January 7, 1990. Daviess County, Kentucky. The nude body of a white male who appears to be in his thirties is found in a remote wooded area. The victim has been shot and severely beaten and his hands and feet were removed, but since he cannot be identified, he becomes known as the “Daviess County John Doe”. Seventeen years later, investigators announce that the victim has been identified as Scott Morris, a 14-year old boy who went missing from Indianapolis, Indiana in 1978, but this turns out to be mistake, as DNA testing later shows that the decedent has no genetic connection to Scott's family. Finally, in April 2024, the Daviess County John Doe is correctly identified as William Mathews, a former Louisville resident who was 37 years old at the time of his death, but his murder remains unsolved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two separate unsolved cold cases which wound up being linked together in a very unlikely fashion. It was the turn of a new decade. 1990 offered promise to some and would offer a decades long unsolved murder to one in particular. Daviess county Kentucky sets along the Kentucky Indiana border and has some 96,000 people that call it home. It's had the reputation as the leading producer of alcoholic drinks, specifically Kentucky Bourbon for years. The Southwestern part of the county had been a leader in the production of coal through the 1960's and is home to its county seat of Owensboro. It's known for many things, most of which its residents are proud of, some though, shun the darker times. Time, it's funny we should put it like that, time is an odd thing, it can drag on far longer than any of us would like. Our story begins on January 7, 1990, in Owensboro, Kentucky; the place where NASCAR legends Michael Darrel Waltrip were born, along with acting legend Johnny Depp. Two rabbit hunters were out in a wooded area when they came across the naked body of a white male. They instantly contacted police, who arrived on the scene not long after and proclaimed that it was “the worst they'd ever seen”. That isn't exaggeration either, most cops who saw the remains stated as much. To this day, over three decades later, this John Doe has still not been identified. Who was he? Why was he murdered, and by whom. These are The Mountain Mysteries, and this is episode 67, 36 hours to oblivion, The Daviess County John Doe. What happens when you make a deal with the devil? John Rempe knows, as his bourbon series Blood Oath has consistently sold out upon each new release, including the most recent, pact 6. As a master distiller, he makes that pact directly with his consumers: to pour his soul into each blend, creating something brand new while honoring old world bourbon. We also chatted with John about the relaunch and rebranding of the historic brand Daviess County that dates back to 1874, as well as explore the relaunch of the Ezra Brooks line with Old Ezra and its new 7 year age statement, all now under the Lux Row Distilling family.
