was nowhere to be found. Did he finally follow through with his talk of living off the grid? Did he fall deeper into a depression, ultimately harming himself? Did he become the victim of foul play because of his kindness toward others? There are many possibilities to consider but one crucial question begs the utmost importance – where is Vladek Hasel today? On November 5, 2021, Vladek's father, Steve, left town with family members, including Valdek's mom, for a ten day trip out of state. His parents have been divorced since 2017 but still get along terrifically hence the carpooling for the family trip. This was a trip that Vladek had taken before, it was an outdoorsy kind of thing to celebrate his sister Bethany's birthday. Vlad had gone the year prior in 2020. He was invited this go round too, but chose to stay home alone instead. This was a last minute decision but not unusual for him to change his mind on something. On the evening of November 5th, after his dad had left, Vladek went to hang out at the Foxtail Coffee shop, one of his favorite spots. It's around a half hour walk, by normal roads. It has been recently uncovered that Vladek had taken a new pocketknife with him, that he had purchased previously that week. He had made comments that he bought it for “protection”, but it was a general comment and not substantiated by and particular event. He allegedly had the pocketknife visible on the table he was sitting at. Supposedly he wasn't being threatening or violent with the knife, but had made someone or someone's feel uncomfortable during his visit. He eventually left and presumably went back home. Between 7-8am on November 6th Vladek made his way back to Foxtail. It's not certain how the sequence of events unfolded exactly but this is when Vladek was trespassed by police for the incident happening the night before. Once he left the coffee shop it's said he was seen walking toward Wawa, a convenience store, that's 2 businesses west of Foxtail. That is the last time anyone sees Vladek that we also have an additional piece of information to back it up with. Vladek Hasel is a Caucasian male born on December 20, 1998 with brown hair and blue eyes. Vladek is 5'8” tall and weighs 220 pounds. Vladek was last known to be wearing a black hoodie/jacket and khaki shorts with black crew socks and red slide sandals prior to his disappearance. Do you feel a story when you read it? What makes it feel real? In this episode on the groundbreaking graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman, I explore how Spiegelman makes his father's story come to life as more than just a series of events in history. Vladek Spiegelman, a Holocaust survivor, doesn't recount events; he recounts experiences, and those experiences are what his son Art relays in Maus. The way that Spiegelman centers his father's human experience makes Maus uniquely inviting to its readers despite the horrors it recounts. Its sensitive and sharply detailed account of Vladek's experience as a survivor asks readers to feel what they're reading as well as understand it. It forces us to confront things we often do not and to do so compassionately. It leads us to feel empathy within its first pages and keeps us there until the last frame. The meditation in this episode is aimed at centering that same essential humanity that Spiegelman distills in Maus. Based on the Buddhist practice of loving-kindness meditation, this episode will invite you to approach your own story and that of those around you, close and distant, with a consciousness of the human-ness at the center of each one. After declining to join his family on vacation, a 22 year old man stopped responding to texts and calls a day after they'd left. A week later, his family returned home to find a quiet apartment, his belongings where he'd usually leave them, but no other sign of him being there since they'd left. Food had gone uneaten in the fridge, people he'd see on a regular basis around town had not seen him in days, and with his cell phone still in the apartment there was no way to reach him. This week, we take a trip to East Orlando, Florida, where on the afternoon of November 12, 2021, Bryan Vladek Hasel seemingly disappeared without a trace. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/whereareyoupodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/whereareyoupodcast/support

The second volume of Art Spiegelman's award-winning graphic memoir finds the artist grappling with the success of the first, and questioning his ability to pull off such an ambitious project. In doing so, he adds another layer to the book's metaphorical conceit of depicting various ethnicities as different animals, and creates a work more reflective and self-aware than its predecessor. Meanwhile, as Spiegelman's often contentious relationship with his father takes him from the Catskills to Florida and back to New York, Vladek's recollections take him from the horrors of Auschwitz through the end of the war. But although he's finally free of the concentration camp, his trials are far from over. Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus had a profound effect on the public perception of comics as an art form when its first volume, serializing installments that had first appeared in the alternative comics anthology Raw, appeared in 1986. In it, Spiegelman's conversations with his father, Vladek—background for a comic the artist wants to write—serve as an entryway into the elder Spiegelman's harrowing, matter-of-fact account of his experiences in Poland in the 1930s and 40s, including his eventual arrival at the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. In one of the book's most disarming touches, all of its Jewish characters are portrayed as bipedal, clothes-wearing mice, while Germans are depicted as cats, and the non-Jewish people of Poland as pigs. In this first volume, Vladek paints an increasingly grim portrait of a changing Poland and recounts the various indignities, humiliations and atrocities he and other Jews experienced during the first stages of the Holocaust. Is President Trump trying to delegitimize the Federal Judiciary? Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Professor Steve Vladek, of the University of Texas, to discuss the Thanksgiving Week war of words between Chief Justice Roberts and President Donald Trump. On today’s episode, Aaron and Steve talk about the comments made by both Chief Justice Roberts and Donald Trump regarding the case that was recently decided in a federal court in California that struck down the President’s Executive Order limiting those seeking asylum at the Mexican border. The federal trial court -- not the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, as the President inaccurately claimed – ruled that the President’s action was inconsistent with the clear language of the immigration law, 8 U.S.C. 1158. (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1158) In a series of tweets, the President railed against the Ninth Circuit, claiming the decision was the product of an “Obama judge.” In an extraordinary and public rebuke, Chief Justice Roberts denounced Trump’s notion of “Obama Judges,” saying that an “independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.” Steve and Aaron discuss the back-and-forth as well as the executive order and ruling itself and the implications for the reputation of and public confidence in the federal judiciary and the Supreme Court. After listening to today’s episode and hearing their thoughts, as well as reading the code, what do you think? Would other courts agree with the ninth circuit’s interpretation? We see a man, alone, hobbled by iron. He's kneeling in the path of a tank, unable to stand. You can see his hands trembling, or maybe he's beyond fear and watching his death with uncomprehending eyes. It will crush him. You know it will crush him. You excuse the sight. If he fights he obviously is a threat and should be destroyed. If he doesn't fight, he's a coward who deserves to be crushed. In your mind no matter what he does he deserves it. You don't even know the context, but you're sure he deserves it. He deserves it, because he must deserve it. Join us tonight on avfm radio as we discuss why men deserve to be ground to pieces by the system. And why you're right to turn your head away, plug your ears and just let it happen.

James Naughtie and readers talk to the American writer and artist Art Spiegelman about his graphic novel Maus. First published in short frames in his experimental comic RAW in the 1970s, Maus the book has become a publishing phenomenon, selling over two million copies world wide. It tells the story of his parents, Vladek and Anja Spiegelman, from their first meeting in pre-war Poland to their survival of the death camps at Auschwitz and Dachau and their move to New York after the war. Part of the success of the book is Art's portrayal of the characters as animals. The Jews are mice, the Germans cats, the Poles pigs and the Americans dogs. The mouse metaphor, he says, came naturally to him as a comic book writer. He wanted to keep the scale of the book small, and with Maus, all he wanted to do was tell a story, he never wanted to change the world, he's too pessimistic for that. The story follows the birth of his elder brother Richieu, who was poisoned by an aunt rather than face capture; how his parents were hidden by generous Poles, and then betrayed to the SS as they paid to be smuggled over the border to safer Hungary. As well as the force of this story, Art Spiegelman talks about the powerful subplot which shows the difficult relationship between father and son, and what it could be like for the child of Holocaust survivors. In Maus, Art refuses to sentimentalise or sanctify his father the survivor; and in the same way his self-portrait is unflinching in its honesty. Y si os gustan los zombies, The Walking Dead ha vuelto con su segunda temporada y os damos nuestra opinión, para unos impresionante para otros decepcionante.

VOTE![poll id="172"] VOTE Maus II Spiegelman’s Maus, A Survivor’s Tale (Pantheon, 1987) was a breakthrough, a comic book that gained widespread mainstream attention. The primary story of that book and of this sequel is the experience of Spiegelman’s father, Vladek, a Polish Jew who survived the concentration camps of Nazi Germany during World War II. This story is framed by Spiegelman’s getting the story from Vladek, which is in turn framed by Spiegelman’s working on the book after his father’s death and suffering the attendant anxiety and guilt, the ambivalence over the success of the first volume, and the difficulties of his “funny-animal” metaphor. (In both books, he draws the char acters as anthropomorphic animals– Jews are mice, Poles pigs, Germans cats, Americans dogs, and French frogs.) The interconnections and complex characterizations are engrossing, as are the vivid personal accounts of living in the camps. Maus and Maus . . . II are two of the most important works of comic art ever published. Contact us at podcast@majorspoilers.com Call the Major Spoilers Hotline at (785) 727-1939. Take Sharktopus and Gatoroid for example; a giant alligator and a shark-octopus hybrids. Champions both, showcasing the pinnacle of movie storytelling. But it does bring up an interesting question; If Gatoroid and Sharktopus were put in a tank to fight it out to the death, who would win? VOTE![poll id="171"] VOTE Maus Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, by Art Spiegelman, is a biography of the author’s father, Vladek Spiegelman, a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor. It alternates between descriptions of Vladek’s life in Poland before and during the Second World War and Vladek’s later life in the Rego Park neighborhood of New York City. The work is a graphic narrative in which Jews are depicted as mice, while Germans are depicted as cats. It is the only comic book ever to have won a Pulitzer Prize.
